Wheel of the Year
9
Samhain Samhain, October 31: Major Sabbat. Samhain marks the end of the summer on the Celtic calendar and the beginning of winter. It’s the Wiccan new year and it’s the time when the veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest. It is a day to honor your ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. At Samhain, the Goddess descends into the underworld and visits the God, who is the Lord of the Underworld. Traditional colors of Samhain are black, brown, and orange.
10
Yule Yule, December 21 or 22: Lesser Sabbat The celebration of the Winter Solstice, the longest night and shortest day of the year. At Yule, the Sun God is reborn/born to the Goddess. This is the start of the waxing year, the time between the winter solstice and the summer solstice. Traditional colors of Yule are red and green.
Imbolc Imbolc, February 2nd: Greater Sabbat. The Goddess returns to the earth for its rebirth as the Maiden Goddess. The God is a young boy and is growing
every day as the sun waxes. Imbolc is a Celtic fire festival and a major Sabbat. It is sacred to the Celtic
11
Goddess Bridget. Imbolc’s traditional colors are red and white.
Ostara Ostara, March 22 or 23: Lesser Sabbat. Ostara is named after the Germanic Goddess of Spring. It is the Spring Equinox, so on this day, day and night are equal. Symbols of the Sabbat are rabbits, eggs, and spring flowers. The rabbit symbolizes fertility. Ostara celebrates rebirth, growth, and fertility. The traditional colors for Ostara are green and pink and any other spring color.
12
Beltane
Beltane, May 1st: Major Sabbat and a Celtic fire festival. Beltane celebrates the marriage of the Goddess and the God. On the Celtic calendar, Beltane is the start of summer. The God is viewed as a grown man and the Goddess as the Maiden. Symbols of Beltane are the bonfires, maypole, and marriage. The veil between the worlds is thin at this time, just like Samhain. The colors of
13
Beltane are reds and spring colors.
14
Litha Litha, June 20th or 21st: Minor Sabbat. Litha is the Summer solstice. It is the longest day of the year and the shortest night. On this day, the God is at his zenith of power. After Litha, the sun will wane each day, and then the year will enter the waning part of the year. The God is now a grown man, a King besides his Queen, the Goddess, who is pregnant and in her Mother form. Colors of Litha are gold and yellow.
Lughnasadh Lughnasadh, August 1st: Major Sabbat. Lughnasadh is the first of the three harvest Sabbats. It is the harvest of grains and corn. It is when the God dies and sacrifices himself for the harvest. The Goddess receives the remaining power from the God to continue the growing of the crops. The God then descends into the underworld to await rebirth at Yule. This
15
Sabbat is sacred to Lugh, the Celtic Sun God, who the Sabbat is named after. The color of this Sabbat is golden brown and yellow.

Casting a Circle I’ve included ‘How to Cast a Circle’ from my other book ‘Wicca: A Year and A Day in Magick: The Complete Beginners Guide’. The circle is a field of energy that keeps energy that you’re using to cast magick or work with the Goddess or God. The circle is always cast in a clockwise formation. It also protects the caster from any negative energy or spirits. When using magick and energy, it attracts spirits. The circle is also created so that it creates a sacred space. Think of it as like a makeshift temple. This sacred space that the circle creates can be set up and taken down anywhere inside and outside. Figure out how large of a space you will need for your ritual or spell work. Usually, the circle should be 9 feet in diameter, but it can be smaller than that. Before you cast your first circle for ritual work, you must first cleanse yourself physically. Take a purifying bath or shower. Visualize all the negativity and the worries of your everyday life being cast away with the water. Then dress in whatever clothing feels comfortable. You may also wear ritual robes. These clothing items are meant to bring you into a ritual state of mind. This is because they are different than your everyday clothes. Then make sure you have all the items you’ll need in the circle. Any offerings to the Gods, tools, and anything else you may require. Once you're in the circle, you will not be leaving until all work within it is complete. When you have all your tools ready, candles and incense should be lit. Place a portion of salt in the water of the chalice then mix it. Walk about the circle clockwise starting in the east, sprinkling water around the space that
21
is to be your circle as you go. Once you have reached the east again, place your water back on your altar in the north. Then take your incense or bell, and walk about the circle the same way you did with the water. Your circle has now been cast twice. The third and most important casting remains. Once you are ready, face the east and use your athame or wand and say, “Lords and Ladies of the Watchtowers of the East, element of Air. I do summon you to witness my rite and to guard the circle.” After saying this make the sign of the pentacle with your athame or wand. This is a what is known as a quart call. Each element has its quarter in the circle that watches over the circle and guards it. Now going clockwise, also known as Deosil. Draw your circle with your athame or wand then face south and invoke the element of fire. Saying, “Lords and Ladies of the Watchtowers of the South, element of Fire. I do summon you to witness my rite and to guard the circle.” Again, make the sign of the pentacle. Then turn to the west continuing to draw the circle with your chosen tool and invoke the element of water saying, “Lords and Ladies of the Watchtowers of the West, element of Water. I do summon you to witness my rite and guard the circle.” Make the sign of the pentacle. Then turn to the north, continuing to draw the circle. Invoke the last element Earth saying, “Lords and Ladies of the watchtowers of the north, element of Earth. I do summon you to witness my rite and to guard the circle.” Then make the sign of the pentacle. After that turn to the east to finish drawing the circle. Your circle has now been cast thrice then you are ready to perform ritual or work magick. Once you have cast the circle, you can also invoke the Goddess and God. You can ask them to help you with you magick or give them thanks and offerings. You can say something as simple as “Oh beautiful and wise Goddess! Oh strong and caring God! Be here with me in my circle to aid and teach me.” After the invocation, you can do any magick you have planned. Once the spell is done, ground yourself by eating. This portion of the ritual is known as cakes and ale. Grounding yourself is critical because ritual and magick work can leave you feeling light-headed and dizzy. Once you have grounded you self, thank the Goddess and God for joining you in the circle. Then facing east, you will begin to close the circle. Facing east, say ”Thank you, Lords and Ladies, of the watchtowers of the east, element of air for watching over my circle. Hail and farewell”. Say this for each element, moving deosil. It’s important to note that some
22
traditional close the circle counter-clockwise, known as Widdershins. One you have reached Earth and thanked the elements, you have closed the circle. Now might be a good time to write down your thought about the ritual if you wish to.

