Los nombres se pueden clasificar en dos grupos: contables e incontables. Los contables son aquellos ante los que podemos poner un numeral. cmC' g1r1 two girls. one mrm, ten men Pueden ser singulares o plurales.

El articulo a 1 an se emplea en ciertas expresiones de velocidad, frecuencia o precio. En tales casos, se podría poner también per. THE A El artículo definido the se usa ante nombres específicos tanto en singular como en plural y ante nombres que ya han sido mencionados con anterioridad. The moon is very bright tonight. B The se emplea también ante nombres propios de: personas, cuando indicamos una familia por su apellido (the Smiths) , rios (the Nile}, mares (the Black Sea), montañas (the Alps), islas (the Canary lslands) , desiertos (the Sahara), algunos países (the Netherlands} . C The va seguido de un adjetivo cuando queremos expresar una clase de gente o animales. Only the rich can shop in this place. The Americans and the Spaniards are very competitive people.
D Los instrumentos musicales llevan artículos, pero los deportes no. 1play the flute, the piano and the guitar. 1hate playing footba/1 and tennis. E Con palabras como chapel , prison, hospital, school, market, no debemos poner artículo si vamos a ellas con el fin para el que se construyeron , pero debemos ponerlo, si vamos con otros fines, por ejemplo, a visitar. THE PLURAL FORM - EL PLURAL
A
El plural se suele formar añadiendo s al nombre (book ,. boaks). Sólo tienen forma plural los nombres contables. Los incontables no tienen forma plural. Reglas ortográficas 1
Cuando el nombre acaba en s, z, eh, x , sh y o se añade es. bus ~buses box • baxes tomato _,. tomatoes church ~ churches bush • bushes Pero hay algunas excepciones:

B Algunos nombres tienen sólo una forma plural y van seguidos de un verbo plural: glasses, savings, trousers, scissors. These scissors are sharp. C Ciertos nombres que acaban en s parecen plurales pero van seguidos de una verbo en singular: mathematics, gymnastics, politics, phonetics. Nota. Hay algunos nombres como news, advice, information, furniture que tienen sentido plural aunque llevan el verbo en singular. This is the news, read by Peter Smith. (Estas son las noticias leídas por Peter Smith.) Si quiero dar una sola noticia tengo que usar piece of news. Lo mismo ocurre con advice, information, furniture.

POSSESSION - LA POSESIÓN
Para expresar la posesión de personas, animales o países solemos emplear 's. A
Se usa 's después de un nombre que no acabe en s y sólo ponemos el apóstrofe si la palabra acaba en s. The bird's wing is broken. These are the girl's hats. (los sombreros de una niña) These are the girls' hats. (los sombreros de varias niñas)
B
Empleamos 's al final de nombres compuestos, es decir, de nombres formados por varias palabras. Today is my brother-in-Jaw's birthday. That's the Queen of England's yacht.
C
Si dos personas poseen la misma cosa se pone 's detrás de la última. Mary and Peter's wedding was /ove/y. Pero si cada una de las personas posee una cosa diferente se pone 's a cada una. Mary's and Jane's birthday. (cada una tiene su propio cumpleaños)
O Sin embargo hay unas cuantas frases hechas que si lo utilizan: 1 con expresiones de tiempo. a week's holiday (unas vacaciones de una semana) twenty minutes' break (un recreo de veinte minutos) today's paper (el periódico de hoy) 2

Si el verbo va en forma afirmativa, no empleamos any sino que pondremos no+ nombre, nothing, nobody o no one. None no va seguido de un nombre. THE IMPERATIVE- EL IMPERATIVO

