Tools Play an
Important
Role in the Elevator Industry Every worker needs tools to perform his or her job. The vertical transportation industry is no different. Whether the worker manufactures components in a factory, installs elevators and escalators in the field or maintains the equipment in top working condition, each has tools to make the job more efficient and safer. Some of these tools are used by the engineers who design systems, the consultants who offer their advice and/or the inspectors who ensure that the systems run properly. In this special section, ELEVATOR WORLD looks at many of the tools that the industry uses. Some of these are provided by the companies that employ the workers and others are acquired by the worker to perform his or her responsibilities. As a rule, these tools are not actually part of vertical transportation, and a few are unique to the industry. The vertical transportation industry’s tools of the trade range from the common place (such as screwdrivers, drills and saws) to those relating to jobsite locations (such as safety harnesses, hardhats and steel-toed boots) to the specialized (such as electricity meters, test weights and rail gauges). From the beginning of the industry, when men and women first devised ways of lifting objects (and themselves) off the ground, they needed tools to complete their tasks. Whether those devices were simple hammers and chisels or a fulcrum and lever, the work was best done with the proper tools. As the industry progressed

and equipment became more complicated (such as the “safety elevator” developed in the 19th century or the more recent “destination dispatch”), the tools used to produce, maintain and modernize elevators and escalators had to become more sophisticated. In addition, concern for the safety of the riding public has grown over the years. No longer could an installer look up an elevator shaft and determine alignment by simply “eyeballing” the hoistway. The relatively simple mechanical devices used to control the equipment have been supplemented by, and some cases replaced by, computerized and electronic devices that require whole new generations of tools. In addition to computerization, other technology has influenced tools and how they are constructed. The science of ergonomics has produced belts that support the back when lifting heavy objects and screwdrivers with cushioned handles for better gripping. Improvements in communications have resulted in remote monitoring, global positioning systems and almost instant transmission of blueprints and other data. Ultimately, the success of any industry product or project depends on the skills, knowledge and attention of the worker. As the old adage states, “It’s a poor craftsmen who blames his tools.” However, the correct tool, properly maintained, makes every job safer, easier and quicker to complete.

In the elevator industry, as in most others, the products and technologies that most often grab and dominate the headlines of trade publications and are the topics of discussion at conferences and tradeshows are typically those revolving around the final product; machine-roomless (MRL) elevators, new suspension-rope materials, advanced controllers and more intelligent traffic dispatching. However, while these are the products that often showcase the latest technologies applied to our industry for the casual observer, there is an oft-overlooked area where new technologies are also applied in our industry: our tools of the trade. In order to keep up with the advances and new developments in the end-use products of our industry, the tools to install, maintain and service these products must also continuously improve and advance. Innovation, efficiency and safety have been the main drivers behind these improvements and advancements in the elevator industry, and their effect on the tools in our industry is what we aim to discuss. As innovation has driven the advancement of elevator systems, our industry is faced with the reality that job conditions and challenges are constantly changing. For instance, with the advent of MRL elevators, the disappearance of the machine room has caused many a field technician trouble with issues of dropping plumb lines for rail alignment, hoisting machines into the typically very small machine space and positioning the controller. At Wurtec, we have been addressing these issues and have developed a tool for dropping lines from the top-floor landing.

With a wide variety of adjustments and solid anchor points, it is now possible to quickly and accurately drop lines from nearly the top of the hoistway. Along the same vein, there is a variety of options for hoisting in tight spaces, including a 10,000-lb.-capacity hoist plate that can be shelled to the hoistway wall offering hoisting points wherever it can be mounted. With innovation driving product design and constantly leading to higher-performing elevator systems, ride quality in elevators has gained increased focus as of late. With the latest building boom, the desire to travel faster and more comfortably has grown substantially along with the desire to install the equipment more efficiently. As a result, the need for precision on these systems has been steadily increasing. To address this, laser systems that allow precise jobsite surveying and proper alignment of “king” and subsequent rail sections in an efficient and cost-effective manner have been implemented.

One of the staples of the Wurtec tools product line (and a product that is known to increase efficiency over many other methods) has been the False-Car rail installation system. Eliminating the need for scaffolding and typically practical for installations of five stories or more, the fully adjustable (in distance between guides and depth dimensions) False-Car allows for quick installation of rails in the hoistway. It does this by providing the mechanic with a platform that can be powered up and down in the hoistway using a cable climber. Perhaps most importantly, in contrast to the “car-sling” method of rail installation, the False-Car allows rails to be installed prior to the general contractor’s completion of the hoistway or provision of permanent power. By allowing jobsite construction of t he elevator to begin as early as possible, productivity is enhanced and job-completion schedules can be met with greater ease. As the False-Car system has steadily become more popular, one drawback that has consistently been mentioned is the need for building a wooden platform on which to ride. This has been addressed recently with the development of a patent-pending adjustable Continued aluminum platform frame.

