TEKS: A. 10.E
GRADE LEVEL:9
LEARNING TARGET: Factoring quadratic expressions
FLIP COMPONENT URL:
Big Idea: Factoring quadratic expressions through three methods.
Essential Questions: How to factor trinomials of the form y=ax^2+bx+c? What are some techniques to factor trinomials of the form y=ax^2+bx+c? TEKS covered: (Please list relevant TEKS covered in your lesson) 10.(E) factor, if possible, trinomials with real factors in the form ax^2+bx+c, including perfect square trinomials of degree two
Objective/Purpose: (The student expectations must be clearly defined and in line with the district/state standards. For the student’s benefit, explain what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson and why these objectives are important to accomplish (You will) SWBAT factor polynomials with degrees of 2 by grouping or using the wheel method. (We will) Understand the components of ax^2+bx+c and do a couple of examples in the flap foldable. (I will) answer questions on my Find someone who worksheet and my classmates’
Materials/Resources/ Equipment Needed: Flap Foldable Puzzle Activity Video Projector Find Someone Who Worksheet Post-it Notes
Instructional delivery Students will be given the Find Someone Who Activity sheet and each student will write down his/hers name and will passed it around. Students will choose any problem to do it on their own and they should stand up and find 5 classmates to trade information and factor the remaining polynomials. The teacher will walk around with his/her own paper to trade with them as well, giving him/her the opportunity to engage individually with the students. Students will sit back down in groups to compare answers and make changes if necessary, once they finish the class will go over all the problems.
Prior Understanding/Knowledge Transference (ELICIT) Students will be given a foldable which will allow them to follow along the video and identify the differences between numerical coefficients, variables, exponents, and factors.
(ENGAGE) and (EXPLORE): EXPLORE): Students will be separate into groups of 5 students and they will be given a puzzle in order to solve an ax^2 +bx+c equation by dealing with four different factors. This way they remember distributive property and see the connection between factoring.
(EXPLAIN): The explanation will be done through a video based on three different types to factor trinomials of the form ax^2+bx+c, such as Greatest Common Factor, Grouping Method, and the Wheel Method. During the video each method will be well explained with details and examples, while the video is playing the students will practice these methods by filling their foldables.
(ELABORATE): Students will walk around to fill in the “Find Someone Who Worksheet” helping each other to work all the problems. The students answers the first question on the worksheet and then walk around to solve other equations for other people. If possible we will review the “difficult” problems as a class.
(EXTEND): Quickly explain how these factors will help them to find the solutions of the equations and functions once the factors are equaled to zero in order to solve for the x-values.
(EVALUATE): This will be throughout the activity. If they need more help from the partners or just copy down the problem, then we know they need more help with this. Teacher will walk around and will interact with each pair of students to answer doubts and verify students’’ understanding.
Closure: Exit Ticket: Students will be given a post-it note where they will write down their names and at least one new thing that they learned about factoring to post it on the whiteboard before they leave.
