HABANO 2015
This is the Cuban cigar of the year, as selected by the Havanoscope’s panel.
PANEL’S CHOICE
A mark of distinction for the cigars that particularly impressed us, either by their body or their range of flavors.
THUMBS DOWN
A black mark against certain cigars that are resting on their laurels and that have disappointed us.
PRICES
All prices stated are accurate when the Havanoscope went to print (October 2014). They are subject to price increases during 2015.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY IN EACH COUNTRY
We specify which country each cigar is found in and at what price. If a country is not mentioned, that means the cigar is not officially marketed there. ABBREVIATIONS USED
€ = Euro; £ = Pound sterling; FS = Swiss franc; CUC = convertible peso. Benelux: The prices stated for Benelux apply to Belgium and the Netherlands. For Luxemburg, allow for a 5% surcharge on average. SIZES
In Cuban factories, cigars are divided into 80 categories by their size (diameter, length, and weight). The “vitola de galera” (factory names) differ from the model names commonly used by aficionados. In this edition, we have added them between brackets next to their common name.

THE BIG WINNER H. UPMANN. With no fewer than three cigars chosen as the “Panel’s choice”, this is an exceptional year for H.Upmann. This historic manufacturer has shown that hard work, know-how, and full flavor always pays off. Nothing fancy, nothing bling-bling, no fleeting ranges. In its own inimitable style, H. Upmann has devoted itself to Cuban classicism and is the most reliable of benchmarks.

TRINIDAD. RAMON ALLONES. This brand, which is highly symbolic in Here we have rewarded coherence, the Cuban cigar landscape (the grand enthusiasm, and character. panatella was the legendary cigar With an extremely streamlined range that Fidel Castro offered his (just four cigars), the brand has proved distinguished guests), has fallen from that a small company is perfectly capable grace. alm waters for this classic Cuban house. Most of the items presented maintain their ratings and manage to remain average. All cigars are above the one-ring mark. Yet, there is one loss: the – temporary ? – downfall of the beautiful Coronas Gigantes Churchill. This downgrading causes Bolivar to lose one of its « five rings ». Nevertheless, the Petit Coronas reassures us by climbing passed the average rating. One can only be appreciative of this well established brand, even though the products listed in its catalog are at times somewhat uniform and lacking in aromatic complexity and depth. Bolivar The brand Bolivar was officially launched in 1921. But we have reasons to believe that the label created by Fernández Rocha already existed at the beginning of the 20th century (1901). Its name, a reference to the liberator of Latin America, was chosen for Cuba’s recent emancipation of 1902. Between the two great wars, the brand is steered by Rafael Garcia. It then owns nine properties, among them El Rosario, Violeta Cinetina and La Covadonga. Emblematic of the Cuban terroir, it enjoys a good reputation until 1944. That year, following in the footsteps of La Gloria Cubana, its fate turns with the Cifuentes takeover. Starting in 1960, the cigars will be made in the Partagas factory. The Limited Edition Super Coronas is born in 2014.

The Finos looks
attractive with its dark, oily and nicely taut wrapper. The pre-light experience is promising: damp vegetal notes with a hint of peat. Lights quickly, producing plenty of smoke. Medium strength. Next the Bolivar releases a woody bouquet of flavors, becoming increasingly roasted and resinous. Pepper and dark cocoa work well together but without imparting great complexity. A well-constructed but very predictable habano.

Easy on the eye, this
Bolivar is easy to light too. The first puffs impart grassy notes. The cigar then develops without any real balance or control. Its strength is wavering, producing slight notes of damp peat. The finish is linear. This Tubo N° 1 isn’t bad but it doesn’t have any real strengths. Poor quality/price ratio.
The Tubo N° 2 is a
good-looking, well rolled cigar but it doesn’t entirely deliver on its pre-light flavors. It lights up easily and the first puffs are marked by persistent harshness. The next third is low on strength, bringing a few burnt notes and hints of dry wood, but not enough. The harshness returns for the finale, which is linear and muddled.
The pre-light flavors are
pleasant enough: dry vegetal, spicy, and sweet notes. This Tubo lights easily and doesn’t start off too vigorously despite its narrow shape. It is smooth from the off with well-balanced strength. Resinous (cedar), spicy (black pepper) and roasted (coffee) flavors mingle to form a tempting mix. The taste sensations may not be inspired but they are very pleasant nonetheless. A great little habano.

Pre-light, this very small
Looking very sleek in its
colorado claro wrapper, the Corona Gigante starts out pleasingly delicate. Notes of mushroom with traces of minerals set the pace. This medium-strength habano soon mellows into a lovely easy smoke. The complexity is evident in the second third, where notes of fresh mocha creep in. With its milky aromas and hints of pepper, this cigar positively purrs. But the finish is more muddled. Even with this hitch – which can surely be readjusted– this Churchill is still a subtle, classy smoke.

corona offers up woody fragrances. It starts off strong and lively and the first puffs are woody and spicy. Then, notes of cocoa bean and a few floral touches add to this narrow yet nicely balanced flavor profile. A shame about the unrelenting bitterness. A well-made cigar with good draw, well-paced and very lively.
This cigar for all seasons
is impressive right from the start with mellow smoke imparting flavors of precious wood and crushed hazelnut. Then the earthiness creeps in. That’s when the Petit Corona assumes its true Bolivar character, emanating flavors of tanned leather and wood. A slightly harsh finish, but satisfying overall. Strong but not aggressive. Simplicity and expertise. A consummate achievement. Recommended.

A magnificent robusto,
well designed and assembled with care. A nice smooth opening with caramelized notes and touches of underbrush and spice. The flavors subsequently become deeper and more sophisticated: precious wood complemented by dark cocoa. A full-flavored, well-balanced and very mellow (honeyed fragrances) cigar. This Royal Corona is extremely measured. An excellent after-lunch habano, whatever the season!
boasts a handsome maduro-colorado wrapper. Pre-light, it exudes hints of fresh mushroom. The flavors appear immediately with smooth notes of dried fruit and wood. The progression is well paced and interesting and the strength is under control. Toasted flavors are released, but as the smoke progresses this Bolivar becomes more austere. Touches of dry earth and tangs reminiscent of gunflint appear at the finish. Still young, but a promising cigar. For fans of classical cigars.

ometimes uneven, the luxurious Cohiba label is on a roll this year! It gives us an outstanding performance. The savoring of these costly yet delectable and well-groomed cigars has been delightful. The result? One decline (the Panetelas falls below average) but four progressions. The Esplandidos Churchill earns unanimous praises and secures a fifth crown. A complex range, at times rich, full of flavors with millimeters-thin wrappers. In short, Cohiba definitely lives to its reputation this year. Bravo!

– a term used by torcedores to designate the cigars they used for their own consumption – made by Eduardo Rivera. For almost a year, Rivera single handedly produced the Comandante’s cigars. Fidel Castro shared them with his cabinet members, among them the Che. Ernesto Guevara soon declared that he « had never smoked anything that good ». At the end of 1964, Rivera became the first director of the Torcedores school where his máximo cigars were made. In 1966, the puros, until then known as Fidel’s cigars, were renamed Cohiba by Celia Sánchez, Castro’s consigliere. The word means the tobacco plant in taino dialect. A few months later, the school moved to El Laguito, a mansion Sánchez still occupies in the posh residential neighborhood of Cubanacán. The lounges were turned into galeras. Along with Castro’s favorite long and thin cigars, two more formats were created. In January 1970, the school became a full fledge factory. But Cohiba waited until the end of the decade to be introduced on the market. Its international launch happened in 1982. Six years later, three new vitolas complemented the brand. In 1992, they were followed by the first five Siglos. The superb Siglo VI was introduced on the French market in 2004. In 2007, a new 3-sizes line, Maduro 5, was added. Besides being expensive, all Cohibas have one thing in common: the famous third fermentation of the leaves, which refines the aroma and eliminates nitrous oxides products and tar excesses. In 2010, topping its unequaled prestige, Cohiba surprised the cigar world by launching a trio called Behike BHK . A fourth leaf called Medio Tiempo harvested at the very top, above the ligero, enriches and reinforces the liga. An amazing success story.

