BLACK MAGIC AND ITS CURE The subject of the jinn is one which is of i nterest to many people. Folk stories abound, and many superstitious practices have arisen in Muslim cultures with regard to protection against the jinn. Many myths surround the ideas of the evil eye and envy, and there are many strange notions surrounding illnesses such as epilepsy and mental illness, which are often thought of as being caused by the jinn. The jinn are real and they can indeed harm humans, . PRESCRIBED MEANS OF WARDING OFF SIHR(WITCHCRAFT) BEFORE IT HAPPENS: What are the prescribed means of warding off sihr before it happens?. Praise be to Allaah. Among the most important means of warding off the danger of sihr before it happens is seeking protection through the adhkaar (dhikr) prescribed in Islam, maki ng du͛aa͛ and reciting prayers seeking refuge that were narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). These include: 1 ʹ Reciting Aayat al-Kursiy [al-Baqarah 2:255] after every prescribed prayer, after reciting the adhkaar which are prescribed after the salaam. 2 ʹ Reciting Aayat al-Kursiy when going to sleep. This is the greatest aayah in the Qur͛aan, in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): A ͞ llaah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heave ns and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursiy extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great ͟ [al-Baqarah 2:255] 3 ʹ Reciting͞ Qul huwa Allaahu ahad,͞ Qul a͛ oodhu bi Rabb il-Falaq and͞ Qul a͛oodhu bi Rabb il-Naas ͟ ͟ ͟ [i.e., the last three soorahs of the Qur͛aan] following every prescribed prayer, and reciting these three soorahs (three times) at the beginning of the day after Fajr prayer, and at the beginning of the night after Maghrib prayer. 4 ʹ Reciting the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah at the beginning of the night. These are the aayahs in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): T ͞ he Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord , and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) We ͚ make no distinction between one another of His Messengers͛ Ͷ and they say, We hear, and we obey. ͚ (We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).͛ Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, ͚ our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians);
our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Mawlaa (Patron, Supporter and Protector) and give us victory over the disbelieving people ͟ [al-Baqarah 2:285-285] And it was narrated in a saheeh report that the Messenger of Allaah A llaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:͞ Whoever recites Aayat al-Kursiy at night will have ongoing protection from Allaah and no devil will come near him until morning comes. And it was also narrated in a saheeh report that the ͟ Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:͞ Whoever recites the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah at night, that will suffice him. The me meaning aning ʹ and Allaah knows best ʹ is ͟ that that will be sufficient protection for him against all evil. 5 ʹ Seeking re fuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of that which He has created, night and day and when stopping to rest anywhere, be it in the city, in the desert, in the air or on the sea. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:͞ Whoever stops to rest and says, A͛oodhu bi ͚ kalimaat Allaah il-taammah min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of that which He has created),͛ nothing will harm him until he moves on from that place. ͟ 6 ʹ The Muslim should say at the beginning of the day and the beginning of the night (three times): B ͞ ismillaah alladhi laa yadurr ma͛a ismihi shay͛un fi͛l-ardi wa laa fi͛l-samaa͛i wa huwa al-samee͛ ala ͚ leem (In the name of Allaah with Whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing). According to saheeh reports, the Messenge r of Allaah (peace and ͟ blessings of Allaah be upon him) urged us to recite this, and this is a means of keeping safe from all evil. These adhkaar and prayers for refuge are among the greatest means of warding off the evil of sihr (witchcraft) and other evils, for the one who recite s them regularly re gularly with sincerity and faith, putting his trust in Allaah and depending upon Him, and being content with that. They are also some of the most e ffective weapons for warding off sihr after i t has happened, along with humbly beseeching Allaah constantly and asking Him to remove the harm and relieve the distress. Among the du͛aa͛s which have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to treat diseases such as sihr and other things is the ruqyah by means of which he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to treat his companions:͞ Allaahumma Rabb al-naas, adhhib ilba͛s, washfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa͛a illa i lla shifaa͛uka shifaa͛an laa yughaadir saqaman (O Allaah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal him, for You are the Healer and there is no healing except Your healing, with a healing which does not leave any disease behind). There is also the ruqyah by means of ͟ which Jibreel treated the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):͞ Bismillaah urqeeka min kulli shay͛in yu͛dheeka, wa min sharri kulli nafsin aw aynin haasid Allaah yashfeek, bismillaah urqeek (In ͚ the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from every thing that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you). This should ͟ be repeated three times. And Allaah knows best. Majmoo͛ Fataawa wa Maqaalaat al-Shaykh Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him), vol. ͚ ͚ 8
