The Examination or the Certicate o Competency in English (ECCE) is a standardized high-intermediate level English as a oreign language (EFL) examination. It is developed and scored by the English Language Institute o the University o Michigan (ELI-UM) and is administered by over 130 authorized test centers around the world. The content and diculty o the ECCE aims at the B2 level (independent user, Vantage) o the Common European Framework o Reerence.
This book is intended to help students preparing or the University o Michigan Examination or the Certicate o Competency in English (ECCE). The book contains two complete practice tests, ollowed by answer keys and annotations that explain the items. The practice tests are intended to amiliarize test takers with the ormat and content o the ECCE. The items used have been pretested and are at the target ability level (level o diculty) o the ECCE. The sample answer sheet is designed to give students practice using this response ormat to multiple-choice items, as some students may not be amiliar with this type o test.
The ECCE tests our skill areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It emphasizes the ability o the examinee to communicate eectively in English. The ECCE may also be used as a bridge to a more academically oriented exam, such as the University o Michigan Examination or the Certicate o Prociency in English (ECPE). Examinees can use the ECCE to document their level o English or personal, public, educational, and occupational purposes. For example, in several countries, the ECCE is used as an exit exam at the end o a course o study. In addition, it is also used to provide evidence o one’s level o English to employers. Successul examinees may nd an ECCE certicate useul when applying or a job or a promotion, or when conducting business with companies worldwide.
H u h b The practice tests in this book can be used in a test preparation class by teachers and can also be used by individuals or sel-study and sel-assessment. The tests are not designed to be memorized, but to be studied to provide practice with particular types o tasks and testing methods. Memorizing these practice tests will not guarantee success on the ocial ECCE, and these tests should not be used as the primary text or a test preparation course. Rather, they should be considered supplemental to other materials and textbooks that concentrate on the oracy and literacy skill areas measured in the ECCE.
ELI-UM is committed to excellence in its tests, which are developed in accordance with the highest standards in educational measurement. All parts o the examination are written ollowing specied guidelines, and items are pretested to ensure that they unction properly. ELI-UM works closely with test centers to ensure that its tests are administered in a way that is air and accessible to examinees and that the ECCE is open to all applicants who wish to take the exam, regardless o the school they attend. ELI-UM does not recommend any specic course o study to be taken in preparation or the ECCE. The best preparation is through the general study and use o English.

Practice for the ECCE
A short excerpt rom a newspaper, memo, or letter is presented as a writing topic. Examinees can choose to write either a letter or an essay response.
1 task
instrUctions or taking tHe Practice tests Materials needed:
1.
First, students should ll out the inormation sections o the answer sheet. They should print their names and other inormation in the blocks on the let side o SIDE 1, then use a pencil to ll in the corresponding circles. They should be sure to ll in each circle completely, and not to ll in more than one circle in each column. Then they should ll in the inormation at the top o SIDE 1 (name, etc.).
2.
Listening: Students should look at the test booklet as they listen to the instructions and examples. The instructions and examples may be repeated as oten as necessary, but once the actual test questions are started, the recording should not be paused. There is a timed pause ater each question so that students will have enough time to mark their answers on the separate answer sheet. During Part II o the listening section, they may take notes in the test booklet but continue to mark their answers on the separate answer sheet.
3.
Grammar/Vocabulary/Reading (GVR): Take as much time as needed to read the instructions and examples, then begin the test. Allow 80 minutes to take the test and mark answers on the separate answer sheet.
4.
Writing: Read the instructions, then allow 30 minutes to write either a letter or an essay in response.
5.
Scoring: Ater students have nished the test, they may check their answers to the listening and GVR sections using the scoring key. To achieve passing level, they should answer about 65% o the problems correctly. This is a score o 32–33 or listening and 65 or GVR. A teacher can review the writing responses, ollowing the scoring rubric available on the Web site. However, remember that the actual ECCE writing section papers are scored at ELI-UM by trained raters, and that teachers’ evaluations o the writing section might not correspond to ELI-UM’s evaluation.
6.
The speaking section can be practiced separately. Teachers may use the picture prompts ollowing each practice test in this book or speaking practice and can reer to the scoring rubric available on the Web site to evaluate their students’ speaking ability.
• Approximately 3 hours o uninterrupted time or listening, GVR, and writing • A timing device, such as a clock or stopwatch. It is important that the time limits given or each section are ollowed so that students get practice working under timed conditions. • An answer sheet or a piece o paper numbered 1 through 50 (or listening) and 51 through 150 (or GVR) • A CD player to play back the listening test • A pencil • A piece o paper or the writing section

The following passage is based on an article in a natural science magazine.
When people think o water bualoes, they oten imagine wild and dangerous animals. But unless they are hurt or angered, water bualoes are probably the gentlest arm animals in the world. Despite their rightening appearance, they are much like household pets. Unlike cattle, they are quiet and have a natural ondness or humans. Water bualoes are so patient and mild tempered that there is no need to restrain them during milking. Because o the animal’s calm nature, water bualoes almost never have their horns removed. In contrast, most dairy cattle are dehorned when they are young to prevent them rom injuring one another when they mature. Another common myth is that water bualoes can be raised only near water. Though they love to roll i n muddy water, water bualoes live and reproduce normally in situations where there is not enough water to do this. However, several researchers report that water bualoes who wallow in muddy water do not need to be treated with insecticides because the mud coating that orms on their skin protects them rom insects and parasites. Another alse belie about water bualoes is that they can live only in tropical areas. Actually, bualoes are able to exist in a wide range o climates. Although they are most common in the tropics, water bualoes were used to pull snowplows in parts o Europe many years ago.

