5 Principles 1. Slide – 5 Principles Welcome everyone, this is the 5 Principles that Dr. Erickson used to become a legend and how you can use them too. Now it’s very important to me that we don’t just idolize people and role models, it’s very important that we can take lessons from them and learn from them. I certainly learned a lot from Erickson and I hope that the seminar we’re about to go into will inspire you in your own hypnosis journey on ways you can apply the life lessons he had that made him so great, for yourself. We’ll talk about what those lessons are in a second and of course way you can apply them also. 2. Slide – 5 Principles Relentlessness Intuition Curiosity Professionalism Authority Now, before we launch into the experience and background of Dr. Erickson, I want to just give you the 5 Principles Principles upfront. The The reason I’m giving you them upfront, which is a little unusual for my style is because we’re going to be investigating how Erickson became the legendary Erickson that we all know and love right now a nd of course we’re going to dive into his history, his personal history, experiences experiences in his life to do that. th at. And I think it’s very useful for you to have the 5 Principles in your mind upfront so that you can then keep track of which principles are being activated at different stages of his life. Of course, I’ll pause from time to time and I’ll point things out also, but I want you to have it in the back of your mind, so if you have a pen and paper handy you may want to write these 5 elements down and see how often you can find these 5 qualities, these 5 principles in action as we talk about Erickson.

And after we’ve talked about his life, to t o flesh out the principles, then we’ll talk a little bit about how to start applying that for yourself in your lives and of course how we as an organization might be able to help you do that, too. So, the 5 Principles are this: 3. Slide 3 – Relentlessness Milton Erickson was relentless, relentless, and that’s going to be an absolute key feature we’re going to keep coming back to. And we’ll talk a little bit about it and how to develop that relentless spirit as well. 4. Slide 4 – Intuition Milton Erickson developed his intuition. intuition. He had the most amazing connection to his unconscious mind and I’m very excited to tell you that recent research in neuroscience has shown us step by step how to do the same things without having to go through the same kind of life trauma that Erickson did. That will become more clear as we dive into the content today. 5. Slide 5 – Curiosity Erickson was deeply curious, curious, this is one of the key features that pretty much everyone who’s ever spent time with Erickson keeps emphasizing over and over again. He was curious about people, he was curious about life, about hypnosis, about medicine. And in this curiosity is one of the key features I believe that allowed him to develop this amazing skill that he had. 6. Slide 6 – Professionalism professionalism. Now this is something very interesting because when most Next is his professionalism. people talk about what a professional is and how you develop your professionalism, I think they’re they’re getting the wrong idea, and a nd especially in the hypnosis hypnosis industry. We’ll come onto why I think it is that so many hypnotherapists are struggling to make a living.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript And I’ll use a case study to demonstrate this and how by changing the attitude from pseudo-professionalism, which is what people think is is required to be a professional, to what I would call true professionalism. And Erickson again has some insight for us here. That’s one of the key marker points that I know will tell the difference between someone who is going to make it in this field and someone who who doesn’t. And doesn’t. And again, more detail will be given to that. 7. Slide 7 – Authority authority. Erickson was hands down, no Finally, the fifth principle is the idea of authority. questions about it, one of the, if not the authority on hypnosis. The question is how did he become that, what did he do to become the authority? And again, I think the answer to this is a little surprising. Some of the things will be totally obvious of course, but some of the answers will be a little surprising and those are the ones I’m going to be teasing out as well. Okay, so the 5 Principles again, relentlessness, relentlessness, a highly developed intuition or relationship to his unconscious, a deep curiosity, curiosity, a true sense of professionalism professionalism and sense of authority authority that comes from multiple sources. Those are the 5 qualities that I think made Erickson the legend that he has become, to be able to do the kind of work that he’s done and we’re all inspired by. 8. Slide 8 – Erickson’s Life History So let’s have a look at his life history in order to find out how tho se qualities, those principles were developed in his life. So let’s start off with the first phase, which was his early life, his childhood home and so on. Now, there are many, many stories that I could tell or share with you about Erickson, but you know, unless we want to turn this into a ten hour storytelling seminar on Erickson, I just want to bring out the highlights, the ones that really emphasize the qualities of relentlessness, of intuition, of curiosity and so on from his early life.