A great performance for A handsome,
well-crafted Churchill from Cohiba. The prelight flavors are promising: precious wood with fresh mushroom. Lights ultrasmoothly, very engaging. Then the grassy, spicy and sweet notes kick in. The smoke is thin and aromatic. Then it picks up the pace, seamlessly spilling out notes of fresh peat, mocha and a hint of resin. Mellow and sensual, the Esplendidos is at the top of its game. Treat yourself to this splendidly suave work of art.
an exceptionally attractive short panatella, with its slender body and silky smooth maduro wrapper. A pleasant mouthfeel with notes of black licorice and a hint of red peppercorn. The flavor profile is nicely served by well-balanced strength. Then the Exquisitos becomes smooth and indulgent with the arrival of notes of chocolate and brioche. An excellent little cigar with an impeccable draw and perfect construction. Bravo!
This is a very
well-crafted habano. After pre-light notes of leather and spices comes a languid start. A combination of tanned leather, underbrush and hazelnut best described as «mellow». Subtle to begin with, the Cohiba then becomes more full-bodied. The smoke gets spicier with hints of chocolate and pepper. The flavors remain rounded. Mild flavored but full strength, the Lancero really is a treat for the taste buds.

A nice fat stogie
In terms of aesthetics,
It may bear a prestigious
name, but this habano very definitely lacks care. It is often rolled too tight making for a bad draw. The first few puffs are harsh and bitter. Once this Panetelas finally loosens up, it offers up indulgent flavors of black licorice with the roasted touches characteristic of the brand. Sadly, the final third is flat. Very over-priced for a quality level that is by no means certain! What are they playing at?

wrapped in a soft and smooth maduro wrapper. Pre-light, we get spices and black tea. The draw is initially very loose, which is often the case with this type of cigar. The smoke is abundant and aromatic with notes of walnut husk and a hint of pepper. In the second third this Cohiba becomes more fullbodied, offering up scents of tanned leather and cocoa. The strength is measured throughout a composed and sophisticated final third. Despite its impressive size this is an engaging habano with a likeable personality!
what’s not to like? Perfect proportions, a nice caramel wrapper, and tightly packed. With pre-light notes of spices and dry wood. The first few puffs are lively but smooth. Oodles of smoke with notes of wood and fresh hazelnut. Then red peppercorn, a hint of wet earth and tanned leather further enhance the flavor profile. Progressing gently, the Cohiba becomes richer with a hint of black licorice and pleasing woody aromas. This habano is very well balanced and full flavored to the end. The child 1492 isn’t as healthy as the parent. The brand seems to be under water. None of its cigars rises. On the contrary, it suffers three major drops: the Siglo IV, Siglo V and Siglo VI all lose their fifth ring. This defeat is caused by blends that are both less deep and aromatic. It may be that Linea 1492 has become dangerously complacent and took its past triumphs and high quality for granted. The awakening will be hard.

The Siglo II is not very
appealing with its dark, rather drab and somewhat wrinkled wrapper. The cold draw offers up a few subdued earthy notes. Fortunately, once lit, this cigar knows how to make friends and influence people. The first puffs are full flavored and mellow with toasted hazelnut, a hint of cocoa and woody notes. Then the flavors become even richer spices, black coffee, hints of musk – making a fullbodied smoke. The finish, although not particular complex, is tasty. Very nice to know.
musk and damp vegetal with woody notes. It lights easily and the first puffs are full flavored with a hint of spiciness. A nicely distinctive flavor profile, starting off resinous and spicy, then developing a musky, roasted character. The overall effect is meaty and intense. A slight harshness (bitter touches) prevents the Siglo I from getting a higher rating. A shame since with a few adjustments it would be above average.

A great looking big
robusto. Pre-light notes are woody and earthy. The first puffs are marked by a little harshness, which fades quickly, and the smoke is full flavored and then mellow. Bold notes of cedar and pepper, complimented by leather and walnut. Yet more depth in the second third with hints of honey and cocoa. Then the cigar becomes a little unbalanced, with the strength taking the upper hand. Even with this slight glitch, the Siglo VI is still up there: complex and flavorsome.
The Maduro 5 line already took the Big Winner award last year and is enjoying another lovely season. This subsidiary of Cohiba is rising with a second 5-rings cigar (the Magicos Robusto). If the Robusto catalog is very short, it is nevertheless perfectly coherent and very nicely put together. The cigars we tasted were beautifully crafted and especially aromatic. One can only admire such a well-formulated cigar. A well deserved reputation.

A very aesthetically
pleasing cigar in a maduro wrapper. With pre-light notes of peat, wet earth and cocoa. Then a full and welcoming start. This cigar is rich and indulgent with toasted, mocha and bark flavors. Full-bodied. Hints of peat and hazelnut linger in the mouth and the finish is very satisfying. We want more of this full-bodied, vigorous and full-flavored Cohiba!

A very handsomely
This cigar has a rather
presented robusto: a gleaming, oily maduro wrapper, supple to the touch. Notes of bark on the cold draw. A deliciously deep start. With thick smoke producing notes of peppery underbrush the Cohiba grows ever smoother and stronger. Full flavored and long on the palate. Cedar, red peppercorn and suint make up the flavor profile. The finish is satisfying and intense. A masterful smoke for lovers of full-strength cigars with personality.

unpolished appearance in its dark maduro wrapper. But the prelight draw is appetizing with pleasing notes of leather and pepper and the first puffs are lively and full-bodied, with thick, ultra-spicy smoke. Then, as the strength builds, surges of humus and dark cocoa appear. However, the Secretos becomes excessively strong in the final third, becoming heady and drying the mouth somewhat. A very (too?) virile little cigar, not recommended for those with sensitive palates.
No changes for this opulent Cohiba annex. With the Behike, we are in full luxury mode and the glorious Cuban know-how. We find particularly wellmade, powerful, complex, aromatic cigars designed for hardcore aficionados. The BHK 52 and 54 (awarded the Habano of the year in 2014) keep their five rings. The BHK 56 ‘s quality is slightly inferior. Thanks to this line enjoying a well-established identity, Cohiba continues to demonstrate its creativity.

What’s not to love about
Voted the best habano
The 56 looks imposing
this classy robusto finished with an attractive perilla? You can’t help but admire its smooth and perfect shape and maduro colorado hue with a caramel sheen. The cold draw boasts notes of strong spices and velvety wood. The cigar starts up quickly with great billows of smoke. Then the focus is a full and sophisticated blend of flavors: cedar, wet earth and spices with hints of toast and cocoa. Irresistible. A luxurious, exquisite, and spirited smoke. An exceptional cigar.
in IADC no.7 , the BHK 54 is true to its reputation. The pre-light experience offers powerful fragrances of black licorice and suint. After lighting, the cigar quickly becomes fullbodied yet remains subtle. Woody and mushroom notes cascade out. Soon the cigar becomes stronger, with notes of humus, bark and cocoa adding to the complexity. Still very well balanced, this Cohiba has great depth. The finish is exacting and requires a certain «smoking expertise». The BHK 54 is a high level smoke; perfectly balanced with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. What consummate skill! A shining example of craftsmanship.
and the opening is nice and smooth. The smoke evokes fragrances of precious wood. Then a more organic flavor profile emerges: green peppercorn, damp vegetal and toast. Tastes linger impressively and flavor intensity ramps up, though still mellow. This habano is immediately satisfying. A little lacking in aromatic complexity in the final third but a great piece nonetheless. A top notch cigar.

CUABA
CUABA
E
ntirely dedicated to figurados, this line has both good and not so good properties: a Diademas with a five-rings grade and a rising Generosos. Nevertheless, the Exclusivos (suffering from a decline) are losing steam, like the Tradicionales . In the end, the Cuaba brand seems to be floating. Their cigars are nondescript and lack personality. The label’s bet is far from being won. It will need to be more assertive to distinguish itself. Cuaba Borrowed from the taino dialect, the name Cuaba designates a kind of wood reputed for its draw. Launched in England in 1996, the label is the product of a bet made by the management team of Habanos S.A, who wanted to reinvent the figurados, particularly popular in England in the 19th century. The technique used to roll these cigars was very particular. To teach it, Habanos hired the famous Romeo y Julieta torcedor Juan Carlos Izquierdo González. Two imposing formats, the Salomon and the Diademas were created in 2002 to help revive a brand so particular that it has a hard time finding success. The Piramides, Limited Edition 2008 followed them.

