OVERVIEW This is the time period our instructors at Watts Atelier use to do their demonstrations before students go into a two-and-a-half-hour head drawing. I will have a bit more time to explore all of my fundamental areas, rhythm grids, shadow mapping, edge manipulation, and possibly injecting the middle value #5 into my map. Most of the time should be used to do a more accurate linear lay-in, so don’t get carried away and rush into your dark values. This will simply accentuate your decisions, and you most likely should refrain unless you are incredibly seasoned.

ASSIGNMENT: 20-MINUTE QUICK SKETCHES–MALE
In this exercise, you will now have a whole 20 minutes to accomplish your lay-in. Emphasis should be placed on more advanced shadow mapping, edge manipulation, and more careful placement. Part 1: Watch my video demonstration. Part 2 Look over the PDFs and read over the tips and procedures. Part 3: Try copying my interpretation first as with the 5-minute poses. Then try them again from the photos. Part 4: After completing, you can also use some of the reference for the 5-minute poses and any other time segment. Note: The 20-minute poses are very similar in many ways to the 5 and 10-minute poses. You simply have a bit more leisure time to evaluate your placement and edge mapping. You may also be able to get your middle value #5 placed and the insertion of your darkest dark.
