Hello!
A note from the Editor
Trish Latimer Editor
Welcome to our October issue! The beginning of September marks the ‘back to school’ period, something every parent either loves or hates (depending upon just how stressful the holidays have been!) I know when my children were small, I used to love having my crafting time back! I hope everyone manages to get some quality crafting in this month. We have some stunning projects to inspire you in this issue. Tracy Evans has created the most amazing skull project for us, something to experiment with before Halloween next month perhaps? Check it out on page 18 We have some truly amazing projects from Cat Kerr this month. Cat has been a long time idol of mine, so I’m thrilled she is sharing her wonderful designs with us. Have a look on page 6. Lou Withers shares her quirky take on an altered book on page 22. Totally genius idea to use a template to shape the pages, it looks amazing as I’m sure you’ll agree! We also have a Foamiran flower tutorial by (queen of all things Foamiran) Emilia Sieradzan, a wonderfully upcycled tea bag project by Ruth Mescall, and some fabulous altered birds in our 3D Challenge gallery in this issue! Lots for you all to experiment with, and don’t forget, I would love to see what you create! Email me, or share on our Facebook page! Have a wonderfully crafty month everyone!

Heart Full of Hopes Tag By Cat Kerr One of my favourite stamps from the ‘I See You’ collection is the girl’s face design, and as soon as I started working on this tag I knew she would make a perfect focal point. To help her pop from the tag, with so much texture and colour happening behind her, I decided to keep her white. Adhere paper onto chipboard, trim edges and then stamp the background with the floral and bee stamps. Add texture to the tag by using Matte Medium to glue on fabric scraps, string and mini stones. Using a dry brush, dust the tag with white gesso. Water down Coastal Waters paint and add it to the tag. When dry, add metallic lustre to the raised elements. Adhere chipboard arrows and cover in metallic lustre. Finish tag by adding the girl’s face image, additional trim, word stickers and splatters of Magenta paint.

Be Still Pendant By Cat Kerr These pendants are fun and easy to make. You can use any shape bezel and can vary the design depending on the stamps you use. Press the clay into the bezel and flatten down. Press the ‘I believe in the perseverance of possibility’ stamp into the clay. Add metallic powder to colour the surface of the clay. Mix Amazing Clear Cast Resin and add a layer of the resin to the bezel and leave it to cure for 24 hours. Stamp the bee design using the watermark ink pad, cover with white embossing powder and melt with a heat gun. Add a rub on word to the top of the bee and cover in another layer of resin to seal and protect. To finish, add a sprinkle of glitter!
Perspective Shadowbox By Cat Kerr
Something I often remind myself is… it’s all a matter of perspective. Add texture to the inside of the shadowbox by gluing on some cardboard, fibre scraps and micro beads. Cover in gesso. Add Gold, Turquoise and Black paints to the inside of the box. Stamp chart design onto a piece of Transparency. Add holes and brads and glue in place. Using an old credit card, scrape colour onto the front of the box and splatter on some Blue Grass Green paint. Cover the rest of the box in cardstock and finish off by adding elements to the front of the box.

Resin Paper Bracelet By Cat Kerr
A while ago, I made a huge batch of resin paper. This was just one of the projects I made with it. Add a non-stick mat to your work surface. Make resin paper by coating paper in Amazing Clear Cast Resin and leaving to cure for 24 hours. I used vintage book paper. Once dry, peel the resin sheet off the non-stick surface and simply cut into desired shapes. One side will be shiny and the other side will be matte. Stamp your image onto the dull side then add more resin on top of the stamped image. Whilst the top layer of resin is still wet, sprinkle with glitter and leave to cure. To complete the bracelet; drill holes and assemble using jump rings and chain.

“Understanding the different properties of PaperArtsy’s Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics has opened up many more opportunities to use them in my work. The translucent paints allow the text underneath to be read easily so are perfect for bible art journals and planners alike.” 10

Project: Bible Journalling
A Time for Everything DESIGNER TIP…
Re-organise your stash of PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics into translucent and semi-opaque/opaque. It may just transform your use of these paints; it certainly has for me!
Discover how best to use your PaperArtsy paints to develop beautiful layers of colour. By Sarah Anderson
I
don’t know about you, but I buy paints by colour; the ones that sing to me from the shelf by their shade, or sometimes their evocative name. This usually works out fine but PaperArtsy’s Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics aren’t all created equal; some are translucent, some semi-opaque and others opaque. I have been meaning to get to grips with this knowledge for a while and a workshop with Jo Firth-Young gave me the perfect opportunity. In the workshop we used a number of opaque paints, which give good solid colour coverage, and layered some of them with translucent paints, which changed their colour depending on what they were painted onto. After the workshop I went home, re-organised my chalk acrylics by property, and had a play with the translucent ones in my bible. Painting over the whole page, including text, in a bible, is popular in bible art journalling circles at the moment but I like to still be able to read the words. Using translucent chalk acrylics not only allows this, but forms a fabulous base for stamping on, and the ink doesn’t bleed through to the other side!