This giant Cuaba is
impressive to look at. The cold draw offers notes of black tea with a few citrus touches. The first puffs may seem insubstantial. The flavor profile is carefully built around vegetal and spicy notes, moving on to tanned leather. The strength builds and the scent of mushrooms and sweet flavors creep in. After an excellent progression, this largest of the Cuebas finishes with a woody, roasted flavor profile. A pleasantly persistent aftertaste, full and rich. What more can you ask?
The overall look is
appealing: the golden wrapper is thin but firm to the touch. Pre-light, we get a hint of cocoa. A smooth start and very soon some classy flavors (fresh hazelnut, precious wood, cocoa bean). The next third is very pleasant, with indulgent notes of precious wood, wet earth and dry vegetal. Sadly the strength ceases to enhance the flavor profile and the finish is slightly astringent and difficult. Too bad! Not a very fashionable habano but worth a try.

A pleasant-looking little
Figurado, despite its somewhat dull wrapper and rough feel. Rather light on the cold draw but nicely woody. A straightforward start with attractive notes of precious wood, though sadly soon tinged with bitterness. Despite the arrival of touches of tanned leather and roasted coffee, overall it’s a thin smoke and a little harsh on the finish. Not a lot going on with this habano, and the blend will certainly need some work.
The Exclusivos is visually pleasing: a nicely rolled colorado wrapper, smooth to the touch and well filled. The cold draw features sawdust. Lights quickly, dry but pleasant. The flavors dabble with precious wood, bark and red peppercorn. Progression is minimal. The cigar lacks smoothness, depth of flavor and complexity. The result is a somber and bland finish. Too austere and too hollow, this Cueba needs a makeover.
Figurado (generosos)
in smooth, nicely taut maduro wrapper, offers pre-light touches of wet hay and spice. The draw may seem hard at first due to it sometimes being rolled too tight. But once it breaks free, this habano produces lovely, resinous, earthy flavors then evolving into a more roasted flavor profile (coffee, toasted hazelnut) but still with underlying earthy notes. Without being spectacular, our Generosos is a real gogetter. One to watch.

After an enterprising
start with a perfect draw, this cigar offers up woody and spicy notes. Full strength but not overwhelming. The second third is more sophisticated and gives out very elegant grassy flavors and aromas of peat and pepper. Then increasingly earthy, after a few toasted notes, the cigar delivers a grandstand finish. A genial cigar that just lacks a little creativity in the final third.
20 The International Amateur de Cigare
The sheer size of the
Salomon is impressive. A good pre-light experience: underbrush, spices, humus and peat. The first few puffs are smooth and rounded. Flowing serenely, unhurriedly, the mellow aromatic smoke is very rich. Precious wood, red peppercorn, toast and dark cocoa are the key notes in the symphony. Though a little linear, this Cuaba is nonetheless a choice cigar, unfaltering and full of flavor.
This short figurado, well
filled inside its colorado wrapper, has light grassy notes on the cold draw. No great depth at the start (its construction doesn’t really encourage one to take great big puffs from the outset), later it develops notes of tanned leather and precious wood. The smoke is mild and light. The strength is well channeled, creating a woody atmosphere accented with peppery hints. A satisfying and balanced smoke, but too simplistic. A touch more passion please!

his brand manages to survive with a very small catalog. A child of the Montecristo house, it hasn’t changed much. The N° 2 obus (« coup de cœur » 2014) is still well received even though it seems stuck in an average range. We don’t see how Diplomaticos could rival the other Cuban labels. Its only merit is to exist. Diplomaticos The label was created in 1966 as a replica of the Montecrito brand. First produced for the French market, it started with five formats identical to the Montecristos N° 1 to N° 5. Ten years later, 6s and 7s which production was soon stopped followed them. Today, only the N° 2 survives. Diplomaticos are rather sleepy.

This attractive cigar,
with its veined, rustic wrapper starts with grassy notes. The smoke arrives quickly thanks to a good draw. Already medium-strength, the first third is quite intense. The progress is measured. The flavor profile is more and more woody, with notes of black pepper, and a little peat and warm coffee. Despite real dynamism, overall it is monotonous although not lacking in roundness. The finish is spicy, robust, and a tad invasive. A good smoke – a real tryer.

o major changes for this old brand. The three cigars presented – their number have shrunk noticeably lately – main average. With its wooded, nicely aromatic, easy to smoke cigars, El Rey del Mundo keeps its position. No surprise there. Last year, we were already mentioning the stalling, which could turn out to be lethal. The brand should be more dynamic and show more conviction. It still enjoys a good reputation. It would be a pity to let it fade. El Rey del Mundo The brand is rumored to have been created in 1848 by Emilio Ohmstedt, a German merchant who also started the Sancho Panza label. In 1882, it became the property of Antonio Allones – Ramón’s brother. Ambitious and megalomaniac, he wished to be renowned both for the quality and the high prices of his products. He also wanted his label to become « the king of the world ». He dreamed of traveling the five continents carried by animals as varied as an elephant, a camel, a ram, a donkey and a horse wearing multicolor feathers. A token of his power, the vista will accompany the brand’s meteoric rise. After having taken part in the protests against the American invasion of 1905, Antonio Allones ceded the label to the Diaz brothers, who sold it in 1918 to an… American company. El Rey del Mundo Cigar Company also owned Rafael Gonzalez and Sancho Panza. The brand’s popularity and prestige will remain high until the late 70s. In spite of a rather minimalist catalog, El Rey del Mundo remains one of the great names among Cuban Cigars.

A mini panatella with a
simple square body and rather dull colorado maduro wrapper. The first puffs release a subtle set of toasted and hazelnut flavors. Medium strength, a little restrained, despite a very loose draw. This habano has an uneven burn and lacks structure. Despite some woody fragrances, the strength wavers and overall it’s rather monotonous. The blend could do with an upgrade to give this Demi-Tasse a bit of character.
FONSECA
FONSECA
T
his unassuming Cuban brand is not in top shape. Fonseca finds it hard to shine when it comes to aroma and flavor. Too often, the cigars offered are timid. Most of the catalog habanos are below average – the lonsdale N° 1 loses two rings this year. The Fonsecas are nevertheless very well rolled, and generally have smooth and neat wrappers. Their prices stay low, a real asset, as budgets are increasingly tight Fonseca Founded in 1891 by Francisco Fonseca, the brand was first produced by a small Havana factory. Poet Federico García Lorca celebrated it: « I will go to Santiago with the blond head of a Fonseca… » Francisco Fonseca is responsible for wrapping the cigar in a very thin Japan leaf and presenting it in individual tubes. He also came up with the idea of creating a tasting room in his factory. Thus his customers got to taste different blends chosen for them. The brand specialized in the production of cigars for banquets, parties, clubs, etc. Today, four formats are available under the Fonseca brand.

