The thermal insulation products and all associated materials shall comply with the latest relevant British Standards. The following British Standards are the most commonly used. However, the contractor shall ensure that all applicable standards are complied weather listed hereafter or not. BS 476 Part 4 – Non-combustibility test for materials. BS 476 Part 7 – Method for classification of the surface spread of flame of products. BS 476 Part 20 – method of determination of the fire resistance of elements of construction. BS 1485 – Specification for zinc coated hexagonal steel wire netting. BS 3958 – Thermal Insulation materials. BS 5422 – Method for specifying thermal insulating material on pipes, ductwork and equipment (in the temperature range -40°C to + 700°C). 2 PRODUCTS 2.1
GENERAL a)
For general application the thermal insulation materials shall be made from non-combustible materials. Materials that are not entirely non-combustible maybe accepted if they have self-extinguishing characteristics, the total mass of combustible material is small and combustion does not produce dense smoke or toxic fumes. All material finishes shall confirm to class 0 classification of flame spread.
ii.
Thermal insulation materials and their finishes shall be asbestos free and be suitable for continuous use throughout the range of operating temperatures and within the environment indicated.
iii.
Insulation shall be rot proof, odorless, shall not contribute to metal corrosion. Any finishes or coverings used shall not deteriorate with age or the effect of solar radiation.
iv.
Flamability & Smoke, Density: Class VO (UL - 94), Self - extinguishing (ASTM D 635) , Non-Flammable
v.
Corrosion of copper, stainless: Non corrosive- DIN 1988
vi.
Insulation material shall be Closed Cell Elastomeric Thermal insulation . NonFlammable. Or equivalent.

DUCT INSULATION a)
Thermal insulation of rectangular ductwork shall be closed cell or rock wool. Thermal insulation for circular ducts shall be closed cell. Insulation density shall be a minimum of 32 kg/m3 and thermal conductivity shall be equal or less than 0.035 W/m K
ii.
Thermal insulation of all treated fresh air, supply air rectangular, circular or flexible ducts inside buildings generally shall be at least 25 mm thick.
iii.
Thermal insulation of all external ducts, ducts in plant room and ducts in large unconditioned space shall be at least 50 mm thick.
iv.
For duct work carrying chilled air, the insulation shall cover the flanges either by means of flange boxes or by increasing the general thickness of insulation to give at least 6 mm cover at the flanges.
v.
Extract and transfer air ducts shall not be insulated unless they carry cooled air and are located in unconditioned space such as shafts, basement, ceiling void … etc; or where there exist possibility of condensation within or on the outside of the duct.
vi.
Where integral or surface reinforcement is called for, or required in connection with insulation materials, it shall be one of the following:

Galvanized wire netting of not less than 0.91 mm diameter and 22 mm mesh size.
2.
Galvanized wire, either 0.91 mm diameter spirally wound at approximately 75 mm pitch or 1.21 diameter when used in single strands at right angles to the axis of ducts or pipes.

Aluminum band 20 mm wide by 0.51 mm thick, with galvanized wire end loops.
4.
Aluminum or galvanized steel edge reinforcement strips secured to the insulation with adhesive.
Insulation and insulation fixing materials shall have fire indices ratings not exceeding 0,0,0,0 (Four Zero), be non-hygroscopic, and have a maximum thermal conductivity of 0.04 W/mK at 20 deg. C. CHILLED AND HEATING WATER PIPE WORK INSULATION a)
Thermal insulation shall be closed cell materials.
ii.
Material is closed cell, and insulation fixing materials shall have fire indices ratings not exceeding 0,0,0,0 (Four Zero), be non-hygroscopic, and have a maximum thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/mK at 20 deg. C
iii.
The insulation shall comprise of two half sections with a factory applied reinforced aluminum foil, of flame spread class 0, covering hinging the two half mating sections for ease of installation. The covering shall have a 50 mm side overlap of reinforced aluminum foil to enable the outside surface to be completely sealed. The insulation thermal conductivity shall be equal or less than 0.04 W/m K.
iv.

v.
Thermal insulation of all pipe work exposed to atmosphere, on roof, within plant rooms, in underground trenches and in unconditioned spaces shall be clad with aluminum sheets. The aluminum thickness shall not be less than 1.0 mm on pipes of 150 mm diameter and above and not less than 0.8 mm thick on smaller diameter pipe work. The aluminum sheets shall be overlapped 25 mm at joints and secured at 300 mm centers with 19 mm aluminum straps. Straps shall be secured by stainless steel 19 mm angle-rib clips. Rivets and screws shall not be used to fix the cladding unless means are incorporated to ensure that the duct vapor barrier is not punctured and the method is approved by the Engineer in writing.
vi.
Chilled water pipe work within the building shall not be clad except where specified.
vii.
Chilled water piping sensor, thermometer and other controls and instrumentation pockets shall be insulated as specified to prevent the condensation.
2.4
DOMESTIC WATER PIPE WORK INSULATION a)
Thermal insulation shall be closed cell materials
ii.
The insulation shall be manufacture from long stranded fibers, resin bonded to form sections having uniform density and high compressibility. The preformed rigid insulation outside surface shall be smooth, uniform and unbroken.
iii.
The insulation shall comprise of two half sections with a factory applied reinforced aluminum foil, of flame spread class 0, covering hinging the two half mating sections for ease of installation. The covering shall have a 50 mm side overlap of reinforced aluminum foil to enable the outside surface to be completely sealed.
iv.