HOW TO PROTECT ONESELF AGAINST THE EVIL EYE: Praise be to Allaah. You should know that hijaab is obligatory, and no one has the right to choose the rulings that they like and leave those for which they feel no inclination, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): O ͞ you who believe! Enter perfectly in Islam (by obeying all the rules and regulations of the Islamic religion) and follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan). Verily, he is to you a plain enemy[al-Baqarah ͟ 2:208] Ibn Katheer said:͞ Allaah commands His believing slaves to adhere to all the rulings and laws of Islam, to follow all the commandments and heed all the prohibitions. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/566). ͟ The believing women are forbidden to show any of the ir beauty to non-mahrams. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ͙͞ and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for ne cessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, headcover, apron), and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband͛s fathers, or their sons, or their husband͛s sons, or their brothers or their brother͛s sons, or their sister͛s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of feminine sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful [al-Noor 24:31] ͟ Obeying Allaah͛s command to observe hijaab will protect you from the ev il eye by Allaah͛s Leave in this world, and will protect you from the punishment of Allaah in the He reafter. With regard to wearing Qur͛aanic verses or certain shapes, Imaam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad from U ͚ qbah ibn Aamir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be ͚ upon him) said:͞ Whoever wears an amulet, may Allaah not fulfil his need, and whoever wears seashells [for protection from the evil eye] may Allaah not protect him. According to another report, a group ͟ came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he accepted the bay͛ah [allegiance] of nine of them, but not from one o f them. They said,͞ O Messenger of Allaah, you accepted the bay͛ah of nine and not from this one. He said,͞ He is wearing an amulet. Then he took it ͟ ͟ in his hand and broke it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) accepted his bay͛ah. He said,͞ Whoever wears an amulet is guilty of shirk. (From Fataawa al-Ayn wa͛l-Hasad, p. 277) ͚ ͟ With regard to dealing with the e vil eye and hasad (destructive envy), there is no doubt that when a person is close to Allaah, always remembering Him (dhikr) and reading Qur͛aan, he is less likely to be affected by the evil eye and other kinds of harm from the devils of mankind and the jinn. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for himself, and the greatest means of seeking refuge that is available to the Muslim is reading the Book of Allaah, above all the Mi͛wadhatayn (the last two Soorahs of the Qur͛aan, al-Falaq and al-Naas), Soorat al-Faatihah and Aayat al-Kursiy [al-Baqarah 2:255].
Among the saheeh du͛aa͛s for refuge that have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are: A ͛͞ oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of that which He has cre ated). ͟ (Narrated by Muslim, al-Dhikr wa͛l-Du͛aa, 4881) It was narrated that Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said:͞ The Prophet (peace and ͚ blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He said: Y ͚ our father [i.e., Ibraaheem] used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa͛ eel and Ishaaq with these words: A͛oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli aynin laammah ͚ (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye).͛(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Ahaadeeth al-Anbiyaa͛, 3120). ͟ With regard to the meaning of laammah (translated here as͞ bad), al-Khattaabi said:͞ What is meant ͟ here is every disease or harm that a person may suffer such as insanity or mental disturbance. ͟ It was narrated from Abu Sa͛eed that Jibreel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said:͞ O Muhammad, are you ill? He said,͞ Yes. He said,͞ Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay͛in ͟ ͟ yu͛dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of ͚ Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you). (Narrated by Muslim, ͟ al-Salaam, 4056) Undoubtedly, when a person persists in reciting the adhkaar (dhikr) for morning and evening, and the adhkaar for going to sleep, and others, this wi ll have a great effect in protecting him from the evil eye, because it will be like a stronghold for him, by Allaah͛ s Leave. So everyone should strive to recite these adhkaar. One of the best treatments is the use of ruqyah, which the Messenger of A llaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) permitted for protection from the evil eye and he instructed people to use it. It was narrated that Aa͛ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said:͞ The Messenger of Allaah (peace ͚ and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded me, or he commanded (the people) to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye. ͟ (narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Tibb, 5297) And it was narrated that Aa͛ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said:͞ The man who cast the evil eye ͚ would be commanded to do wudoo͛, and then the man who was affected would wash himself with (the water). ͟ (Narrated by Abu Dawood, al-Tibb, 3382. Al-Albaani said, in Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood, its isnaad is saheeh. No. 3282) These are some of the du͛aa͛s and treatments which offer protection ʹ by Allaah͛s leave ʹ from the evil eye and from destructive envy (hasad). We ask A llaah to protect us from that. And Allaah knows best. So Here's I 'm Going To Tell You About More Of Black Magic... According To Islam In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful, Black magic (sihr) is something that definitely exists and causes harm to people. