Arabic Parts
About The Arabic Parts Many of the formulas are duplicated under different subjects. Some of the subjects have multiple formulas. Some of the formulas with multiple subjects will be listed in multiple places under each individual term; others are listed with all the terms at one location. Eventually, I hope to correct this be adding an index by formula, and breaking out all the individual terms in this alphabetical list. This list includes both modern and ancient parts. Please test both and see which you prefer for your delineations. I give credits for my sources, and they give credits for theirs. I hope later to index these a variety of ways -- by relevant house, by planets/points used in the formula, by formula, modern vs. ancient, who knows what else -- but I felt that this alphabetical list would be most helpful in just getting started. Compiling a large list of this sort can be very confusing in simply handling the large quantity of details. If I have made any typos or errors of transcription, please let me know so I may correct them. Last, but not least, this list is in no way intended to be a recommended list, but rather a comprehensive reference list. (NOTE: This first version of the list does not include Granite's lists of parts for Equinox, Solstice, New or Full Moon charts, or those which are exclusively for crop prognostication or horary charts. If you urgently would like these added to the list, please let me know. If you want to know if these parts for natal and/or horary charts actually work for what they are intended to do, test them out yourself.
Introduction & Brief History The formulae commonly referred to as Lots in astrological parlance are also known as Arabic Parts due to the first popular collection of these formulae from Al-Biruni (b.973 AD). This is widely considered to be a misnomer, since selected formulae and the concept behind the lots were known to have existed at the time of Ptolemy, and as far back as 300 BC and before. The concept is considered to have been developed by the Chaldeans, expanded upon by the Greeks, and only then after an already substantial history being taken up by the medieval Arabs. The most significant historical collections of formulae which have come down to us were those from: • • • • • •
Marcus Manilus, 15? AD. Sidonius Dorotheus, Firmicus Maternus, 334 AD. Al-Biruni, ?1029 AD. Albumasar Guido Bonatus, translated by William Lilly, 1675

Sociological Significance What makes study of the lots most rewarding for me, personally, is their function as a symbolic language showing a glimpse into the culture and times in which the specific formula was created. The very existence of a formula shows that it was considered a fundamental and essential issue for the times in which it was being used. The structure of the formula describes the assumptions and perceptions related to the issue. I would like to give a few examples to demonstrate this concept.
Examples Example One: Parts of Marriage Formulae: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Marriage and Partners: Asc + 7th Cusp - Venus Marriage & Love(I), Asc + Jupiter - Venus (most used) Marriage & Love(II), Asc + Venus - Jupiter Marriage, Fraudulent (and conditions fascilitating it), Asc + Venus - Saturn Marriage of Men(I), Asc + Venus - Saturn (reverse) (most used) Marriage of Men(II), Asc + Venus - Sun Marriage of Women, Asc + Saturn - Venus (reverse) Marriage of Women(II), Asc + Mars - Moon
All formulae use the structure of a personal point, a significator, and a trigger planet. The personal point is usually the Ascendent, since it is the most unique and powerful personal point in an individual's chart. The significator would be the planet or point which symbolically bears most strongly on the issue. The triggering planet or point would be that which symbolically represents the type of behavior or action under discussion. For example, in the first formula above, the Asc represents the person, Venus is love, and the 7th house cusp shows partnerships. Another way of referring to the components of the formula is that given by Robert Granite. "So it is with all the Fortunes: 1) the beginning of the question; 2) the end of the question; and 3) the casting off point, being the celestial body which interferes with the completion." (pg. 4) In his manner of explanation, the same formula would read with the Ascendent again as the individual, the 7th cusp as that which draws the individual toward partnership, and Venus as that which triggers someone toward marriage. All the formulae above are consided ancient formula, and I have not had the opportunity to clarify the specific times that each was first implemented. For this type of interpretation, it is necessary to also be familiar with the accepted symbolism of the various planets at the time in question. I will not devote time to this here, assuming that either the reader already has a basis in astrological symbolism, at least the very rudiments which were commonly expressed in our literary heritage from the Greek myths through Shakespearean references and beyond. Now, for our examples. Note that there are different formulae for men and women. The two formulae for men indicate very different reasons for the marriage. The first formula (#5) would indicate a marriage of duty and obligation, bringing restriction to love. The second formula (#6)
3