Thermal insulation of all pipe work exposed to atmosphere, on roof, within plant rooms, in underground trenches and in unconditioned spaces shall be clad with aluminum sheets. The aluminum thickness shall not be less than 1.0 mm on pipes of 150 mm diameter and above and not less than 0.8 mm thick on smaller diameter pipe work.
REFRIGERATION PIPE WORK INSULATION Thermal insulation shall be pre-formed un-slit foamed class 1 plastic material to suit the size of the pipe. The vapor barrier shall be an integral part of the material. The insulation shall have a thermal conductivity of 0.0375 W/m K and shall be satisfactory for a temperature range of 0 °C to 104 °C without deformation or deterioration. The minimum thickness of the insulation shall be 25 mm.

3 EXECUTION 3.1
STORAGE a)
All thermal insulation material shall be stored in their original packaging in such a manner as to prevent the ingress of dust or moisture. The height of packages shall be restricted to prevent any deformation of preformed rigid sections.
ii.
Flat sheet and rolled metal material used for protective cladding shall be stored away from the ground surface, adequately covered and protected in a manner to prevent damage to the materials.
iii.
All storage areas shall have adequate lighting to allow for the inspection of all materials and should be well ventilated.

EXAMINATION a) ii.
3.3
Verify piping, equipment and ductwork has been tested before applying insulation materials. Verify surfaces are clean and dry, with foreign material removed.
PIPE WORK INSTALLATION a)
ii.
No thermal insulation shall be applied to pipe work prior to witnessing of the pipe work pressure test. Only then, and after a full inspection and approval by the engineer, the insulation could be applied. Thermal insulation shall be applied to: 1.
all pipe work carrying hot fluids in circulation including flanges and bodies of valves on all sizes of pipe work;
2.
external distribution mains and fittings above ground and in ducts, chases and trenches including all valve bodies and flanges
3.
Cold water pipe work, including all valve bodies and flanges, that run above ground external to buildings and run in ducts, chases, roof spaces and elsewhere as indicated, to prevent shedding of condensation.
iii.
For all pipe work clad with aluminum sheets, the sheets shall be overlapped 25 mm at joints and secured at 300 mm centers with 19 mm aluminum straps. Straps shall be secured by stainless steel 19 mm angle-rib clips. Rivets and screws shall not be used to fix the cladding unless means are incorporated to ensure that the duct vapor barrier is not punctured and the method is approved by the Engineer in writing.
iv.
Each pre-formed rigid insulation section shall be but joined to the next using 75 mm wide aluminum tape.
v.
The chrome plated pipe to the plumbing fixtures shall not be insulated.
vi.
Each section of pre-formed insulation shall be screwed to the pipe by one of the following means: 1.
Circumferential tie wires each formed from three turns of wire not less than 1 mm thick, spaced not more than 450 mm apart.
2.
Circumferential bands of non-ferrous metal, plastic fiber or adhesive sheet
3.
Rigid insulation applied to cylinders and flat surfaces shall be secured with non-ferrous metal or plastic fixing
vii.
For all exposed Piping, the insulation and cover seams shall be located in the least visible locations.
viii.
For Insulated pipes conveying fluids below ambient temperature, the entire system shall be insulated including fittings, valves, unions, flanges, strainers, flexible connections, and expansion joints.
ix.
For hot piping conveying fluids over 60 °C, insulate flanges and unions at equipment.
x.
At positions where pipes with unclad insulation pass through pipe sleeves built into slabs, fire walls/barriers and acoustic walls/barriers, insulation will be clad as specified to a distance of 200 mm each side of the pipe sleeves. The gaps between the pipe sleeves and the insulation cladding will be rammed packed with mineral wool and sealed with minimum 12 mm of mastic on both sides.