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was also afflicted with black magic. A Jew by the name of Labid ibn Asim who outwardly posed to be a believer (munafiq) carr ied out black magic on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace). He took the hair of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and made eleven knots and placed it under a rock in a well called Zarwan. The effect of this was that it created uncertainty in the mind of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to whether he had done or not done certain things (although this had no effect on his religious and prophetic obligations). At times the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & g ive him peace) felt he had acco mplished something yet he had not done so and vice versa. The angel Jibra¶il informed the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to what had occurred and came down with the two Surahs, namely Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) together with the Companions (Allah be pleased with t hem all) went to the well and removed the knotted hair. As each verse was recited, the knots untied miraculously. At the eleventh knot, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was re lieved from the effects of this black magic. (See: Tafisir Ibn Kathir & Ma¶arif al-Qur¶an) Thus, scholars mention that the recitation of the Mu¶awwazatayn (the two Quls: al-Falaq and al Nas) is very beneficial in the removing of and protection from black magic. One should make a habit of reciting these especially when retiring to bed and after the Fardh pra yers. There are many virtues of these two Surahs mentioned in the Ahadith. Sayyida A¶isha (Allah be pleased with her) narrates that whenever the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) would become ill, he would recite the Mu¶awwizat (Surah al-Falaq & Surah an-Nas) and blow over himself. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite these two Surahs (and blow my breath) o ver him and make him rub his body with his own hand, for its blessings.´ (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 4728) Apart from these two Surahs, the recitation of Surah a l-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, and last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah is also very bene ficial. Moreover, the famous Tibi¶i, Ka¶b al-Ahbar (Allah be p leased with him) states: ³Had it not been for the phrases that I recite regularly, the Jews would have turned me into a donkey (m: out of black magic). It was said to him: ³What are these phrases?´ He replied: Transliteration: ³A¶uzu bi wajhillah al-Adhim alladhi laysa shay¶un a¶dha mu minhu wa bi kalimatillah attammati allati la yujawizuhunna barrun wa la fajir wa bi asmaillah al-husna kulliha ma alimtu
minha wa ma lam a¶lam min sharri ma k halaqa wa bara¶a wa zara¶a.´ Translation: ³I seek the protection of Allah the Great; He, than whom there is nothing greater. And I seek the protection of the perfect words of Allah which no man, virtuous or evil, can even transcend; and I seek the protection of all the beautiful names of Allah, those of them which I know and those which I do not know, from the evil of everything He (Allah) created, to which He has given existence, and which He has spread (over the earth or universe).´ (Recorded by Imam Malik in his al-Muwatta, 2/541, no. 2737) Thus, the above supplication can be very beneficial in the re moving of the effect of black magic. Also, the consuming of Ajwa dates has been prescribed by the Messenger o f Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as a remedy for black magic. Amir ibn Sa¶d narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: ³He who eats seven Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.´ (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5130) The above are just some of the methods in removing the effect of black magic that have been prescribed in the Sunnah, thus one may resort to any of them. There are also other remedies besides the above, but time does not allow me to mention them all. Finally Before parting, I would like to state that undoubtedly black magic is so mething that exits, but it is observed that many people experience some type of downfall or illness and quickly jump to the conclusion that somebody has carried out black magic and start pointing fingers at others. If a child refuses to marry someone whom the parents want him/her to marry, then the parents begin to regard it to be the cause of black magic. Similarly, if the relations of the husband and wife turn sour, the first assumption is that it must be black magic that was carried out by such and such person. Black magic is regarded to be the cause behind every minor and major illness. This type of understanding is incorrect. One s hould not be too hasty in concluding that the cause of a problem is black magic, because more often than not, black magic has nothing to do with the problem. Secondly, due to this, many people have made it a business, in that they deceive people in making them believe that they have some sort of black magic done upon them, thus they are charged with a massive sum for the treatment. People have made thousands in this business. Thus, one should be very careful in these matters, for in it rests the benefit of this world a nd the hereafter. Do not be too hasty in determining that the cause behind the pro blem is black magic. However, if there is substantial evidence such as the sudden break of illness, etc, then one may determine whether it is the cause of black magic or otherwise. And in the case o f being afflicted with it, one must primarily turn to Allah Most High and reso rt to the remedies mentioned in the