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 9. Slide 9 – Childhood And Polio I think the most significant event in his entire childhood is the fact that he developed polio at age seventeen. Now, polio is a really nasty condition and it was especially nasty in 1917 because we didn’t have polio vaccines yet, the tr eatments for it were still very rudimentary and honestly it was hit or miss. This is why it’s important, when Erickson was stricken with this and they called the doctor, his family had to wait for a doctor to come in from the city because the local family doctor just wasn’t able to deal with this. The doctor examined Erickson and walked outside into the hallway and told his mother, “I think you should say goodbye to your son, I don’t think he’ll live through the night.” Now, the thing that the doctor didn’t didn ’t know at the time is that Erickson heard the doctor say this. Now, here’s where the first quality comes in. As soon as Erickson heard him say that, two things came to his mind. The first thing was, “How “How dare you talk to my mother like that.” that.” And secondly, “I’ll show you.” 10. Slide 10 – A Last Sunset So after the doctor left, Erickson asked his mother to take the nightstand and push it over to the window and angle the mirror so he could have a look at the sunset. He wanted to see a last sunset before going to sleep. And Erickson describes how intensely brilliant and beautiful that sunset was, he saw crystal clarity in everything. Then he fell asleep and in his sleep he passed into a coma. From this coma he did not wake up for three days, so this is a very serious condition. 11. Slide 11 – Erickson Was Paralyzed When he did finally wake up, against the doctor ’s prognosis, he was paralyzed from the neck down. That means that he could breathe in a belabored fashion and he could just about manage to speak with a lot of effort.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript Other than that, he could move his eyeballs, but he couldn’t do very much else. His whole body was paralyzed. For a 17 year old child, that is a very deeply problematic moment in his life. 12. Slide 12 – Erickson’s Relentless Spirit Kicks In But again, his relentlessness comes out at this point, and this is an important thing. If you’re paralyzed and can’t move and your reticular activating system is activated by motion, so if you’ve ever sat in the back of a plane or bus and started falling asleep and every time your head nods forward you wake up. That movement, that head nodding is part of what wakes you up. Erickson did not want to accept his condition and he did not want to spend the rest of his life asleep. Again, that relentlessness, that fire burning in his belly to change his conditions was very important. Now the way he changed it was, I think, revolutionary. In fact he preceded medical science by 100 years in two ways. The first one is the concept of neuro plasticity. He refused to be paralyzed through his life at a time when doctors thought once you’re paralyzed, that’s it, there’s nothing you can do with this. 13. Slide 13 – Erickson’s Curiosity Is Piqued So how did Erickson rehabilitate himself? Well the first thing that he would do is he started to investigate his own body. He focused on the tiniest little sensations that he could find because the polio, the illness had destroyed a lot of his nervous system, he literally could not send signals to his body, it was like a blankness to him and he refused to accept this. So with that deep sense of curiosity he began to focus into his body and any little sensation that he could experience, he would focus on relentlessly. He did not just give up on it; his focus was something he could do. He put his attention on what he could do, not on what he could not. Again, this relentlessness would come out, would be developed further as his life progresses. It’s also curiosity that did this for him.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 14. Slide14 – Erickson Focused On What He Could Do! So how did Erickson react? He focused on his body, he used his curiosity to find what is working and he built up from that point. Another thing that he would do is he would sit in his rocking chair. His parents would tie him to his rocking chair and then drag it onto the porch or over to the window so he could watch them working in the fields. This was a working farm that they worked on, so they couldn’t afford to just look after him, they just stuck him in the house and left him to his own devices whilst they were engulfed with their daily tasks. 15. Slide 15 – Erickson Began Revivifying His Early Life And Erickson would remember things vividly, he would look out the window at the tree in the garden and he’d remember climbing it as a body. And he would spend hours in his memories remembering every little detail, every nuance, every sensation as a way of holding onto the sensations that his body was supposed to have lost. Now here’s the really interesting thing. Between these two exercises, a couple of things happened. The first thing that he noticed was that whilst his rocking chair might have started a few feet away from the window in the morning, by the time evening came around he was suddenly right up close against the wall by the window. Somehow despite his paralysis he’d manage to cause the rocking chair to move forwards. Now, he had no idea or why that happened, but he did know that something the way he was interacting with his own body was bypassing whatever was causing the paralysis, or at least was using a different part of his body that he was unaware of before. 16. Slide 16 – Erickson Does The Impossible Now once again, that curiosity and that relentlessness foreshadow what thousands of neuroscience studies have now shown is the effect called neuroplasticity . The brain will literally change itself based on how you focus.