Furthermore, precisely manufactured tools holding tighter tolerances have been developed for rail and rail joint alignment, sill-leveling, jamb alignment, the “facing” of rails and plumbing hydraulic jacks, t o name just a few. This constant innovation in product development has allowed elevator manufacturers and contractors to continually differentiate themselves from their competition. However, it is their ability to efficiently install and service these products, thereby reducing the total cost of the product to the customer, which wins many jobs at the end of the day. Put simply, in conjunction with a welldesigned quality product, the faster, easier and more efficiently an elevator can be installed, the more competitive a company can become. This realization has gained much momentum in recent years as elevator contractors have focused on building and installing elevators faster and faster. In many cases, the best way to become more efficient is to work smarter, not harder. To accomplish

Utilizing this platform frame, which retrofits to existing Wurtec False-Cars, installers now simply adjust their platform to the size required, install 3/4-in. plywood (or an acceptable substitute), and attach handrails and overhead protection. Using this platform not only allows for much quicker setup of the False-Car, but also provides installers with a capacity-rated and tagged platform that can be reused for the life of the False-Car. From an environmental standpoint, it also eliminates the waste created by building and throwing-away various-sized wooden construction platforms. Another area that has seen great improvements in efficiency includes the monitoring, tensioning and servicing of suspension ropes. As rope life and wear increasingly become issues and maintenance becomes more necessary, older methods such as “plucking” and tensioning via torque wrench simply do not satisfy quality and efficiency standards found elsewhere in maintenance. As a result, digital rope-tensioning devices have seen a justified surge in popularity. The use of accurate ropetensioning equipment allows mechanics to quickly and accurately measure and then tension the wire ropes in their suspension system. Depending on the design and manufacturer, tools that monitor either single ropes or all suspension ropes simultaneously are offered. Additionally, an added benefit that many users are not often aware of is that these same tensioning tools can be used to weigh the elevator car, thereby eliminating the need to “hang” the car to determine its weight – often a half-day process at a minimum. Mechanics have found that these tools’ upfront costs are often recouped in as few as two to three site visits for rope tensioning, due to the resultant increase in on-site efficiency. Another hot efficiency topic is remote monitoring. Many major elevator and controller manufacturers have been offering some iteration of this for many years, and many more are currently in the process of development and rollout of some type of remote monitoring. Whether the end goal is for preventative maintenance, data logging, hour reduction, reduced site visits or all of the above, it is quite clear that remote monitoring is here to stay. In order to compete effectively, service and maintenance mechanics must have the necessary tools at their disposal to efficiently and properly service their cus-

tomers’ elevators, and remote monitoring will play an ever-greater role in this in the future. In light of this trend, Wurtec has developed the S3 Analyzer (S3A) as a nonproprietary remote-monitoring device. The aim of the S3A is for it to be an affordable solution for contractors and service technicians at companies of any size, which will assist them with issues like “running on arrival” by tracking and storing all events so the system can be analyzed and the intermittent problem found. E-mail alerts can be sent for predefined faults, usage information and general troubleshooting data. Whether one adapts remotemonitoring tools now or later, it is clear that the issue is something for all members of the elevator industry to keep an eye on and try to determine its exact direction for the future. The final driver behind tool development for the elevator industry is one that is exacerbated ever more by the innovation and efficiency demands already discussed. As elevator systems grow in complexity and efficiency measures are demanded to an ever-increasing degree, safety becomes a critical issue in the discussion of new tool design, development and application on the jobsite. One area that has seen some of the most impacting advances (and therefore a renewed focus on safety) has been in the electronics systems responsible for driving and controlling elevators. Historically, when mechanics needed to troubleshoot problems in an elevator system, they have “jumped out” circuits in order to pinpoint the exact cause or location of the problem. For example, door interlocks can be jumped out to determine if a car is striking an interlock during its travel. While a common practice, it is also one in which training and strict procedures should always be followed. The reason for this is simple: if a circuit is jumped out, it is not acting as it was designed to; therefore, if left jumped out in normal operations, passengers and service mechanics can be subject to abnormal risks relative to the operation of the elevator. In many cases, procedures are written to ensure that jumpers are not left on site; jumpers are assigned and/or serialized for particular mechanics in order to create accountability for them. To address this potential safety problem even further, jumper kits were created, in which leads and jumpers are provided in a pouch with a log to record which circuits have been jumped out and by whom. In addition, these pouches often offer a lanyard by
Special Section: Tools of the Trade which to hang the kit on the doorknob to the machine room, thereby making it all the more likely that someone recognizes that a circuit is currently jumped out. Building on this idea and the underlying issues behind it, Wurtec has recently developed a time-out jumper, which can be electronically assigned/serialized to a mechanic and set either by administrators or the mechanic (depending on permissions granted) to time out and allow the circuit to return to its normal state. The safety issue this is meant to address is the situation where a jumper is inadvertently left on a jobsite. In this event, the time-out jumper cannot only be traced back with a history of usage and user information, but will also prevent a circuit from remaining in an unintended state during undesirable timeframes. Another safety concern that has gained momentum as of late is the issue of using engineered and load-rated tools. In the past, tools were often created at local fabrication shops per specific customer requirements. While still an option in some cases for tools not impacted by load ratings or capacity concerns, many of the products of the past no longer meet requirements for ratings (with tags to visually inform the user of their capabilities and limitations). When working on a jobsite, especially in areas of rigging and hoisting, it is of critical importance
that the user be fully aware of the weakest point in each system. In order to calculate this, he or she must be given capacity ratings on all available load-bearing tools and equipment. Through the use of finite element analysis and in-house testing equipment, Wurtec rates and tags products when required and specified for its customers. These products provide clear markings regarding their capacities to the user, which in turn help provide a safer working environment at the jobsite. As the elevators and escalators of our industry become ever more advanced and innovative, it is critical that the tooling that supports these products in maintenance, service and installation also evolve and improve equally. Contractors and manufacturers must invest in these tools just as they invest time and money into innovation applied to their own products. As a complement to quality and innovative end-use products, proper tooling provides a strong and measurable competitive advantage toward properly capturing gains in efficiency and achieving safer working conditions on the jobsite. In doing so, companies can reap the largest possible benefit from the innovative products they are developing, installing and servicing in the most efficient manner possible for their customers, while (most importantly) keeping their most valuable assets – their employees – as safe as possible while doing so.