shows the individual's personality and will being expressed through love. It is quite interesting that formula #5 for men's marriage (marriage through duty) is the same as that used for fraudulent marriage. #6 has taken on quite a different connotation in contemporary times, and is now used to indicate love and entertainment (Goldstein-Jacobson, The Way of Astrology, 1967), with no overtones of marriage at all. This is an interesting example of the symbolism remaining the same or similar, but the cultural context changing. Please note that the first of the two formulae for women (#7) is the reverse of #5 for men. This shows the woman accepting restriction and duty because of love. Saturn also traditionally represented an older man, while Mars represented the young adult male, as well as sexuality. The second formula for women's marriage (#8) uses Mars. So either the woman would be activating her sexuality (which was only acceptable within marriage) or approaching a young man through her emotions and maternal nature. The formulae for Love and Marriage are of relatively recent origin -- the first time I saw them was in publications from the 1980s. The two formulae are basically the same, except they can't seem to agree on which is the significator and which is the trigger. Again, the reason for each comes down to the symbolic language involved. Jupiter can be read in this context as either legalization or luck. Combined with Venus, it would either be the legalization of love (#2), or lucky in love (#3). Example Two: Part of Cancer This brief example demonstrates the evolution of a critical concept within a culture. This lot refers to the disease of cancer and was conceived and researched by Emylu Landers Hughes, with it being accepted into the wider astrological community with the publication of Ms. Hughes' book on marriage charts (see Sources) in 1986. The disease "Cancer" only was referred to by that name in this century, and could not have had a formula prior to that time. Ms. Hughes gave her reasoning for the formula (Asc + Neptune - Jupiter) as being that Jupiter controls the concepts of expansion and growth (ie. cell growth) and Neptune modifies Juptier's activity to show the confusion of the growth. Note that the reversed formula (Asc + Jupiter - Neptune) is used for depression (contemporary), "behest" / speculation / suicide (all traditional). There is no historical or traditional use for the formula for cancer.
Problems With This Type of Research To examine a lot in its historical context, it is necessary, first, to determine at what point in time a given formula first appeared and became part of common usage. This can be done by referring back to the various compiled lists, their date of publication, and isolating the first time a formula appeared, or the first time a formula was used in reference to a particular issue. Currently, this is a very difficult task, since most of the publications on lots are out of print, or available only in the original language. The contemporary publications do not agree with each other. Many of the publications include errors from copyist along the way, and it is not always clear what the actual formula was, or if it was reversed for a night birth. That is part of the reason for a compiled list such as the one on these pages. Hopefully, as more people use these pages,
4
persons with access to resources other than the ones cited here will contribute clarifications. This would be greatly appreciated.

How to Read These Formulas 1. Names of the planets are spelled out. 2. Asc = Ascendent; MC = Midheaven. Otherwise, house cusps are referred to by a capital letter "H" and the number of the house. This indicates to use the degree on the cusp of that house. 3. A house ruler is indicated by a capital letter "R" and the number of the relevant house. 4. In a few formula, other Arabic parts are used. Usually this will be the Part of Spirit or the Part of Fortune, also known as Pars Fortuna, or simply Fortuna. In these formula, the Part of Fortune is referred to as "Fortuna". The Part of Spirit is referred to as "Spirit". Other Arabic Parts or Lots are referred to as "Part of Blank" or "Lot of Blank," depending on the source. Granite feels very strongly that "Part" is an inaccurate term, and that "Lot" should be used, however most of the other contemporary sources seem to use "Part". To avoid confusion, I tend to use "Part." 5. If you run into a formula which uses an astrological body which is not familiar, check a list of fixed stars to see if one of them bears the same name. NOTE: Depending on your source, different stars may bear the same name. Currently, the only formula which I remember doing this is the Part of Widowhood, using Vindemiatrix, which has been around 9 Libra most of this century. 6. Formulas here assume a day birth. If the chart says to "Reverse" the formula, this means for a night birth to switch added planet/point and the subtracted planet/point. "Day Birth" means simply with the Sun above the Ascendent/Descendent axis, and "Night Birth"
5
would be with the Sun below the Asc/Desc axis. The most prominent example of this type of reversal in a formula is with the Parts of Fortune and Spirit: o Part of Fortune: day birth: Asc + Moon - Sun night birth: Asc + Sun - Moon o Part of Spirit: day birth: Asc + Sun - Moon night birth: Asc + Moon - Sun Calculate both of these out a few times, and you will notice that they are always opposite each other. Makes it simpler. The general rule for reversal is to reverse any formula which uses the Sun or the Moon, since the Sun rules all day births and the Moon rules all night births. Some of the newer fortunes do not use this traditional rule, so test it out for yourself. If one source said to reverse and another did not mention it, I place after the word "reverse" a reference to the source which said to reverse. In general, if there is doubt about whether or not to reverse the formula, I would error on the side of reversal, but would also test the sensitive point for both positions. NOTE: I find it personally very confusing when a formula refers to another formula, and they both say to reverse the formula for a night birth. This seems to be double reversing, and I would very much appreciate additional information on interpreting these from anyone who has used them, finds them helpful, and is fairly confident in interpreting them. For others, I recommend calculating the formula both of the potential ways, and checking both of the sensitive points which result.