And in Erickson’s case as it later turned out, he managed to activate a different neurological network inside his body, one that wasn’t destroyed by the polio . So that he slowly, over the course of the year managed to teach himself to walk on crutches again. And in time, as we’ll talk about later on when we go onto his next phase of life, he actually managed to rehabilitate himself with just the aid of a cane. An incredible accomplishment at a time when that was supposed to be impossible. 17. Slide 17 – Erickson Created Neuroplasticity Through Mindfulness The second thing is, how did he activate this neuroplasticity effect? Well again, there are thousands of research studies that have shown us how Erickson did what he did. And the practice essentially is mindfulness. His personal trances share all the essential qualities of mindfulness meditation and of course adds in hypnotic revivification from his memories and recall, hypnotic elements as well. So in order to rehabilitate himself, in order to walk with the aid of crutches, Erickson was navigating very deep trances using the exact same principles that neuroscience has proven with the idea of mindfulness, and how it changes how our whole organism, our brain and everything else. Now, I will come back to the idea of mindfulness in due course when we start talking about the application of this. But I want you to understand that his trances had a very important characteristic in common with mindfulness and this is one of the reasons that I believe that he managed achieve what was at the time the impossible. 18. Slide – Erickson Never Gave Up So that element of his life, his paralysis shows how he was a relentless person and developed that relentlessness, he didn’t give up and decide to stay in bed for the rest of his life. He developed his intuition through this neuroplasticity, these exercises on mindfulness and memory, and again we’ll look at these in more detail when we start applying this as a practical tool. And he was deeply curious about himself and that

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript curiosity, by the way, is one of the key ingredients on that deep trance exploration that he used to heal his body again. 19. Slide – Erickson Was Not A Victim Now, before we leave his childhood, I want to really go back to this idea of his relentlessness and put it into context, because Erickson exhibited something we used to call the Polio Survivor Syndrome, now called the Post Polio Personality and that relentlessness and that curiosity about life in general manifested itself in one key idea. And that idea is I am not a victim. If anyone in the history of mankind had a reason to call themselves a victim, Erickson definitely did and then some. With the paralysis, the color blindness, his tone deafness, his covering up relative poverty and all kinds of other reasons, he could have found lots of excuses why he should give up and why life owes him something. But he did not. 20. Slide 20 – Erickson Created An Amazing Connection To His Unconscious He used that as a sharpening tool to sharpen his mind, to become more relentless, more curious and as a result he developed such a strong relationship with his unconscious that later on, when we get into his second phase, his student days, his medical training, he used those core skills to develop the foundations that later became Ericksonian Hypnosis. Okay, so let’s leave his childhood, although there are so many other stories we could tell about that. I encourage you to go out and find more and read books about Erickson if you’re interested in that. 21. Slide – University And Medical Training Let’s now go to the second phase, his medical training, his university training because again the 5 Principles start coming out again. In fact all 5 are very clearly viewed as a medical student.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 22. Slide – Erickson Got Two Degrees Simultaneously So the first thing you should know is that Erickson actually started two disciplines at the same time. He actually got a degree in both medicine psychiatry and in psychology at the same time. Erickson is a medical doctor; he’s a psychiatrist, which is a specialist within medicine. But he’s also a psychologist and it’s very important that you see again that his curiosity drove him to find out more about people. I have a feeling that his paralysis and how he cured himself despite medical opinions drove the curiosity because he knew that the mind had an effect and he could feel it in his own body. 23. Slide – Erickson Was Very Anti-Freudian In fact Erickson was famously very anti-Freudian, at a time when Freud was the rage, all the biggest thing, he didn’t buy it. And again, Freud’s view of the harmful unconscious, the dangerous unconscious was totally different to Erickson’s experience of a healing unconscious. And remember that, and again, we’ll look at the mindfulness and the curiosity part of it in due course, but the curiosity and that mindfulness approach to his personal trances I think are the keys that changed his unconscious from a destructive force, to a very healing one. So Erickson, who is physically handicapped, he’s walking on crutches and has all the reason in the world to kind of give up on life, didn’t just decide to do one degree, he took two. It shows his ambition, his relentlessness and his deep curiosity. 24. Slide 24 – Erickson Had To Work And Go To University Now, because Erickson’s family wasn’t very wealthy, they couldn’t pay for his tuitions. So a wealthy aunt volunteered to help out with this, but it was still up to Erickson to figure out how get by, how to pay his rent, how to eat and how to live.
