ဏ (ignore ဏ) is found only in a few fe w Mon loan words from Pali but ; medial က (ignore က) is happily ု ် ် , သ ု ် ် , etc. In Mon Reader က used in many words, e.g., ကိပု ် သ ိ ပု ် , ခ ာ် ် , ေခာင ် ်, ပဲ , ပဵ ု, ဖိ က ဴ , သိ က (ignore က) has been regarded as a medial but in the Myanmar Unicode Standard, Standard, it is said to be just a subscript letter. Both ဏ (ignore ဏ) and က (ignore က) seem to be the same in appearance while old Mons had been using them in the same way. They simply write as the way the words sound but mostly without trying to transcribe them correctly. Those who can speak better English (better Thai or Burmese) transcribe the words from respective tongue just the way they are pronounced in the language by its own native speakers. For example: Mons currently staying in the western countries write the word Canada as it sounds in English, E nglish, which reads ခါဏာဒါ khanada in Mon while almost every Mon in Monland (Mon State of Burma) simply call and write it as ကေနတာ kaneda , which seems to be borrowed b orrowed via Burmese. The former one, i.e. ခါဏာဒါ can also be pronounced p ronounced as khanadé according to the reading rule. Those who do not speak good English (Thai or Burmese) are not able to transcribe the sounds of the words correctly, instead they write just the way they hear it (maybe from Burmese or Thai) or just the way they speak it. I have already got an idea for a coming-soon STANDARD MON WRITING SYSTEM. We would use both transliteration and transcription apart from translation and new-words formation (or creation) methods when we borrow new words from some foreign languages. This means that we care about not only the sounds of the original words but also their formations, how consonants and vowels are put together to form the words. In I n this case, it helps to look back the history of Mon writing. How did old Mons borrow words from Indians, Khmers, Burmese, Arabs, Malay, etc? The ways how foreign words have been loaned by Burmese are also helping hands in making a standard system for Mon writing. Did you notice a small character above in the very first word and a nd above in the third word? It tells you not to pronounce the letter with it. In Burmese and Mon, a similar character is also used but not for fo r silent letters just for cutting the vowel sounds of the letters, which is known as Asat/Gachot (or Killer).