How to Calculate the Formulas There are two primary methods: numerical, and spatial. The numerical method is based on inserting the degree of the mentioned planet/point into the formula in the proper place, and completing the calculations. In the numerical method, there are two ways to convert the degrees for calculation. The simplest way is to use the following table to convert the degree to a proper numeral. To do this, use the number given for the relevant sign, then add the actual degree within the sign. This, of course, is based on the 360 degree circle. No number is allowed to go over 360 or below 0. Any number which does, must either have 360 added or subtracted to give a working number which falls within the specified range (0-360). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Aries = 0 Taurus = 30 Gemini = 60 Cancer = 90 Leo = 120 Virgo = 150 Libra = 180 Scorpio = 210
6
9. Sagittarius = 240 10. Capricorn = 270 11. Aquarius = 300 12. Pisces = 330 The traditional way to convert the degrees, and the way I actually learned, is somewhat more cumbersome and confusing for students, given that a single "number" is comprised of portions in several difference bases. I will give a brief example, and leave the details to those who really want to explore the subject. For example, to calculate the Part of Marriage in my chart using the formula Asc + H7 - Venus. Asc = 6 Aries 40 H7 = 6 Libra 40 Venus = 17 Virgo 06 This could be written as: 6 Aries 40 + 6 Libra 40 - 17 Virgo 06. Using the traditional method of calulation, sign is assigned a number of 0-11 on a scale of 12. The degrees remain in a base of 30 (30 degrees per sign), and the seconds of arc are of course 60 per degree. Thus, this could also be written as: 0.06.40 + 6.06.40 - 5.17.06. The trick with this is to remember when moving between signs, degrees, and seconds, to carry and subtract in the appropriate base for that portion of the "number." So, if you add the first two "numbers," the seconds add up to 80; you must subtract 60, leaving 20, and carry the number 1 over to the degree column. The advantage of this method is that you can, without performing the calculations, rapidly get a good idea of the sign and house location of the final result, simply by performing a rough calculation based on the houses, and a bit of the degrees. Naturally, to use in a proper delineation, one must have the accurate result to use with transits, directions, and progressions. (NOTE: Trying to calculate arabic parts is basically useless unless one has a rectified chart for the native.) To perform the same calculation with the simplified approach mentioned above, you would convert the degrees and write the formula like this: 06.40 +186.40 -167.06 No matter, how you write it, any of the numerical approaches to calculation will give the same result: 26.14 0.26.14 26 Aries 14
7
To calculate a formula using a spatial method, also known as the method of the ancients, is very different, and will give different results based on your preferred house system. Be forewarned. A simplistic approach would be to overlay a transparent copy of your chart, with the subtracted planet/point on the natal Asc, and then mark the location of the added planet/point. This is for working purposes only. Since I do not feel secure in my ability to accuractely describe how to properly calculate a part using the spatial method, I gladly refer you to the instruction in Chapter Four, "The Methods," of Granite's book, specifically pages 43-59. Good luck in your explorations!
General Guidelines for Delineation and Interpretation More will be added, as time permits. In the meantime, follow the usual guidelines: • • •
Look at the placement of the part by sign and house. Examine aspects to the part, focusing attention on major Ptolomeic aspects from a planetary body. Use a tight orb.
In addition, remember that the formula are designed to express the symbolic interaction of the components, and that the resulting degree is stimulated by activity regarding those components. This is often a clue to interpretation. As a general rule of thumb, do not use formulas which are not strictly applicable to the question at hand. The exception to this, is when you choose a specific part for study and analysis across the board, and calculate it for all charts you encounter. Last, but far from least, a part may represent any or all of the following: • • • •
The native's attitude toward the subject of the part. The way the subject is expressed in the native's life, including the native's susceptibility to prominence of the topic, or lack of prominence. The way the native behaves or reacts to the part being triggered, or the subject being brought up. The native's hopes, fears, dreams, and so forth regarding the subject.