10

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript Now note, Erickson could not stand, he was using crutches. He could not keep himself upright for long periods of time; it was a lot of energy cost there. So he can’t do most jobs that are available, especially around 1918, 1920’s when he was a student. 25. Slide – Erickson Works In A Canning Factory So what did Erickson do? Erickson decided to apply and got a job in a factory, a canning factory and to make up for his ‘disability’ he just got a chair, sat d own to do his work and kept up with everyone else. Again, here’s this relentless spirit. He wants to succeed with this and he will not let any obstacle get in his way. He’s in university now, his aunt has helped him out with the tuition because it’s very expensive and yet the final hurdle, his own living expenses and so on, he’s not begging, he’s not borrowing, he’s not asking for a government handout, he’s saying “I will make this happen, and I’ll find a way to work through my disability, to achieve what I want to.” 26. Slide 26 – Erickson Became A Newspaper Writer And of course there are many other jobs he had in time. He was a writer for a newspaper, an editor for articles and so on. Again, we won’t look at those stories because they all had the characteristic of being relentless and really going inside himself, trusting his intuition, his unconscious mind to come up with the solution that makes allowances for whatever disability or limitation he had to work with. 27. Slide 27 – Learning Physiology Was Tremendously Useful Now, as a medical student of course he has to learn about physiology, about the muscles of his body, the nervous system and so on and this knowledge was tremendously useful for him because it allowed him to expand upon the stuff that he was doing previously when he had learned to walk on crutches. And with this deepened level of knowledge and increasingly intense exercises, his memories and his mindfulness and his personal trances over the next ten years he managed to learn to walk again with nothing but the assistance of a cane.

Now again, I have to emphasize how deeply impressive that was. He living in a time when the idea of changing your brain, changing your whole nervous system was considered completely impossible, was considered to have been proven impossible. And yet Erickson went against medical knowledge and used that same medical knowledge, just a different aspect of it, the physiological aspect of it to develop new exercises, new drills to rehabilitate himself. And it took him ten years to do this. 28. Slide 28 – Erickson Becomes His Own First Test Subject Now, just image the relentless mindset that is required to do that. In the process of course, he learned a huge amount about himself, about his physical body and about people in general. So he became his very own first test subject. And again, that curiosity and the way that curiosity and that relentless spirit helped him to develop his intuition is very clearly seen in this phase of his life. 29. Slide 29 – A Canoe Trip Up The Mississippi Now as another example of his curiosity and his relentlessness, his refusal to accept limitations at face value, at the end of his first year, when remember he was still walking on crutches at this time, he decided to take a canoe trip up the Miss issippi river. It’s a long canoe trip he took for the entire summer. Now when he first left he was too weak to carry his own canoe. His upper body was strong enough to paddle a little bit, but he had to take frequent rest breaks because he would get exhausted really quickly. 30. Slide 30 – He Left With Few Supplies, A Pocket Knife And $2.32 He left with a pocket knife, a couple of supplies and $2.32 in his pocket and that was it. He survived the entire summer on that river by scavenging for food. He noticed that a lot of the pleasure cruises, the big boats, the cooks would throw out the scraps and sometimes amongst the scraps would be a whole potato or an apple or some other item
12

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript that had slipped in by accident. So he’d just pick out what he could from the river and eat that. 31. Slide 31 – Storytelling For His Supper! Then he’d also approach local fishermen or other people on the river and essentially he would get them to invite him around and he would tell stories for his supper. He’d share a meal and entertain them with his stories. 32. Slide 32 – Indirect Conversational Hypnosis Is Born Now, from time to time, he had a problem with fording his canoe because he was too weak, he couldn’t carry it, so initially he had to figure out ways of asking for help. But because Erickson was a very proud man, he didn’t like to ask for help, he would rather accept help when it was offered. So he started to develop a strategy of indirectly inspiring people to want to help him out and carry the canoe for him across scraps of land that he had to bring it across. So really think about it, his whole Mississippi trip at the age of around 18 or 19 years old taught the essence of the indirect hypnosis approach, made him a Conversational Hypnosis master; perfected his storytelling ability by telling stories for his supper all in one intensive summer. 