The  Black origins of Buddha

Introduction  There are absolutely no historical records that portray Buddha as Aryan or White.  The first people who conceptualized and worshipped the divine image of the Negroid  mould of humanity were the Negroes, and they actually started the practice of Buddhism,  the world's first missionary religion.  Buddha was an Enlightened Master from the Sakya clan of the Naga Race, and was the  first man on earth to preach the great principles of equality, liberty and fraternity. He  caused the Nagas to become conscious of their own mind power as opposed to the mantra  power.  Buddhism, whose doctrines include the Golden Rule, was established 500 years before  Christianity in the area now called the Middle East (Africa). Buddha is not a name but a  title meaning Enlightened One, Blessed One, or to Become awake. Over the centuries,  there have been several recorded Buddhas like Gautama, Sakayanumi, and Siddhartha.  Black Buddhist missionaries introduced Buddhism to China, Japan and other countries.  It is clear therefore that Buddhism did not start in Japan nor China, yet it is professed and  practiced by millions of devotees throughout Asia. Under the Black King Ashoka, the  religion of this Negro God was spread throughout Europe, even into the remotest parts of  Britain. Buddhism actually started on the India Continent where the first inhabitants were  Black people who had migrated from Ethiopia some 50,000 years earlier, establishing  what is known as the Indus Valley Civilization.  There were two types of Blacks from Africa who created the first civilization of mankind.  One was the Nubian, who had broad features and Woolly, Nappy hair, while the other  had the aquiline nose with straight hair,(Dravidian) but both were early descendents  straight out of Black Africa. The statues of ancient Buddahs of the East depicted him as  having wolly hair is always shown in corn rows, or in a pepper corn style with small  tight curls. Original statues of Buddha clearly show him to be Africoid, with the wide  nose, thick lips and frizzy, nappy, hair which are distinctive Negro characteristics.  In most ancient temples throughout Asia where he is still worshipped, he is shown as jet  Black. In fact, in most of the ancient temples of Asia and India, statues of the gods and  goddesses have Africoid features with woolly hair in the pepper corn style, while some  even have dreadlocks. These pictures of Buddha portray him in no uncertain terms as a  Negro with kinky, coiled hair, a flat nose and full lips

Early India Brahmisnism  In ancient India, these invaders began a slow, methodical, and systematic destruction of  the Indus Valley civilization. Their strategy was to first assimilate the local religions and  deities of the native people. Next, they gradually instituted a multi­level, color based,  caste system they called Brahminism. This system placed the invading Caucasian  minority on the top (they called themselves "brahmin", or "priestly ruling class"), and the  majority of darker people whom they conquered, on the bottom (the "sudrahs", or  "working class"). Records of the Aryan invasions into India are aptly preserved in Indian  literature such as the Rig Veda. More recently, a scientific article, appeared in the San  Francisco Chronicle, on May, 26, 1999, confirming this history through the use of  genetics. Researchers from the University of Utah and Andhra Pradesh University in  India confirmed through a study of DNA and the Y male chromosomes of the Indian  population, that there were a group of males with European affinities who were largely  responsible for this invasion 3 or 4,000 years ago. Although this strategy for enslavement  is very similar to most patterns of racism seen around the world, the slavery and color  based separation into castes that the Aryans introduced into India is unique. This ideology  was skillfully blended with indigenous beliefs to form a religion and a way of life that  eventually became known as Hinduism. Its Brahmin priesthood were successful in  keeping the caste structure in place, and even today, the once intricate and liberating  African philosophy of karma and rebirth that are now a part of Hinduism have been  strategically reworked and used to suggest to millions of people that if they were born  into slavery, it is their karma or fate.  This was the world that the dark skinned Siddhartha Guatama was born into. He  searched in earnest for a way to bring light to his people and end this suffering. Out of his  own enlightenment, a philosophy was born that became known as Buddhism. This  revolutionary philosophy offered a path towards liberation from mental and

