AIR COOLED EXCHANGERS Thermal Design ~ refer to Sec 10 GPSA Engineering Data Book Two types:
Induced Air Flow
Forced Air Flow
Most common in the process industry is the forced air flow type. Temperature control is by: 1. top louvers 2. variable pitch fans. 3. variable speed drives.
Freeze Protection Warm air recirculation
¾ ¾ ¾
Use warm air recirculation when process fluids contain moisture and freezing is possible from low air temperature. Control inside plenum air temperature using an averaging bulb. Side louvers are most often manually controlled.
Finned bundles are vulnerable to: 1.
damage from hail – use hail screens
2.
fouling from bugs & poplar fluff
¾
never spray water on tubes bundles because mineral deposits from the evaporating water fouls the fins.
¾
variable pitch fans and variable speed fans are very useful in controlling process temperature where the ambient air is very cold.
¾
never remove bug screens for additional cooling capacity.
¾
be conservative in the design maximum air temperature.
¾
narrow approach temperatures of 100 C are common.
¾
multiple cooling services are allowable within one structure.
¾
proximity to other air cooler can have an impact on air temperature.
¾
a method for calculating extended surface area, air flow, and motor power is provided in Sec 10., GPSA Engineering Data Book.