33. Slide 33 – Many Seeds Were Planted On The Mississippi Not only did he do all this, but he also rehabilitated by his body. By the time he came back, he was strong physically, he looked like an athlete. So a lot of physical impairments had been removed by this trip and his mind had expanded, his curiosity, his relentlessness and his trust in his ever expanding intuition developed the seed of the skills that would be the hallmark of his work. His conversational mastery, his indirect approach to things, his storytelling, all of these things were the seeds that were developed on that Mississippi river trip.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 34. Slide 34 – The Influence of Clark Hull Okay, so let’s get back to his medical school. He’s still in his first year, before his Mississippi trip, he saw a demonstration of a researcher called Clark Hull, who’s a very interesting man, on hypnosis. Now the reason Clark Hull is important is that he was the first academic professor to start researching hypnosis in proper academic circles. 35. Slide 35 – Hypnosis Was Just Magic Mumbo Jumbo This is important because before this, hypnosis had been in the realms of pseudo science, of the mesmerism that was considered in the same place as astrology, it was a magical thing not worth any true professional’s time. 36. Slide 36 – Clark Hull Made Hypnosis Academically Acceptable Clark Hull changed all that, he looked at the actual principles of hypnosis and pioneered work in that and made it acceptable for professional and academics to look at hypnosis. He showed the world that hypnosis was not some mumbo jumbo. It was not some quaint little thing that doesn’t really work. It was a practical, psychological discipline. Now, when Erickson first saw that demonstration, again, his curiosity, driven by his relentless spirit caused him to follow up on the demo subject that Clark Hull used. He invited him back to his dorm room and right there and then without any practical instruction in hypnosis, but based on what he saw Clark Hull do Erickson put this guy in trance to see what the heck’s going on here. Once again, Erickson was curious and he was relentless and without having to wait for someone to teach him hypnosis, he decided to have a go himself and before that first year was up, he’d already tried his hand at hypnotizing dozens, if not hundreds of people. 37. Slide 37 – Erickson Takes Clark Hull’s Seminar In his second year, he actually took Clark Hull’s seminar on hypnosis and learned step by step the techniques of hypnosis as they were then known. But remember, Erickson had
14
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript already been experimenting with hypnosis, which means he had actually discovered things were possible that Clark Hull did not believe were possible. He learned it from his own personal trance experiences, the way he had rehabilitated his own body and because of this he experimented just by creating his own hypnotic technique in that first year. And by the time he went to Clark Hull’s seminar he wasn’t some starry eyed student doing exactly what the master was doing, he experimented some more. 38. Slide 38 – Erickson Goes Beyond His Teacher Yes, he learned, but he went beyond his teacher. In fact famously, some of his students, some of his direct students tell stories about how Erickson during this period would take a lecture from Clark Hull, where Clark Hull would expound some principle of what was possible and what was not possible with hypnosis and Erickson would go away, find a student, hypnotize them and somehow achieve the very thing that Clark Hull said was impossible. Then he’d wheel them into Clark Hull and say look, I did it, so what gives. Clark Hull did not like this very much, but it did teach Erickson that really, the world can be without limits to a greater extent. 39. Slide 39 – Erickson Starts Teaching Hypnosis By his third year at medical school Erickson had hypnotized hundreds of people, he’d conducted hundreds of experiments and again in demonstration of his relentlessness and now the beginning of the authority principle happening here, he started to demonstrate the results of his experiments to the faculty and staff of the universities that he was in contact with. So already by his third year, he was relatively self taught in the first few years, but by the time the third year started he was now starting to demonstrate and teach hypnosis to others. And this is one of the reasons why his authority was so strong I believe, because he left the mantle of the eternal learner behind.