Remote Control and Automation
Operating mechanisms range from simple manual mechanisms through spring assisted mechanisms to fully automated servo
control mechanisms for use in remote and automatic control. With the addition of the Power Isolators (PI) 'Remote Terminal Unit' and servo mechanism, disconnectors can be fully remotely controlled and linked into substation SCADA control systems. The PI RTU has been indeed specially designed as a
cost-effective solution to satisfy Utilities 'latest system supervisory and control requirements'. With DNP3 protocol as 'standard', the microcomputer controlled RTU offers sophisticated and flexible monitoring and control functions, from fault detection and indication to communication protocol management through to current and voltage monitoring and sectionalising capability, enabling the most demanding user requirement to be addressed.
The PI SCADA control system allows a network of overhead or ground mounted switches to be remotely controlled and monitored using a variety of possible communication methods (Radio, Packet Networks, GSM, PSTN). The PI SCADA software (which runs on a standard PC) is a DNP Master station and gives the system engineer the ability to quickly access the condition of the network after faults and to reconfigure the network in order to restore supplies. PI SCADA gives the following main features:

Automation In addition to our fully remotely controlled switches, we have developed simple and intelligent automatic switches requiring minimal installation works and low maintenance:
• Sectionaliser in conjunction with recloser: consisting of an onload Air Break Switch disconnector with solenoid operated, spring assisted opening mechanism. This switch senses earth faults and/or 'overload' STC current and will open automatically in the 'dead time' of the PMR. This can be adjustable for the number of fault pulses.
• Automatic drop out fuse switch: Such a device is similar to the sectionaliser but is both more simple and self powered. The typical application is a spur feeder rather than main line sectionaliser, employing a three phase switch to ensure that no phase imbalance or ferro-resonance results.
• Open point: Utilising voltage sensing insulators and with motorised operating mechanism, a standard switch can become an automatic open point.
