Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games
Photosensitive Seizures A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including ashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games. These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects. Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

We love shooters. Everyone at Epc holds the genre near and dear. We’ve been buldng these games or a decade. A ew years ago, we started eelng lke the genre needed a bt o a change. We love makng ast-paced games lke UNREAL® TOURNAMENT, but we wondered we could slow the pace down whle keepng thngs exctng. “Tactcal” games oten weren’t very accessble, and they crept along at a snal’s pace. To do ths, we’d have to thnk derently about combat. We’d requre players to take cover when they’re beng shot at nstead o runnng headrst nto gunre. We’d have to make somethng that was compellng, a cnematc rollercoaster rde wth larger-than-le characters, monsters, and experences. Gve the users somethng to talk about over lunch, be t the gant creature that chased ther squad or the onlne match they snglehandedly won. Pace the experence properly, and thrll the gamers accordngly. We’d have to thnk careully and creatvely about the player’s opposton. When olks hear about monsters, they usually assume dumb alens that run toward the protagonst’s gun. Why not make a monster that takes cover, bulds weapons, and actually wants to survve? Wouldn’t an ntellgent oe be more threatenng? Ths was the geness o the Locust. We couldn’t be happer that so many gamers and revewers agreed wth us. Over our mllon players have been able to enjoy GEARS OF WAR® on Xbox 360®, and now you can take that same cnematc journey, wth great new gameplay and even hgher resoluton. From Marcus’s cell to the Hollow and beyond, hang onto your seat -- t’s a wld rde. Good luck, and remember to take cover!
-- ClyB Lead Desgner, Epc Games, Inc.
emergenCe Day … anD ater Fourteen years ago, the Locust Horde gathered under every major cty and launched a surprse attack. Once thought ctonal boogeymen, the Horde are rghtenngly real and stronger than anyone had magned. On Emergence Day, untold masses pershed, and countless more ded n the days that ollowed. Rather than allow the Horde to keep the spols o ther aggresson, humans used chemcal weapons and orbtal partcle beams to neutralze them, along wth the ctes and bases they controlled. Wth most urban centers and mltary nstallatons rubble, the human survvors gathered on Jacnto Plateau, whose sold grante strata could not be easly penetrated. When the Horde breached the plateau’s deenses, Marcus Fenx deed orders to save hs ather at East Barrcade Academy ... but he was too late. Marcus was subsequently charged wth derelcton o duty and sentenced to 40 years n Jacnto Maxmum Securty Pententary. Now, the Horde have overrun the pententary.