1 Paint a sheet of deli paper with Pumpkin Soup paint. Set aside to dry.
2 Add Beach Hut paint to craft mat. Pick it up with a brayer and roll in the middle of your page.
3 Repeat with South Pacific paint, then Inky Pool, and brayer to the right of the first shade. Smudge together with baby wipes.
4 Dab Limelight paint through the Dancing Leaves stencil with the Cut ‘n’ Dry Foam. Outline stencilled leaves with a fine Biro pen.
5 Repeat stencilling with Cherry Red and Zesty Zing paints. Layering these colours creates opaque brown leaves.
6 Use a VersaFine ink pad to stamp the time words into the margins. Mask with paper to vary which words appear.
7 Stamp time words on scrap paper before repeatedly stamping onto painted deli paper. Stamp watch faces on top.
8 Stamp the top of the pocket watch onto the page. Attach watch faces with a glue stick.
9 Stamp the mosaic of clock imagery onto the deli paper and trim into squares, and strips. Adhere to page.
To finish the project: Add white dots to leaves with a fine, white Sharpie pen or similar. On the opposite page, add shades of blue Fresco Finish as before. Stamp numbers and words before adding a pocket watch.

One Ink Pad
Challenge Achieve more cohesive designs by limiting yourself to just one colour. By Kath Stewart TIME SAVING IDEA…
Why not try creating cards using different colours of Distress Oxide inks.
W
ith autumn fast approaching I wanted to create a stunning sepia look and challenged myself to achieve this using only one ink pad. Distress Oxide inks, with their unique fusion of dye and pigment ink and ability to react with water, are perfect for creating a tone-on-tone effect. The ink pad I chose to use for this project was Vintage Photo.
Materials Stamps Kath used... • Stampers Anonymous/Tim Holtz: Slate and Stone; Illustrated Garden; Flutter; Ponderings
Other materials… • Distress Oxide: Vintage Photo • Ranger: Glossy Accents

• Tim Holtz Idea-ology: Quote Chips • Crinkle ribbon • Twine
“I am a freelance tutor and demonstrator and so lucky to do what I love and love what I do. I realised many years ago that magic happens when you put inks, stamps, papers and paints together and have been on a wonderful journey of discovery ever since. ”

3 Ink Slate design with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide and stamp background. Use a Detailer Brush to activate ink and create shadows. Add splatters.
4 Ink the image from Illustrated Garden lightly and stamp three times across the bottom of the card.
5 Ink and stamp the sentiment three times using the Stamp Platform to achieve a much darker finish.
6 Stamp butterfly onto the card and again onto watercolour card. Colour images with the Detailer Brush, fussy cut and layer to create dimension.
To finish the project: Ink around the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide using a blending tool and add twine and a bow, an Idea-ology Quote Chip and Glossy Accents to the bodies of the butterflies and flower centres.

“I am always looking for different ways of using moulds, so using them to cast molten wax seemed like a perfect way to create colourful embellishments. It works wonderfully and the detail is fantastic!” 18

Project: Wax Casting
Wax Crayon PENNY SAVERS…
Use up old candles instead of crayons. Break them up and melt inside the mould.
Skull Create fabulously colourful forms by casting old wax crayons in heat-resistant moulds. By Tracy Evans
I
love casting with molten wax crayons, the effect is fabulous and completely different each time. Here I decided to try something more spooky for the forthcoming Halloween season! A skull!
For this technique it is best to use moulds that can take some heat as they will come under heat when the wax crayons are melted. Any cheap wax or recycled crayons work well for this technique, simply break up the crayons and melt them into the mould; it is best to melt a layer at a time and tap the mould onto the work surface to make sure the wax moves into all the details of the mould.

1 Select your wax crayons; you can add as many colours as you like. Use a heatresistant mould.
2 Break crayons up into small pieces and gradually add to the mould whilst melting with a heat tool. Add crayons a layer at a time.
3 Add a second layer of crayon. Tap mould onto work surface to ensure the molten crayon moves into all crevices.
4 Continue with the same process; adding and heating wax then tapping the mould onto the work surface.
5 It is important that the melted wax covers all the detail within the mould.
6 Continue until the mould is completely full, tap the mould once more and then allow to cool completely before removing.

Project: Altered Book
FaceBook An art journalling meets altered book project where mindfulness is key! By Lou Withers
DESIGNER TIP…
Try to use tone-ontone colouring when stamping on paint.
J
ournalling has become a huge part of my creative journey, as well as my go-to self-help mindfulness process. It helps me to exorcise thoughts and feelings and for Harry Potter fans, my journal is my ‘Pensive’.
I wanted to create a small journal using an old book. Today’s world is really focused on social media so I decided I wanted to create my own take on the idea of Facebook. I cut my pages out using the Indigoblu face profile stencil as a guide, then I chose quotes and sentiments for each face. The mindfulness of the whole project has been the love and enjoyment of the process of creating it. And as with all my journals, it’s never finished.

Many old books, due to their binding cannot be recycled, so just end up in landfill.

Foamiran
Florals
Craft amazingly realistic looking blooms using Foamiran! By Emilia Sieradzan DESIGNER TIP… Spray your Foamiran flowers with fixative so they hold their shape.
F
oamiran flowers are very popular all over the world. Foamiran is a very thin stretchy foam. You can create any size and shape of the flower using Foamiran. I use Foamiran flowers mostly for my crafts but they can be used for home décor, wedding bouquets, wreaths etc. Making foamiran flowers is very relaxing and enjoyable, especially when you see the result of your work in minutes! To start an adventure with flower making you do not need any special equipment. The most important materials are Foamiran and scissors. Other useful items include ink or oil pastels, stamens and gems for flowers centres. Some people use an iron to heat the Foamiran before shaping, but it is not necessary. If you do use an iron, remember to set it to a medium heat with the steam setting off. Place the Foamiran on the iron for about four seconds and continue to shape. Foamiran can also be die cut very easily, you can even die cut up to six layers at once! For inspiration, tips, techniques and giveaways I invite you to join the Facebook group I have created – ‘Handmade Foamiran Flowers’.