Qur¶an and Sunnah. Also, if the help of others is sought, then one sho uld only turn to those who are god-fearing and pious. While Muhammad was ruling in Medina a delegation of about 60 Christians from the Najran Valley in North Yemen visited him.1 A bishop and his scholars wanted to know what kind of a spirit Muhammad had. They disputed w ith him in an investigat...ory dialogue for two or t hree days in the mosque (Masjid) at Medina. Muhammad tried greatly to compromise with the Christians in order to win them for Islam without forsaking the principles of his faith. He accept ed essential facts of the life of Christ. Yet he rejected Christ¶s divinity and crucifixion. One can read Muhammad¶s basic answers to the Christians in Sura al-e-Imran 3:33-64 The delegation from Najran would not compromise with Muhammad and deny the Son of God or disown his atoning death on the Cross. Muhammad was upset and said that the Christian and the Muslims should be exposed to the Judgment of Allah immediately. We read in Sura al-eImran 3:61 "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!" Perhaps, Muhammad remembered the Judgment of Yahweh against Korah and his men that occurred during the days of Moses (Numbers.16:1-35). The earth opened up and swallowed the rebels alive. However, there are some critical and fundamental differences. We no longer live under the law of the Old Covenant but are confirmed in the Covenant of Grace by our Lord Jesus Christ. Also, in an Islamic way, Muhammad altered the basis for Yahweh¶s judgment against the men of Korah. The men of Korah were rebelling against the leadership of Moses while the Christians from Najran were making a peaceful inquiry. Yet, Muhammad said, "Let us pray and so lay the curse of Allah upon the ones who lie!" This is a destructive prayer, evoking the curse of Allah. Muslims implement prayers in the form of black magic to injure, damage, kill, or destroy their enemies. This is in complete contrast to command of Jesus who said, But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Matthew 5:44 The curse of Allah dissolves before all who live under the redeeming blood of Jesus . It is essential to remember the extent of what Muhammad did. Not only did he pray for the curse of Allah to be against the Bishop and his men, but he prayed that their sons and wives would be cursed too! Islam tries to harm not only the evangelists, but their wives and children as we ll. Everyone who serves God among Muslims prays and commits all their family members to Jesus every day. They seek their divine care to prevent physical harm as well as spiritual protection for their family¶s faith. The bishop and his delegation did not accept the Muhammad¶s superstition, because Jesus taught Christians not to test God.
Jesus said to him, "On the ot her hand, it is written, 'You shall not put the Lo rd your God to the test.'" Matthew 4:7 But this challenge of Muslims against Christians, according to t he Qur'an, continues even today. Such a prayer duel was renewed in Berlin in 1989! Long letters of curses and even death threats some times reach those who serve God among Muslims. Christianity has a different Spirit as evidenced by the words of the Apostle Paul in Galatians, But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9 Paul did not curse unbelievers or peaceful inquirers, nor did he hate o pposing Jews or Gentiles. He wanted them all to be saved even when they cursed and stoned him. However, Paul fought against was every evil spirit which tried to bring the Church under the bondage of the Law or which sought to diminish the truth of Grace by Faith. The spirit of Islam is a power which, by the revelation of the supposed Angel Gabriel, has brought more than a billion Muslims under the bondage of Islamic Law. By contrast, Christ died upon the Calvary¶s cross for everyone and opened the door of grace and salvation for all humankind. These words from Apostle Paul can be understood as a curse upon the spiritual bondage of Islam, not on the Muslims themselves, but on the evil spirit of hatred and cursing ± may this evil spirit be totally drive it out! Black Magic and evil Jinn both exist in Islam and have been proven by the Quran and Hadith. It is evident from the Qur'an and the Hadith that Jinn are the creations of Allah and are made from Fire. Like Angels they cannot be seen by the norm...al human eye. Because of their fiery nature there are more evil Jinn hence disbelievers and are also referred to as Shaytaans. They can commit havoc if interfered with but generally keep themselves to t hemselves. They live in the world and take their place where it suits them, usually remote areas. Evil Jinn tend to stay in impure places like the to ilets etc. The Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him & g ive him peace) advised the Muslims to pray
µAllahumma Inni A¶oothubika Minal Khuboosi Wal Khabaa¶ith¶ (Oh Allah we ask for your protection from the evil male and female Shaytaans) [Hisn ul Hasin]. Good Muslim Jinn tend to live in isolated places where they can worship Allah without disturbance and this can be in the Masjid, cemeteries, woods etc. Jinn do not generally get involved with the humans unless they are disturbed or powered by the spirits. There are some spiritual scholars who can control Jinn and the Jinn have given Bay¶ah to them but the true scholars do not publicise this fact.
The best protection from evil Jinn is to not go to any false person but to recite the Ayatul Qursi and the 4 Quls (Surahs, Kafiroon, Ikhlas, Falaq & Naas) from the Quran and t his will prevent any Jinn from coming near you. Black Magic - A Myth? Black magic does exist and it was even performed on the Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace).
µA Jew by the name of Labid ibn Asim who outwardly posed to be a believer (Munafiq) carried out black magic on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace). He took the hair of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and made eleven knots and placed it under a rock in a well called Zarwan.
The effect of this was that it created uncertainty in the mind of the Messenger o f Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to whether he had done or not done certain things (although this had no effect on his religious and prophetic obligations)
At times the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & g ive him peace) felt he had acco mplished something yet he had not done so and vice versa. The angel Jibra¶il informed the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as to what had occurred and came down with the two Surahs, namely Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) together with the Companions (Allah be pleased with t hem all) went to the well and removed the knotted hair. As each verse was recited, the knots untied miraculously.
