INTRODUCTION Whenever we walk we waste our energy. There are many ways to recover some of this energy in the form of electricity. The easiest and the spac spacee sav avin ingg way way is to produc oducee elec electr tric icit ityy from from piezoelectric property of certain crystals .
PRINCIPLE Piezoelectricity is the ability of some
materials to generate an el elec ectr trica icall potent potentia ial l response to applied mechanical stress . This may take the form form of of a separation separation of electric electrical al charge charge across across the crystal latt attice. If the material is not short circuited ,the charge induces a voltage across the material. The word is derived from the Greek piezo or piezein , which means to squeeze or press .

MATERIALS REQUIRED Piezoelectric transducers-as required for the area 1N4148 diodes-equal to the no. Of transducers Cardboard-required size wires-required Multimeter-1 Crocodile or alligator clips with wires-2 Soldering iron-1 soldering wire wire strippers Insulated copper wire-a reel
PROCEDURE The picture to the right is the first prototype before building my project It contains two sheets of cardboard with a piezotransducer wired between the two. The readings as I stamped on it are pictured below, PAGE 2
The pictures of the soldering on the piezoelectric transducers are,
For the project first we have to arrange the piezoelectric tran transd sduc ucer erss on the the card cardbo boar ard d and and mark mark thei theirr pl plac aces es for for sticking on later.
Cut pieces of cardboard to a size larger than the transducers.

Take a reel of insulated copper wire and mark the places and strip off the enamel on the copper wire. Cover the stripped piece of wire with solder. Solder a end of diode with one of the electrode odes of the transducers. Join oin oth other electrodes of the transdu sducers ers commonly.
Connect the cathode odes of all the diodes together.
The connection of the diodes will act as a positive source and the other wire connected commonly acts as a ground.

RESULTS The output power is directly proportional to the pressure applied. ➔ No constant output is seen unless a high frequency of stepping on it and off it is present. It has certain dis-advantages of heavy ➔ weights or loads. ➔ When the area of the cells are increased the power output is also increased. ➔
APPLICATIONS Can be implemented in heavy crowded areas as a type of floor. ✔ Can be implemented in the boots of the soldiers and the power generated can be used for their equipments and thus it reduces the load of battery backups carried by the soldiers. ✔ Research has been going on by scientists for the above mentioned item. ✔ It has been implemented in a disco in Netherlands and in sub-ways in Japan.