A Empleamos el imperativo para dar órdenes, hacer sugerencias y pedir a alguien que haga algo. Come here! Have a drink. Help me with this big bag!
B El imperativo no se suele usar con sujeto, pero podemos añadirlo especialmente cuando queremos dejar claro a quién estamos dirigiéndonos. Join us. Peggy. Sit down, everybody. Somebody answer that phone! Tom don't move~
C Do se puede colocar antes de la forma afirmativa para dar mayor énfasis al imperativo. Esto suele ocurrir en peticiones educadas o quejas. Do sitdown. Do try and keep quiet.
Nota Cuando hay un imperativo seguido de un infinitivo se suelen unir con and, y se quita el to. Do try to keep quiet. 1 Do try and keep quiet. Come to visit us. 1 Come and visit us~
D Do se usa incluso con el verbo be (recuerda que no lo hace con ningún otro tiempo del verbo to be}. 1 para la forma negativa del imperativo. Don't be late! Don 't be silly' 2 para dar énfasis. Do be nice to Aunt Clara! Do be here on time!
E
A veces empleamos you delante de un imperativo para indicar que estamos irritados tanto en forma afirmativa como en negativa. Oon 't you try to cheat! Oon't you move!
Nota: En español la forma negativa se podría traducir por "ni se te ocurra ... " ; en la forma afirmativa, posiblemente indicamos la irritación con el tono. Oralmente, in inglés, debemos poner el acento en you. F
Para expresar el imperativo de primera persona del plural que tenemos en español (que en realidad indica una orden suavizada, o una sugerencia, pues se incluye la persona que la da), se utiliza let's (let us) + infinitivo sin to. Let's study! (¡Estudiemos!) Let's fínd a solutíon! (¡Encontremos una solución!) Let's revise the lesson! (¡Revisemos la lección!)
La negativa se puede hacer de dos maneras: Let's not shout! (¡No gritemos!) Don't let's follow them! (¡No les sigamos!)
Nota: Aunque las dos son correctas, se suele emplear más la primera.

El presente simple se emplea en los siguientes casos:
A Para expresar verdades generales o hechos. Water boils at 100 degrees. B
Para expresar hábitos o costumbres. Suele ir acompañado por expresiones que indiquen que la acción ocurre regularmente como every day, usually, frequently, etc. She wa/ks to school every day.
C
Para planes futuros, especialmente para referirnos a horarios o programas. En la oración debemos poner alguna expresión temporal indicando tiempo futuro. The train /eaves in an hour.
O Para contar chistes, historias , cuentos, acontecimientos deportivos, etc. Two people walk into a restaurant. One of them says to the waiter ... Fontana kicks the ba/1! lt's a goal! Expresiones de tiempo
Las siguientes expresiones de tiempo van al principio o al final de la frase: every day each year once a week on Tucsday regular/y daily yearly in the evening, etc. Las siguientes expresiones de frecuencia en cambio, aparecen delante del verbo principal, pero después del verbo to be: always often sometimes seldom usual/y general/y occasionally never
Reglas ortográficas Las terceras personas del singular añaden una s a la raíz del verbo pero en algunos casos hay que hacer algunas modificaciones. a

En presente simple, este tipo de preguntas comienzan con el auxiliar do o does (si se trata de la 3ª persona del singular), luego el sujeto y después la raíz del verbo, siempre sin to. Do 1 Do you Do we Do they

Cuando estamos preguntando sobre el sujeto de la frase empleamos las partículas who y what. Estas partículas son el sujeto de la pregunta. Who y what suelen ir seguidas de un verbo en 3ªpersona del singular. Sin embargo, en la respuesta el verbo puede ir en singular o en plural. Who goes home at three o'clock? Tina goes home at three o'c/ock. 1 The pupils go home at three o'c/ock. What makes a loud noise? A siren makes a /oud noise. 1 Drums make a /oud noise.

C
Para preparativos o planes en un futuro próximo. En este caso suele ir acompañado por expresiones de tiempo futuro. /'m meeting Barbara tonight.
D Para acciones que se repiten regularmente y que suelen llevar un sentido de queja, de monotonía. She is always Josing her keys. Nota: Cuando se modifica la rutina o se rompe un hábito, cambiamos el presente simple por el continuo. We usual/y have dinner at home, but today we're eating out.