For example, the Part of Marriage may show whether a person seeks or fears marriage; what they desire in a potential marriage partner; the types of experiences they may have as a married person; and the type of partner they will become while married. Remember that, in theory, every possible topic is represented, and that every part can be expressed in each individual's life. Look at a variety of charts, and try to find what it is which accounts for a part being activated more or less strongly in any one chart. As you begin your study of how to apply arabic parts you may find them only grossly applicable, or in obvious and shallow ways, but as you continue your studies they may bring forth greatly subtlety and richness (as well as accuracy) to your delineations.

Lots/Parts in Prediction According to DeVore: "All these points are susceptible to stimulation or accent by Lunations, Full Moons, and Eclipses on these degrees, and by transit or progression of the planets over the arcs in which they are located. In short they represent just that many added points of sensitivity and receptivity." Please note that the lot or part is not progressed itself, but can be triggered by the progressed planets or angles moving over the sensitive point. In my experience, the lots are most noticeable when triggered by angular movement (conjunction, opposition, squares), and also with the most significance when the movement involves the planets or points included in the formula.
Arabic Parts and a Chart 'Fingerprint' You can get a 'fingerprint' of the overall issues of significance in a chart by running the parts in Astrolog (URL: http://www.astrolog.org/astrolog.htm). Look for those which conjunct a planet or angle. Astrolog doesn't calculate them all, but it is still interesting. I use the Astrolog command: -Pz This will list the Parts for that chart in order astrologically, from Aries to Pisces, making it a very easy thing to locate parts conjunct a planet or angle. Here is one example, the fingerprint for an event chart -- a marriage which resulted in the birth of one son prior to their divorce, April 27, 1991; 7:40 PM CDT; Chicago IL. I have used the same technique with horary and solar return charts with very helpful results. As with reading any of the parts, it helps if one has a poetic mind. For example, with horary, I have sometimes seen the part of Air and Wind conjunct a significator when the weather was terribly windy and became part of the story told by the chart, and other times the Part simply showed that the person represented by the significator had more trouble than usual stopping talking. :-) With solar returns, it can give a feel for the tone of the year, with some themes or issues to be encountered. Here is the fingerprint from a solar return of a young woman who during the year represented became pregnant with her first child out of wedlock during her parents divorce. For this young woman, the effect of becoming pregnant was to turn her life around for the better, encouraging a greater sense of responsibility in her actions. With natal charts, I have found this technique less clear. It can be helpful in adding another dimension to a reading for a new client, but it is difficult to see the influence of the fingerprint over the span of time represented by an entire life.

About The Hyleg as Itself or as the Pars Hyleg (Part of the Hyleg)
Definitions Hyleg. "A Persian term for the prorogator that governs the life of the Native. See Chapt. 2, note 12. Chapt. 2, note 12. "The Latin spelling here is hylech -- from the Arabic hilaj from the Middle Pers. hilak 'let loose' which is a literal translation of the Grk. aphetes. Thus, the "Hyleg" is the prorogator that governs the life of the native." Abu 'Ali Al-Khayyat: The Judgements of the Nativities. Translated with notes by James H. This complexity, combined with the dubious ethics of predicting the length of another person's life, has caused this practice, as well as this set of terms, to be dropped from modern astrological practice." Lewis, James R. The Astrology Encyclopedia Detroit: Visible Ink, 1994, p. 300. Definitions and Related Terms from the Oxford English Dictionary. hileg variant of hyleg, Obs. hyleg hi.leg. Astrol. Also 7 hilege, hylech. [Of obscure origin. In Pers. "This part is the root of the others and is taken by day or night from the degree of the conjunction or prevention which preceded the nativity or the question or the revolution, to the degree of the Moon, and this is then projected from the ascendant." Guido Bonatti's Treatise on the Parts, as it appears in: Zoller, Robert. The Arabic Parts in Astrology: A Lost Key to Prediction. Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions International, (c) 1980, 1989, p. 94.