On removing the silky
paper cover, we reveal a thin, drab maduro wrapper but a well filled body. The cold draw serves up leather and spice. Lights briskly and the first puffs are on the rough side with rather overpowering smoke. The initial emphasis is vegetal, then shifting to a woodier accent but without depth of flavor. The structure leaves much to be desired at times. Not a lot of clout or appeal in this Fonseca. Post-coffee only.

appealing (rough-veined, darkish wrapper with a hard feel), this small corona doesn’t thrill the palate either. wrapped in thin filmy paper seems to suffer from inconsistent production – the draw on some of those tested was too firm. The start is pleasant, quick and lively. Flavors of earth and wood mingle. This habano then becomes increasingly earthy and peaty. Medium strength, but well balanced. Not ostentatious, very simplistic, not very complex, but far from unpleasant.
notes of sawdust and earth. A tentative and very measured start. Notes of cork and dried fruit appear but don’t really mark the palate. Gradually a woodier character is established (cedar). The strength is very subdued and the smoke could be thicker. Attractive hints of hazelnut creep in but progression is poor. In the final third the strength falters, leading to excessive bitterness and a muddled finish.
H.UPMANN
H. UPMANN
A
new wind blows on the venerable H. Upmann house. If almost all cigars of the catalog were able to maintain their grades, pleasant surprises are also increasingly common. Thus we salute the Connoisseur N° 1 and the Magnum 50, as magnificent as the Magnum 46 and the Upmann N° 2, which now both belong to the fiverings club! Six of the vitolas were given the best grade. A no-fault trajectory for this very classic label which received three « coups de cœur ». Instead of living quietly off its reputation, the brand cultivates both its wealth and personality. H. Upmann The adventure started in Brême, Germany, where August and Hermann Upmann (or Hupmann) were born and raised. The brothers left for Cuba in 1843 and opened a factory one year later in a low-rent locale Calle San Miguel in Havana. By 1981, they had acquired major interests in banking. Their newfound wealth allowed them to move to a new building calle Carlos III, one of the capital’s busiest streets. Two hundred employees worked there. The family managed the brand and the company until 1924. That year, the Upmanns were forced to relinquish the control to a British firm, Frankau S.A. In 1937, the Menéndez y García brothers acquired H. Upmann. They reorganized the factory and started producing their recently launched Montecristo brand there. In 1944, they proceeded to build the Amistad building where the brand stayed until 2003. That year, it moved to the Velado neighborhood, in a renovated building once occupied by the Partagas cigarettes factory. Construction forced the brand to move again, this time Calle Belascoaín, in a charming if old warehouse that used to house Romeo y Julieta. There is a new limited series: the Upmann N° 2 Reserva.

Very firm to the touch, What a looker! A sporty,
box-pressed cigar enveloped in a delicately veined maduro wrapper. Appetizing pre-light flavors: damp vegetal, brioche/sweet, fresh spices. A full-bodied and steady start. Initial woody/spicy notes make way for a roasted, resinous character. This habano is both sensual with a hint of exoticism. With musky notes on the finish (suint, barnyard), this is a smooth, complex and very well balanced smoke that retains a kind of delicate creaminess up to the very last moment. A true masterpiece.
the sign of a tight fill. The first puffs reveal floral and woody flavors. Strong and lively, sadly its progression is extremely linear. The strength builds, with notes of black pepper appearing, but it soon becomes a little bitter and muddled, all because it’s rolled too tightly and the liga is lacking in coherence. Not much to like overall. Hard work.

neat and well rolled in its chocolate wrapper, and perfectly filled. This cigar comes bursting out of the starting blocks, with woody and spicy notes exploding in the mouth. Full-bodied and full strength. Then the flavors (wood, black pepper, dried fruit) become less rounded. The strength becomes a little too overwhelming, spoiling the last few puffs. A shame because this H. Upmann could certainly be a cut above.

rather imposing. The pre-light flavors are appetizing with lovely notes of wood, spice, and cocoa. The start also lives up to expectations: the first puffs are full flavored and very pleasant. The woody flavor profile is delicate, enlivened by touches of pepper, soon joined by hints of underbrush, cocoa bean and fresh peat. A fine, balanced, and sensual smoke: a real delight. The final third is more full-bodied. Exceptional aftertaste persistence with notes of coffee, oak bark and a touch of tanned leather. What a winner! Unmissable.

Notes of cedar, wet earth and pepper spill out in smooth succession. Full strength but very balanced overall. The tempo is perfectly controlled with smooth cocoa arriving to complement toast and white pepper. This majestic Sir Winston is suave, dynamic and bewitching. One of the best habanos around.
Aesthetically faultless.
The pre-light draw offers promising notes of leather and spices. A fullbodied and rich start. Abundant smoke imparts flavors of precious wood, black pepper and cocoa. his beacon of a brand was in a relatively good shape last season. It is not at the top of its game this year, in spite of the new, innovative Hoyo de San Juan. Only the Epicure N°1 seems to be strong while other items (the Churchills and the Double Coronas) lose steam. The label still enjoys its aura but doesn’t have a five-rings cigar. In short, disappointing results for Hoyo. It will have to show more enthusiasm and aromatic richness to stay in the race.

more than one hundred years of history. At the origin of the brand is an unrelenting, fiercely ambitious, autocratic Catalan. José Gener is thirteen years old when he emigrates to Cuba. He is thirty-three in 1851 when he partners with his uncle to start his own factory and create his new brand La Escepción (thus spelled by its owners when they patent it), soon a resounding success. Gener then buys a famous vega, Hoyo de Monterrey, in the municipality of San Juan y Martínez – the gate is still there. In 1867, he parts way with his uncle to start a company bearing his name, with his brothers. Together, they launch Hoyo de Monterrey. The brand has a particularity: the coat of arms of its customers sometimes appear on the rings. Three years go by before the tyranical Gener decides to fly solo at the helm of José Gener y Batet. His brothers are demoted to the rank of simple employees. José will remain the sole director for the next 30 years and will commercialize Hoyo de Monterrey, José Gener and La Escepción in the US. When he dies i n 1900, the Hoyo de Monterrey factory is the largest in Cuba, employing 350 people and producing more than fifty millions cigars per year. His widow, then his daughter, take over before the company is sold to Ramón Fernández and Fernando Palacio, who already own Punch and Belinda. In the 40s, the Hoyo de Monterrey brand will elaborate the famous cigars with Bordeaux vineyards names (Margaux, Lafite, Latour, Haut-Brion and Yquem) for Zino Davidoff. The Châteaux Hoyo de Monterrey series will adopt the Davidoff name in 1967. Presented this year in Cuba, the last born of this great Cuban label, the Hoyo de San Juan, is made of filler leaves grown in the macro-terroir of San Juan, in the Vuelta Abajo region.

natural colorado maduro wrapper, on the cold draw this habano gives us cedar, leather and a little pepper. An excellent start: lots of smoke with notes of precious wood, spices and fresh walnut. Then comes a more pronounced dry wood flavor profile. Medium strength, but no explosion of flavors. A very harmonious smoke nonetheless with no overheating issues. The strength is balanced, this is an easy-going smoke with no surprises. Could do with having more character.

A popular classic
robusto. Some enticing pre-light notes – dry wood, suint and cocoa – then a bold, smooth start. Lovely woody notes dominate. The smoke is fine and quite light, and then the Hoyo takes on a more vegetal character with hints of fresh walnut. The second third is hollower with occasional bitter touches. The flavors are there but overall it lacks depth. The strength picks up gradually, with burnt aromas, before an over vigorous finish. A somewhat lackluster habano but easy to smoke, very accessible and never disconcerting.
This huge cigar is quite
simply stunning: an immense white, red and gold band, embossed with the cigar's name, around a perfectly smooth Colorado maduro wrapper. No disappointments prelighting: pronounced notes of spices and precious wood. The Hoyo lays its cards on the table straight away: it is straightforward and full-bodied, with notes of red and black pepper and precious wood. The perfect draw, facilitates an appreciable increase in body. Latent strength but somewhat muted; dynamic but fortunately never obsessive or aggressive. This is a masculine and somewhat wild piece, clearly aimed at those who like cigars with character. Gamey, deep, dense and intense, the Grand Epicure is not for fans of subtle and delicate cigars.

great many tabaqueros, the Piedr a family was established in the village of Remedios, in the Vuelta Arriba region. The José L. Piedra brand (the name comes from its founder José Lamadrid Piedra) was registered in 1880. At the end of the 19th century, it was the most famous outside of La Havana. José Lamadrid Piedra’s nephew, José Lamadrid Piedra II, managed the brand until his death in 1942. « The satisfaction Piedra gives you » was a popular slogan at the time. In the 50s, driven by José Lamadrid Piedra III, the label became a favorite in the US, its main market. The embargo put an end to the love story. The brand died off. It was rescucitated in 1996 thanks to a wildly successful new concept: the cigars were sold in bundles. The tobacco came from the Remedios region. Made of a short filler, the cigars are entirely hand rolled. The last born, the Petit Cazadores, was released in France in 2007. That year, new colorful rings appeared on the label.

panatella leaves much to be desired (wrinkled wrapper, very veiny and a rough feel). But the pre-light sensations are something else! Delicious musky, sweet and earthy notes. The opening is bold but smooth, the smoke imparting flavors of cedar and pepper. A touch rustic, but appetizing. The Cremas is creamy and fullbodied. Light strength and complexity but full flavored and well paced. This Piedra outshines its modest reputation.
This corona comes dressed in a strongly veined maduro wrapper and pre-light it offers very light grassy notes. The draw is difficult to start with and it burns unevenly. The whole flavor profile is limited to burnt wood and earth flavors followed by a little spice in the second third. On some of these cigars the draw stays firm. Despite a few hints of fresh hazelnut, the smoke then becomes astringent. Too crude and inconsistent.