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 40. Slide 40 – Erickson Always Pushed The Boundaries He carried on learning of course, his curiosity made him an eternal student, but he didn’t get stuck on the seminar bandwagon. He didn’t have to be waiting for Clark Hull to come back to give him the next piece. He would push the boundaries himself through his experiments and then he shared his knowledge with other people. We’ll come back to this principle of authority in much more detail later on in this seminar but this is the first echoes or foreshadowing of what made Erickson a truly exceptional hypnotist. Now, here’s the key thing as far as I’m concerned to look at in terms of his student life, his medical training. Again, his curiosity combined with his relentlessness and of course his connection to his intuition that allowed him to problem solve, meant that Erickson did not wait around for circumstances to be ideal. 41. Slide 41 – He Developed Ericksonian Hypnosis He decided that now is the time for me to do something and then he did it and as a result of his relentlessness, his curiosity blended in, his inward orientation, his ability to turn inside himself for answers to vexing problems, those three key ingredients made him a skilled hypnotist and set the stage that would later on allow Erickson to take on the world. Take on the entire psychological profession and refute a lot of their premises and develop what would later become the Ericksonian Hypnosis style that has been so inspirational to my work at the very least, and hopefully to your work as well. Okay, so let’s recap. We have relentlessness, a developed and developing intuition and a deep curiosity and we now have the first foreshadowing of his authority starting to come into play here. 42. Slide 42 – Erickson Begins His Professional Career At this point, Erickson starts his professional career. In other words, Erickson finishes his medical internships, his various medical and psychiatric internships and is then accepted as a junior psychiatrist at the Rhode Island State Hospital.

Now, in 1930 about, Erickson joins the research service of the Worcester State Hospital and this is very important. Erickson is now put into a research position. In other words, he’s once again experimenting, he’s given permission to experiment and he’s give n subjects to experiment with. He’s given lots of different minds with different points of view and life experiences to do his work with. And I believe this is the bit where his hypnotic style really starts to emerge. 43. Slide 43 – Erickson Becomes Director Of Psychiatric Research He does so well and so impresses his colleagues that by 1934 he becomes the director of psychiatric research and training at Wayne County General Hospital. Now, again, here’s where the key principles start coming out and this is where the authority principle is really, really obvious. The research and training hospital, does research and does training, so what is research? That feeds in to his relentless curiosity and his relentless spirit of progression, of making things possible. But it was also a training hospital, which means that Erickson took on roles, he was actually a professor for other psychiatrists, for the psychologists and for the medical students and he was now starting to pass on what he had learned. 44. Slide 44 – He Established His Unquestionable Authority Now, passing on what you know makes you an authority and it changes the way that your unconscious perceives yourself, your identity, we’ll come back to this of course later in this seminar again. And I honestly believe that research made him a great hypnotist but the fact that he did training, that he would teach others, that he would help talent to grow. He would share his knowledge and impart it to others, that’s one of the places I think he really grew into his own and one of the places where his unquestionable authority came from.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript When I say unquestionable authority, I don’t mean he didn’t allow people to question him. What I mean is he was totally unafraid of people questioning him because he trusted his intuition and his experiences so much including of course, his experiences of teaching others. So, the next 15 years or so marks a tremendous amount of research. He published a huge amount of papers, he really developed hypnosis in a huge way and you really see the Ericksonian Hypnosis you now recognize, all the hallmarks of Ericksonian Hypnosis were present there. Something a lot of people don’t talk about, because of his position as a professor in teaching and training upcoming talent, he was stepping fully into his authority now. 45. Slide 45 – Erickson Moves To Arizona By 1948 Erickson, because of his allergies and side effects of polio had to move to Phoenix, where the weather was warmer and drier and there were less allergens in the air. Now we start getting into his professionalism. There are lots of stories in the Wayne County Hospital where his professionalism shows, but really the elements that I want to show you here of his professionalism really comes out in 1948 because he only spends one year in Phoenix Arizona as the clinical director of the Arizona State Hospital. 