Project: Marbling
Nail Polish
Marbling Use nail polish to create strikingly colourful marbled prints. By Trish Latimer DESIGNER TIP…
Have plenty of nail varnish remover on hand for the clean up – you will find your hands covered in polish!
M
arbling onto paper using various mediums is another one of those ‘old school’ techniques, techniques that should be in every crafters repertoire! No need for loads of expensive kit, no need for complicated instructions, just loads of messy fun! The sense of excitement each time you ‘pull’ a fresh design from the surface of the water is so much fun, no two are ever the same. I’ve chosen to use nail polish to marble with in this instance, the colours are so bright and vibrant, and everyone is bound to have some lurking in a drawer somewhere!

Step-by-step... Nail Polish Marbling 1

3

1 Fill a large foil tray with tepid water. If the water is tepid you give yourself a longer time to work with the varnish, cold water hardens it straight away.
2 Drip in a drop or two of the first colour of varnish. The idea is that it spreads across the surface, not sinks to the bottom of the tray.
3 Drip in more colour. Work quickly, as you don’t want the varnish to harden before you get a chance to swirl it!
4 Gently drag the colours into each other using a toothpick or a bamboo skewer
5 Press watercolour paper firmly down over the swirled polish. Press through the surface of the water, but don’t let the paper touch the bottom of the tray.
6 Quickly remove the paper and leave to dry naturally.
To finish the project: Add black splatters to the marbled background by flicking it with black paint. Stamp the figure, cut out and adhere to the background. Mat and layer the marbled panel to a blue, then white cardstock panel. Doodle around the edges, then add a sticker word to finish.
DESIGNER TIP…
Resist the urge to touch the paper until it’s dry, as the nail polish ‘skin’ can rub off unless it’s left to totally dry off and harden.

This background is created in exactly the same way as the background in the main project, but in this case the lines of colour are much more subtle. As you experiment with this technique, you will discover how many drops of polish to use, in what order, and how to swirl the polish in order to achieve the look you’re after. Of course, this is never foolproof and you can’t guarantee what you’ll get, but you will have fun trying!

Tinned Mushrooms
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Titbelsoeur
To add colour to the tin, I used alcohol inks to represent the variety of colours you find in a forest and the way they mix together. I then stamped the mushrooms onto a watercolour paper and used Distress ink pads as watercolours to colour the mushrooms with delicate shades. To finish, I arranged and adhered the stamped images onto the tin to create a 3D scene.

An Oxide Bouquet
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Lesley Mackenzie First create three backgrounds using Distress Oxides. Use blue tones for the jar, green for the ivy and pinks/oranges for the flowers. Rub ink onto your craft mat and spritz with water. Dab white cardstock into the ink, dry and repeat the process, building layers of colour. Stamp and emboss the jar design, two ivy images and the florals on the relevant background papers. Cut out images, but only cut the three large flowers from the floral design. Stencil trellis pattern onto the card using Fossilised Amber ink and a makeup sponge. Use silicone gel or foam pads to attach the stamped elements to the card and create a 3D effect. For added dimension, shape the petals and jar by rolling over a pencil to round the edges.

Give It a Swirl Box
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Jennie Boxall Paint the box all over with a dark colour and dry thoroughly. Add embossing ink through a mask. Don’t worry if it looks messy, it’s part of the charm of the piece. Do the same with stamps on the top of the box. Add clear embossing powder and heat. Add the embossing in stages, to avoid smudging. Once cool, sponge two or three colours all over. To remove the paint from the embossed areas, dab with a damp cloth. Next, simply add a clasp or just a gorgeous piece of vintage jewellery to add a focus. Finally add painted wooden beads as feet.
Free as a Bird
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Gemma Hynes I have been very interested in colour lately and how colours blend and mix together, especially yellows, blues, and greens, which work well together without becoming muddy. These colours were my main source of inspiration for this project. Keeping my colours limited and starting with very pale layers allowed me to finish with brown and black ink so that some areas of my card popped out from the background. The very first layers were created by spreading ink onto a mat, spraying with water and pushing the card into the mixture, remembering to dry the card between layers. If the card becomes too saturated with water it will lose its stability as a card base. I stamped over the top using the same inks.

Mini Mystery Boxes
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Angie Coomber First I used Distress Oxides to make two masterboards in slightly different colourways, as well as colouring a book page and two matchboxes. By colouring many items at once, I had plenty of material to create different matchbox elements. The elements were decorated further using background stamps and stencils and then cut to the right sizes. The focal images were stamped onto the masterboards too, making everything easy to assemble. The edges of the boxes, cards and book were edged with Ground Espresso Distress Ink to make the colours pop, as well as being embossed with clear embossing powder to give a bit of shine. The boxes were given little ‘treasures’ in the bottom of them (glued in using 3D Gel). I made a mini journal to go in one matchbox and some journalling prompt cards for the other one. The handles were made using ribbon and charms.
Life, Laugh, Love…
By The Artistic Stamper Designer, Debs Smith I love Finnabair’s makes and find them very inspiring. The jamboree bags from The Artistic Stamper are ideal for that sort of project, you just never know what you’ll get! Start by laying elements out onto the canvas and take a photo. Add texture to the canvas by adding paste through a mask or stencil. To create three dimensional drips, use a hot glue gun. Use a heavy medium as an adhesive for the bits and pieces. At this stage it doesn’t matter what colour anything is, as it will all receive a coat of gesso. Once the gesso is dry, apply paint; with this project I have used just one bold colour!