The smoking experience is very linear, lacking depth and complexity. A well-built cigar nonetheless, balanced and likeable. Hats off to this Petit Cazadores. Heartwarming, unpretentious and affordable.

Cetros offers up light
grassy touches. The start is uncompromising. Full strength with aromas of burnt wood and a hint of bitterness. A well-rolled cigar with an easy draw. A narrow range of flavors establishes itself, based around pepper and woody notes. A very well-structured cigar whose strength is its dominant feature. A shame the taste is marred by too much bitterness around the halfway mark.

lthough this brand suffered quite a bit over the last few years (cigars discontinued, unpredictable manufacturing), it seems to be stabilizing and regaining some colour. The short catalog presents average, aromatic and often refined items. The corona gorda Seleccion N° 1 distinguishes itself by winning a fourth ring. Juan Lopez is no longer a prestigious brand in Cuba. At times, it can reveal itself rich and precise as far as its aroma and deserves to be closely watched. Juan Lopez The brand’s real name is La Flor de Juan Lopez and it was founded in 1876 by López Diaz. At the time of his death in 1900, the company was acquired by Cosme del Peso y Cía, a small independant company. Juan Lopez remained an important label until the 70s which marked the beginning of its slow and steady decline. In the 90s, two new formats, the Seleccion N° 1 and N° 2 tried to boost its notoriety. The Corona factory currently manufactures the cigars. The production remains low. A French edition, the Minutos, was created last year.

With its veiny wrapper,
this is not a very stylish Juan Lopez. Easy to light, its flavor profile is woody to start with before becoming more earthy and toasted. Nice touches of dried fruit. The strength builds but is always under control and never aggressive. A lovely, soothing melody, with hints of musk and roasted notes in the finale. Not complex or full flavored, but reliable.

A handsome corona
gorda with a well-crafted look. In the cold draw there is wood, suint and spices. Starts out deep and spicy. The cigar exudes flavors of exotic wood and then gets smoother and more indulgent, adding in notes of cocoa, earth and touches of pepper. The final third is a tad linear, though just as fullflavored and creamy. The strength brings the best out of the flavors in this Seleccion N° 1. Nice work. Highly recommended.

A smooth and delicately veined colorado wrapper. The body is well filled and supple to the touch. Pre-light, the Seleccion N° 2 offers sweet and spicy notes. The first puffs are fullbodied and pleasant. Woody flavors mingle with vegetal, spicy and resinous notes. Likeable, but lacking in depth. Medium strength. Only at the end does this cigar surprise us with a character that’s both roasted (coffee) and earthy (peat). Coherent and nicely constructed but we expect more and better from this handsome Juan Lopez.

o changes for this brand with only two short filler formats, the Petit Coronas and the Selectos which maintain their average grades. The production remains stable season after season, seamingly enduring, immune to time and trends. La Flor de Cano has a round smoke. Its aroma is decent. All in all, it is an unpretentious label sold at reasonable prices. La Flor de Cano Not much is known about this brand created in 1884 by brothers José and Tomás Cano. The factory was then established at 66 Rayo Street in Havana. La Flor de Cano seems to have always been a modest family affair. Today manufactured in La Corona factory, it has only two cigars which used to be machine rolled and are now hand rolled.

Nicely accessible – for
both palate and wallet – the Selectos offers woody notes from the very first puffs, along with a few touches of tanned leather. Not a great deal of body and virtually no progression despite a good draw and burn. A touch of acidity on the finish, no surprises but not unpleasant. Mild and relatively flat, this Flor de Cano is a middle range cigar.
LA GLORIA CUBANA
T
his label has known better days even if the very short catalog offers quality items such as the Tainos, winner of a « coup de cœur » this year. The cigars are very coherent: the aromatic, wooded and creamy range is easily recognizable. As seasons go by, La Gloria Cubana plays a refined, precise and present tune with rare, charming and esthetically well arranged, elegant products. It’s a shame that amongst this nice chamber orchestra, the Médaille d’Or N° 2 falls to a barely passable grade. La Gloria Cubana Founded in 1885 by a Englishman, Christian Enhler, this brand has enjoyed luxury and prosperity: an allegory sits on a throne floating on clouds behind which blinding sunrays shine. She holds the peace scepter in one hand and the shield of intelligence in the other. Six medals (the ones the brand won at international exhibits) appear at the bottom of the label. It is guarded by the Agriculture and Industry ministries. Acquired in 1905 by the entrepreneurial José Fernández Rocha, the Bolivar brand founder, La Gloria Cubana achieved glory under his management. Helped by his brother and partner Francisco, Rocha surrounded himself with two experts: Robert Middlemans and Rafael García Robaina. The latter will be responsible for buying the leaves until his death in 1935. After José’s death in 1944, the Rocha heirs will be incapable of maintaining the dynamism and the developement of the brands. In 1954, La Gloria Cubana’s operations – like its alter ego Bolivar –will be transferred to Cifuentes, which already controls Partagas. Swept by the 60s wave of nationalizations, the label will resuscitate in the 70s. Amputated of two cigars in 2011 (the Médaille d’Or N° 1 and N° 3), La Gloria’s catalog has become almost confidential.

This exceptional habano
comes in a chocolate wrapper finished with the famed perilla. Nice and soft to the touch, the pre-light notes are peat and humus. A pleasingly delicate opening: refined smoke with woody and earthy notes. Then the Especial becomes distinctly peppery, gaining in strength and richness of flavor. The final third (dark cocoa, dried fruit, strong peat) is spirited, very dark and even austere on the last puffs. A beautiful habano and a special moment.

This Montecristo, with
its thin, oily, dark maduro wrapper, offers pre-light notes of wood, leather and black tea. A nice smooth start with softwood and mocha flavors. Then the smoke becomes rounded but slightly spicy. Excellent draw and burn. As the strength increases the flavors become more virile (wet earth, leather, toasted hazelnut, spices). A warm and dynamic smoke. This Cuban is very good company.
This latest addition to
the Edmundo family is exceptionally attractive. The pre-light experience is promising: damp vegetal with a hint of musk. After a calm start, the cigar opens up smoothly with a touch of spice. Then it gets creamy, milky even, fusing woody, earthy notes with fresh hazelnut. The flavors become a little more roasted, and sadly there is less complexity in the final third. The finish ends up muddled and the cigar loses its mellowness and grandeur. One to watch.

venerable habano is timeless: impressively sized without being hulky, a colorado wrapper with a coppery sheen, soft to the touch. Pre-light notes of tanned leather and earth dust. A somewhat rustic and
modest appearance with its dry maduro wrapper and short, stocky body. Nice and easy to light, the first puffs are slightly vegetal and then fast become earthy and woody. Toasted (hazelnut) and primarily roasted (coffee) notes complete the flavor profile. Medium strength overall and very well balanced and well paced. The final third is rich and loaded with toasted flavors. Well worth a try!
Short and stocky, this
cigar is perfectly filled and offers up a woody, spicy bouquet on the cold draw. Right from the start this habano produces lovely notes of precious wood, mushroom and pepper. Nice complexity of flavor and perfect pace. Then the spices become more pronounced, this smoke is harmonious and mild, although the final third and finish are rather less melodic. This is a fullstrength and satisfying Montecristo with a fiery personality. So much energy in such a small cigar!
This cigar looks rather
well crafted. A brisk and dynamic start. The flavor profile is essentially organic: precious wood joins fresh hazelnut and then roasted coffee enters the stage. Very up-front overall and not especially smooth. The Montecristo lacks control and finesse but its spontaneity is a pleasant surprise.

