Density Lab Density is a characteristic property of a substance because you can identify a substance by its density. We found the density by finding volume and mass of an object and then divided the mass by the volume to solve for the density. In this lab we found the density the w hole object and its pieces to be the same. In this lab I learned about finding the mass, volume, and density density of an object. I learned that to find mass you use a triple-beam balance scale. And you would use a graduated cylinder to find the volume by using the water displacement method. I learned that to find density you have to divide mass by the volume. For mass the unit of measurement is in grams, for for volume it is centimeters cubed. cubed. And the unit of measurement for density is grams/centimeters cubed. I learned that the density of a whole object and the density of half that object are nearly the same. This happened for all our objects during this lab. Density of a material is its mass per unit volume. Meaning that density is found by dividing dividing the mass of an object by the volume of an object. Water is the only substance substance with the density of 1. If you have a tub of water the density density is 1. Even if you have have a cup full of water the the density is 1. Mass is a measure of the amount of material in an object. Mass does not change the objects position, movement or alteration of its shape. Mass is measured usually usually in the metric system. The mass we used in this lab was measured in grams. Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, liquid, solid, or gas. We used inches cubed as our unit of measurement for volume in this lab. lab. We used water displacement in this lab. Water displacement is a way to find the volume of a regular or irregular object. Water displacement occurs when an object is immersed in a fluid, pushing it out of the way and taking its place. The volume of the fluid displaced can be measured, and from this the the volume of the immersed object can be found. Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. He was the man who found about water displacement. displacement. He found that a sphere placed in a cylinder had 2/3s the volume and surface area of the cylinder it was placed in. A graduated cylinder is used to measure the volume of a liquid and or the volume of an object. A triple-beam balance is used to find the mass of an object or substance by using weights and balance scale. Finding the volume of a regular and irregular shaped object is the same. You would need a graduated cylinder to do so. With the graduated cylinder you would use the water displacement displacement method. To do this measure measure out an amount of water in the cylinder that can cover cover your object. Record the amount of water you put inside the cylinder. Now you would put in the object to the cylinder filled with water and record what the height is with the water in the cylinder. Then subtract the number you started out with from the number you have gotten when the object is in the water. The answer you get will be your mass in centimeters c ubed. During this lab I learned a number of things. I learned how to find the mass, volume and density of a regular object, and an irregular irregular object. I learned how to use a triple-beam balance and use a graduated cylinder right. When I was using the graduated cylinder, I learned how to use water displacement to find the volume of any object. It was interesting to find out that the density of a whole object was very close to the density of half the object despite having different mass and volume. Overall, this lab helped me gain knowledge that I can use in future e xperiments and labs.