General Discussion of the Hyleg and the Pars Hyleg, and Their Uses
*** FORTHCOMING *** "We have discussed the first, second, and third parts of the first house. It remains for us to discuss the fourth part, which is called the Part of the Hyleg, or pars hyleg. The ancients did not care to say much regarding this part because it is involved with so many things. But none of them are able to exist without it. But this part is able to exist without them. It is to these things as matter is to form. The ancients would have been able to set forth the doctrine on this is they had so desired, but they set it aside for the reason stated above. This part is the root of the others and is taken by day or night from the degree of the conjunction or prevention which preceded the nativity or the question or the revolution, to the degree of the Moon, and this is then projected from the ascendant. And this part is called the radix vitae [root of life] because it comprehends entirely the whole being of the native or querent or even the revolution, and if it is well disposed, it signifies universally the good "being" of the native and of other matters. However, if it is evilly disposed, it signifies the contrary of the aforesaid." Zoller, Robert. The Arabic Parts in Astrology: A Lost Key to Prediction. Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions International, (c) 1980, 1989, p. 94.

"The first of these is called the part of the hyleg or pars hyleg and it is a matter which the ancient wise men of this science especially observed. They found it reliable. It is taken both by day and night if a nativity, a question, or revolution is conjunctional from the degree of the conjunction; but if it is preventional, it is taken from the degree of the prevention to the Moon, and it is projected from the Ascendant. Albumassar said that this part is directed in the same way as the hyleg is directed. When its direction or profection arrives at the places of the benefics, it signifies good, but when it arrives at the malefics, it signifies evil and impediment and danger to the native or querent or to those whose revolution it is, or even if it is a universal revolution. And this is why many good astrolgers are deceived, because sometimes they see that many adverse situations arise which ought not to according to the hyleg. They considered only the hyleg and did not concern themselves with the pars hyleg. You, however, will not neglect this but always direct the pars hyleg both in nativities and questions and also in revolutions, and you will not err. It has its own significations besides other things which are of great efficacy." Zoller, Robert. The Arabic Parts in Astrology: A Lost Key to Prediction. Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions International, (c) 1980, 1989, p. 121.
Calculating the Pars Hyleg (Part of the Hyleg) The Part of the Hyleg is fairly straightforward. Here is the methodology used to calculate the part for an example birth chart of: 9 Sept 1949; GMT 9.40am; 01 W 31 / 52 N 25 (Coventry, England). +-------<11>14Vir22----<10> 9Leo09-----<9>25Gem43-----------+ | Sun 16Vir22 | Plu 17Leo06 | | | | Jun 23Leo03 | Sat 10Vir27 | | | | | | Mar 1Leo23 | | | | | Ura 4Can35 | | <12> 8Lib30----|-----------------------------|-----22Tau12<8> | Cer 05Lib07 | | POF 20Tau38 | | Mer 13Lib11 | Astrolog 5.40 chart | | | Nep 13Lib52 | Fri Sep 9 1949 9:40am | | | Ven 23Lib43 | ST +00:00, 1:31W 52:20N | | <1>28Lib55-----| UT: 9:40, Sid.T: 8:46 |-----28Ari55<7> | | Regiomontanus Houses | | | | Tropical / Geocentric | | | | Julian Day = 2433168.9028 | | | | | Nod 16Ari50r | <2>22Sco12-----|-----------------------------|----- 8Ari30<6> | | Jup 22Cap29r | | | | Chi 03Sag45 | | | | | Ves 21Sag47 | | | | | | | | Moo 8Ari08 | +-----------25Sag43<3>----- 9Aqu09<4>-----14Pis22<5>--------+

1. Ascendant + Moon - SAN* PREFERRED FORMULA. [Formula from Bonatti, as given in translation included on pages 81-133 of Robert Zoller's book Arabic Parts in Astrology: A Lost Key to Prediction. New York: Inner Traditions, 1980. 2. Asc + New or Full Moon Prior to Birth - Moon [Formula from Robert Hurzt Granite. The Fortunes of Astrology: A New Complete Treatment of the Arabic Parts. San Diego, CA: ACS Publications, 1980.] * SAN = "Syzygy ante nativitatem" (the degree of the previous full or new Moon, whichever is closest to but prior to the birth). NOTE: I would very much like to thank Sandy Curran for her help, discussion, insights, research, etcetera in clarifying which of these formulae is to be preferred in use. 28 LI 53 = ASC + 08 AR 07 = Moon of Native - 14 PI 26 = Full Moon Prior to Birth
Step 1: Convert all degrees to 360 framework. AR TA GE CA LE VI LI SC SA CA AQ PI
= = = = = = = = = = = =
0 / 360 30 60 90 120 150 180 210 240 270 300 330
208:53 = ASC + 008:07 = Moon of Native - 344:26 = Full Moon Prior to Birth
Step 2: Do the math IF NECESSARY bring the final number back to its proper place within a 360 circle by adding or subtracting 360 as appropriate. 208:53 + 008:07 = 216:60 NOTE: The second portion of the number will also need to be brought back within "60", since that is the base for that section of the number. Thus the "60" should really be "1:00", making the number 217:00. For those of you who think mathematically, we actually working with a compound numeral representing two separate bases. Part one of the number (before the ":") is in 360, and part two (after the ":") in 60. This concept is VERY difficult for many of my students,