At the eleventh knot, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) was re lieved from the effects of this black magic. [See: Tafsir Ibn Kathir & Ma¶arif al-Qur¶an] The Cure For Black Magic The above teaches us that black magic exists and what the remedy for it is. There are also other remedies for curing black magic as mentioned in the Ahadith: 'Sayyida A¶isha (Allah be pleased with her) narrates:
³Whenever the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) would beco me ill, he would recite the Mu¶awwizat (Surah al-Falaq & Surah an-Nas) and blow over himself. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite these two Surahs (and blow my breath) o ver him and make him rub his body with his own hand, for its blessings.´ [Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 4728] Also, the consuming of Ajwa dates has been prescribed by the Messenger o f Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) as a remedy for black magic. Amir ibn Sa¶d narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him p eace) said: µ³He who eats seven Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.´ [Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5130] Also the use of Taweez (Amulets) is permissible as long as it is written in Arabic and contains vers...es of the Quran and Allah¶s name and this is explained in the famous Ha nafi book of Fiqh as follows:
³Using of amulets (Taweez) will not be permissible if they are written in a non-Arabic language, in that its meaning is unknown. They may consist of black magic, d isbelief or impermissible invocations. However, if they consist of Quranic verses or prescribed supplications (Duas), then there is nothing wrong with using them.´ [Radd al-Muhtar, 6/363] The reason why non-Arabic charms have been forbidden is because one will be unaware of their meaning; hence it may consist of utterances of disbelief, such as seeking the help of the devil and other such matters. Dodgy Peers And Shaykhs? Illiteracy and ignorance is the root to all evil. Many people who are illiterate or ignorant believe that because they may be going through challenging times in their lives they can pick out a scapegoat and therefore blame an outside interference (namely Jinn) for the reasons for the ir problems. When in fact, it is their lack of knowledge or lack of guidance for their children that has led to the problems. They then go to false and ignorant so called Peer/Sufi Babas who speak the language they want to hear and then charge them extremely large fees for the solutions to their problems. Muslims should remember that Allah is the solution to all their problems and items like Taweez can be true but only when made by truly god fearing people of Taqwa and knowledge who themselves are strict practising Muslims and generally NEVER charge for their service. A clear sign of false money-making Taweez is when set charges are placed and are usually
extravagant compared to the service provided and when these facts are advertised by either the TV or leaflets or magazines. May Allah protect us all from these people. One shou ld avoid these false people and instead revert to praying five times a day, recite the Quran and look for the solution by asking Allah for help. All Muslims should be aware that whilst Black Magic exists Allah and His Messengers have also shown us t he remedy for it, which is explained above. How Do You Suss Out Fake Shaykhs/Peers? The only way to recognise false peers is to recognise the true t eachings of Islam and therefore to understand the people who belong to Allah. One of the key aspects of understanding people of Allah is that they will be people who openly and secretly practice the Shariah without caring for the world and its materials. They cannot be people who sit at home and do not attend the Masjids for prayers as this is an obligation for the Muslims. They cannot be people who have no knowledge of the laws of Allah but they are people who practice even the smallest Sunnah of The Prophet of Allah (Allah bless him & g ive him peace). You can recognise fake Shaykhs and peers when you yourself have the understanding of Islam or are closely linked to true scholars and therefore can be guided. So Who¶s A True Shaykh/Peer Then? One must be aware that Only Allah has the power to cure and whilst the pious have the ability to prescribe the methods Allah has shown it is still the will of Allah that makes things happen. A person must be aware that a Peer or Sufi must have four qualities for them to be qualified as a Shaykh: 1. He must be of the correct beliefs of Ahl e Sunnah i.e he must have the true beliefs of the Quran, Sunnah and the consensus of the classical scholars. 2. He must not be an open wrongdoer and therefore must follow the Shariah such as pra ying Salah with congregation, does not perform any wrong acts openly against the Shariah. 3. He must have enough knowledge of the Shariah that he knows the Halal and the Haram and knows basic jurisprudence so that he is aware on how to fulfil his basic obligations. 4. He must be given permission (Ijazah) by his Shaykh and his Shaykh all the way to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) so that true virtue can be obtained. Muslims when faced with problems should first of all check medical opinion and also look at themselves to see whether their upbringing of their children is according to Islam and hence not waste money on false Shaykhs or Peers. People who have had experience w ith such situations have related that the following are among the signs of a person who is possessed by jinn (or Satan): Strong repulsion when hearing Qur͛aan or Aathaan (call for prayers). Episodes of losing c...onsciousness and/or epileptic attacks, especially when Qur͛aan is recited for the