wrapper is dull but smooth and nicely taut. After a few hints of underbrush and fern on the cold draw, the Regata provides a light smoke with grassy and subtle leather notes and just a touch of spice. The smoke starts out a little dry, but gradually becomes more woody and spicy. The flavors get more complex but you could never really describe them as sophisticated. At the end, the Regata’s unbridled strength makes for a somewhat arid finish and short-lived aftertaste. This attractive Montecristo Open lacks taste appeal.
looks unimposing and uneven (a production fault maybe?). The inconsistent draw is disappointing as the cigar sometimes has difficulty expressing itself. This is a shame because when the draw is good there are very pleasant woody notes and stylish touches of roasted coffee. Improved quality control and more measured strength are required for this Junior to fully express its complexity and depth.

short on charisma. Evenly filled and soft to the touch. The start is brisk – with white pepper and gamey flavors – then gets a little dry. The second third picks up again with appetizing flavors of freshly baked brioche, becoming smooth and almost mellow. Conversely, the final third is very unbalanced with the strength masking its flavors. The last puffs are too strong. The blend is muddled and needs some work.

reat stability for the venerable Partagas House. Most of its –numerousvalues remain stable even though it suffered a big and unexpected blow: the immutable Churchill Lusitanias, celebrated for ages in the Amateur de Cigare and the Havanoscope lost his 5th ring this season. As for the other cigars, the ups and downs cancel each other. It’s worth noticing the lonsdale 8-9-8’s excellent performance: it was unanimously voted the Havana of the year 2015. Partagas continues to play the classic yet slightly macho card. 100% Cuban character.

Partagas It is the most famous Havana factory, the most visited by tourists and one of the most prestigious. The label was created in 1845 by a clever and tyranical Catalan by the name of Jaime Partagás, who established himself in the Cuban capital in 1827. Partagás soon owned several plantations in the Pinar del Río area. Mindful of the aficionados’ needs, he succeeded in taking his cigars to the very top of the chain. He selected the tabaccos himself and experimented with several fermentation methods. Rumor has it that he was the first one to hire a reader in his factory galera in 1860. In 1859, the brand was universally recognized. Thus the quote engraved on the front of the factory building on Industry Street, « Real Fábrica de Tabacos » (Royal Tabaccos factory), does not lie. It is simply the oldest factory in Cuba. Jaime Partagás was murdered in 1868. The crime was never solved. Jaime’s son José took over. Lacking his father’s energy and flair, he was incapable of keeping the Partagas ship afloat. He filed for bankrupcy a few years later. The brand was acquired by José A. Bances. In 1900, Bances retired and ceded the brand to two dynamic scions of some of the biggest cigar dynasties: Ramón Cifuentes Llano and José Fernández López. The partnership was soon denounced and replaced by Cifuentes and Co. The Fidel Castro takeover sent the Cifuentes great-grandson to the United States. N 1995, Habanos S.A. celebrated its 150th anniversary. A Limited Edition was created in 2010: the Partagas Serie D Especial. In 2011, a new series christened E, was born with a big Robusto, the N° 5, as a first format. This year, it is the Serie D N°6 ’s turn to be launched along with the Seleccion Privada, which earmed a heart.
A superb Lonsdale, the
flagship of the Partagas brand. Elegant and distinguished, it offers up a few hints of mocha and cedar on the cold draw. The first impression is one of depth, with notes of coffee, humus, and pepper. Highly sophisticated, this cigar develops its dynamic side without compromising on taste. Notes of suint, wet earth, grilled tones and mocha create a sublime blend of flavors. Not content with being wonderfully complex, the 8-9-8 exudes a powerful smoothness, and persuasive taste. Hats off to a great habano.

gives off a slightly grassy pre-light flavor. The first puffs are smooth and easy. The aromas gradually center on dusty notes, leather, light pepper and bark. The smoke comes out smooth and silky, with growing intensity as you smoke through the stick. Its aromatic complexity suffers from this ruggedness, giving you a linear smoke overall. (culebra) is composed of three different intertwined cigars that should be smoked individually. The Culebras is a curiosity, a torcedor ’s feat, and a marker in the history of the Cuban cigar. Its mythical status is not undeserved either: after a vigorous, full-bodied start featuring strong, woody notes the strength builds to a crescendo, exhaling chocolaty flavors. The Culebras is then harmonious, until the roasted finish. A full-bodied and enjoyable smoke.

Nice touches of humus

unassuming and it takes a while to really get going. The first few pulls are mild, giving off wet vegetal and earthy notes. The last third lacks aromatic appeal and magnitude. Been there, done that… Must do better.
From the moment you

t is not easy to survive on such a thin catalog and outmoded image, away from the splash made by more media saavy brands. Nevertheless, Por Larrañaga doesn’t fare that poorly. The thin Montecarlos will bring back the most delicate palate to life and the Petit Coronas earns an average grade this year. We can only recommend this old-fashioned brand, which miraculously managed to survive. It contributes to the Cuban cigar diversity by unleashing an irresistible and rare Havana aroma. Por Larrañaga The brand was launched in 1834 by Ignacio Larrañaga, a Spaniard from Guipúzcoa. He first settled on calle O’Reilly before moving to calle San Miguel. Antonio Rivero Martínez acquired the brand in 1875. The factory was the first one to use machines yet it enjoyed a stellar reputation. The skills of its torcedores were such that it was soon called « the habano university ». The Lanceros de Cohiba creator, Eduardo Rivera, worked as a roller there before 1959. So did those who helped him develop the torcedores school which was soon to become El Laguito manufacture. « There is peace in a Larranaga, there is calm in a Henry Clay» declared Rudyard Kipling in The Bethroted. Henry Clays have disappeared. There are three Por Larrañaga left. They are produced in La Corona factory.

ast year, this very classic brand inherited a feared trophy: the Big Loser. There is no restart in sight this season. The progress is simply too timid. Most of the catalog items keep the same grades, below their potential. A bad news: the emblematic Churchill disappears. The label lacks ambition. Punch is thus under surveillance. Punch It is believed that a German fellow named Stockmann in 1840 registered the Punch brand. Its name could be the name of a famous British puppet visible on the label vistas. In any case, Manuel López Fernández (from the Juan Valle company) became the brand owner in 1884. He proceeded to guide the cigar to the modern era by ditching every reference to luxury, terroir and manufacture and designing a product which flavor and commercial appeal were adapted to the audience to which it was destined: the British connoisseur. The brand reached its peak between 1898 and 1922, thanks to Stockmann’s creativity and dedication. In 1930, Punch joined the Fernández-Palacio group. Until the revolution, its cigars were produced at the Rayo Street factory along the Belindas, La Escepción and Hoyos de Monterrey. A Limited Edition, the Punch Serie d’Oro N °2, was launched last year.

This cigar’s rustic
appearance goes well with the old cedar notes in the pre-light draw. After lighting, the smoke gives off woody and wet earth tones. This Punch maintains a narrow flavor profile through the first two thirds before livening up. Get ready for a full strength finish that leaves a satisfying, almost brutal aftertaste. A limited range of flavors and a rousing, intense finish: the archetypical “hunting cigar”.

A handsome but soberlooking Punch, which offers up notes of wood, spices, vegetal in the cold draw. East to light and mild. This balanced, fullstrength Serie d’Oro immediately produces very creamy woody flavors. As the cigar progresses, its strong personality is confirmed, and it becomes deep and spicy (pepper), exhaling gamey notes. The final third is a little samey but balanced and virile overall up to the finish. A punchy Punch!

ad news for the aficionados: the production of the Imperiales, beacons of the brand, was canceled. Now the catalog only offers the Coronas Claro and two regional France Editions. Three healthy, balanced, delicate and aromatic cigars benefiting from a good price/quality ratio. Will that be enough to slow down the decline of a brand suffering from a chronic image deficit? Try them, you won’t be disappointed. And enjoy the few Imperiales left still available in smoke shops. The only French-Cuban brand is always worth it. Quai d’Orsay The Seita created the Quai d’Orsay cigars in 1973 for the French market. Thus their name evoking the company ’s old address. The suave liga and its usually light wrapper make it a precursor of the modern habano. Yet it isn’t enough to free this elegant label from the tiny niche it seems to be confined in. A very small production could signify the pure and simple disappearance of the brand. This year, a third vitola, the Imperiales, was discontinued. On the other hand, the Éditions régionales France enjoys a well-deserved success.