Empleamos el pasado continuo para describir:
A Una acción que estaba ocurriendo en el pasado (no algo puntual, sino en proceso). La acción comenzó antes de dicho momento y seguramente continuó después. Fíjate que suelen expresar acciones largas. Estudia estos dos ejemplos: 1 was studying al! day yesterday. (parece que la acción de estudiar fué algo muy largo) 1studied al/ day yesterday. (solamente informas, no quieres dar la idea de cuánto tiempo pasaste estudiando) 1 was doing the washing up. 1did the washing up.
Este tipo de acciones suele ir acompañado de expresiones como all night, the whole day, the whole afternoon, for a long time, etc.
B Para dos acciones que estuvieron ocu rriendo al mismo tiempo. Whi/e you were reading the paper, 1 was doing my homework.
En este uso es muy frecuente encontrarnos expresiones como while, as , during, all day, all night, the whole day, the whole afternoon, etc. C
Para la más larga de dos acciones, que suele ser interrumpida por una más breve. 1 was singing a song when it began to rain. He was writing to me when he received my letter.

O Posibilidad de hacer algo. Para traducir este uso al español es muy adecuada la expresión "puede que" (may) o "pudiera ser que" (might). He may invite us to his party. They might win the match. E

A Obligación. Se emplea tambien para dar órdenes. 1 must revise my irregular verbs. (debo) You must dress up for the party. (debes)
B Necesidad imperiosa. You must vis1t the doctor. You are too thin. C
Deducción afirmativa. Expresa casi certeza de que algo es así basándonos en los hechos o circunstancias.
She has such neat notebooks. She must be a good student. (debe ser una buena estudiante) Nota: Recuerda que para una deducción negativa debes emplear can't.
He can't be an artist.
D
Para recomendar a alguien que haga algo.
You must go to England if you want to practise your Englísh. Nota: Must sólo se puede utilizar para hablar del presente y del futuro, no tiene pasado.

A Obligación, mandato. El sentido es prácticamente igual que must, quizás la diferencia está en que must lo suele emplear la persona que tiene autoridad, mientras que have to es una obligación que se impone uno a uno mismo. You have to be on time. (es tu obligación) You must be on time. (yo te lo impongo) Students have to wear uniforms. (esta es la regla) Students must wear uniforms. (Yo, el director, lo impongo) B Recuerda que must no tiene pasado, por tanto usamos had to para expresar necesidad en el pasado. 1had to go to school very early when 1 was in England.
C
Para expresar imposibilidad de hacer una elección. 1have to study or else /'// fail m y exam. 1 wi/1 have to undo al/ my knítting if the sweater doesn't fit me properly.
Nota: Will have to se emplea para expresar el futuro.

MUSTN'T, DON'T HA VE TO 1 NEEDN'T
A Mustn't se usa para expresar prohibición. You mustn't drink beer. You are too young.
B En ocasiones no queremos prohibir sino expresar que algo no es obligatorio o necesario. En estos casos empleamos don't have to 1 needn't. You don't have to eat al/ the soup it you don't want to. (no es necesario que 1 no tienes que ... ) He doesn't have to come so early. (no es necesario, pero no lo prohibo)
Nota: Fijate que have to necesita el verbo do para interrogar y negar.

Estos dos verbos son muy parecidos en la mayor parte de sus significados y usos, pero es importante señalar que ought to no es tan frecuente en forma interrogativa y negativa. La mejor manera de traducirlos al español es "debería".

Los adjetivos describen al nombre. Se usan de dos maneras básicas: 1

En este caso, el orden en que suelen aparecer suele ser: En primer lugar, los adjetivos que describen opiniones subjetivas tales como beautiful , ugly, unkind, clever, etc. En segundo lugar, los que describen hechos tales como big, small, young, old, new, etc. Si hubiera más de un adjetivo de los del segundo tipo, el orden suele ser tamaño, antigüedad, color, procedencia y material.
B Los adjetivos ingleses solo tienen una forma que vale tanto para el singular como para el plural y para describir nombres masculinos , femeninos o neutros.

