CMM
One or two CMMs (active and standby) provide the ability to monitor and control components within the chassis. Access to the CMMs is from an external Ethernet connection via either Telnet or HTTP; the default connection is SSH and HTTPS. If a second CMM is installed in the chassis, it is inactive but remains in a “ready to take over” state (hot spare). The first CMM stores state information about the chassis in such a way that if the element stops functioning, the second CMM can detect its inactivity, activate itself, and take up managing the chassis without any disruption. In Flex, the CMM does not support firmware updates. Compute node firmware updates are performed in-band (through the OS), by ToolCenter tools (UpdateXpress), or by using the FSM or through the IMMs of the Compute nodes. The recommended method is by using UpatedeXpress

SSS (See Select Service) Button – When in deferred maintenance mode, the fault LED of a failed component, such as a compute node, power supply, or fan, is not lit. Pushing the SSS fault Button lights the fault LED of all failed components which are visible from the front or rear of the chassis. Internal fault LEDS (such as the board LEDs next to DIMMs) are not lit until activated by internal lightpath switch.

Summary
New mechanical • All new compute nodes, CMM, fans, power supplies, and I/O module mechanicals •
CMM no longer performs firmware updates • CMM is for single chassis management • ToolCenter, in-band, or FRM are used to perform firmware updates
•
IMMs are visible externally • Common support approach for System x servers
•
FSM appliance for multi-chassis management • Ability to perform firmware updates
•
New higher speed fabric connectivity to I/O modules