psychological slavery for millions of Black and Brown people. Buddhism offered a path  of salvation, and the end of the concept of being born, and re­born into slavery. Godfrey  Higgins wrote in 1833 that, "Between the Brahmans and the Buddhists there exists the  greatest conceivable enmity. They (the Brahmans) will hold no communication with  them, believing themselves to be made unclean, and to require purification, should they  step within even the shadow of a Buddhist." Today, at this very hour, an underclass  called "Untouchables", still exists in India after hundreds of years. They are poor Blacks  who are on the lowest rung of the caste ladder system. An Untouchable is subject "by  law", to having their tongue cut if they dare read any sacred scriptures. They can be  beaten or even killed if their shadow is allowed to fall on a Brahmin. They may be  required to wear a broom tied to their backs so as to sweep away their footsteps as they  walk. They must look down, and never make eye contact with a Brahmin. Their women  are frequently raped, and their men murdered at the whim of a Brahmin, often without  any legal consequence. All of this "today", is sanctioned by law. Many Untouchables  who are conscious of the history of their country turn to Buddhism as a way to escape the  caste ideology as countless generations before them have done. To these early rebels,  Siddhartha Guatama, the Black, curly haired Buddha was their liberator.  Eventually the Brahman succeeded in overcoming the Buddhists in India, and used the  same strategy to lay claim to the Buddhist religion while at the same time destroying their  temples, and pushing the original adherents out of India. It was around 260 B.C. that  many Buddhists were forced to flee to Thailand, Vietnam, China, Tibet and neighbouring  countries throughout Asia. The history of these Black holy men throughout Asia explains  the affinity experienced by the 20th century African American soldier who fought in  South East Asia during the Vietnam War. The point here is that generations who  struggled under physical, mental and spiritual slavery in India is the reason why images  of the Black freedom fighter Buddha, as well as Black Buddhist monks show up all  throughout Asia and China, where Buddha's disciple Bodhiharma was to visit many years  later. This then, is the untold history of Buddha, his times and his path towards liberation  known as Zen or Ch'an Buddhism. This is the history of the philosophy that has so  profoundly influenced the practice and development of the martial arts in Asia and  around the world.

Buddhas’ Teachings and Early Life  Siddhartha was born in Lumbini and raised in the small kingdom or principality of  Kapilvastu, both of which are in modern day Nepal. Siddhārtha Gautama  was a spiritual  teacher in the north eastern region of the Indian subcontinent who  founded Buddhism. In  most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha ,  of our age, "Buddha"  meaning "awakened one." The time of his birth and death are uncertain.  Buddha taught  "The essence of the Way is detachment. And the goal of those who practice is freedom  from appearances. The teachings  of Buddhism comes from ancient teachings of Kemet.  The origins of these teachings came from out of the lesser mystery schools of Kemet.  Buddha taught , his followers  not to follow the two extremes of sensual indulgence  which is low, vulgar, worldly, ignoble, and  conducive to harm; and self­mortification,  which is painful, ignoble, and conducive to harm,  this gave birth to the middle path that  by avoiding the extremes, gives vision and knowledge and leads to calm, realization, and  enlightenment.  Explained simply by  following the two extremes you would be affected  by  the laws of  cause and effect. (refer to Sacred Wisdom  of Tehuti by Dr Malachi Z  York) 

The Middle Path  What is the middle path? It is this Noble Eightfold Path, namely:  right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort,  right mindfulness, right concentration.". To put it simply Right Knowledge, Right  Wisdom and Right Overstanding.  Lets look at the  meaning of the words Way and Path  When we look at the word Way in the English dictionary it means:  (a) “road, path, or highway affording passage from one place to another. “  (b) ”Progress or travel along a certain route or in a specific direction: on his way north.”  (c) ” A usual or habitual manner or mode of being, living, or acting”.  When we look at the word Path  If we now look at the word Path meaning :  (a) “A trodden track or way.”  (b) “A course of action or conduct: example “the path of righteousness.”

If we look at the word path phonetically we get the Egyptian deity Ptah .  Ptah means the “Opener , one who opens the way ”.  Ptah is the creator deity  he created by means of utterance the sacred word”  These are all  part of the original teachings coming out of ancient Kemet  giving birth to  the many different religions that we have to today, which has caused chaos and

The Four Noble Truths  The following is an except taken from Ancient Future  written by Wayne Chandler. 

The First Noble Truth  The first noble truth teaches humankind’s frustration arises from our refusal; to accept  that all things are transitory and impermanent , that flows and change are basic features of  nature 

The Second Noble Truth  The second noble truth teaches about our clinging to illusions that we create. These  illusions give an improper view of life . 

The Third Noble Truth  The third noble truth assures that the pain and suffering of humanity can be ended, that  the vicious cycle of cause and effect , can be broken by acknowledging the oneness of  life the interconnectedness of all things. 

The Fourth Noble Truth  The fourth noble truth leads to the path of transformation through  discipline , study,  austerity.

Da Mo . . .  The Indian Buddhist monk Da Mo Or as he is also known, Bodhidharma, Bodhitara, P'u­t'i Ta­mo,  Ta­mo, Bodai Daruma, and Daruma to mention a few of his names...  "The essence of the Way is detachment. And the goal of those who practice is freedom from  appearances." Taken from Bodhidharma's Wake­Up Sermon as translated by Red Pine. 