possessed person. Frequent nightmares during sleep. Tendency to avoid people accompanied by out-of-the-norm behavior. The jinn who possesses him might speak when Qur͛aan is recited for the possessed person. Madness, as stated in the Qur͛aan (interpretation of the meaning): "Those who devour usury will not stand except as stands one whom Satan by his touch hath driven to [epileptic] madness ͙"2:275 As for a person struck by magic he might experience the following: Dislike of one͛s spouse, as indicated in the Qur͛aan by the following verse (interpretation of the meaning): "And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife..." (Al-Baqarah, 2:102). Different attitude in the house from that which is outside the house. For example, a person will feel that he is missing his family when is outside the house but when he goes home, love changes quickly to extreme hatred. Inability to have sexual intercourse with one͛s spouse. Frequent miscarriage for pregnant women. Sudden change in behavior wi thout obvious reason. Complete loss of appetite for food. Thinking or imagining one has done something when in reality one has not. Sudden obedience and/or love for a particular person. It should be noted that if a person experiences some of the above symptoms this does not necessarily mean that he is either possessed by a jinn or struck by black magic. It might be due to physiological or psychological reasons. As for curing this condition the following steps are r ecommended: Putting one͛s trust in Allah with sincere belief that He is the only cure for everything. Reading Qur͛aan and known supplications expressing seeking refuge, the most important and effective
of which is sura 113 and 114, Al -Falaq and Al-Naas, which were used to cure the Prophet himself. Surah 112, Al-Ikhlaas, is recommended along with them, as well as the opening chapter of the Qur͛aan, AlFatihah. To cure black magic some have successfully used seven lotus-tree leaves. The leaves should be crushed, then mixed them with water enough for taking a bath. The following verses from the Qur͛aan are then recited: verse Al-Kursi (2:255), surah Al-Kafiroon (109), surah 112, 113, 114; the ve rses which mention magic, which are: in surah Al-Baqarah (2:102), Al-A͛ raaf (3:117-119), Yunus (10:79-82), and Taha (20:65-69). The possessed person drinks some of the water, and the r est is used to give him a bath. Removing the elements of magic as was done by the Prophet when he was struck by black magic by a Jewish man called Lubaid Ben Al-Aasim. ͚ Eating seven Aa͛liya Al-Barniy dates (among the dates of Al -Madinah) first thing in the morning; if not possible, any dates will suffice, by the will of Allaah. Cupping--removing excess blood. Supplications Magic is an old human practice. It is sometimes defined as deception by showing something to an audience, which is contrary to reality. In I slam this is part of magic, which is, however, defined as seeking the help of demons to perform some...thing harmful against somebody. In the light of the above definition, Islam considers m agic to be an act of blasphemy. Thus, the Holy Quran say:
"Suleiman (Solomon) did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved teaching men magic" (2:102) In an authentic saying, the Prophet of Islam p.b.u.h. said: Whoever goes to a fortune teller (a soothe sayer) or a diviner and believes him, has, in fact, disbelieved in what has been revealed to Muhammad. Thus Islam condemns magic- even what is called the horoscope or luck or reading one's palm to foretell the future is also prohibited in Islam. This is based on the belief that no one knows the future or the unseen except God almighty. That is why the Quran asserts that even Muhammad does not know the unseen. Concerning this, it says:
"If I had the knowledge of the unseen, I should have secured abundance for myself, and no evil would
have touched me" (7:188). Again, God is described in the Quran as the knower of the unseen and the manifest (6:73) and as t he holder of the keys of the unseen (6:59). In another tradition, Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. says: "Avoid the seven deadly acts which are: ascribing partners to God, magic, killing the human self which Allah prohibited except with right, eating usury, devouring the orphan's wealth, defecting from the battle-fiel d (without a justified reason) and slandering chaste, unwary believing women. Thus Islam has closed the door for practicing magic, simply because it is against its teachings, and it is deceptive and harmful. Let us now review some of the verses of the Holy Quran that refer to magic: In Chapter two verse 101102, the Quran says:
"And when there came to them a Messenger from Allah confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the scripture threw away the book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know. And they followed what the devils gave out falsely of magic of the reign of Solomon; for Solomon did not disbelieve but the devils disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels Harut and Marut, but neithe r of these two (angles) taught anyone (such things) until they had said: we are only for trial, so don't disbelieve. And from them (magicians) people learn that through which they would cause separation betwe en a person and his spouse, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's le ave; and they learn that which harms them rather than profits them. And indeed they knew that its practitioner would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their own selve s if they but knew" (2:101-2). Although Solomon was the Prophet and Messenger of God, he was a ccused by some of his opponents to be practicing magic. Those who claimed this could not distinguish between m agic and miracles. Almost all messengers of God were granted miracles as a proof of their authenticity. To name only a few: Moses was granted the staff by which he could divide the sea and make water gush from rocks. Abraham was flung in the middle of a huge rag ing fire, which Allah made cool and peaceful to him. Je sus Christ could heal the blind and the leper and bring back the dead to life. If we contemplate these acts we find that miracles are totally different from magic. While magic is always harmful, miracles are useful. Magic is from devils while miracles are from God. When these divine miracles are rejected other miracles are imposed to inflict severe punishments on rejecters. On the other hand, miracles are real while magic is sometimes deceptive. It may be said that the Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. was himself exposed to the effect of magic. How could you explain this? This is true; but God saved him from the spell of magic through the repeated
