FILLMORE HISTORY
City Hall
City Hall
P I IR U R U
The Southern Pacific Railroad came through the Heritage Valley in 1886. Joseph D. McNab who laid out the town of Fillmore in 1887, played a big role in Fillmore’s Fillmore’s development development by establishing the railroad station in Fillmore. Fillmore. The city was named after Jerome A. Fillmore who was the Southern Pacific superintendent. The railroad arrived, real estate sales were thriving and there was a strong desire to flourish in the late 1800’s and and those in Fillmore wanted wanted prosperity. In 1888 was when the first orange grove was laid out on five acres; it was simply an experiment but the test was so successful that even to this day it has brought great agricultural recognition to our our city. The Ventura County Courthouse recoded a map of Fillmore on August 1, 1888. In 1914, Fillmore was incorporated as the City of Fillmore in Ventura County. Since Fillmore was incorporated, City Hall has been in six different locations. The Neo Classical building, which was built in 1997 is the sixth location and is positioned at the corner of Central Avenue and Santa Clara Street. Today Fillmore’s population is almost 16,000 and agriculture is still the main source source of income. Come and visit the Heritage Valley, which is made up of 3 major cities: Piru, Fillmore and Santa Paula. As you drive down this valley you will see historical, cultural and agricultural beauty all along the banks of the Santa Clara River. The Heritage Valley is between between Valencia and Ventura and and is home to Highway 126. If you head west on the 126 Highway from Santa Clarita you will discover the beautiful Rancho Camulos. As you drive down the 126 highway highway you will notice the green green mountains that burst with green during the spring time and rows rows and rows of fresh fresh avocado, orange and lemon trees; not only that but you will also see other crops such as peppers, tomatoes and much more. There are many fruit stands along the way and the people serving there are always welcoming. Places to stopover when near Fillmore are the Bennett’s Honey Farm and the Giessinger Giessinger Winery & Tasting Room. So if you are craving some rich red wine or sweet and delicate honey do take a brake and come visit the Heritage Valley. The Condor Sanctuary and Fillmore Fish Hatchery are different sights and stops which are found comfortably along Los Padres National Forest. There are so many places to see, visit and things to do in the area, so do yourself yourself a favor and come enjoy enjoy them. The best part is that t hat they are located conveniently about an hour north of Los Angeles, Angeles, a little over an hour south of Bakersfield and only only an hour east of Santa Barbara. “The last, best small town in Southern California!”

Santa Clara River Valley Railroad Historical Society The Society was founded in 1993 to "assist in the preservation of the railroad corridor between Montalvo and Saugus, California, so as to maximize the economic, educational, environmental, and recreational value this historical asset to the residents of the Santa Clara River Valley and the surrounding area. To this end it is the interest int erest of this organization to acquire, preserve, restore, restore, exhibit and operate historic railroad equipment, and to acquire, preserve, display, and make available for study artifacts, information, and photographs pertaining to railroad equipment, structure and operations in the Southern California region," The Society consists of a cross section of volunteers from throughout Southern California who possess a wide variety of expertise in the public and private sectors. The Society offers the opportunity to interested people to participate as supporting or active associates and to have fun in the process. Working in cooperation with the Fillmore and Western Railway Company of Fillmore, California, the Society has been successful in preliminary efforts to exhibit and operate various pieces of railroad equipment between the cities of Santa Paula and Fillmore. Full Active Associates have the opportunity to join the Fillmore and Western Western operating train crew as car attendants; be tour guides of the Movie Train yard and Equipment; help with the turntable and roundhouse projects; and contribute to many other special rail events, such as our recent role role as "Ambassadors" aboard Metrolink trains. Whether you have operating, technical, mechanical, metal working, railroad or similar skills - or you just want to learn more about railroads - the Society would like to have you join us.