DESIGNER TIP…
Arrange individual teabags onto the background first to help you decide where extra stamping and embellishments are needed.
for Tea Use teabags to create beautifully soft and muted designs. By Ruth Mescall
T
he idea of recycling used tea bags and incorporating them in mixed media work isn’t new, but it’s something I’ve been keen to explore. Textile artists have used teabag paper for a long time as it’s very light, can be easily stitched into and is available to buy in sheets. I decided to create a patchwork panel and incorporate some found objects into it. I’ve even used the tea bag string in the project by wrapping it around the rusted metal embellishments. Any tea bags can be used, just leave them to dry out thoroughly overnight after use. Once dry, they can be carefully unpicked, emptied and flattened out, ready for use in your mixed media projects.

1 Carefully unfold several empty teabags and using archival inks, stamp a few images on each teabag.
2 On a rectangular piece of interfacing, layer up torn and whole teabags, securing with dots of dry glue.
3 Stamp chosen floral images centrally on three teabags and heat emboss in Seafoam White. Refold into a tea bag shape.
4 Add more stamping then sprinkle on Distress embossing powder and heat set.
5 Add stitched detail to secure background to interfacing. Add skeleton leaves and embossing enamel. Secure teabags.
6 Using the edge of an old card and white paint, add lines and to the collage.
To finish the project: Add rusted embellishments and more hand stitching if desired. Secure the collage with glue to an A4 piece of watercolour cardstock which has been mounted onto thick card.
DESIGNER TIP…
Use white space; mounting the collage on a crisp white background really helps the viewer to focus in on all the tiny details.

Project: Shadowbox Assemblage
Kingdom
of Rust DESIGNER TIP…
Acrylic skins can be die cut. And they’re tough and durable for backgrounds too.
Use scrap materials and unusual ageing techniques to craft a unique shadowbox assemblage piece. By Fran Westmoreland
M
ost of the methods I have used on this project are cost effective and allow you to have fun practising on the techniques without blowing your budget! The base of the project is an old gift box with some cotton spools as legs. Using a good strong glue to attach the legs is advisable. To create an aged texture on my shadowbox make, I applied Rust Paste and developed a faux crackle by combining heat embossing and gesso. I really love the finished effect as it transforms the plain new gift box into a beautiful rustic looking container for art. For the acrylic ‘skin’ technique, a non-stick craft mat, baking paper or silicone mat is an essential piece of equipment, as it will allow the paint to be peeled off the surface once thoroughly dry. Natural drying time works best, (I left mine overnight) although you can speed up the drying process with a heat tool which will set the top layer of paint. I used liquid inks with gesso but you can also use paints or powdered pigments instead for different finishes.

1 After adhering the spools to the bottom of the box, paint with black gesso.
2 Stamp sides of the box with clear ink, sprinkle with embossing powder and heat set.
3 Dry brush white gesso over stamping to highlight the crackle effect.
4 Apply Rust Paste to box and legs using a brush and palette knife to achieve varying thicknesses.
5 Using a palette knife, spread gesso onto a non-stick and add drops of ink. Swirl into gesso.
6 Once dry, stamp butterflies with StazOn ink, as it is designed for use on non-porous surfaces. Cut out images.
7 Dampen watercolour paper and the brush. Pick watercolour paint up with the brush and blend the colours together on paper.
8 Sprinkle salt crystals over the wet paper, dry with a heat tool, then scrape off the excess salt to give a mottled effect.
9 Spread thick gesso through a stencil. Add embossing powder over the wet gesso before melting, then outline with a white pen.
To finish the project: Glue the backing card onto the back of the box and create a forest floor with twigs and moss adhered with 3D Gel. Create a crown by coating thick cardstock with gold Rust Paste. Adhere paper flowers, leaves, net and the stamped butterflies. Love and Luck
Materials
The wooden birds are made of high quality wood, and their flat and solid surface makes them perfect to write, stamp or paint on. They even look cute without decoration! I made two talismen; objects that will bring good luck. I intend to give them to friends who will be spreading their wings in the near future and are leaving for a journey around the world. I hope the birds will bring them luck. I created layered backgrounds using paint, stencils and stamps and made marks with a black pen and a white Sharpie. To finish off, I adhered torn strips of homemade washi tape. I stuck a few strips of blank paper tape to a non sticky surface and stamped text on top using violet paint. I added parts of that tape to both birds.

Vintage Style Bird
By Trish Latimer
I decided to create a very chunky bird form, so I glued both bird shapes together. I covered the resulting large bird with old book papers, and once dry, covered with a wash of brown paint. The thin wash gives a hint of colour, whilst still letting the text show through. I stamped Kassa’s Bloom onto tissue paper using white paint, then adhered using Gloss Mod Podge. I added a couple of the flowers and made sure the whole bird had a layer of Mod Podge to ensure the glossy look was uniform. Once dry, I drilled two holes and inserted two wire ‘legs’ I had created earlier.

When I was growing up we had a Dala horse on a window sill in our home. This beautifully painted, carved wooden Swedish folk art held so much fascination for me that when I received these two wooden birds, I was instantly transported back to that bright and beautiful creature. The Dala horse has definitely inspired this project for me. I chose a complementary colour combination and used stamping to reflect the hand-painted folk art detail but also keeping the design simple and striking in order to evoke the simplicity of that Dala horse on my childhood window sill.