remembrance of God and the recitation of some chapters and verses of the Holy Quran. This took place to confirm the humility of Muhammad p.b.u.h. who was a human like other humans. This made it easier for his followers to imitate him. Two questions are pertinent in context: How to protect one's self from magic? And how to treat a person under the spell of magic? Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. provided us with the recipe through which we can protect ourselves from magic. We shall be immune from magic if we recite - after the five daily prayers - the last three chapters of the Holy Quran which are number 112, 113 and 114 And here is their translation: (112) Unity
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
... Say: He is Allah, the One! Allah, the eternally besought of all! He begets not nor was begotten. And there is none comparable unto Him. (113) Daybreak In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful
Say I seek refuge in the in the Lord of daybreak From the evil of that which he created; From the evil of the darkness when it is intense, and from the evil of malignant w itchcraft, And from the evil of the envious when he envies. (114) Mankind In the name of Allah the beneficent, the Merciful
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The King of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the sneaking whisper, Who whispers in the hearts of mankind, Of the jinn and of mankind. These chapters are also recommended to be recited three times after the dawn p rayer and three times after the sunset prayer. Secondly Prophet Mohammed p.b.u.h. encouraged us to recite the greatest verse in the Quran called the verse of the Throne, translated as follows:
"Allah! There is no God save Him, the Alive, and the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. Unto Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedes with Him save by H is leave? He knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save w hat He will. His chair encompasses the heavens and t he earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the sublime, the Tremendous" (2:225). This verse should be recited after each and every one of the five daily prayers and before going to bed. The Prophet p.b.u.h. also encouraged us Muslims to recite the last two verses of Chapter two at the beginning of every night whose translation is as follows:
"The Messenger believes in that which has been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah and His angles and His scriptures and His messengers and they say: We hear, and we obey. (Grant us) Your forgiveness, our Lord. Unto you is the journeying" (2:285).
"Allah tasks not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it has ear ned, and against it (only) that which it has deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as you did lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us. You are our Patron; so grant us victory over the disbelieving folk" (2:286). Prophet Mohammed p.b.u.h. said: (whoever recites the last two verses of the chapter called the Cow, they will suffice him). This means that the y will protect him from every evil. Again seeking refuge in Allah and remembering his name is an effective protection against a ll evils including magic. Two main supplications are recommended in this respect. They are: 1. I seek refuge in the co mplete words of Allah from the evils of what He creat ed; 2. In the name of Allah through whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause any harm.
If these two prayers are recited three times in the beginning of the day and in the beginning of the night, then no harm or evil will approach the reciter by the grace of Allah (S.W.T). It remains to mention how we can treat a person under the spell of magic. It is possible, on the one hand, to learn magic so that one can use the same tactics. All in all, the best cure is to recite the Quran and seek God's help. For thousands of years people have been fascinated, awed and fearful at the unknown and mystical, being heedless of the dangers and harm that they inflict. As Muslims it is imperative to understand these evil-filled practices and to protect... ourselves from them. Magic Having the power to do supernatural and seemingly impossible things is referred to as 'magic'. It can be categorized as either sorcery, which is magic that uses the power of evil spirits for evil purposes; or as illusionism, which is the skill of performing tricks in which you seem to make things appear, disappear or change, as if by magic. Ruling Both sorcery and illusionism are unlawful in Islam. Sorcery can only be performed with the aid of devils whose help is attained when the performer attributes them as partners to Allah in worship. Illusionism does not involve polytheism, but may none-the-less lead one astray. It is a sin because it implies an act of disobedience. Magic is a destructive act, and therefore Islam warns against it. Believers should avoid magic and magicians; take precautions to heed the danger they represent and attempt to expose their false allegations. The following evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah has asserted this ruling. Allah says: 'And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their own selves, if they but knew.' [The Qur'an 2:102] Abu Hurairah, radhiallahu anhu, related that 'The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, said: 'Avoid seven most dangerous things.' The Companions asked: 'O Messenger of Allah! What are these things' He, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, answered: 'Making anyone or any thing a partner of Allah; practicing magic; killing a living being whose life has been declared sacred by Allah without justification; practicing usury; misappropriating the property of an orphan; running away from the infidels in a battle; and slandering chaste, innocent,
