GSM BSS Enhanced EDGE Coverage Feature Parameter Description
2 Overview
2
Overview
2.1 Introduction The Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature is used to improve the maximum transmit power of a transceiver (TRX) using 8 phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation schemes so that the maximum output power of high-rate packet switched (PS) services reaches that of circuit switched (CS) services. In this way, the average output power of high-rate PS services using 8PSK modulation schemes reaches that of CS services. On a GSM network, CS services and low-rate PS services use Gaussian minimum shiftfrequency keying (GMSK) modulation schemes, such as Coding scheme 1 (CS-1) to CS-4 and modulation and coding scheme 1 (MCS-1) to MCS-4, and high-rate PS services use 8PSK modulation schemes, such as MCS-5 to MCS-9. The base station controller (BSC) controls multiple base transceiver stations (BTSs) and manages BTS radio resources, and the BTSs handle services. With PS services, the BTSs determine whether to use GMSK or 8PSK modulation schemes according to the service type of the BSC. The peak power with 8PSK modulation schemes is higher than that with GMSK modulation schemes when the average power is the same. The maximum transmit power of a TRX using 8PSK modulation schemes is less than that of a TRX using GMSK modulation schemes. Therefore, with 8PSK modulation schemes, the maximum transmit power of a DTRX or multi-carrier TRX with high-rate PS services is lower than that of other TRXs with CS services. As a result, the average power with 8PSK modulation schemes is lower than that with GMSK modulation schemes. The receive gain of mobile stations (MSs) is related to the average transmit power of the BTS. Therefore, PS services using 8PSK modulation schemes cannot be provided on the edge of a cell, and the network performance does not reach the optimum level. By using different implementation mechanisms for DTRXs and multi-carrier TRXs, the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature helps improve the maximum output power of high-rate PS services. This feature can be enabled by setting the EDGEPWREN( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter to ALLOWED(Allowed) . The maximum output power with 8PSK modulation schemes must not exceed that with GMSK modulation schemes to avoid impacts on network planning. The Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature helps improve network performance in the following ways: l

DTRX
3.1 Principles BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter is set to ALLOWED(Allowed) , If the HIGHMODPWREN( the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature is enabled. With is feature, the maximum output power of a TRX increases by the value of the UPGRADELEV8PSK( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter. To enable this feature on the broadcast control channel (BCCH) TRX, set the MAINBCCHHIGHMODPWREN( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter to ALLOWED(Allowed) so that the maximum output power of the broadcast control channel (BCCH) TRX increases by the value of UPGRADELEV8PSK( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ).
For a DTRX that consists of two TRXs serving the same cell, if one of the two TRXs is idle at a transmit moment, PS services are transmitted using power amplifiers on the two TRXs at the same time on the same timeslots. That is, dynamic transmit diversity or dynamic power boost technology (PBT) is used to transmit PS services. This ensures that the maximum output power of high-rate PS services reaches that of CS services when the DTRX works in separated or combined transmit mode. NOTE
For details about dynamic transmit diversity, see Transmit Diversity Featur e Parameter Description . For details about dynamic PBT, see PBT Feature Parameter Description .
3.2 Application Scenarios The Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature can be enabled only when the output power of a TRX reaches the maximum value. For a DTRX that consists of TRXs A and B: l
Each timeslot on TRX A can be enabled with this feature only when the transmission state of the same timeslot on TRX B is disabled.
l
This feature can be enabled only when the power amplifiers on both TRXs are powered on and the two TRXs belong to the same cell. If one of the power amplifiers on TRXs A and B is powered off to save power, this feature cannot be enabled.
For Huawei 3900 series base stations, the implementation modes of enhanced EDGE coverage of a DTRX vary depending on the transmit and receive mode, as listed in Table 3-1. Issue 01 (2014-04-30)

Multi-Carrier TRX
4.1 Principles BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter is set to ALLOWED(Allowed) , If the HIGHMODPWREN( the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature is enabled. With is feature, the maximum output power of a TRX increases by the value of the UPGRADELEV8PSK( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter. To enable this feature on the BCCH TRX, set the MAINBCCHHIGHMODPWREN( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter to ALLOWED(Allowed) so that the maximum output power of the BCCH TRX increases by the value of UPGRADELEV8PSK( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ).
For a multi-carrier TRX, output power is shared among multiple TRXs to increase the transmit power of TRXs using 8PSK modulation schemes. Due to power control or a lack of traffic on some timeslots, the power amplifier on a multi-carrier TRX does not transmit signals at full power in most cases and therefore a power margin exists. If the power margin is used by other 8PSK traffic channels on the same timeslot, the maximum output power of the multi-carrier TRX using 8PSK modulation schemes may reach that of the multi-carrier TRX using GMSK modulation schemes.
4.2 Application Scenarios The Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature can be enabled only when the output power of a TRX reaches the maximum value. For a multi-carrier TRX: l
This feature can be enabled only when the capability of the power amplifiers on the multi-carrier TRX is greater than the total output power required.
l
After this feature is enabled, the total output power of the multi-carrier TRX must be smaller than the capability of the power amplifiers on the multi-carrier TRX.

6.2.2 Cell Configuration S2 or Higher When a cell is in S2 or higher configuration mode, regarding consistency of TRX coverage within the cell, some TRXs have at least two carriers and some have only one, as shown in Figure 6-8. This means that the power output capability of the TRXs is not utilized to the greatest extent. If the TRXs are configured with two carriers and at least one of them is BCCH carrier, then the BCCH carrier can be enabled with the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature. Whether the non-BCCH carrier on the TRX can be enabled with the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) and depends on the static power (determined by POWT( PWRSPNR( BSC6900 , BSC6910 )) of the BCCH carrier and the power output capability of the TRX. The non-BCCH carrier can be enabled with enhanced EDGE coverage only if the power output capability of the TRX is greater than the total power of the BCCH carrier and non-BCCH carrier. If the TRX is configured with at least three carriers or the TRX is configured with two nonBCCH carriers, BCCH carriers and non-BCCH carriers can be enabled with the Enhanced EDGE Coverage feature. Meaning: Finetune of the TRX power. During the static finetune of the TRX power, the BSC adjusts the TRX power at a step of 0.2 dB. In some scenarios, the losses vary depending on the tributaries where the power is combined, and the power difference before and after the power output is not an integral multiple of 2 dB. As a result, the cabinet-top output power cannot be adjusted at a step of 2 dB, and the TRX output power cannot be consistent with the cabinet-top output power. Therefore, this parameter provides a smaller step that can adjust the cabinet-top output power. If this parameter is set to "Default", its value is changed to 0 and sent to the eGBTS. For other BTSs, it will not be sent because some BTSs do not support the power finetune function. GUI Value Range: DB0(0.0dB), DB2(-0.2dB), DB4(-0.4dB), DB6(-0.6dB), DB8(-0.8dB), DB10(-1.0dB), DB12(-1.2dB), DB14(-1.4dB), DB16(-1.6dB), DB18(-1.8dB), DEFAULT(Default) Unit: None Actual Value Range: DB0, DB2, DB4, DB6, DB8, DB10, DB12, DB14, DB16, DB18, Default Default Value: Default
