Introduction Trinity’s groundbreaking Rock & Pop exams or Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals provide an opportunity oppor tunity or rock and pop musicians to gain accredited qualications through perorming careully chosen and arranged songs across the rock and pop genres. This syllabus is valid or the duration o 2012, 201 2, but please check the website regularly or any amendments or updates at www.trinityrock.com www.trinityrock.com These exams have been developed through through a unique partnership with two o the world’ss leading music publishers: Faber Music and Peters Edition London. world’ Available rom Initial to Grade Available G rade 8, the exams are supported by 48 new books which provide essential support or the learner through: sheet music demo and backing tracks on CD background inormation on the songs perormance hints and tips Technical ocus support or Session skills In addition there are many resources being developed online including song downloads, transpositions and additional repertoire. The marks or Song 3 are dierent dierent because higher marks are awarded under Technical Technical Control to refect the three areas o Technical ocus. Trinity Trini ty College London Rock & Pop exams are designed to encourage musical perormances in which the candidate can demonstrate their own personal style and approach.This may involve involv e some fexibility in the interpretation o the written notes, particularly at the higher grades, where consistent and stylish interpretation is encouraged. About the exams Entering for an exam
After the exam
Exams can be taken at Trinity’s international network o centres. Details o closing dates, ees, how to enter, and location o exam venues and centres are available on the website.
Report orms will be released to teachers and candidates as soon as possible. The report orm is a provision provisional al result and may change ollowing moderation.
Special educational needs
Trinity welcomes applications rom those with special Trinity educational needs. It is essential that these th ese are notied at the time o entry by using the special orm available online. Taking the exam
When the exam timetables are prepared, candidates will be sent an appointment slip. This will conrm the t he details o the candidate, grade, and instrument together with the time and place o the exam. Candidates should complete the details o the songs being perormed, the order they will be perormed, and indicate which o the two Session skills will be presented. It is the candidate’s responsibility to hand this completed appointment slip to the examiner at the start o the exam. Examiners
Examiners are careully recruited and trained to conduct the exams in a riendly and proessional manner. Assessments are made using the published criteria and examiners deliver the exams and carry out the assessment o the candidate’s perormances through a air and standardised process. Examiners invite candidates candidates to perorm their set list in their chosen order and administer their chosen Session skills. Examiners will write a report on the candidate’s perormance but will not be able to reveal reveal the outcomee o the assessment at this stage.
Once the results have been processed by Trinity College London through rigorous checking and moderation, certicates are issued or all successul candidates. The exam room
The exam room will be equipped with the ollowing: ampliers suitable or Bass, Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals CD player, speakers/sound system or backing tracks digital piano (contact centre or details ) jack-to-jack and mic leads leads table, chairs and a music stand vocal microphone and adjustable microphone stand adjustable piano stool A good-quality drum kit which comprises: — snare drum with adjustable drum kit size stand stand — toms (three minimum): high/medium/low — bass drum (18–22”) — hi-hat (12–14”) — ride cymbal (18–22”) — crash cymbal (14–18”) A mains power supply will be available at centres; candidates are responsible responsible or the electrical saety o any o their own equipment used in their examination. Two o the songs in each o the Trinity Two Trinity Rock & Pop books are identied as Technical ocus songs. One o these must be chosen or your Song 3. These songs are designed to develop technical skills. Each song has three technical elements specically identied. Guidance on the preparation o these technical skills is included in the books. For the Technical ocus song, higher marks will be awarded under Technical Control to refect the increased emphasis on this area. Examiners will reer to the three technical elements in their comments.

Song 2 must be selected rom the relev relevant ant Trinity Trinity Rock & Pop book (songs are also listed in this syllabus ), or rom www.trinityrock.com. Alternatively, Song 2 can be a sel-chosen song: Sel-chosen song
Candidates may perorm a sel-chosen song. This must conorm to the parameters set out on the website in terms o length and level o diculty. This could be:
I a candidate perorms more than one song that has been designated as a Technical ocus song, then they must select only one o these songs as Song 3.
sheet music rom a printed or online source an original song that the t he candidate has written a song that the th e candidate has arranged (cover version). The song may: be unaccompanied have a backing track (must not include the solo part) – this may be sel-created include (or singers) a live sel-played accompaniment on any instrument include (or instrumentalists ) added vocals perormed live by the candidate. Candidates must provide a (photo)copy o their chosen song or the examiner, with name and candidate number clearly shown. The examiner will retain this copy. Sel-chosen songs may be presented as an original score, handwritten or computer generat g enerated ed in one o the ollowing ormats: a lead sheet with lyrics, chords chords and melody line a chord chart with lyrics a ull score using conventional sta notation.