Sacred Steampunk Birdies By Riikka Kovasin
I turned my wooden birds into rustic steampunk creatures! I started by adding different metal embellishments to them using gel medium as the adhesive. I tried to mimic the shape of the bird with my choice of items. I also made halos for the birds using cardboard and a picture wheel die. After drying, I then treated the birds both with Rust Paste and Patina Paste sets. I used the turquoise paste of the patina set in places and concentrated on the rust effect on others. I painted the halos with the metallic copper paint from the patina set. I finished with touches of copper and gave the halos a coat of Sparks to really make them shine.
Rusty and Flora: The Odd Pair By Deb Wainwright
These little birds have a fabulous surface to work on. The tissue wrap stuck to it like a dream and took very little rubbing to achieve a nice and smooth finish. Next I applied gesso and again, the surface covered really well, needing only one coat. Having a solid surface helped with applying the elements, and once dry, the whole thing was very stable; this made applying the paint to the cogs so much easier. The gessoed bird also had a lovely surface, which was great to stamp on. This made the painting of the flowers easy. Adding gems helped to bring them together nicely as a very odd pair.

Ready, Set, Stamp! An Abundance of Nature
The themes and colours for this month's gallery were:
This issue our collection is inspired by the beauty of nature all around us.
Verdant hues, Nature themes, The Great Outdoors, Accents of Deep Plum
Song Bird By Sarah Gaskell I just love the Scribbly Bird stamps from Dina Wakely and this nature theme gave me the perfect opportunity to use them. I stamped this cute little guy on a page from a road map and cut him out. The inky background was created by putting Distress Inks onto a stencil, spritzing with water and stamping onto watercolour paper, then adding a little more Distress ink with a brush where more was needed. The stencil image doesn’t show up, but instead it leaves a lovely grungy texture. I then stencilled text using Plum archival ink and splattered the background with plum and green Art Alchemy paints. The bird was glued on, and the background was edged with Fern Green archival ink and matted onto sheet music paper.

Down in the Forest By Fran Westmoreland This card is inspired by the fresh, vibrant colours and textures of a forest after rainfall. First I stamped the Flights of Fancy leaf design onto standard acetate with clear ink and then covered it with mint embossing powder and heat set. The background was created with a net material adhered with gesso, and sprayed with green mica sprays. I then added spots of embossing powder around the card. To decorate, I simply layered die cut circles, bark and additional accents of plum coloured embellishments.

Nature Never Betrays By Leanne Harris I started this project by swiping the top of the cardstock through Dusty Concord and Peeled Paint Distress Ink that I had pressed onto my craft mat, and sprayed with water. I then used household bleach to paint the moon and clouds. Next, I added the hills by wiping green Distress Inks downwards over torn copier paper. I then stamped the bench in VersaFine ink and a little bit of Memento Elderberry. All the trees and little creatures were then stamped with a mixture of Elderberry and the green inks to show the light and shade. I finally returned to the sky to add rays of light through the clouds with more bleach. I finished by stamping the sentiment and matting and layering in white and plum coloured cardstock.

Looking up By Lynn Brown I thought this stamp set from Sheena Douglass fitted the theme perfectly and the couple with their dog from Crafty Individuals look right at home in the scene. Using a MISTI, I stamped the tree scene several times to build up a deep plum colour, I then stamped in brown to add depth and then again with the plum. I scribbled my Aquamarkers in shades of green onto a glass mat and blended the with glycerine onto the card with a blending tool. I added in blue for the sky and repeated the process. Next, I used a wet paint brush to pull some of the plum ink into the green to form shadows under the tree. I then splashed the sky with water to faux bleach it and form clouds and shadows. Finally, I used a black Sharpie to edge the artwork and mounted onto another piece of white card also edged with a Sharpie.
Materials STAMPS: Crafters Companion Sheena Douglass – A Little Bit Sketchy Looking Up; Crafty Individuals – CI474. INKS: Memento – Grape Jelly; VersaFine – Vintage Sepia. OTHER: Crafter’s Companion – Sheena Stamping Card; glycerine; Sharpie pen – Black; Aquamarker pens; MISTI.
There are Always Flowers By Riikka Kovasin I thought this sentiment stamp fitted this time of the year perfectly. The autumn is closing in, nature is hibernating for the winter, but there’s always flowers for those who want to see them. The focal point of the card is the bunch of beautiful deep plum roses. I first stamped the blooms onto a piece of patterned paper using archival Ink. I then coloured a piece of white cardstock with acrylic paints, mixing dark blue and magenta paints to make a perfect plum colour. Next, I stamped the roses with embossing ink on top and embossed the pattern with white powder. I then cut the roses out and mounted them onto my card using foam dots. I also added some splashes with the same mixture of paints to the patterned paper and mounted the first piece of patterned paper on top of another. To complete the design, I used some twine to embellish the card and drew a frame around the edge of the card.

Nature Says Hello By Scrapper Myra

Just by reading the theme of this call, I thought about my beautiful hometown of Puerto Rico. I have the privilege to live in this tropical archipelago. This means lots of greens, trees, flowers, mountains, rivers, beaches and more… To make my quick and easy card, I used awesome patterned paper depicting beautiful trees, combined with amazing stamps from Latina Crafter. Stamp the flowers on different green tones of cardstock and cut out, finishing up with Enamel Dots in the centres. Stamp the sentiment on a doily, adhere to the patterned paper base card, and tie with baker’s twine. Adhere all elements to card. Arrange the flowers in a balanced composition.

