The wolf man Most people would be terrified to find themselves facing a wild wolf pack, alone and unarmed. Not Shaun Ellis. 1) _____ He wrote about his unusual experience in a book called The Man who Lived with Wolves. Shaun had always been fascinated by wolves, although he admits that, li ke the majority of children, he grew up with an in-built fear of the animal. This fear, he believes, is a result of the bad i mage wolves are given in story books and in films. 2) ____ As he later learnt, wolves are very interesting animals with extremely complicated family and pack r elationships. Shaun decided that he wanted to spend his life studying nature and animals. Following this dream led him to a North American Indian reservation in Idaho. There he worked at a wolf research centre. 3) ____ He wanted to get up close to t he wolves in their natural habitat. So, he started to live in the wild with them. Amazingly, the wolves accepted him into the pack where, because he couldn’t hunt, his role was to look after the young ones. 4) ____ There were some dangerous moments when Shaun made mistakes. 5) ____ Fortunately, he survived to tell his story. Although he was reluctant to leave the wolf family, Shaun had to return to society for health reasons. A wolf’s lifestyle does not l ead to a particularly long life! Now, he uses what he learnt from the unusual experience to run a wolf protection centre. He also uses his expertise to help farmers in other countries who see wolves as a threat to their animals. Will he return to the wild? Who knows? Shaun Ellis is full of surprises!