The Belicoso Royal is
very well filled and the cold draw reveals just a hint of sawdust. Smooth and pleasant right off the bat, you detect precious woods and licorice, then coffee tones. An essentially woody (cedar) flavor profile, happily accented by peppery notes. An easy, even, medium-strength cigar that has just enough charm to provide an enjoyable smoke.
This good-looking
Coronas has a pre-light
flavor featuring faint grassy notes. It lights up nice and easily. Smooth from the outset, this cigar gives off fresh walnut and subtle vanilla aromas with roasted and vegetal overtones. The strength builds gradually at a perfect pace. Notes of cedar and leather show up in the final third. This Quai d’Orsay serves up a serene smoke for quiet enjoyment. Excellent value for money.

ovely season for Quintero. The brand produces modest, cheap yet well balanced and made items. The rather small catalog is progressing. Let’s salute the petit corona Londres Extra and petit panatella Panetelas’s progress. They win a ring. You won’t find complex, deep or unforgettable habanos in the Quintero House but it would be unfair to ignore this rustic and sympathetic Cuban label. Quintero This brand adventure started in 1924 in Cienfuegos, one of Cuba’s main harbors, when Agustín Quintero opened a traditional factory (chinchal) with his brother. It became successful in 1940 under the name Quintero y Hermano. The principal market was Spain. Machine made in the 80s, these short habanos are now hand rolled. A new format, the Petit Quintero , appeared this year.

The opening of this
simple, well-made robusto is extremely pleasant. The smoke has pleasantly spicy vegetal aromas. Its strength builds gradually. As the cigar progresses, the Favoritos veers towards woody, then earthy tones. Very good draw. The last third is bold and full strength: the aromas (wet earth, leather, pepper) burst forth, intense and tasty. If the whole cigar was the same as the last third, this Quintero could play in the big leagues. All in all, an excellent smoke.

Once you get past its
crude appearance, the Londres Extra has an appealing cold draw with a wet vegetal aroma. The cigar is easy to light up but seems to peter out quickly: it tends to go soft. The flavor profile ranges from wet earth to humus with a few hints of tar adding a bitter touch. Too limited.
Attractively rustic, the
pre-light draw brings out faint woody scents. Easy to light up. This Quintero gives off just the right amount of wet earth, wood and vegetal tones. Never reaches full strength, but plenty of flavors to enjoy. Enjoyable to the end, even if it could use a little more kick. Well rolled, pleasant, and easy to smoke.

ven though small brands are going through difficult times, Rafael Gonzalez does more than just survive. Sure enough, the label is fragile. It is a house of cards, ready to fly away with the first strong wind. It would be a shame: its catalog might neither be revolutionary nor remarkable but it offers a bouquet of cigars nicely priced and easy to smoke. Besides, the Petit Coronas won an additional ring and has now an average grade. In short, if not complex, the cigars are consistent and well made. Rafael Gonzalez The story of this brand is complicated. The most recent investigations mention the Flor de Gonzalez acquisition by El Rey del Mundo in 1936. It appears that t he existence of the Marquis Rafael Gonzaléz, the great Spanish nobleman represented on the box lid, is nothing more than a legend. The character could very well have been invented. He seems to be a hybrid of two tabaqueros from Vuelta Abajo: Márquez and Rafael Gonzaléz. In 1940, the brand adopted the name La Flor de Rafael Gonzaléz before – still under the auspices of El Rey del Mundo- taking its current name, La Flor de Rafael Gonzalez Marquez. After the revolution, the brand almost disappeared. It was nursed back to life in 1965 by presenting itself as El Rey del Mundo’s twin.

ere is an old house that couldn’t be healthier! The catalog is short (four vitolas only) but offers refined and aromatic choice items, neither of which are below average. The Small Club Coronas boasts four rings; two cigars have five and the Gigantes earned one of our 2015 “coups de cœur”! We can only encourage our readers to try these rare, intense and reasonably priced habanos, even though they are hard to find. Overshadowed by more spectacular brands, Ramon Allones remains a highly recommendable house. Ramon Allones Two brothers from Galicia, Ramón and Antonio Allones, launched this label in 1846. It was the first label to decorate its boxes with vistas (representing the arms of the Spain House). The boxes were made in a Havana workshop called La Eminencia. The firm owned one of Vuelta Abajo’s most beautiful fincas, El Corojo. Ramón Allones was a true innovator. He turned the habano into a symbol of luxury. From 1903 to 1905, assisted by his brother, he led the organization of landowners bent on resisting the land grab orchestrated by the American Tobacco Company. Unfortunately for him, he had to cede the brand to British investors regrouped in the firm Hunters in 1911. England thus became the world exclusive marketer of the brand. In 1932, the Ramon Allones brand became the property of the Cifuentes (Partagas) family while the UK kept its monopoly. For a long time, one could only find Ramon Allones cigars in England.

tability and modernity are two virtues that can be credited to this glorious Cuban brand. Empire within the empire, the revered Romeo y Julieta is particularly adept at reinventing classics. R ustic-looking (a veined
and slightly toothy wrapper), the Petit Julietas opens the ball a little sharply: the first puffs are harsh and heavy, before the cigar settles down. The flavors then become earthy and roasted. Overall, this is a full-bodied and dynamic smoke with a good aftertaste. Over in just a few puffs, this Romeo is not very sophisticated but he makes a good impression nonetheless.
Easy to light, this
habano immediately produces tasty smoke, with flavors of walnut, pepper and fresh peat. The strength builds with increasing toasted aromas. The wood and spices (pepper) become more subtle. Overall, it’s never aggressive and is quite well-paced. This Regalias is modest but far from anonymous. Excellent with aperitif.

The cigar is very well built in its very smooth and taught Colorado maduro wrapper. It is densely filled and pleasant to hold. The vitola is stocky but the draw is good. It has a pre-light draw featuring precious wood and spices. The first puffs are full-bodied and tranquil. Produces a good plume of fragrant but sharp smoke right from the start. This habano gives out notes of cedar and dry leaves. It then become rounder, with notes of cocoa, humus, and toasted hazelnut. The finish is sophisticated, persistent and toasted. This Romeo de Luxe is progressive and expressive, and plays a soft, deep and tasty score. .

The pre-light test of this N° 3 only reveals a hint
of sawdust. But the start is full-bodied and measured with notes of wood, underbrush, and white pepper. Overall, after an astringent phase, it becomes pleasant (woody, liquorice, pepper, and fern). This Romeo doesn’t have much aftertaste and has limited aromatic depth but it’s easy to smoke. At this price, the quality level is perfectly acceptable.
Pleasant to look at, the Short Churchills has a
pre-light draw featuring notes of peat and cocoa. Quick and easy to light, there are strong notes of cedar backed up by a hint of wet earth. The smoke is full-bodied. The cold draw is an
explosion of fragrances: underbrush, humus, leather, precious wood, and cocoa. Medium strength and well balanced from the outset, the cigar produces rich, meaty and creamy smoke, with notes of cocoa, precious wood, and toast. The overall effect is soon sophisticated and persistent. The Romeo then becomes rather macho, with notes of wet earth, underbrush and fresh hazelnut. The waltz of flavors is timed to perfection with precision-adjusted strength. One of the very best Cuban cigars around at the moment.

his brand has seen better days. Unfortunately, time is affecting Saint Luis Rey. So enjoyable, complex and exclusive yesterday, this label seems to be suffering from a loss of interest, a priority given to more famous brands. Its short catalog is barely surviving. The only five-rings item, the exceptional and rare Double Coronas, trips this season. The other products are aligned. They have lost their opulence and aromatic singularity. Let’s hope this drop doesn’t gain steam. It would be a shame for this beautiful brand. Saint Luis Rey As far as the origin of the brand’s name, there are two theories: it either comes from Thornton Wilder’s novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey (published in 1927) or from the village San Luis, one of the two most famous Vuelta Abajo terroir (the other one being San Juan). Either way, Saint Luis Rey is a relatively new brand launched in 1938 at the request of two British importers Michael Keyser and Nathan Silverstone. In 1960, a contract is signed between Cuba and the Silverstone Company. The latter is granted an exclusive distribution deal in England. The deal expires in 1990. From then on, Saint Luis Rey is free to export anywhere in the world. In the 80s, Cuba tried to introduce a brand with a similar name, San Luis Rey, in Germany. It created confusion and the second brand vanished in 2000. Today, the Saint Luis Rey catalog has only four vitolas left. The production of the Churchills and Coronas was canceled two years ago.