Glorious Greens By Shelagh Metselaar
Reader Submission
Here I have created a quick stencilled and stamped card that could be easily adapted to suit any occasion. Firstly, tape stencil to a watercolour paper square and blend green inks, beginning with Twisted Citron, towards the centre. Stamp leaves, two flowers and four butterflies on scrap watercolour paper with Picket Fence and heat emboss. Scribble two greens from Inktense Blocks set over leaves, spritz with water and then blend with a paint brush. Blend greens from ink pads over flowers, spritz one with water, blot with kitchen paper then scrunch up, unfold and leave to dry. Blend Dusty Concord over butterflies; spritz and soak two, blot, scrunch and dry. Glue stamped images onto stencilled card, and add sequins and eye pins all with Glossy Accents.
Materials STAMPS: Chocolate Baroque – Sketchy Doodles Landscape. INKS: Distress – Picket Fence; Twisted Citron; Iced Spruce; Bundled Sage; Cracked Pistachio; Dusty Concorde. OTHER: Clarity stencil – Wild Seed Head; Derwent - Inktense Blocks; Stampendous embossing powder – White Pearl; Ranger – Glossy Accents; eye pins; sequins.

Verdant Meadow By Sue Wherry
Blend Distress Inks using a duster brush onto a square piece of watercolour card. Start at the top with palest green down to darkest green. Cut dies from watercolour card. Use the negative of these as a stencil and dab with green ink, adding a touch of Seedless Preserves to the tips of the flowers. Spray with water and dab with tissue to give a ghostly effect. Stamp the flower stamps using the Distress Inks as shown. Again spray with water to give a misty effect. Leave to dry. Colour die cut flowers with Distress pens, spritz lightly with water, and dry. Arrange and glue onto base design as shown. Finally mat and layer. I added a strip of card towards bottom edge and a torn word from an old dictionary which I distressed with the inks.

But why not use the stamp in other scenes? Trish created a rainbow of stars for her art doll to hold, nothing ‘seaside-y’ about that! We are also offering a spiral shell design as our digital image this month, another that can be used in lots of different ways! We would love to share any creations made with these designs (or any other free images), so feel free to send in pictures of your creations to:

“The starfish stamp is gorgeous, it’s just so detailed! It’s great to use both in underwater scenes and as just as a regular star shape.”
A Very Wonderful Place By Trish Latimer
I used the starfish in a ‘traditional’ sense in this scene, an underwater style panel featuring a mermaid! I drew and coloured my whimsy girl mermaid (whimsymaid?), then placed a starfish in her hand. The wooden panel was coloured by smearing white, green and blue paint across the surface and it was then stencilled with white dots. The mermaid was placed onto the panel, and the scene was finished off by the addition of coloured strips of card to represent seaweed, more stamped starfish and some small pebbles.

Catch a Falling Star(fish) By Trish Latimer I think the starfish image can also be used successfully without going down the sea-themed route. To me it can also be a ‘regular’ star, so with that in mind I created an art doll, holding a string of rainbow stars. The art doll herself was created by paper piecing elements together: a stamped dress shape, stamped wings, a stamped face, and hand drawn legs and crown. I twisted some wire to form the arms, then glued the whole doll to a length of wire which I had inserted into the base.
See the World By Tracy Evans Add a few small drops of paint to a piece of white card, spritz with water and then press a second piece of scrap white card on top. Rub the cards together, pull apart and you now have two backgrounds. Spritz the paint a little more to blend and allow it to run down the card, then dry. Place a stencil onto the coloured background, apply texture paste through the stencil and then remove. Allow the paste to dry completely and then add seven lollipop sticks to the background for added texture. Add a piece of cheesecloth and cotton threads for further texture. Stamp three starfish onto the second piece of coloured background, cut out each starfish and then adhere to the decorative panel. Add pearls and a quote chip along with a remnant rub to complete.

“Whilst you are creating backgrounds, create several in the same sitting which can then be used for further projects in the future.”
Create Art Tag By Tracy Evans
Prime the tag with gesso. Once dry, paint the front of the tag with a layer of Tumbled Glass Distress Paint and whilst the paint is still wet, blend in a touch of Peacock Feathers randomly over the background. Repeat the process with touches of Cracked Pistachio and dry. Dry brush gesso lightly over the background to give highlights. Apply texture paste through a stencil onto the tag. Once dry, add five small lollipop sticks to the background of the tag. Paint sticks lightly, leaving some bare wood visible. Add cheesecloth, pearls and threads for added texture. Stamp three starfish onto a coloured background, then cut out each and affix to the tag. To complete the piece, lightly flick black, white and green paint onto the background to add delicate splatters. Apply Twisted Citron around a Quote Chip and adhere to the tag. Scribble Gathered Twigs Distress Crayon around the edges of the tag and smudge.