believing women.' (Bukhari and Muslim) Ordained Punishment According to Islamic law, the penalty that awaits every sorcerer is death. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, said: 'Kill every sorcerer, for this is the punishment ordained by Allah.' Umar ibn al-Khattab sent messages to his viceroys in those countries under Islamic rule ordering them to kill all sorcerers. This was later confirmed by Uthman Ibn Affan, Hafsah Bint Umar, Abdullah Ibn Umar, and Jundub Ibn A bdullah, radhiallahu anhum. Fact or Fiction An illusion has an effect on the onlookers that seemingl y make things or happen when in reality, they do not. Musa, alayhes salam, said: 'Nay, throw you (first)! Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast.' (Qur'an 20: 66). Spells can have a genuine effect that can manipulate the body; even to the extent that it can cause sexual impotence. It may also make the affected person go insane, as it disturbs the emotional balance. Allah says in the Qur'an: ' And from these (angels) people learn that by which they ca use separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone exc ept by Allah's leave.' (2: 102) Breaking a Magic Spell The best way to break a spell is by reciting assigned verses from the Qur'an and to utter specific invocations specially worded by the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam. Another allowable method would be to use medicines lawfully prescribed for the particular case under exami nation. What is unlawful, however is to use magic as a means to break a spell because this is likely to be done by the aid of devils. Protection From Magic Holding fast to Allah, seeking refuge with Him and putting trust in Him, can attain protection from magic. Also, we should do what is right in the sight of Allah, and turn away from sin. But more specifically w e can recite the following verses and sayings: Whoever recites verse 255 of the Surah of al-Baqarah (No 2) before going to bed, Allah sends him a keeper that protects him against the devils until he wakes up. Recite verses 285 and 286 of the Surah of al-Baqarah.
Say: 'I seek refuge with Allah?s perfect words from the evil of what He has created.' Say the following three times: 'In the name of Allah, Whose mention is a protection against whatsoever harm is on the Earth or in the Heavens. Verily, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.'
Fortune-Telling Fortune-telling is the belief that some people possess the ability of telling other people what will happen to them in the future by using magical or mystical methods. These rulings also apply to people who claim knowledge of... the unseen, such as geomancers, palmists, shell-diviners, etc. A fortune-teller uses devils who eavesdrop in the Heave ns; Allah says in the Qur'an: 'Shall I inform you (O people!) Upon whom the devils) descend' They descend on every lying, sinful person. Who lends an ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the Unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars.' (26:221-223) This knowledge of what the angels may have said is then passed to the people who are often prepared to believe what the fortune-teller says. The problem is that what people believe is true, has been embellished or changed, omitting the truth. Ruling: Fortune-telling is considered 'Shirk Akbar' (the major and serious for m of polytheism) for two reasons. First, it implies the acquisition of knowledge of the Unseen, which is unique to Allah, (alone). 'Say: 'None in the Heaven and the Earth knows the Ghaib (unseen) except Allah, nor can they perceive when they shall be resurrected.' (Qur?an 27: 65). This means that any one who believes that he possesses such knowledge is certainly claiming the acquisition of a Divine attribute that Allah (alone) possesses. Second, it involves using devils and holding fast to them, a ritual that can only be perfected when the performer is in complete submission to that damned species. This is a form of polytheism. The Danger of Attending Fortune-Telling Assemblies In recent years, the number o f fortune-tellers has dramatically increased, only being outnumbered by those who attend their assemblies and believe what they are told. Some people are fascinated and impressed by observing those who cannot miss the opportunity to make fortunes out of imparting their fabrications. People who attend fortune-telling assemblies are divided into three groups:
Those who go to fortune-tellers to ask them about the future without truly believing in their falsehoods and without having the slightest intention of disclosing their falsehood to the public. Peo ple in this group are sinful and their prayers are not accepted for forty days. Those who believe in the prophecies of the fortune-tellers and go to ask them about the future. These people are regarded as disbelievers since they deny the truthfulness of the Qur'an: 'Say: None in the Hea vens and the Earth Knows the Ghaib (Unseen) except Allah.' (27: 65) Those who go to fortune-tellers and only ask them in order to examine the truthfulness of their prophecies; then disclose their deceit to the p ublic. These types of people publicize that fortune-tellers only offer misguidance that can make believers go astray. However, if someone uncertain that he is capable to take on such a task and accomplish it perfectly, he should not attempt it. Such a weighty undertaking could pose a risk to himself, and result in failure that may likely tempt peo ple even further. Thanks ALLAH HAFIZ!!!