This superb double
corona starts off smooth, sweet and mild. Precious wood and hot mocha mingle for true smoking pleasure. The second third of the cigar has more backbone, without being aggressive, pumping out red pepper, hints of toast and that oh-so sophisticated, deep mocha flavor. A pity that the last third lowers the bar, becoming a bit too linear. A dash more character would make Saint Luis Rey’s Double Coronas simply sensational!

Getting this Saint Luis
Rey going can sometimes be a challenge. Very mild, it leaves plenty of room for grilled and woody flavors. The Petit Coronas then fleshes out nicely with a blend of honey and dark chocolate notes. It becomes fairly creamy, but linear. This cigar lacks backbone and intensity. A bit more strength would allow the flavors to express themselves. An acceptable if slightly apathetic smoke.
flavorful cold draw on this handsome Regios, exuding hints of undergrowth and wet vegetal. The cigar starts off well-structured, even if we soon realize it’s no powerhouse. Woody and spicy notes make a brief appearance before taking a back seat to earthy and balsamic flavors. The last third disappoints, too unstructured and bitter. A decent smoke, but lacking balance.
draw serves up a nice vintage woody aroma; the first puffs are smooth and mild, sending out refined woody notes. The smoke is subtle, but lacks a little depth. In the second third, the woody overtones are joined by wet earth and notes of toasted hazelnut. The final third is balanced despite a few traces of bitterness. The Serie A is a nice, enjoyable smoke, even if it’s a little short on complexity. A handsome cigar which very likely will improve with age. One to watch.

his brand disappoints. Where is its former maestria? So promising yesterday, San Cristobal de la Habana seems to be stalling. It didn’t live up to the expectations of being the next edgy brand in Cuba. Some items have been canceled and the remaining ones barely reach an average. The decline of the double Corona El Morro and the very small Corona El Principe symbolizes San Cristobal’s fatigue. Although the habanos presented have some qualities, they are less visible and desirable than the previous seasons. Help needed.

double corona gives out pre-light notes of caramel and dried leaves. The start is complicated: the flavors (vegetal, wet peat) arrive in fits and starts. ood standing and even light progress for whatever is left of this Cuban brand. Its catalog is tiny: two cigars carry the torch for this once prestigious label. The grades are good: the Belicosos flirts with a fifth ring and the Non Plus in rising. The aromatic arc is round, appealing and very tasty. We enjoy the reassuring consistency while wondering about Sancho Panza’s future. A new Robusto type vitola could boost its catalog. It would be a pity to allow such a brand to slowly disappear. Sancho Panza Unlike 20th century glorious brands, Sancho Panza long suffered from its obscure birth. It is mentioned for the first time in 1848 among numerous other now defunct brands. Registered under the name Emilio Ohmstedt, a merchant from Germany who built its fortune in the import-export business, Sancho Panza is austere and plain. The ring doesn’t have a vista and the label has been mostly absent from the competition. In 1870, it discreetly ceded all control to the Salvador Paret Company. Soon bankrupted, Salvador Paret was subsequently forced to sell most of its brands. Sancho Panza would have disappeared entirely if Manuel Alonso (from Muñoz, Alonso y Cía) hadn’t been determined to resuscitate it. Bad luck is sometimes lasting. The brand made a tentative comeback in the early 20s. Ramón Allones acquired it and then ceded it to the Cifuentes House, which in turn sold it in 1931 to El Rey del Mundo. The jewels Sanchos and Molinos were created around that time. In the 50s, Santa Panza became the most popular label in Spain. Its determination to survive had finally paid off.

TRINIDAD
T
his historic label has known better days. Trinidad used to cultivate rarity, exception, exoticism and aromatic depth. But lately, we can’t help wondering what happened: prestigious cigars have been discontinued, the care given to the emblematic Fundadores seems to have fluttered. The petit corona Reyes lost it fifth ring. As a result, Trinidad no longer has a cigar at the top. What went wrong? With the newcomer Vigia, the label seeks to reclaim an identity by positioning itself on the big formats market. To be continued… Trinidad For a long time small with only one cigar, the Fundadores, the brand evokes Trinidad, the first Cuban city. For twenty years, only a happy few had access to the legendary cigar: the Minrex’s (Cuban State Department) guests. Launched in 1969, the cigar was designed as a double to the Cohiba Lanceros . When it finally became wildly available in 1998, it didn’t garner the expected success. Lighter and tenderer than the trendy cigars of the time, it embodied a lost generation of habanos. Its high price confused the customers. In order to energize the label, the Cuban government created three more formats in 2004 with a slightly reinforced liga: the Coloniales, the Reyes and the Robustos Extra. A Limited Edition, the Short Robustos T , was created in 2010. Unfortunately, these attempts didn’t succeed in lifting the Pinar del Río-based brand. Two cigars, the Robustos Extra and the Robustos T were discontinued. However, a new Robusto, the Vigia, was unexpectedly launched this year.

The draw is excellent, and serves up an attractive flavor profile: the white pepper is both luxurious and lush, the woody notes (cedar) tickle the palate. It’s a shame then that from the second third onwards it lacks depth: this Trinidad is not sophisticated enough to magnify its flavors and the smoke is too uniform. A little rough and harsh in the final third. Plenty strong enough but deserved a little more depth and elegance.

This Unicos starts
smoothly, with pleasant notes of cocoa and sophisticated woody hints. The overall effect is sophisticated, almost creamy. The next third becomes slightly strained, with the flavor profile shifting towards vigorous woody notes. Full-strength with fragrant smoke boasting organic notes and superb hints of mocha in the finish. Satisfying and bold, you can really taste Cuba in this top quality cigar. The construction seems a little too inconsistent however.
VEGUEROS
T
he rebirth of Vegueros was loudly announced last year but was only recently made available in cigar shops. It was about time! The three reasonably priced and easy to smoke items are doing well: the Entretiempo Robusto is well above average; so is the Mañanitas small Figurado. The corona gorda Tapados ’s rise is worth noticing. In spite of a small catalog and a relative obscurity, Vegueros cultivates its image with persistence. Vegueros Originally made in Pinar del Rio for tourists who visited the manufacture, this brand started rising in 1996 thanks to a Canadian exporter. First tied in bundles and rolled in a palm leaf, Vegueros are then presented wrapped in a box, according to exportation rules. It isn’t enough to make them successful. The discreet cigars might be too rustic and outmoded. They haven’t found an audience. Thus the Cuban government has decided to modify the label by creating three new formats with a thicker liga presented in a more modern box.

Pre-light, this well-rolled robusto offers up notes of barnyard and hay. The start is slightly harsh. Organic notes surge out before the wood and the underbrush appear. As the cigar progresses, the Vegueros becomes more intense, but remains well-balanced. Pleasant tinges of cocoa appear. Increasingly strong, the cigar’s finish is a bit disappointing, but that’s our only criticism for this habano, which is a great smoke otherwise.

Launched last year, this
This unattractive
petit figurado starts of energetically. Medium strength with notes of wood and underbrush. The cigar then becomes smoother and creamy with hints of spice, toasted hazelnut, and a few touches of cocoa. We like its rhythm and its spirit. Not exceptionally full-flavored but good body!
Tapados offers up hints of humus and wet earth on the cold draw. The start is full-bodied and smooth (notes of lichen, salted butter caramel, and hints of pepper). Then the cigar becomes stronger, but retains a good range of flavors. The final third is a bit feeble, with an inconsistent flavor profile and an aggressive finish. An excellent Vegueros… until the final third. Good value for money.