33.
Which days will the estival be open?
34.
What’s one thing she says they still need to do?
Male:
And who are you expecting to attend the estival?
Female:
Well, some o those attending are proessionals, like ches, or people connected to the restaurant business, but the rest are mainly locals—just regular people who come down or a great time and or a chance to try some o the best ood in the country. I the weather holds out, we expect about hal a million people over the week. And even i it rains a bit, it should still be OK, as all the exhibits and events are under big tents.
35.
What will happen i it rains during the estival?
36.
What’s the weather like now?
Male:
Now, many o these tents are set up with samples o ood, right?
Female:
That’s right. More than 100 local restaurants’ll have ches preparing samples o their specialties, and these’ll be available or people to taste. O course it’s not ree, but it’s a lot cheaper than maybe buying a complete dinner at one o those ancy restaurants. So it works like this. You need tickets to buy the ood. The tickets are sold in centralized locations or 50 cents a piece. Then you take these tickets to the ood tents. The cost o most ood samples is between two and six tickets. One really nice part o this event is that a percentage o the ticket sales is donated to local charities in the Chicago area.
37.
How many restaurants are represented at the estival?
38.
What do charities get rom the estival?
Practice test —listening section scriPts Male:
But there’s more to the estival than just sampling ood…
Female:
Oh, yeah. Besides the ood samples, there are other events going on daily. These are at set, scheduled times, and oten are repeated during the day, and even throughout the week. There are some proessional demonstrations that are run by amous ches. One really popular one has to do with choosing and using the right kitchen knives. I was amazed at the variety available and how sp ecialized these knives are. The ches demonstrate the proper technique or using the knives, and also answer questions.
39.
How oten does an event happen?
40.
Who gives the demonstrations?
Male:
Wow, could I buy one o those special knives?
Female:
Well, they are really expensive, but i you’re interested, there’s a special tent set up with items or sale, and people can buy the knives used in the demonstrations. The sales tent also has k itchen utensils, ches’ uniorms, cookbooks, pots and pans, just about anything you might need to prepare great ood at home. Some o the companies represented are oering discounts on some items, so you might actually save some money i you buy things at the estival.
41.
Where can you buy a knie?
42.
What can you buy in the sales tent?
Male:
Last year, there was a che competition, and it was really popular, will you have that again?
Female:
You bet! It was a really popular event last year, and we’ll be doing it again. This competition is between two ches, one a local avorite rom here in Chicago, the other one rom somewhere else. Usually the other ches are rom someplace else in the United States, but last year there was someone directly rom France to do the show. Anyway, they each are given the same basic ingredients, and then they have a set amount o time to prepare their meal, and then the audience gets to vote on who made the most delicious or exciting meal. Actually this event is a bit dierent because the audience has to pay to attend— but then they get to eat the meals that are prepared by the ches.
43.
Who will be in the che competition this year i it is a typical year?
44.
Who judges the competition?
45.
How can someone attend the competition?
Male:
Even i people are not interested in tasting all the dierent oods, they should still think about coming to the estival, I mean it s ounds like there’s a lot going on.
Female:
Right, besides the ood tents, you can just wander around or nd a place to sit and enjoy the estival. There is ree music entertainment all during the day and into the evening, too. Also, you can visit the displays on health and nutrition. For example, there’s a tent that, on the weekend, there’s a nurse available giving talks on good nutrition, and she’ll even do health checks like checking people’s cholesterol levels. Another thing you can do is look at all the items or sale, especially the cookbooks—there are thousands o them available.
46.
What is ree to people during the entire estival?
47.
I you want your cholesterol checked, when should you come to the estival?
48.
I you want to purchase a new cookbook, when should you come to the estival?
Male:
So it’s great or the whole amily, right?
Female:
Well, the estival has been directed more toward adults. However, this year we do have a new event especially or children. It’s called What’s Cookin’ or Kids. People can drop o their kids in order to go o to watch some o the other events and demonstrations. At the kids’ event, the younger kids ages our to eight learn how to make healthy snacks and the older ones get experience preparing whole meals. We think this will help draw in more people who have children to our great estival.
49.
Who are most o events at the estival or?
50.
How does the new event help parents?
Male:
Well, I know I’ll be there! Thanks, Allison, or taking time to talk with us while you’re so busy with all the estival arrangements.
Female:
Thanks Tony, it was my pleasure.