46. Slide 46 – Erickson Establishes His Professionalism That one year was very important for his professionalism. Why? Because he builds relationships. He builds relationships with the doctors, the nurses and the patients. So by 1949 when he retired to his private practice, into the life of the Erickson that we know today, he had already established himself in his community as a reliable authority, as a true professional, as someone the people could send people to when they were stuck.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript All that came from his previous experience in Rhode Island and so on, but actually all the more so from the one year he was willing to invest into his community, in this case in the State Hospital. Which built the connections that allowed people to start referring to him, and sent him the kinds of interesting clients that for the next thirty years or so would further refine and develop his craft. 47. Slide 47 – In 1949 Erickson Retires To Private Practice So, by 1949, Erickson retired to private practice and became the Erickson we know today. Now in this period, the thing that really marks out his professionalism and his attitude around that is Erickson needed no fancy gimmicks or gadgets to be the authority to help others. And his spirit of service really comes through here. One of his students was setting up his own psychiatry practice in Phoenix and is complaining it was hard to find good space and how hard it was to make his office look adequate to his position. And then he of course turned to Erickson and said I’m really surprised that you have such a humble office. Because remember Erickson’s office was in his garage extension of his house, his living room was his waiting room and his kids routinely played with the patients before they came in. This is as unprofessional an environment as you could possibly think of. So when his student complained to him about how humble his thing was and basically criticizing Erickson for being so unprofessional. So Erickson turned to him, smiled at him wisely and said, you know, this is a lot better than when I started. When I began I had a card table and two rickety old chairs, but that’s okay because the room had the most important thing in it, I was there. 48. Slide 48 – It’s Who You Are That Matters Now this is a really important mindset I would really like to impress upon you. I t’s not how fancy or swank your offices are, what matters was him and his relationship to the patients.

His kids played with his patients, they sat in his living room, he worked from a garage on a rickety old chair and his writing table was a collapsible card table. And yet he still worked miracles with his patients because his authority, he didn’t question his authority, which means his patients didn’t. 49. Slide 49 – Erickson Was Not Rooted In A Mask And his professionalism was not rooted in some mask or external veneer. His professionalism was rooted in his ability to work with people in his spirit of service, in his desire to make the person in front of him better and make that person the most important person in the world whilst he was there. 50. Slide 50 – Recap Of The 5 Principles In Action Okay, so I’ve used a few interesting stories of Erickson’s life to show you those 5 Principles in action. How relentless he was, how deeply he developed his intuition, how curious he was about life, about people and pretty much any process. And this coupled with his relentlessness and his internal inspiration set the foundation for the miracles he would later be able to achieve. Then in his professional career of course, we have his professionalism, which wasn’t rooted on some mask that he was wearing, it was rooted in his humanity. His ability to care for people and want to be of service. And it was his authority, and again his authority didn’t come fro m the stern title, it wasn’t from his medical doctor, it wasn’t from the suit he was wearing, fancy offices, the titles or the accolades, it was none of that. His authority was rooted first of all, his skill developed through years of experimentation and secondly his willingness to share what he knew with others, without fear. And in doing so, his confidence in his self, his sense that this is truly the right way to go about things because don’t forget, medical students push back, they question and they’re