With innovation driving product design and constantly leading to higher-performing elevator systems, ride quality in elevators has gained increased focus as of late. With the latest building boom, the desire to travel faster and more comfortably has grown substantially along with the desire to install the equipment more efficiently. As a result, the need for precision on these systems has been steadily increasing. To address this, laser systems that allow precise jobsite surveying and proper alignment of “king” and subsequent rail sections in an efficient and cost-effective manner have been implemented.
this, tools that aid in many installation processes are being designed; the use of these tools allows the mechanic to install the elevator components faster, increasing efficiency. One of the staples of the Wurtec tools product line (and a product that is known to increase efficiency over many other methods) has been the False-Car rail installation system. Eliminating the need for scaffolding and typically practical for installations of five stories or more, the fully adjustable (in distance between guides and depth dimensions) False-Car allows for quick installation of rails in the hoistway. It does this by providing the mechanic with a platform that can be powered up and down in the hoistway using a cable climber. Perhaps most importantly, in contrast to the “car-sling” method of rail installation, the False-Car allows rails to be installed prior to the general contractor’s completion of the hoistway or provision of permanent power. By allowing jobsite construction of the elevator to begin as early as possible, productivity is enhanced and job-completion schedules can be met with greater ease. As the False-Car system has steadily become more popular, one drawback that has consistently been mentioned is the need for building a wooden platform on which to ride. This has been addressed recently with the development of a patent-pending adjustable Continued aluminum platform frame.

Furthermore, precisely manufactured tools holding tighter tolerances have been developed for rail and rail joint alignment, sill-leveling, jamb alignment, the “facing” of rails and plumbing hydraulic jacks, to name just a few. This constant innovation in product development has allowed elevator manufacturers and contractors to continually differentiate themselves from their competition. However, it is their ability to efficiently install and service these products, thereby reducing the total cost of the product to the customer, which wins many jobs at the end of the day. Put simply, in conjunction with a welldesigned quality product, the faster, easier and more efficiently an elevator can be installed, the more competitive a company can become. This realization has gained much momentum in recent years as elevator contractors have focused on building and installing elevators faster and faster. In many cases, the best way to become more efficient is to work smarter, not harder. To accomplish

