Introduction Kangkong 1896 was written by Ceres C.S. Alabado and published in 1989, titled as such because of the status in life of the main character and because of 1896 was the start of the year when the Katipunan was established making it the year where the revolution was at its peak. Events that happened in real life are depicted inside the story but are altered by the author’s imagination. Works where the events that happened in real life are altered by the author’s imagination can be classified as a novel, because it shows both the author’s imagination and history or past events. Kangkong 1896 is set at the revolution of the Filipinos against the rule of the Spaniards because the author wanted to show the bravery and heroism the Filipinos have during those times. These two characteristics were both found in the main character of the story. He also showed the hardships of the Filipino revolutionary fighters during those times and how they persevered through all those hardships. These depiction of the different events and scenarios of the Philippine Revolution made the story contain different themes that would depict what the Filipinos experience under the rule of the Spaniards. The author uses narrative style that tells a story about the katipuneros seeking for freedom. She uses dialogues, disputes, actions and events in a sequence in order to have a great transition. Her other works are commonly related to the Philippines and she loves to write about the young people in the Philippines. *Insert Thesis Statement*