Esta construcción recibe el nombre de contact o reduced clauses. Podemos darte un consejo. Si el pronombre relativo va seguido del verbo, no se puede omitir. Si después del relativo va un sujeto y un verbo, casi seguro puede omitirse. Nota. El relativo whose ("cuyo"), indica posesión , nunca es sujeto y no se puede omitir. Estudia la siguiente frase: The king ot Spam, who lives in Madrid . is ca/led Juan Carlos.
Si quitáramos la oración de relativo, no habría ningún problema para entender la frase principal , The king of Spain is called Juan Carlos. La oración de relativo, que como verás va entre comas, es un dato añadido, una "explicación". El antecedente de estas oraciones suele ser un nombre propio, de persona o de cosa, o contiene un posesivo como my, his, her, o el artículo definido the o algún demostrativo como this, that, these, those. Cuando el que realiza la acción, el agente, es obvio o desconocido o poco importante.

Para destacar la acción o el objeto, más que la persona que la hizo, de manera que aparezca como algo más impersonal.

Para subrayar el proceso o acontecimiento en lugar del agente que lo causa por ejemplo, en experimentos científicos, en recetas culinarias, etc.

Cuando de alguna manera queremos ocultar quién realizó la acción. Por ejemplo, para evitar señalar quién es el responsable o bien por modestia. The boys were punished. (no se dice quién los castigó) Our tiekets were lost. (evito decir quién los perdió) New ideas have been presented with great sueeess. (si las ha presentado el que habla, modestamente suele usarse la pasiva)
Nota. Debemos señalar que la pasiva se emplea mucho más en inglés que en español.

Existen una serie de verbos que no pueden ir en pasiva (intransitivos). Son los que no tienen complemento, es decir, que nadie "recibe" la acción del verbo. Dentro de este grupo tenemos los verbos arrive, come, die, exist, happen, have, live, etc. Consejos: 1

DIRECT ANO INDIRECT OBJECTS LOS COMPLEMENTOS DIRECTOS E INDIRECTOS

Ciertos verbos como give, lend , offer, pay, promise, refuse , send, show, etc. suelen ir seguidos de dos complementos, uno de persona (indirecto) y uno de cosa (directo). They gave John (indirecto) a warm welcome (directo).
La forma más frecuente de poner este tipo de frases en pasiva es tomar de sujeto de la pasiva el complemento indirecto de persona. John was giVen a warm we/come. La otra forma, la que sería semejante a la española, es mucho menos frecuente. A warm welcome was given to John.
B Como ves en el primer caso, se mantiene el complemento directo a pesar de ser una pasiva, algo impensable en español. Sin embargo, si traduces esta forma pasiva de la siguiente manera, no te resultará tan difícil. John was given a present. (A Juan se le dió un regalo.) The teacher was sent some books. (Al profesor se le enviaron algunos libros.)

El pretérito perfecto se usa para referirnos a acciones acabadas pero que tienen todavía relación con el presente. Con este tiempo damos más importancia al resultado o efecto de la acción, que al tiempo en que ocurrió. Por ello no lleva expresiones de tiempo pasado como ocurre con el pasado simple. He has done his exercises. (los ha hecho, acabado, pero no dice cuando) They have been to London. (han vuelto ya, pero no sabemos cuando estuvieron)
Recuerda que si no decimos cuándo ocurrió la acción, podemos utilizar el pretérito perfecto. En el momento que señalemos cuándo, hemos de poner pasado simple. '/ ha ve been to lreland." "When?" "/ went to lreland last year "
B El pretérito perfecto se refiere a acciones repetidas varias veces en el pasado. 1 have visited Cornwa/1 severa/ times. We ha ve phoned the airport three times without an answer C
También podemos usar este tiempo para acciones que empezaron en el pasado y que no se han terminado en el presente. 1 ha ve had thts house for ages. 1 ha ven 't read a novel since the school year began.