In most of East Asia, today, Da Mo is revered as the spiritual father of Zen Buddhism, having  been the twenty­eighth patriarch after Sakyamuni (the historic Buddha) and the first patriarch of  Zen Buddhism in China. He started what eventually became the Ch'an school of Buddhism in  China. He is also the founder of a weaponless fighting art that was the precursor of modern­day  martial arts.  During the Chinese Southern Liang dynasty [502­557 A.D.] the Emperor Liang Wu invited the  Buddhist monk Da Mo to preach Buddhism in China. Da Mo arrived in China around 520 A.D.,  although accounts have it that he arrived during the Sung dynasty (420­479 A.D.), and eventually  met Emperor Wu at Chin­ling (now Nanking).  When Da Mo met Emperor Wu, the Emperor asked, "What is the holy ultimate truth?" Da Mo  answered, "It is Emptiness itself and there is nothing holy." "Who then is the one who at present  stands confronting me," responded the Emperor? "I do not know (fushiki, pu­shih)!" was Da Mo's  response. This now­famous question­and­answer dialogue "I know not," is considered a reverent  allegory for explaining specific Zen tenets.  After the Emperor decided he did not like Da Mo's Buddhist theory/answer, Da Mo withdrew to a  Shaolin Temple, in Honan Province. Entering the temple he saw that the priests in an emaciated  condition, were weak and sickly, so he shut himself away to ponder the problem. When he  emerged after nine years of seclusion, some say he wrote two classics: Yi Gin Ching or I Chin  Ching (Muscle/Tendon Changing Classic) and Shii Soei Ching or Hsi Sui Chin (Marrow Washing  Classic). Others say that he secreted the two works in the walls of the temple, and that they were  found only after his demise. Hsi Sui Chin, was said to have been transcribed by Do Mo's disciple  Hui K'o and is said to have been lost to the world. The second work, I Chin Ching, has been  translated several times, thereby clouding its actual origination. Regardless, Da Mo's teachings  instructed the Shaolin priests how to gain health and change their physical bodies from weak to  strong (muscle/tendon changing), and taught the priests how to use Chi to strengthening the  blood and immune system, and to energize the brain and attain enlightenment (marrow washing). 

The basis of these works, the physical drills of which are called Shihpa Lohan Shou, or Eighteen  Hands of the Lohan (Buddha), were incorporated into the Shaolin Chi Kung and martial arts (what  became known as Kung Fu ­ which is pronounced gung­fu, or, Shaolin ch'uan fa in Mandarin and  which in Japanese is Shorinji kempo) training of the times. At the present time, Lohan is used to  designate all famous disciples of the historic Buddha, but more generally the term refers to those  five hundred arhats (Sanskrit term for those who have achieved nirvana) who are supposed to  reappear on earth as Buddha.

Several decades after Da Mo's death a ch'uan fa master named Chueh Yan Shang­jen combined  and increased Da Mo's original eighteen hand­and­foot positions to seventy­two. Ch'uen then met  with a Shensi Province martial arts master, Li­shao. The two further enlarged Ch'uen's 72  "strokes" to 170 and gave the best of them names such as the tiger, leopard, dragon, snake and  crane.  Most ch'uan fa forms practiced today, are the descendants of the 170 (173) hand­foot positions of  Ch'ueh Yan and can be traced further, back to the eighteen positions of Da Mo. Also based  directly on Da Mo's Shaolin ch'uan fa is Kosho­ryu (or "Old Pine Tree Style") kempo. In essence,  the ideals of Zen Buddhism as expounded by Da Mo are fundamental to the physical  manifestations of the Kosho­ryu fighting art. The development of restraint, propriety, humbleness  and integrity are the cornerstones of Kosho­ryu kempo, with the actual combat techniques merely  one of the many modes of reaching these goals. 

Da Mo is thought to have died around 534 A.D. 

The Five Animals  In the Chinese martial arts, imagery of the Five Animals (Chinese: 五形; pinyin: wǔ  xíng; literally "Five Forms")—Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon—appears  predominantly in Southern styles, especially those associated with Guangdong and Fujian  Provinces.  The Five Animal martial arts supposedly originated from the Henan Shaolin Temple,  which is north of the Yangtze River, even though imagery of these particular five animals  as a distinct set (i.e. in the absence of other animals such as the horse or the monkey as in  T'ai Chi Ch'üan or Xíngyìquán) is either rare in Northern Shaolin martial arts—and  Northern Chinese martial arts in general—or recent (cf. wǔxíngbāfǎquán; 五形八法拳;  "Five Form Eight Method Fist").  The Legend of the Five Animals  Shaolin first became famous because the Tang Dynasty (618–907) saw fit to favor the  monastery with its patronage as thanks for the role its monks played in the Battle of  Hulao. The sudden renown of the Shaolin martial arts attracted pilgrims who came  specifically to study its fighting methods. However, the more people that sought training  at the temple, the smaller the proportion of them that had the time or the inclination to  truly dedicate themselves. Some regarded the Shaolin imprimatur as a kind of talisman  that rendered years of training unnecessary. Others only wanted to fight well and cared  little for esoterica like qìgōng, erasing over centuries the difference between the Shaolin  martial arts and those crude methods on which it was supposed to improve.  Another was Jueyuan, who in the 13th century started from first principles with the 18  Luohan Hands, the original 18 techniques of the Shaolin martial arts. Like those before  him, Jueyuan used the original 18 Luohan Hands as a foundation, expanding its 18  techniques into 72. Still, he felt the need to seek knowledge from outside the confines of  the temple.