Beautiful World
By Anna-Karin Evaldsson White emboss the roses repeatedly on watercolour paper. Smear Distress Inks on a craft sheet, mist with water and pick up with a paint brush. Watercolour the background and flowers. Round the corners. Stamp the sentiment with Garden Patina ink. White emboss the butterfly three times on vellum. Cut out and layer on top of each other. Attach with a brad.
Materials STAMPS: Kaisercraft – Indigo Skies. INKS: Ranger Wendy Vecchi Archival – Garden Patina; Ranger Alcohol – Mountain Rose; Butterscotch; Turquoise; Ranger Tim Holtz Distress – Tattered Rose; Worn Lipstick; Peacock Feathers; Tsukineko – VersaMark; StazOn – Jet Black. OTHER: Sizzix Tim Holtz Bigz L die – Tiny Houses; Ranger – Grit Paste; Wendy Vecchi Stamper’s Anonymous – Clearly For Art Modeling Film; Ranger embossing powder – White; Tim Holtz Ideaology – Lace Trimmings; Bouquet Findings; Chit Chat Stickers; vellum.
DESIGNER TIP…
Use small stamps to create a pattern by repeatedly stamping. This technique is easy to do with clear stamps, as they are so easy to line up.
Butterfly House
By Anna-Karin Evaldsson Indigo Skies is such a fun and versatile stamp set. I first die cut a little house and then repeatedly stamped the dotted design with Garden Patina ink to create a house with dotted boards. The stamp is very easy to line up and was stamped on scrap paper once first, to give a more distressed look. Stamp the butterfly on Clearly For Art Modeling Film with Jet Black StazOn ink. Cut out and colour on the back with alcohol inks. Heat film with a heat tool and shape the wings. Staple to the roof and wall before assembling the house. Stamp part of the sentiment and complete with a sticker.

Simply Amazing!
By Linda Walmsley
This versatile stamp set works wonderfully when making quick and easy cards. Here I have created a pretty vintage style design using beautiful Distress Oxide inks to blend dreamy pastel colours. First, I simply stamped the images directly onto card and then used a water brush to gently brush out the colour from the edges to fill in the image. To finish the composition, I added a simple embossed greeting and a few spots of glitter glue.
DESIGNER TIP…
Sequins are really popular at the moment and give a nice subtle touch of sparkle to your projects.
Materials STAMPS: Kaisercraft – Indigo Skies. INKS: Tim Holtz Distress Oxides; VersaFine – Onyx Black; Memento DewDrops; VersaMark. OTHER: Small wooden box; IndigoBlu Gee-Soo-Good! – White; Americana Décor Chalky Finish paint; Prima Art Alchemy paint – Sparks; Metallique; Opal Magic; Imagination Crafts – Structure Paste; Tim Holtz stencil – Floral; WOW! Embossing Powder – Opaque White; Rich Gold; Clear Gloss; glitter glue; sequins.
Butterfly Cluster Card
By Linda Walmsley
To craft this card, I decided to go for a more modern clean and simple look by using bright, fun colours of ink. Stamp the butterfly onto a piece of white card and then repeat using coordinating colours of inks. Stamp half of the sentiment directly onto the card, then stamp the other half onto a strip of black card. Heat emboss the black card sentiment half in white and attach using foam pads to add dimension. A couple of sequins and glitter glue give a touch of added sparkle.

Amazing Tag
By Ruth Mescall
Place random drops of acrylic inks on the back of the tag, marble with a coffee stirrer and leave to dry. The shimmer will show through to the front of the tag. Use the border stamps and StazOn ink to create a backdrop for the butterflies. Stamp the sentiment at the base of the tag. Swirl inks on the back of the modeling film and when dry, stamp the butterfly twice in black archival ink and clear emboss. Heat again to shape before attaching both to the tag.
Materials STAMPS: Kaisercraft – Indigo Skies. INKS: StazOn – Jet Black; Ranger Archival – Black; Viridian; Aquamarine. OTHER: IZINK acrylic ink – Volubilis; Cactus; Turquoise; Clear Acrylic tag #8; embossing powder – clear; Wendy Vecchi Stamper’s Anonymous – Clearly For Art Modeling Film; fine gold pen.
Hello Card
By Ruth Mescall Place some drops of ink on a craft sheet and press a card lightly into the colours. Use the card to monoprint across a card blank, leaving a textured stripe. Once dry, mask off and stamp the roses to create a border. Make another butterfly in the same way as for the tag from the ‘Amazing Tag’ project. To finish the card add some gold dots with a pen and stamp the sentiment in the bottom right corner.
DESIGNER TIP…
If you use a tag instead of spare card for monoprinting you will have an extra tag that is ready for decorating.

Do you want to achieve natural-looking sepia tones using natural products? Look no further! By Riikka Kovasin
M
y name is Riikka and I’m a tea-aholic. I adore black tea and my favourite is Earl Grey. Other than the taste, I also love the colour of tea. It easily creates a nice, vintage colour on projects. I’ve been using tea and coffee since my childhood to tint treasure maps and make paper look aged, but for this article I wanted to push it further and discover what other effects it could be used for. In these techniques, I have tried to use the whole tea bag – so there should be some ideas to help to get your creative juices flowing! I also tried to think about a whole project, so there’s background ideas, focal point idea and even embellishments! So just put the kettle on and start crafting!

Technique 1: Put a Ring on It! This is a really easy technique to age paper and give it some character.

FURTHER IDEAS FITTING THE THEME...
Try the same techniques with coffee and see how the colour differs. Instead of a tea bag, use a coffee filter for the flower.
1 Spill tea onto a saucer and dip your cup in it. Make rings of tea on your substrate using your cup as a stamp. 2 Pour tea into a mini mister and crumple up the tag to make creases. Spray the tag with tea. 3 Use a heat tool to dry the tag and carefully smooth it out. The creases will have stained more than the flat areas.

Technique 3: Tea Wash
Tea is a fabulous colourant, not only for paper but for fabric too.
Use different strengths of tea to add sepia watercolour details.

1 Brew a cup of strong tea and choose the fabrics you want to dye. Natural fibres work better than polyester. 2 Let the fabrics sit in the tea for a while, then dry them with a heat tool or leave to air dry. 3 Stitch the pieces onto your project. Use the twine from the tea bag as your thread.
1 Stamp design with an ink such as archival that doesn’t smudge when wet. 2 Colour design with tea. Use either a couple of different strengths or add layers of one tea. 3 The most even colour is created using multiple layers, like working with watercolours.

