Co"rt$ards and 9ardens: The India international centre is concei6ed as a desi#n o3 interrelated interior and shaded s%aces, co"rt/$ards and #ardens. !elati6el$ co%act interiors e%and o"t to and o?er a ha6en 3ro the lar#er
o"tdoor s%aces in wa$s which de%end on the sched"le o3 acti6ities o3 the centre, the tie o3 da$, and the season. Each co"rt$ard and #arden at the IIC has a di?erent 3"nction and as%ect. The 4rst or the entrance co"rt %ro6ides access on north side to the #"est roos, and on the so"th to the a"ditori" and %ro#ra. The rear holds #ardens 3or dinin# and in3oral eetin#s "nder the shade o3 the trees near the 3o"ntain and the %ool.
@ostel in#: The hostel win# ho"sin# a lo"n#e, rece%tion and accoodation 3acilities o3 #"est roos, is %laced on the northern side o3 the site #i6in# s%ectac"lar 6iews o3 Lodhi #ardens, and is connected to it 7$ %er#ola sha%ed corridor. The ain entrance to this win# is 3ro so"thern side 7$ 6a"lted corridor connectin# %ro#ra win# and %ar5in# on eastern side. 9"est !oos: Two t$%es o3 roos 7oth sin#le G) and do"7le '' are %ro6ided .The centrall$ located entrance lo77$ di6ides the hostel into east win# and west win#. A li3t and staircase lin5s it to the "%%er oor. The east win# has sin#le seated roos ser6ed 7$ do"7l$ loaded corridor on #ro"nd and 4rst oor. The western win# is raised on stilts. >n 4rst and second oor do"7le seated roos ha6e 7een %ro6ided. The s%ace on #ro"nd 7ein# "tilied 3or holdin# in3oral disc"ssion and 7"?et 3"nction. This s%ace o6erloo5s the water 7od$ on one side and co"rt on other. The hostel win# is well lin5ed with lin5 7loc5%erated lo"6ers %i6ot literall$ to 7loc5 o"t western s"n which can otherwise 7e slid 6erticall$ o"t o3 the wa$ into a %oc5et 3or clear 6iews o"t to the #arden. A7o6e ain dinin# is a hea#onal con3erence roo 3or H. It has icro%hone 3acilities. It has hea#onal hollow ta7le 3or central con3erences. Its slo%in# roo3 has 7een treated internall$ with straw 7oard and #laed with tinted #lass. Str"ct"re and =aterials: =assi6e aterials anchor the 7"ildin#s to the #ro"nd, while li#hter aterials and ore delicate constr"ctions eet the s5$. The concrete 3rae is 4lled in with se6eral t$%es o3 claddin# local stone, %re/cast concrete %anels, windows and shadin# de6ices o3 6ario"s sies, aterials and de#rees o3 o%era7ilit$, in an atte%t to aiie an a%%reciation o3 the indoor & o"tdoor relationshi%s and %artic"lar 2"alities o3 site. Shadin# De6ices: De%endin# on the tas5 at hand, the shadin# de6ices at the IIC ran#e 3ro relati6el$ onolithic s"nshields, li5e the %re/cast 6a"ltin# 3or the entr$ %ortico and roo3to% %er#olas, to an o%era7le li#htwei#ht de6ice the 6ertical slidin# window lo"6ers in the dinin# roo. The ost %recisel$ detailed and coordinate o3 the de6ices are the desi#ns 3or the 8aali and the 6ertical slidin# lo"6ers.
B"ildin# En6ironent In consonance with its o78ecti6es, the 7"ildin#s o3 the Centre are located in an ideal en6ironent. Sit"ated in New Delhi, the Centre is ad8acent to the Lodi #ardens o6erloo5in# a a#ni4cent landsca%e o3 #ardens and historic on"ents 3ro the siteenth cent"r$. The India International Centre was the 4rst aon# se6en instit"tional %ro8ects in this area s"ch as the +ord +o"ndation and orld ide +"nd 3or Nat"re, each desi#ned 7$ Jose%h Allen Stein and laid o"t li5e an in3oral ca%"s o3 architect"ral s%aces. The Centre retains its own distincti6e character o3 a #reen oasis aidst the newer 7"ildin#s in Lodi Estate. In the h"rried %ace o3
li3e it i%arts a sense o3 leis"re, with the 7"ildin#s o%enin# into o"ter and inner co"rt$ards, lawns and owerin# trees and %ools o3 still water. Three se%arate win#s o3 the IIC co%le are desi#ned to reect the di?erent 3"nctional as%ects o3 the Centre. A #rand central %ortico #reets the 6isitor at the entrance dri6ewa$, etendin# across a north/so"th ais. Each co"rt$ard and each win# ser6es a di?erent %"r%ose. !esidential roos in the north win#, the dinin# areas in the west and the third co%le o3 the li7rar$, a"ditori" and adinistrati6e o0ces in the so"th win#, are connected to each other 7$ wal5wa$s with o6erhan#in# ea6es.!es%ectin# the #arden traditions o3 north India and the re4neent o4ndi#eno"s techni2"es, Stein inte#rated these eleents with the odern "seo3 e%osed concrete and assi6e %iers and e%osed roo3 %atterns. The "se oocal aterials s"ch as r"##ed 2"artite stone and 7l"e otah oorin# isso3tened 7$ screened 8alis in ceraic 7l"e tiles which resonate with theintricate %atterns 3o"nd in Islaic architect"re.A"sterit$ and si%licit$ co7ine with intricate detailin#, to 7rin# a sense o3re%ose at the Centre. Des%ite its instit"tional role the architect concei6ed theIIC co%le as an in3oral a%%roach. The 7"ildin#s res%ond with sensiti6it$to their s%eci4c location in Delhi.The c"r6in# 3aade o3 the residential win# corres%onds to the c"r6in# %athsand wal5wa$s in the ad8acent Lodi #ardens. ;lannin# , Circ"lation and +"nctions The ca%"s is concei6ed as an interconnected networ5 o%en s%aces and the screened co"rt$ard 3ored 7$ t"rnin# the 7loc5 so that there is contin"o"s o6eent o3 air within the 7"ildin#. @ei#ht o3 the 7"ildin# is restricted to '/H stories/ considerin# %h$sical scale o3 the 7"ildin#. The I@C co%rises o3 se6eral s%aces with 6aried 3"nctions, each area with its s%eci4c 3"nction is in haron$ with the other areas, the 7"ildin# is di6ided into two 7loc5s P north 7loc5 and so"th 7loc5. The centre has three entrances a7"tin# its 7o"ndariesQ the con6ention centre 7loc5 has its own dedicated entrance. North 7loc5 is recessed 7ehind to two re#"lar 7loc5s to a6oid direct ra$s o3 North est s"n. To red"ce heat load, ini" e%os"re has 7een %ro6ided on east and west side and hence, western side has 6er$ 3ew windows.