In Gansu Province in the west of China, in the city of Lanzhou, he met Li Sou, a master  of "Red Fist" Hóngquán (紅拳). Li Sou accompanied Jueyuan back to Henan, to Luoyang  to introduce Jueyuan to Bai Yufeng, master of an internal method.  They returned to Shaolin with Bai Yufeng and expanded Jueyuan's 72 techniques to  approximately 170. Moreover, using their combined knowledge, they restored internal  aspects to Shaolin boxing.  They organized these techniques into Five Animals: the Tiger, the Crane, the Panther, the  Snake and the Dragon.

Hidden  History  The following excerpt is from "BKF Kenpo ­ History and Advanced Strategic Principles" by Grandmasters  Steve Muhammad and Donnie Williams, published by CFW Enterprises. 

"...a visitor to China today will find two monumental, 12 foot long mural paintings on the  walls of the White Garment Hall in the Shaolin Monastery in the Honan province of  China (Shaolin, or "Young Forest" in the Mandarin dialect is "Sil Lum" in Cantonese  Chinese, and "Shorinji" in Japanese). These two murals are well known and feature  dozens of Chinese and obviously Black Shaolin monks, engaged in boxing training  together Not surprisingly, because no one has come forward to present the complete  history of how and why these Black people appear in these paintings, this history has  largely been ignored. Owing much to ignorance, some people will say the figures  represent "dark Chinese" monks. Many martial artists in the West will look at these  paintings, and simply will not see Black people ­ period. This attitude is not surprising  and recalls to mind how Hollywood approached the very popular 1970's television series  Kung­Fu which gave America its first look at the Asian martial arts. Producers by­passed  the Asian martial arts genius Bruce Lee for whom the lead role was specifically written,  and instead cast a Caucasian actor, David Carradine to play his part.

The history of the dark skinned brothers of the Chinese Shaolin monks have been  conspicuously excluded all together from the history of the martial arts. Owing to the  "impropa­ganda" and stereotyping of African people during and after slavery, various  cultures are not quick to embrace the African, and is even less inclined to teach the  African what many believe he or she should already know. Rather than engage in  speculation as to who these dark skinned people are, or weave elusive stories about  "bronzed monks", we need only look to the impartial sciences of anthropology and  genetics for the facts.  In 1998 the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science concluded a study by the  Chinese Human Genome Diversity Project and made public their findings which stated  that "Most of the population of modern China ­ one fifth of all the people living today ­  owes its genetic origins to Africa...". The study was the result of a consortium of several  leading research groups in the People's Republic of China in combination with the  Human Genetics Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston,  Texas. The research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In  addition to genetic evidence linking China to Africa, archeological evidence has recorded  close to 100 "pyramids" that are located in a 100 km area around the city Xi'an in central  China. This site is also well known as the location of the famous life­size terra cotta  warriors. Further study of the history and art of the Shang and Chou dynasties in China  will reveal even more African influences. All of this is not to say, however, that Chinese  culture is African. It is not and should never be misinterpreted to be. Instead, this  information and evidence points to a clear interaction and anthropological connection that  must be acknowledged if the complete story is to be told in its entirety.  As it relates to the murals mentioned earlier, the sciences of genetics and anthropology  provides further insight into the accounts of the martial arts in China specifically  pertaining to the master of the famous Buddhist priest from India, Bodhiharma. Known  as "Ta Mo" (Great Black) in China, and "Daramu" in Japan, Bodhiharma was a 28th

generation disciple of Siddhartha Guatama, otherwise known as the Buddha. Bodhiharma  travelled to China where he taught his brand of exercises which became the foundation  for Quan fa, or "Chuan fa", which means "the way of the fist". In Japan it corresponds to  their word "Kenpo" which means "the law of the fist", or "fist law". The history of  Bodhiharma and his influence in China has become legendary, but the more profound  story of his master, Siddhartha Guatama, and the philosophy of Buddhism is rarely, if  ever discussed when explaining the history of the martial arts. It is vital to our  understanding of Kenpo and the martial arts that we look closer at India, the times in  which Buddha lived, and who the Buddha was. This will help us to clarify Mas Oyama's  references to Africa in his words and pictures, as well as provide the full story for the  Black Buddhist monks who appear on the murals at the Shaolin Temple in China today.