Smudging Smudging can remove negative energy from your house. Smudging is the act of burning sage or other purifying sacred herbs to cast away negative energy and restore balance to an area. Smudging clears away emotional and psychic energies that may linger and cause energy in rooms and also people to change. Such energy shifts can be felt in rooms where two people have recently had an argument. The negative energies that come from the people and the argument linger and cause that ‘heavy’ feeling. You can smudge your home whenever you need it, but the best time is during the waning moon. What you will need: a Sage stick, a fire proof bowl, a feather, and a candle and matches. To light the sage stick, first, you will have to have a candle that is lit already. Then light the sage stick with the candle’s flame. Do not set fire to the stick, but let it smolder. Once it has started to smoke and smolder, then place the stick in the bowl. Then walking clock wise around your home, starting in the north, fan the smoke with the feather around your home. Don’t forget to get the corners, closets, bathrooms and basements and attics of your home. Depending on the size of your home, you should have to use one stick, but if you still have some of the stick left over, extinguish the sage stick, and you can use it again. There are different types of sacred herbs you can use for smudging. Sage isn’t your only option.

Crystal Interview Spell This spell is all about courage and believing in yourself. Once you have programmed the crystals, it will help you to have the confidence you need to stand out in your interview and get hired. What you’ll need: • 1 Tiger’s Eye • 1 Lapis Lazuli • 1 orange candle (the color of courage)
65
Cast your circle and light the orange candle. Then hold both the tiger’s eye and lapis lazuli in your left hand (if you're right-handed; the opposite if you're left handed). Then look at the orange candle visualize your self-being confident and speaking clearly without any signs of hesitation or nervousness in your voice. Continue to visualize and say a word of encouragement to yourself. Something like “I will not let my fear rule me!” or whatever you wish. After you feel you empowered your crystals enough, close the circle.
Crystal Protection Wreath This is a fun spell to do. You can use as many crystals as you want. For this spell, I suggest Tiger’s eye. What you’ll need: • Protection crystals (as many as you want) • 1 wicker wreath (any size you want) • Black ribbon • Wire Gather your materials and then cast your circle. Take your crystals and visualize your home and all who live under its roof protected. Once you feel you have programmed your crystals, then begin to wrap the crystals with the wire. Don’t worry if you have no experience with wire wrapping. Do the best you can to make sure the crystals are not loose enough to fall out.
66
While you wrap the crystals, continue to visualize your home being protected. Next, wrap the other end of the wire to the wreath. When you have finished, wrap the black ribbon around the wreath to cover the wire. Close your circle and hang the wreath next to a door in your home.
Crystal Focus Spell This is a good spell for students and anyone who needs a focus or memory boost. What you’ll need Hematite 4 crystal quartz points Start by casting a circle then take the hematite in your hand and state out loud you purpose. Something like “Because I need to/have to do “blank”, I will stay focused!”. Then put the hematite in the middle of your altar and surround it with the 4 crystal quartz points, with the points facing the hematite. Place your left hand if your right handed (the right hand if you’re left-handed) and feel the energies of the crystals. Visualize energy pouring into the hematite from the crystal points. Then pick up the hematite and close your eyes. Focus on the room around you. Recreate the room your into the smallest detail that you’re able to. Once you feel you have programmed the crystal well enough, your spell is complete, and you can close your circle. Carry the hematite