Technique 4: What About the Leaves? The tea leaves inside the tea bag work beautifully as a texture paste when mixed with medium!
The delicate material of the tea bags turns into beautiful soft blooms with a few easy steps.

1 After using your tea bag, dry it thoroughly and cut it open. Pour the tea leaves out and save the bag. 2 Mix the tea leaves with Soft Matte Gel. The leaves will absorb the moisture so add them little by little. 3 Apply the paste through a stencil and leave to dry. Clean the stencil and silicone brush right away.
74
Technique 5: Tea Flowers
www.craftstamper.com
1 Either start with used and dried circular tea bags or trim the rectangle ones into circular shapes with scissors. 2 Layer three circles on top of each other and attach the layers with a few stitches. Add a button as the flower centre. 3 Use dry adhesive to attach the flower to your project or use a liquid one carefully as the material absorbs the moisture.

Tea Canvas Start your canvas by using technique 3 to make the background. After you have coloured the design, add texture to the canvas using technique 4. Attach pieces of fabric and cloth dyed using technique 2 to your canvas. Use gel medium as the adhesive. Attach a couple of tags on top, one made with technique 1 and the other with technique 3. Embellish the project with die cut leaves, old metal buttons, chipboard elements and flowers made using technique 5. Finish the piece with a few crystals and the title using glitter foam alpha.
Further Ideas
Journal Page
Start the journal page by ageing a piece of paper using technique 1. Attach the paper to your journal. Stamp a couple of circles onto the page and use technique 3 to colour them. Make the main composition using a tag made with technique 4 and some cheesecloth dyed using technique 2. Layer a tag made using technique 2 on top. Embellish the page using flowers made using technique 5 and also some chipboards and die cut leaves. The delicate leaves were cut from a tea bag material. Finish the page with crystals, glitter title and some handwritten journalling.

One Ink Pad Challenge on p.14
Kingdom of Rust on p.44
Free Stamp Makes on p.60
This issue, Kath Stewart challenged herself to create two stunning sepia coloured cards using just one colour of ink. Here you can see how she has used a gorgeous brick effect design to add rustic detail to the background of her tag. The rectangular design is echoed in the three dimensional sentiment on top.
To further adorn her gorgeous crown embellishment nestled atop her assemblage piece, Fran Westmoreland has added a cluster of coloured paper flowers and reindeer moss. The rough application of different colours of mica powders and paint gives the flowers a beautifully shimmering tattered vintage finish that we just can’t get enough of!
In this month’s Free Stamp Makes, our Editor, Trish has used the fab free star design to create a charming art doll holding a string of stars! Although the design looks like a starfish, Trish has cleverly shown it can also be used in all different styles of projects! Such a versatile little image!
Masterclass on p.70
Stamping Contrasts on p.64
Check out Riikka Kovasin’s absolutely fabulous Masterclass this issue! Using the humble teabag as her material, she has developed some ingenious techniques as well as crafting this beautifully layered project. Combining tea-dyed fabrics and teabag flowers with vintage elements, she has created thoroughly authentically rustic creations.
For our Stamping Contrasts feature, Anna-Karin Evaldsson has created two sensational butterfly-themed projects using the Indigo Skies stamp set by Kaisercraft. To accompany the butterfly on her card project, Anna-Karin created painterly roses using a combination of white embossing with watery inks. The bold colour and subtle white lines look exquisite on white cardstock.
Retailer Project: The Artistic Stamper on p.36 This issue we feature art by designers from The Artistic Stamper. The excitingly varied collection of works features this striking piece by Debs Smith. Layers of texture and embellishment were added before a final layer of gesso and strong plum paint. Debs demonstrates how best to use broken bits of jewellery to create jewelled adornment.

How long have you been a stamper, and how did you get started? As long as I can remember I have been handlettering. During my school years all my books were full of it. After that I began making cards; at first 3D ones, but then I discovered stamping. That must be about 20 years ago. Later on I discovered the rubber plates. Thanks to Louise from Art Journey, whom I met at a hobby show, I am now hooked.

What are your favourite kinds of stamps, and do you have a favourite stamp company? I like all kinds of stamps; animals, flowers, people etc. I like stamps from a lot of different stamp companies, such as Art Journey, Katzelkraft, Carabelle studio, Jofy from PaperArtsy, and also Penny Black’s flower stamps.

Describe your style, are you a messy kind of stamper or a more ‘clean and simple’ kind of person?! I like all kinds of styles. That’s my problem, I can’t choose! Sometimes I like to be messy and make colourful backgrounds, but I also like clean and simple cards; but why choose if you can do it all?!
Q A
What kind of projects do you like creating the most? I am a cardmaker who loves to create a canvas or a booklet every now and then. I also like to make art journal pages.

Apart from stamps, what is the one product you wouldn’t be without when you craft? Stamping without inks would be difficult of course, but at the moment I love my paints. Inks and paints, you can’t make a great background without them as far as I’m concerned!
“On this card I used the flowery stamps from Tim Holtz. The background started as a disaster. The grey Distress Ink was too dark. I had to go for plan B. I used some gesso, Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide… but this wasn’t enough. I almost threw it away, but then I used a stencil and some embossing paste from Wendy Vecchi; a very light paste, ideal for cards. More gesso and a text stamp made the background complete. The flowers were then loosely coloured with Distress Inks and water.” www.craftstamper.com
