A)ter some length the rocession came to a halt at a stone edi)ice. +t &as ob"ious that the salalians had not built th is monument as they li"ed in rude huts and this &as a structure comosed o) blocks o) unmortised stone. 5hate"er shae it once had &as no& obscured by great dri)ts o) the &hite ash and the assage o) countless years erhas thousands. 5hat + could see o) the sur)ace &as &orn smooth resumably )rom the unending erosion o) the &ind. he salalians marched directly through a tall arch&ay &hich &ould easily admit a team o) horses and disaeared )rom "ie& )ollo&ing a ath &orn into the "ery stones that made u the )loor o) the edi)ice. eters and + &aited )or a time unsure as to our neFt action. +) &e )ollo&ed too closely &e &ould undoubtedly be massacred by armed &arriors. He blundered in the darkness and + heard him cursing and the sounds o) ob?ects being mo"ed. + could see nothing until there )lared a ale sickly green light. eters &as standing on a block o) stone holding the strangest3looking lantern + had e"er seen. here &as no metal on it simly an eight inch tall glass entagon &hich narro&ed to a oint at the bottom and &as caed by a )lat stone &hich &as toed in turn by a stone ring that eters held. +nside the glass &as a roiling liEuid that seemed to be in some &ay boiling and it &as this that g a"e out the "ery strange illumination. + looked a&ay )rom the Eueer thing grate)ul enough )or the light but thoroughly re"olted at its source. Although the tunnel continued it &as "ery di))erent. his seemed some sort o) &har) &ithout &ater and certainly it &as one o) the strangest laces + had e"er yet been in.

As + &as returning to the tunnel belo& + heard a great hammering sound. Alarmed + roceeded more slo&ly until + came uon eters beating the )loor &ith one o) the metal oles. 5hile the )loor sho&ed considerable damage )rom the abuse the ole did not seem to ha"e su))ered in the slightest. 5hen he caught sight o) me he shook the ole at me saying that it &as )it )or use.
