Multi-game circuits such as DreamHack and the I ntel Extreme Masters continue to be a crucial area of growth and pillars of the eSports community, but perhaps the biggest trends of 2013 have been the explicit and direct involvement by publishers and developers in supporting their respective games as competitive titles. The big three contemporary eSports titles (League of Legends, StarCraft II, and Dota 2) have settled into a holding pattern as all 3 publishers host their very own leagues, each of which awards millions of dollars in prizing. The million dollar Call of Duty Championship has had a massive impact on growing the CoD eSports community, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is now directly supported by Valve with a compendium-esque support model which lead to the biggest eSports event in Counter-Strike history this November. And Capcom launched the Capcom Cup with qualifiers spread across every major region for the Street Fighter community. Game developers and publishers have caught on to the massive growth in eSports viewership and many are beginning to see investing in and supporting eSports as a key marketing strategy for their competitive titles. More and more games have begun to include Twitch streams, specifically of their eSports tournaments and players, directly within their game client and are integrating Twitch in new, meaningful ways. Spectator modes are no longer an afterthought, but a cor e feature touted throughout the development process. It’s not just the select few communities that have benefited—nearly every eSports community seems to have grown in tandem within the last year. The Year in eSports
eSports has been around for longer than you might think, dating all the way back to the high score jockeys of the arcades in the late 70s, to the rebirth of competition with Street Fighter II in the early nineties, and the genesis of the term 'eSports' with Quake, Counter-Strike, and StarCraft in the early 2000s. In this time there have been numerous peaks and valleys as pivotal institutions and community pillars rose and fell. Speedrunning is a Phenomenon
Speedrunning is the sport—nay—the art of completing video games as fast as humanly possible. This is achieved by pushing the limits of digital worlds, abusing every known glitch and unintended 'feature' in both retro games and new releases alike. Because speedrunning is the culmination of tens of thousands of hours of trial, error, error, and refinement, it makes each stream an unique experience of simultaneous joy and frustration. Given this intense dedication, many speedrunners focus their talents on only one or two specific games.
CosmoWright
As the founder of SpeedRunsLive, Cosmo continues to be a strong pillar and positive influence within the speedrunning community. It was a dramatic year for Cosmo, with multiple records gained and lost, as well as a new version of his cornerstone title, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD.
AdamAK
The breakout star of the speedrunning community for 2013, AdamAK is a bit foul mouthed, but it is kind of expected when you play nothing but Grand Theft Auto. Adam slowly gained a following throughout the year, with his Summer Games Done Quick performances putting him over the top. We expect even greater success from him once the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V is released.
Siglemic
One of the original Speedrunning stars of Twitch, Siglemic still continues to delight thousands of concurrent viewers per session with his extremely technical gameplay. His popularity is even more impressive when you consider that, unlike other Speedrunners who received updated versions or sequels to their preferred games, Siglemic is still only known to play one game: Super Mario 64 on the original hardware.
The speedrunning community continues to be a strong pillar of growth and constant viewership, and newer versions of popular games have breathed new life and intrigue i nto this movement. Most popular games among speedrunners continue to be classic Nintendo titles, but AdamAK has helped break that stigma. Playing both Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City, AdamAK has made a following out of his incredibly impressi ve gameplay, gameplay, as well as the hype coming off the latest release in the series. Speedrunning also has potential as an eSport thanks to Binding of Isaac League Racing (Boilr.org) which has built a popular following on Twitch. These BOILeR matches involve two players going head-tohead in a match using a tournament-standard save file. They start at the same time and race to see who will make it to a specified location first.

Games Playing Games: So Weirdly Awesome
What if we told you one of the biggest trends of 2013 weren't people playing video games, but video games playing themselves? Meta-Gaming brought the thrill of non-competition and frivolous entertainment to the Twitch masses, whether it was betting on Salty Bet or watching Cookie Clicker streams, it was a very strange time for all of us.
Salty Bet PC Gamer calls it " the pop culture royal rumble that we can't stop watching," and neither can the Twitch audience. Salty Bet features thousands of fighting game characters battling one another in CPU vs CPU fights, which viewers get to bet upon with fake money. It's so pervasive on Twitch that we even have our own fighter: Twitch Waifu Chan.
Video Game Championship Wrestling What if the WWE featured Super Mario instead of John Cena and co.? That's the question roposed by VGCW (Video Game Championship Wrestling) which combines a goofy, user-generated wrestling game with an even goofier storyline, keeping Twitch viewers anxious to find out what happens next. VGCW expanded this year, spawning a separate Women's division, as well as a show based on EA's The Sims, VGCW At Home.
Spelunky Death Roulette Taking a queue from Salty Bet, Spelunky Death Roulette allows viewers to place bets on which of the many things will ultimately kill the player in a game of Spelunky. Spelunky. Projects like Spelunky Death Roulette, and the Binding of Isaac League Racing, are doing wonders for prolonging the life of singleplayer games on Twitch.

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS II
The game that helped launch Twitch and our current eSports renaissance shows no sign of slowing down. 2013 saw Blizzard's WCS pro circuit deliver structure, maturity, and an exciting story line to its passionate viewer base.
The Call of Duty juggernaut jumps higher in the viewer rankings year after year. The latest iteration added eSports features and integrated Twitch broadcasting from the Xbox 360, and was rewarded with explosive growth on Twitch.
Major PC and eSports titles populated the top games on Twitch in early 2013, but console games like The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Call of Duty: Ghosts quickly made their way up the ranks after their respective launches. With the growing popularity of broadcasting to Twitch from PS4 and Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One broadcasting functionality, we expect to see even more console games cracking our charts.
LEAGUE OF LEGENDS
DOTA 2
WORLD OF WARCRAFT
MINECRAFT
League of Legends is one of the most popular eSports titles in the world and has an enormous broadcaster base. It's no surprise to see them at the top of this list.
Explosive growth, large prize pools, and a burgeoning tournament scene —all while still in Beta! Now that it's F2P for all, Dota 2 is poised to execute on its serious potential.
This streaming staple continues to grow on Twitch. Populated by devoted viewers and some of the most interactive broadcasters, WoW should see even more growth with the upcoming expansion.
Minecraft continues its march to top game status on Twitch. Their recent integration with Twitch should keep them on the rise.