Choosing songs Repeats, expressive techniques and tempi
Copyright in a song
All songs should be prepared in ull with all repeats, da capo and dal segno instructions and 1st and 2nd time bars observed. Candidates are encouraged to include a range o expressive techniques such as vibrato, slides/glissandi, tapping, grace notes, pitch bend, whammy bar, etc. appropriate to the style o the song, particularly in the higher grades. Candidates should observe terms showing tempo, character and style o the music.
Points to remember: you can create a cover version o a song and perorm it in an exam or other non-public perormance you cannot record a cover version or make recordings available to others (by copying or uploading it to a website) without the appropriate licence you own the copyright o any songs you have written yoursel
Backing tracks
Further inormation is available on the website.
Backing tracks or sel-chosen songs must be o good quality and presented presented on CD or other portable media, e.g. USB stick or MP3 player. These must not include the solo part. Performing from memory
Candidates are ree ree to perorm any or all o their th eir songs rom memory. Music and copies
It is essential that t hat candidates bring an original copy, copy, or an authorised download o the music being perormed into the exam room. I an unauthorised copy is used Trinity may not award marks or that song. Original copies o sel-chosen sheet music can be purchased or downloaded rom music shops and publishers. Proo o purchase will be required or downloads. Allowances cannot be made or delays in obtaining printed music.

Improvising
I you choose Playback, you will be asked to perorm some music you have not seen or heard beore.
I you choose to improvise, you will be asked to improvise in a specied style over a backing track that you have not seen or heard beore.
You will be given a song chart and have 30 seconds to study it or to try out any sections. The examiner will then play the recorded backing track. You should listen to the audio, copying what you hear; you can also read the music rom the song chart. You will hear a series o short melodic phrases or drum grooves and lls, and are required to repeat each o them straight back in turn. A count-in will be given at the beginning o the recordin recording, g, and a backing rhythm will be played throughout. In the exam you will have two chances to play along with the track: rst time – or practice second time – or assessment. No variation or improvisa improvisation tion is required – what is printed on the song chart/heard on the track should be copied as accurately as possible, including any details o phrasing, articulation and dynamics at higher h igher grades.

The examiner will then play the recorded backing track, which consists o a passage o music played on a loop. You should improvise in the given style over the backing track, which will be played our times through beore ading out. Guitar and Keyboards candidates can choose whether to play a lead melodic line, rhythmic rhythmic chords, or a combination comb ination o the two. Keyboards Set-up
In the exam room
Up to and including Grade 5, somebody may assist with set-up. From Grade 6 onwards, candidates can have help carrying the keyboard and stand into the exam room but are then expected to set up without assistance.
Candidates can choose to play standing up or sitting down. The examiner will have all the backing tracks so the candidate’s CD is only required as a back-up copy. At the beginning o the exam, the examiner will play the rst ew bars o the backing track o the rst song as a sound check, and any adjustments to volume, set-up, etc. can be made beore the exam begins.
Types of instrument
There will be a digital keyboard (stage piano) in the exam room with appropriate amplication. Candidates may choose to use this instrument or their own keyboard, as long as this is portable por table and can be set up in the room within three th ree minutes. Candidates may bring any keyboard which can communicate the music successully, including electronic keyboards, synthesisers or digital pianos. Please note that the songs in the Rock & Pop syllabus are designed to be played to the provided backing track, without auto-chord accompaniment and without auto-drum backing rhythms or styles. Portable electronic keyboards must thereore be capable o being played with an independent let hand, i.e. with all autoaccompaniment eatures turned o. Auto-intro/-outro must not be used in any perormance. Keyboards should have the ollowing: at least 61 ull-sized keys a range o individual voices the acility to plug in a sustain pedal (rom Grade 3) 3) ( ) touch sensitivity option rom Grade 3
What to bring to the exam
Essential Keyboard Keyboar d candidates must bring:
an original Trinity Trinity Rock & Pop book with the included CD, and/or authorised download (s) rom the website the completed appointment slip i perorming a sel-chosen song – the original score and one copy plus the backing track (i appropriate) Optional Keyboard Keyboar d candidates may bring: their own keyboard, stand and power pack/mains lead
their own amplier with mains power lead a sustain pedal and/or volume pedal any other equipment required or their perormances
Songs in the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus are designed to be played either as piano style (as on an acoustic piano) or keyboard style, using voice changes, pitch bend, reverb, etc. All songs and tests will be assessed on the musicality o the candidate’s candidate’s perormance and not on the capacity o the instrument itsel.