Utilizing this platform frame, which retrofits to existing Wurtec False-Cars, installers now simply adjust their platform to the size required, install 3/4-in. plywood (or an acceptable substitute), and attach handrails and overhead protection. Using this platform not only allows for much quicker setup of the False-Car, but also provides installers with a capacity-rated and tagged platform that can be reused for the life of the False-Car. From an environmental standpoint, it also eliminates the waste created by building and throwing-away various-sized wooden construction platforms. Another area that has seen great improvements in efficiency includes the monitoring, tensioning and servicing of suspension ropes. As rope life and wear increasingly become issues and maintenance becomes more necessary, older methods such as “plucking” and tensioning via torque wrench simply do not satisfy quality and efficiency standards found elsewhere in maintenance. As a result, digital rope-tensioning devices have seen a justified surge in popularity. The use of accurate ropetensioning equipment allows mechanics to quickly and accurately measure and then tension the wire ropes in their suspension system. Depending on the design and manufacturer, tools that monitor either single ropes or all suspension ropes simultaneously are offered. Additionally, an added benefit that many users are not often aware of is that these same tensioning tools can be used to weigh the elevator car, thereby eliminating the need to “hang” the car to determine its weight – often a half-day process at a minimum. Mechanics have found that these tools’ upfront costs are often recouped in as few as two to three site visits for rope tensioning, due to the resultant increase in on-site efficiency. Another hot efficiency topic is remote monitoring. Many major elevator and controller manufacturers have been offering some iteration of this for many years, and many more are currently in the process of development and rollout of some type of remote monitoring. Whether the end goal is for preventative maintenance, data logging, hour reduction, reduced site visits or all of the above, it is quite clear that remote monitoring is here to stay. In order to compete effectively, service and maintenance mechanics must have the necessary tools at their disposal to efficiently and properly service their cus-

tomers’ elevators, and remote monitoring will play an ever-greater role in this in the future. In light of this trend, Wurtec has developed the S3 Analyzer (S3A) as a nonproprietary remote-monitoring device. The aim of the S3A is for it to be an affordable solution for contractors and service technicians at companies of any size, which will assist them with issues like “running on arrival” by tracking and storing all events so the system can be analyzed and the intermittent problem found. E-mail alerts can be sent for predefined faults, usage information and general troubleshooting data. Whether one adapts remotemonitoring tools now or later, it is clear that the issue is something for all members of the elevator industry to keep an eye on and try to determine its exact direction for the future. The final driver behind tool development for the elevator industry is one that is exacerbated ever more by the innovation and efficiency demands already discussed. As elevator systems grow in complexity and efficiency measures are demanded to an ever-increasing degree, safety becomes a critical issue in the discussion of new tool design, development and application on the jobsite. One area that has seen some of the most impacting advances (and therefore a renewed focus on safety) has been in the electronics systems responsible for driving and controlling elevators. Historically, when mechanics needed to troubleshoot problems in an elevator system, they have “jumped out” circuits in order to pinpoint the exact cause or location of the problem. For example, door interlocks can be jumped out to determine if a car is striking an interlock during its travel. While a common practice, it is also one in which training and strict procedures should always be followed. The reason for this is simple: if a circuit is jumped out, it is not acting as it was designed to; therefore, if left jumped out in normal operations, passengers and service mechanics can be subject to abnormal risks relative to the operation of the elevator. In many cases, procedures are written to ensure that jumpers are not left on site; jumpers are assigned and/or serialized for particular mechanics in order to create accountability for them. To address this potential safety problem even further, jumper kits were created, in which leads and jumpers are provided in a pouch with a log to record which circuits have been jumped out and by whom. In addition, these pouches often offer a lanyard by
Special Section: Tools of the Trade which to hang the kit on the doorknob to the machine room, thereby making it all the more likely that someone recognizes that a circuit is currently jumped out. Building on this idea and the underlying issues behind it, Wurtec has recently developed a time-out jumper, which can be electronically assigned/serialized to a mechanic and set either by administrators or the mechanic (depending on permissions granted) to time out and allow the circuit to return to its normal state. The safety issue this is meant to address is the situation where a jumper is inadvertently left on a jobsite. In this event, the time-out jumper cannot only be traced back with a history of usage and user information, but will also prevent a circuit from remaining in an unintended state during undesirable timeframes. Another safety concern that has gained momentum as of late is the issue of using engineered and load-rated tools. In the past, tools were often created at local fabrication shops per specific customer requirements. While still an option in some cases for tools not impacted by load ratings or capacity concerns, many of the products of the past no longer meet requirements for ratings (with tags to visually inform the user of their capabilities and limitations). When working on a jobsite, especially in areas of rigging and hoisting, it is of critical importance
that the user be fully aware of the weakest point in each system. In order to calculate this, he or she must be given capacity ratings on all available load-bearing tools and equipment. Through the use of finite element analysis and in-house testing equipment, Wurtec rates and tags products when required and specified for its customers. These products provide clear markings regarding their capacities to the user, which in turn help provide a safer working environment at the jobsite. As the elevators and escalators of our industry become ever more advanced and innovative, it is critical that the tooling that supports these products in maintenance, service and installation also evolve and improve equally. Contractors and manufacturers must invest in these tools just as they invest time and money into innovation applied to their own products. As a complement to quality and innovative end-use products, proper tooling provides a strong and measurable competitive advantage toward properly capturing gains in efficiency and achieving safer working conditions on the jobsite. In doing so, companies can reap the largest possible benefit from the innovative products they are developing, installing and servicing in the most efficient manner possible for their customers, while (most importantly) keeping their most valuable assets – their employees – as safe as possible while doing so.