El pretérito perfecto indica en ocasiones, que la acción ocurrió en un momento que todavía no ha acabado. Suele ir acompañado por expresiones temporales como this morning , this week, this month, this afternoon, etc. This morning 1haven't smoked a single cigarette. /'m trying to give up smoking. This month we have done a lot of decorating, as we are having the weddíng at home.
Nota 1: Fíjate que las expresiones que empleamos deben indicar que quedan incluidos momentos tanto del pasado como del presente . Nota 2. She has bought, puede aparecer contraído she's bought. No debes confundirlo con el presente she is = she's.

Hay dos expresiones temporales típicas que acompañan al pretérito perfecto, for y since. Ambas indican que la acción empezó en el pasado y que continúa hasta el momento presente . For se usa para indicar la duración del periodo.

Nota 1 Si queremos hacer una pregunta sobre cuánto tiempo ha durado algo, hemos de hacerlo con how long. How long have you /ived m London? Nota 2 No se puede usar el presente simple o continuo para expresar cuánto tiempo lleva ocurriendo algo. Está mal decir: /'m liVing here for three years. También es incorrecto: 1/ive here since 1993. Además de for y since tenemos otras expresiones temporales que se emplean con el pretérito perfecto. Fíjate en cómo se construyen algunas de ellas, su colocación en la frase y en cómo se traducen. 1

En cambio, el pretérito perfecto se emplea para acciones separadas. Se podría contar cuántas veces ha ocurrido algo y por lo tanto, no es una acción ininterrumpida. (son varias películas, cada una distinta de la otra) They have been writing letters al/ morning. (una acción continua) They have written three Jetters this morning. (acciones separadas)
B El pretérito perfecto continuo se utiliza para indicar que la acción a la que nos referimos está incompleta, mientras que el pretérito perfecto suele indicar que está acabada. Who has been using my computer? (seguramente está encendido todavía) Who has used my computer? (es posible que me haya dado cuenta al encenderlo, no por haberlo visto encendido)
Nota: Recuerda que hay verbos que no pueden ir en tiempos continuos.

Los conectores because, as, since y seeing that que vamos a ver seguidamente tiene todos el mismo significado y van seguidos de una oración completa. Indican la razón o la causa de algo. En este caso, if puede sustituirse por when 1 whenever, ya que es algo que ocurre siempre. Water boils whenever it reaches 100°C.
B El imperativo puede emplearse también en la oración principal. lf you ha ve enough money, bring me a present!

En lugar de will también es posible utilizar modales como can, must, may, etc. en la oración principal. lf he comes in ten minutes, he can join us.
Nota: Recuerda que no se puede poner futuro (will) ni condicional (would) en la oración subordinada con if. Piensa que en español ocurre lo mismo: "Si vendrás, te veré" no es correcto.

El segundo condicional expresa una acción o un acontecimiento hipotético. Teóricamente podría ocurrir pero es improbable. Suele expresar una acción contraria al estado actual de las cosas.

Nota: En este segundo condicional , el inglés formal suele emplear were para todas las personas del verbo to be. lf 1 were rich, 1 would move to a different neighbourhood. lf he were here, he would lend me the money.

Si no nos expresamos de manera tan formal el verbo to be se conjuga normalmente excepto en la expresión lf 1were yo u ... que es la fórmula típica para dar consejos. (más teórico, menos real, menos probable que ocurra) Nota Could puede emplearse como pasado de can en la oración subordinada con if. lf you could revise al/ your exercises, you would get better marks.

(pero como llevé los zapatos nuevos, no estuve cómodo) She wouldn't have been upset yesterday if he had told her the truth. (pero como no dijo la verdad, estuvo preocupado)

En lugar de would have, podemos emplear might have o could have con lo que se modifica ligeramente el sentido. J¡lf might have come to the party if she had known about it in time. No hay comillas. La frase suele empezar con un verbo como say, tell, ask, inquire, think, explain, complain, warn, point out, remark, declare, state, announce, protest, claim, etc. que lo llamamos reporting verb.