31
and just giving examples is the only way I've found to explain it. I allocate a "lot" of time to how to calculate lots! 217:00 - 344:26 = ??? Oops! 344 is larger than 217, which would give us a negative number to then place within the 360 degree circle. Personally, I find it simpler to add 360 to the 217, rather than doing the reverse with the negative number later. 577:00 - 344:26 = 232:34
Step 3: Translate back to sign and place in chart. 232:34 = 22 SCO 34 = Pars Hyleg This goes just barely inside the 2nd house of the chart, conjunct the second house cusp.
Pars Hyleg: How Used / Interpretation Now, normally, I have found only conjunctions, oppositions, and squares to the parts to be really felt by the native, but I am not going to argue with Bonatti who knows a great deal more about this than I do. :-) In the text quoted above Bonatti clearly states that, for major parts such as the Pars Hyleg and Fortuna, he uses progressions, directions, and any of the classic aspects. These are normally considered to include the conjunction, opposition, square, trine, and sextile, in rough order of impact. Notice that in this example, the only planetary aspect to the Pars Hyleg is a sextile from Jupiter, although it is also opposed (separating) to the Part of Fortune. These are mixed indicators, generally positive. All applying aspects by direction are to minor bodies (asteroids) and thus not considered. The first directed aspect with a Ptolomeic planetary body is a conjunction to Jupiter. With no major aspects from the Pars Hyleg to a malefic, and without looking at the Alcochodon or other indicators, one would expect this native to live at least until age 75 when the Pars Hyleg would cross the IC, as the first angle touched by the part. Please note, that with the improved understanding of health and medicine we have now, many of the indicators which represented death or disability in the Renaissance and Middle Ages now may indicate merely a health crisis instead.
Calculating the Hyleg OK, you remember I said calculating the Part of the Hyleg was the EASY part? ;-) Here comes the FUN part -- figuring out the REAL Hyleg! The following material is my understanding of the methodology presented by Al-Khayyat (in the James Holden translation). To me, it appeared that Al-Khayatt took some shortcuts in his explanation or made assumption in the understanding of his students. I have attempted to clarify those in a way which made sense to me, however, it may be that my own understanding is flawed. For the serious students of astrology or a person with special interest in the Hyleg, you would of course try to refer to the original source.

NOTE: In the times of Al-Khayyat and those of Heller and Schoener (the translators from Arabic to Latin), the triplicities were handled differently than they are listed in the Ptolomeic chart. For this example, I am using the table as given on this site. You may wish to explore the Chaldean dignities, which are linked on the dignities page at the bottom, and these alternative triplicities from Lee Lehman's site, (http://www.leelehman.com/pages/Triplicity.html). DISCUSSION: Notice that upon the examination of aspects from the lords of the five dignities, it becomes apparent that the Sun is not strongly aspected overall, lending further weight to my decision to keep looking. Examining the other aspects, and seeing that the Sun is badly aspected by both of the major malefics, I am particularly uncomfortable with the idea of selecting it for the Hyleg. Jupiter, the lord of the Sun's term, is in Capricorn in its fall, adding yet more concern. N = Go to #3 3. Evaluate the Moon ==> Go to #3a 3a. Is it in an angular house (1, 4, 7, 10)? of the five dignities, we find that the Moon, while a more likely choice than the Sun, is also not strongly aspected overall. Mars, the lord of the sign, is peregrine (lacking in dignity), again not able to lend much strength to the Moon as a potential Hyleg. The aspect from Jupiter carries the same issues it brought to the Sun, that being Jupiter is in its fall. Technically, Fortuna is an acceptable Hyleg. Since I am not entirely satisfied that it is the best choice, I'll go ahead and complete this with Fortuna, but then return to question 8, and change my answer, continuing with some of the other options which could be considered for the Hyleg. I like this, and feel much more comfortable with the Ascendent as Hyleg than anything else I've seen yet. Given that Venus is the most strongly aspected planet in the chart, I doubt we could find anything better. The only option remaining is the SAN, in Pisces opposed to the Sun. I think I'll stick with the Ascendent. NOTE: Some astrologers say a person may have more than one Hyleg. Personally, I'm not persuaded, however you could certainly try watching this native for transits or progressions to both the Ascendent and Fortuna. Y = Of the lords of the five dignities, the one with the greatest dignity is now considered the Alcochoden ==> Go to #12 12. You have discovered the Hyleg.
