Scope This Guidance on Industry Standard (GIS) provides guidance for design, materials, construction, inspection and testing, and documentation of carbon dioxide extinguishment systems.

Normative references The following normative documents contain requirements that, through reference in this text, constitute requirements of this technical practice. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this technical practice are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies.

General a.
Carbon dioxide fire extinguishment (CDFE) systems shall be designed in accordance with local codes and standards. For example in Alaska, carbon dioxide fire extinguishment systems also comply with:

Standards approved by Alaska state fire marshal Alaska administrative code. Design interpretations are performed by first determining how Alaska administrative code, title 13, chapter 50, (13-AAC-50) adopts code. NFPA cannot be directly interpreted without first understanding 13-AAC-50, IBC, and IFC.
The supplier for the CDFE system shall: 1.
Comply the data sheets and procurement documentation.
2.
Comply with this GIS.
3.
Review and be familiar with GP 30-75, GP 30-76, GP 30-85, and GIS 30-851.
c.
Reference shall be made to GP 30-85 to determine requirements related to fire and gas detection and system design.
d.
In case of conflict between this GIS and these codes, standards, and specifications, more stringent requirements shall govern, unless specified otherwise by BP.
System design a.
System shall be designed in accordance with NFPA 12 and GP 24-07.
b.
Carbon dioxide concentration, piping arrangement, and actuation shall be governed by specific hazard and local conditions.
c.
CDFE system shall function with other systems (e.g., alarm, ventilation, equipment shutdown, start-up systems).
Carbon dioxide Concentration a.
Carbon dioxide design concentration shall comply with NFPA 12 and this GIS.
b.
Design to determine extent of protection shall be calculated at average temperature of protected space, typically 21ºC (70°F), but shall take potential extremes into account.
c.
Potential loss of carbon dioxide by leakage shall be taken into account when determining carbon dioxide concentration.
d.
Enclosure integrity procedure as described in NFPA 2001 shall be performed on structures protected with CDFE systems.
e.
Sealing of enclosure shall be adequate to ensure that minimum 10 min hold is achieved for design concentration.
Storage a.
Carbon dioxide shall be stored in one or more carbon dioxide storage containers (CDSC) connected to manifold by flexible hoses and check valves.
b.
CDSC shall comply with:

NFPA 12.
2.
Nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) listing.
Each CDSC shall have permanent nameplate or other permanent marking that: 1.
Identifies contents as carbon dioxide.
2.
Indicates pressurisation level of container.

Indicates nominal carbon dioxide volume.
Size and quantity of CDSC shall be determined by: 1.
Quantity of carbon dioxide required.
2.
Anticipated maintenance methods for system.
e.
Unless CDSC can be gaged and filled in place, maximum capacity shall be 45 kg (100 lb) of carbon dioxide.

In multiple container system, CDSC supplying same manifold outlet for carbon dioxide distribution shall be:

Interchangeable.
2.
Of one select size and charge.
CDSC shall have valve capable of: 1.
Discharging carbon dioxide pneumatically.
2.
Operating from pneumatic control head
h.
If size of system or module space constraints dictate that CDSC must be in separate racks, system shall be operated electrically via nitrogen release panel that is mounted next to rack nearest fire and gas alarm cabinet.
i.
In no case shall more than one electric activation/release mechanism be installed without approval of BP fire and gas technical authority.
j.
CDSC and ancillary equipment shall be assembled on rack: 1.
Capable of providing necessary support.
2.
In accordance with safety regulations.
k.
If installation is onsite, Supplier standard rack may be used.
l.
If installation is in building destined for ocean shipment, marine racks shall be used that: 1.
Are designed to withstand marine loading.
2.
Have two sets of steel tank securing straps per tank.
Distribution a.
Carbon dioxide shall be dispersed uniformly throughout protected area by integrated distribution system consisting of one or more storage tanks connected to piping system by manifold.
b.
Piping system shall supply nozzles designed to discharge carbon dioxide at specified volume and rate.
c.
Final design shall be verified by supplier’s computerised design program and approved by BP.
Instruments and control, electrical, and mechanical a.
Instruments and control systems shall comply with the requirements in GP 30-70.
b.
Electrical equipment shall comply with the requirements in GP 12-45.
c.
Supplier and BP shall review the requirements in GP 60-50 and determine the applicable requirements to be included in the procurement documentation.
d.
Distribution pipe, fittings, and nozzles shall comply with NFPA 12.

Piping and nozzle assemblies shall be restrained to prevent movement during discharge.
Equipment selection Unless dictated otherwise by established practice, equipment that best meets requirements of installation shall be selected.
9.
Safety a.
Warning signs shall be provided in accordance with NFPA 12.
b.
Pre-discharge alarms and warning horns shall be provided in accordance with GP 30-70.
c.
Emergency breathing apparatus shall be provided at or near entrance to protected space.
d.
Special and strict lockout procedures and interlocking designs shall be provided to ensure carbon dioxide discharge cannot take place if personnel are in area.
10. Testing a.
If applicable, mechanical, pipe flow and leakage, electrical, and enclosure integrity tests as required by NFPA 12 shall be conducted to satisfaction of authority that has jurisdiction. In Alaska, such authority would be state fire marshal.
b.
A full system discharge test shall be conducted. Details of the test shall be coordinated with BP to understand the company requirements.
c.
Complete documentation of all tests shall be provided.
d.
In particular, data from enclosure integrity test shall be provided for comparisons to be made at each retest interval.
11. Documentation The following documentation shall be supplied as soon as it becomes available but no later than mechanical completion: a.
Vendor instruction manual.
b.
Operating instructions.
c.
As built drawings.
d.
System maps with “you are here” indication attached to each system panel.
e.
Detailed lists of: 1.
CDSC numbers.
2.
CDSC/hose hydrostatic test dates.
