A floor slab in a building where stability is provided by shear walls is divided into bays as shown in Figure 1. The slab is to be without drops and is supported by columns with heads. The building height is 35.0 m, with floor to floor height of 3.5 m. The exposure condition is mild while the fire resistance is taken to be half an hour. The design data is as follows: Loads -Imposed load on floor slab -Floor finishes, screed, partitions, and finishes -Density of concrete -Basic wind speed, V
= 5.0 kN/m 2 = 2.5 kN/m 2 = 24.0 kN/m = 42 m/s
Characteristic strength of materials -Characteristic strength of concrete, f cu -Characteristic strength of steel, f y, f yv
= 30 N/mm 2 = 460/250 N/mm

Size of members and specifications -Slab thickness = 250 mm -Concrete cover for slab = 30 mm -Concrete cover for columns and shear walls = 40 mm -Size of columns = 500 x 500 mm -Wall thickness = 200 mm -Provide any other assumptions deemed necessary for carrying out your design Tasks: (1) Estimate suitable element dimensions (5%) (2) (i) Design the typical flat slab, use special design paper, both the interior and exterior panels to support the live load (25%) (ii) Prepare structural drawings ( in AUTOCAD format) showing the reinforcement details in plan and sections, at column and middle strips (15%) (3) (i) Design the shear wall marked A use special design paper -, assuming that the vertical floor loads are uniformly distributed along the wall axis. For lateral loads refer CP 3 or BS 6399 Part 2. (25%) (ii) Prepare structural drawings for just three storey showing the reinforcement sectional plan and elevation details for the shear wall marked A in AUTOCAD format (15%) (4) Prepare bar bending schedules for the slab and shear wall in Professional Spreadsheet (10%) (5) Well detailed and arranged project will be awarded (5%)
Total points equal 100% (carrying a weight of 40% of the course work i.e continous assessment). 2
