Malaysian curriculum and syllabus esecially in regards to increasing English language roficiency roficiency amongst the nation has faced a fe! changes and innovations since the "ritish con#uered. Right after Malaysia got her indeendence in $%&'( the f irst hase of English Language Teaching )ELT* reform aims to develo national unity ost the +divide and con#uer, rule "ritish ractised in Malaysia. "ac- then( the methods used !ere grammar translation method )obectively teaching the grammar rules*( direct method )focuses on so-en English* and situational aroach )using everyday situations relevant to learners*.
The syllabus then !ere deemed too e/am0oriented( e/am0oriented( te/tboo- focused and subect content0biased( content0biased( therefore in $%'1( 2"3R and 2"3M !ere introduced under the 4e! Education 5olicy. ELT aroach changed to focus on effective communication. 6ocus !as on meaning and not structure( therefore 35M aer changed to English $778977 !hich !as more holistic as it tests reading( !riting and sea-ing. o!ever( critics critics mentioned that this reform !as not successful as( an effect( Malaysians !ere not e#uied and cometent enough to be global citi;ens. Research done sho!s that students esecially in rural areas lac-ed English roficiency due to limited classroom and outside classroom language oortunity
In $%%1( the third reform occurred due to globalisation and the revolution of ICT so the need for educated and -no!ledgeable !or-force increased. 35M English aer !as changed to English $$% !hich !as based on the Cambridge,s <0levels syllabus( literature comonent !as introduced to inculcate reading habits together !ith creative and critical thin-ing among students. Malaysian =niversity English Test )M=ET* !as introduced to hel e#ui ost 35M students reare themselves for higher learning institutions.
With the advancement in science and technology( the subect +English for 3cience and Technology )E3T*, !as introduced in 7119 for uer secondary school students focusing
on secific language s-ills necessary in this field. The shift of teaching Maths and 3cience from Malay to English done in the same year !as also seen as an effort to increase language roficiency in the field. 3tudents +born, during this era had better English roficiency as reflected during their tertiary education ho!ever( it !as not helful to students !ho are illiterate in English. They didn,t even learn anything during Maths and 3cience.
Recently( the Curriculum Revie! !as comleted and the 233R and 233M !as introduced. 5aired !ith 7$ st century classroom settings( students interact more in classroom( and seem more in#uisitive due to these changes.