The Hyleg In Health If properly calculated, the Hyleg should be the strongest planet or point in the chart, by placement, sign, dignity, and aspect. In this position, it serves almost as the foundation to the house of the self. If the foundation is weakened, the entire house is placed at risk. There are many other analogies that could be given. Remember the Chicago Bulls when Michael Jordan left the team. When you take away the strongest player on the team, how well can the rest of the team perform? So, I recommend strengthening your Hyleg, keeping it happy, especially at times when you particularly feel stressed or vulnerable. Keep your Hyleg strong, and it will provide support and strength to every other aspect of your life. How?, you might ask. What I have found effective is to study the rulerships attributed to the sign and/or planet in question. The example chart used throughout this Hyleg discussion is not a chart for any real person I know of, but a chart given in error on an astrological listserv and which served as an excellent example! For the fictional individual represented by this chart, with both
39
the selected Hyleg (the Ascendent at 28 Libra) and the alternate Hyleg (Fortuna at 20 Taurus), they are both in signs ruled by Venus. I would recommend for this native, at times of life stress or illness, to surround themselves with either the objects or symbols ruled by Venus. For this purpose, it is worth investing in a good book devoted to rulerships! (I like both that by Billings and the one by Lee Lehman.) This person could make a point of: • • • • •
wearing clothing in colors ruled by Venus; wearing jewelry shaped like animals or plants ruled by Libra; wearing jewelry formed of planets or gemstones ruled by Venus; decorating their home or office with artwork representing plants, flowers, or animals ruled by Venus; decorating or surrounding themselves with colors ruled by Venus.
They might also want to consider wearing a Venus amulet or talisman, such as those provided by Christopher Warnock, http://www.renaissanceastrology.com/. Venus and Libra rule, in part: • • • •

Remember, this is an example. If your Hyleg was in Scorpio, for a different example, you might wish to wear Martian or Scorpio-ruled reds and scarab jewelry and taking some leisure time to read a mystery novel. Be sure to examine not just the sign of the Hyleg, but the location of the planet chosen as the Alcochoden, the most dignified planet aspecting the Hyleg. In this chart, Venus is the Alcochoden and conjunct the Ascendent, adding additional weight to strength from Venusian elements and symbols. Here I have been discussing strengthening the Hyleg by the ruler of the sign in which it resides, but examine also its other dignities. In this example chart, the Ascendent and Fortuna carry these other dignities, which might be considered if extra strengthening is required. •

While the essential dignities are not really critical for discussing or calculating Arabic Parts or Lots, they developed around the same time period and give a sense of the strengths of the planets involved. In particular, there are a very few of the formulae for lots for which you have a choice of planets depending on which one is stronger. It is these dignities and debilities which determine that strength. Roughly, the strength of the planet in question is stronger if it is listed towards the top of the Ptolemaic chart. In order of strength, Rule is strongest, followed by the next strongest: Exaltation, etcetera. The last two rows of the same chart are considered debilities, ie. "bad" or "weak". Naturally, actually using these is somewhat more subtle than I have described here, and I encourage all interested readers to refer to other texts on this subject. I can especially recommend anything by Robert Zoller or Anthony Louis (who gives a brief but effective review of the topic). Lehman's book called "Essential Dignities" is masterful, but a challenge to the reader unless they have extensive astrological experience. The Hindu/Chaldean chart at the bottom of the page refers to a historical view of dignities and is not now used in standard practice for the calculation of strength of the planets. It is provided for reference and comparison purposes only.