El tiempo de la narración da una especie de "salto atrás" si el verbo que lo introduce va en pasado. Las preguntas dejan de serlo. El verbo auxiliar ya no va en posición inicial. Las palabras que indican lugar, tiempo, los pronombres , etc. , deben cambiar lógicamente.
Nota: Después de los verbos say, tell y think podemos omitir that. Sin embargo, con verbos como explain, complain, point out, etc., that no se puede omitir.

Las órdenes se suelen expresar en imperativo. Al ponerlas en estilo indirecto: 1
El imperativo pasa a infinitivo manteniendo la forma afirmativa o negativa.

El verbo que introduce el estilo indirecto debe indicar "mandar'', por eso nunca puede usarse say (decir) para introducir una orden indirecta. He said, "Be quiet " + He told us to be qwet.

El verbo tell, que sí significa "mandar'', debe llevar un complemento de persona, a quién se da la orden.

Además de tell se pueden emplear otros verbos con sentido semejante como ask, beg, invite, warn, order, command, instruct, etc.

Indica cierto pesar del que habla por una situación. Podemos utilizar wish para hablar sobre el futuro, el presente o el pasado. La traducción de 1wish solemos hacerla con "Ojalá" que viene del árabe "Dios (Alá) quiera qué ... ". A Cuando queremos expresar que sentimos pesar por una situación presente podemos emplear wish + pasado simple. Se puede usar could en lugar de would. She wishes he could come with her.

Esta construcción que puede resultar muy extraña se entiende mejor si se la compara con otra de sentido idéntico en que se utiliza should. We suggested that the painter (should) paint this room pink. Si omites should, aunque el sujeto sea tercera persona del singular, se pone la raíz del verbo sin s.

La interrogativa y negativa se forman como con cualquier otro verbo. Do yt>u have your car serviced regular/y? Did he have his house redecorated last year? Wi/1 you have your eyes tested next week? l 'm not getting my hair cut today.

Fíjate que have y get empleados como verbos causativos, necesitan el verbo do para interrogar y negar en el presente y el pasado simple.

Debemos mantener el orden have 1 get + objeto + participio pasado, es decir, el objeto entre el verbo causativo y el participio pasado. De lo contrario, cambiaríamos el sentido de la frase. B Get se usa de la misma manera pero es necesario poner to delante de la raíz del verbo. El significado varía algo con respecto a have pues implica cierta persuasión para que alguien haga algo . Para traducir esta idea podemos usar "convencer''. 1got my father to lend me his car last night
Nota Have se traduciría por "emplear'' (al mecánico, a la peluquera, etc.) y get por "convencer'', "conseguir'' que te hagan un pequeño favor.

FROM From suele ir con frecuencia con till/ until/ to para señalar el principio y el final de un periodo de tiempo. The doctor's hours are from nine ti// five. We go to schoo/ from September to June. Nota: Until y till significan exactamente lo mismo.
F DURING During va seguido de un nombre y se refiere a un periodo de tiempo en el que una acción tuvo lugar o continuó. During the summer, many pupils go to summer schoo/s in Eng/and. Los phrasal verbs que son transitivos, es decir, que tienen complemento directo de objeto, pueden ser separables o inseparables. A
Los phrasal verbs separables pueden llevar la partícula junto al verbo o con el complemento intercalado. Cuando el objeto es un nombre, acepta las dos posiciones. We are throwing away our old sota. We are throwing our old sota away. Si es pronombre, éste debe ir necesariamente delante de la partícula. We are throwing it away
B Los phrasal verbs inseparables toman un complemento pero no se puede separar el verbo y su partícula. El objeto tiene que ir detrás de la partícula. She ran into her neighbours after the film. She ran into them after the film.

Si un phrasal verb es separable, el pronombre va delante de la partícula. Si es inseparable, el pronombre va después de la partícula.