xi.
Contraction joints shall be included in the insulation at locations subject to the approval of the Engineer and at all expansion fittings. The joint shall be a 12 mm gap between the insulation sections. The gap will be loosely packed with long stranded glass fiber mattress to a thickness 6 mm less than the thickness of the adjacent insulation. The joint sealer as specified will be applied to the joint and finished to match the finish of the adjoining insulation.
xii.
Buried Piping: Insulate only where insulation manufacturer recommends insulation product may be installed in trench, tunnel or direct buried. Install factory fabricated assembly with inner all-purpose service jacket with selfsealing lap, and asphalt impregnated open mesh glass fabric, with 0.025 mm thick aluminum foil sandwiched between three layers of bituminous compound; outer surface faced with polyester film.
xiii.
Factory Insulated Equipment shall not be insulated.
xiv.
Apply insulation close to equipment by grooving, scoring, and beveling insulation. Fasten insulation to equipment with studs, pins, clips, adhesive, wires, or bands.
xv.
Fill joints, cracks, seams, and depressions with bedding compound to form smooth surface. On cold equipment, use vapor retard cement.
xvi.
Finish insulation at supports, protrusions, and interruptions.
xvii.
For equipment in Mechanical Equipment Rooms or Finished Spaces, the finishing and type of jacketing shall be as manufacturer recommendations.
xviii.
Do not insulate over equipment nameplates or any approval stamps.
xix.
3.4
Install insulation for easy removal and replacement without damage for all equipment requiring access for maintenance, repair or Cleaning, when equipment insulation is required. DUCT WORK INSTALLATION a)
Thermal insulation to duct work shall be carried out neatly and to a high grade quality by skilled workers experienced in the trade and strictly in accordance with specifications.
ii.
No thermal insulation shall be applied to any duct work prior to completion of any air leakage testing that is required. Only then, and after a full inspection and approval by the engineer, the insulation could be applied.
iii.
Thermal insulation shall be applied to all supply and return duct work carrying conditioned air through unconditioned area including plant rooms. Thermal insulation shall not be installed on the sections of return air duct work covered with fire resistant cladding.
iv.
Supply duct work carrying conditioned air through conditioned areas shall be insulated, whereas return ducts passing through conditioned areas shall not be insulated unless otherwise stated.
v.
All rectangular duct work shall be insulated with rigid slab, cut to fit so that the top and bottom pieces overlap the sides, bonded to the duct work with adhesive applied in 100 mm band s at 300 mm intervals. On ducts where the width exceeds 900 mm, stickpins shall be used on the underside and sides to prevent any excessive sagging.
vi.
All circular ducts shall be insulated with mineral fiber mat bonded to the ductwork with adhesive applied in 100 mm bands at 300 mm intervals.

vii.
All joints in the thermal insulation shall be fully sealed to maintain continuous vapor barrier throughout by the use of 75 mm wide aluminum duct tape.
viii.
Rivets and screws shall not be used to fix the cladding unless means are incorporated to ensure that the duct vapor barrier is not punctured and the method is approved by the Engineer in writing. Caulked aluminum jacket with seams located on bottom side of horizontal duct section could be used.
ix.
Where ductwork passes though masonry walls, floors and roofs a sheet metal sleeve shall be installed and the gap, equal to the insulation thickness, shall be packed with a load bearing insert with internal vapor seal. The thermal insulation shall be butt jointed to the insert and the joint sealed by the use of 75 mm wide aluminum duct tape. All openings through external walls and roofs shall be fitted with a flashing fixed to ensure water will not enter the insulated space between the duct work and cladding.
x.
All insulation on duct work conveying conditioned air shall have a continuous vapor seal.
xi.
No damage to the insulation shall be allowed and the contractor should hand over the insulation in perfect conditions.
xii.
For all insulated ductwork conveying air below ambient temperature the entire system shall be insulated including fittings, joints, flanges, fire dampers, flexible connections, and expansion joints.

Duct and Plenum Liner Application:

Adhere insulation with adhesive for 100 % coverage.

Secure insulation with mechanical liner fasteners. SMACNA Standards for spacing.

Seal and smooth joints. Seal and coat transverse joints.
4.
Seal liner surface penetrations with adhesive.

Duct dimensions indicated are net inside dimensions required for airflow. Increase duct size to allow for insulation thickness.
All attenuators and diffuser plenums shall be insulated and vapor sealed to the same specification as the duct work connected to them except diffuser plenum boxes specified as having internal acoustic/thermal insulation.
REFRIGERATION PIPE WORK INSTALLATION a)
The suction line from the evaporator to the compressor shall be insulated with foamed plastic as specified previously and shall be protected by vapor barrier which shall not be broken between joints of sectional material or at discontinuities of valves or brackets.
ii.
Where possible the insulation shall be sleeved on the pipes before they are fitted. At all junctions, elbows, valves …etc, insulation shall be carefully cut and fitted to the method recommended by the manufacturer.
iii.
All open edges, joints and the like, shall be sealed with an adhesive as recommended by the insulation manufacturer.