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript supposed to question. As a result of which he really sharpened his sense of authority within that milieu. Okay, so we have 5 Principles and we’ve taken a whirlwind tour of Erickson’s life in order to understand the 5 Principles in action. 51. Slide 51 – How You Can Emulate Erickson So how can you emulate Erickson for yourself? I’d like to show you what you can do to emulate Erickson and I’ll do this in a twofold way. I’ll give you the principle and show you how to put the principle into action. A nd I’ll also show you how we’re putting this into action with the school that we’re developing here, the Hypnosis Diploma School, which as far as I’m concerned us going to be the elite certification level, once people see how good people coming out of this school really are. How professional, how they live up to these 5 qualities we’ve just described here. I think you’ll agree that this is going to be a really exciting place to be and whether or not you decide to join us here, the important factor is can you take the lessons and figure out how to apply them for yourself. 52. Slide 52 – How To Become Relentless So the first stage of all the first qualities is relentlessness. Now, what made Erickson so great? Well, he practiced. You know the old adage, practice makes pe rfect? Well, it’s not entirely true. Those of you who have trained with me before will know that it’s not practice that makes perfect, it just makes permanent. It is correct practice that makes perfect. 53. Slide 53 – The Ladder Of Progression So when you practice you need to design for yourself a series of progressions, of here’s the starting point, and the starting point has always got to be simple. Simple enough for
21

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript you to do, but challenging enough to stay interesting. Note how curiosity is starting to come into this now right? You need to design for yourself that ladder of progression and then dive into doing experiments. 54. Slide 54 – The Diploma School Now we’re helping people do that by having a bunch of really cool features built into the diploma school. 55. Slide 55 – Hypnosis Skills Coaching The first one is a two year syllabus of hypnotherapy skills. It’s called the Hypnosis Skills Coaching Segment and they are delivered to you every single week. A brand new lesson, a brand new coaching segment with demonstrations, with exercises to do; the whole works. And this is all based on the Conversational Hypnotherapy Program that some of you may already be familiar with. It’s also based on Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and Ericksonian Storytelling. So if you take Conversational Hypnotherapy, the CHPH program, Ericksonian Hypnosis and the Ericksonian Hypnotic Storytelling programs and you turn those into master classes where every week for two years you get lessons and exercises and so on, that is essentially mirroring Erickson’s progression in terms of experimentation. This is a very exercise driven process and the theories and principles only come out of actual experiences, so you’re actually mirroring the way Erickson worked, by experimentation, by having people to practice with and applying that. 56. Slide 56 – Applied Conversational Hypnosis Okay now, alongside the Hypnotherapy S kills and training sessions, we’re going to have a parallel stream that runs at the same time with Applied Conversational Hypnosis skills. And again, this is a two year course, again, it’s delivered in weekly sessions. So each
22

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript week you’ll get a new coaching lesson with techniques, with principles, with demonstrations of the principle in action so that you can practice that for yourself again and it’s moving you down that road. Now the reason why we have a separate Applied Conversational Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Skills Coaching segment is an import one. Hypnotherapy teaches you the aspects of actually helping people make personal and powerful transformation. The Applied Conversational Hypnosis allows you to do a number of things, the most important of which is to continuously be able to create the hypnotic context. Conversational Hypnosis presupposes a conversation within which it sits. If people are messing up the conversation in the first place, then Conversational Hypnosis and Conversational Hypnotherapy become very difficult to do. It’s still possible, but you’ve limited its scope and its power. If your conversations become deep and powerful on their own, then a number of things happen. First of all in your therapeutic approach you already have a vessel within which the Conversational Hypnotherapy techniques and skills fit. Secondly Applied Conversational Hypnotherapy will teach you what you need to know to inspire people to work with you like a true professional should. 57. Slide 57 – The Average Hypnotherapist Makes $15K A Year There is no need for a formal sales pitch. And I think this is where a lot of people start having difficulties. They use sleazy sales tactics that don’t work very well, as a result of which they can’t inspire people to work with you. You can’t tell someone I’ll fix you, you’re broken; it doesn’t work very well. If you’re already a hypnotherapist and you’re already in private practice and you’ve got the natural average income, which is about $15k in the US, about £15k in the UK, about €15k in Europe and equivalent amounts in the rest of the world, then one key reason for that is you’ve bypassed the professional lessons from Erickson and you’re using sales tactics that do not fit into a therapeutic environment, do not fit with hypnosis and as a result people are not inspired, they’re afraid to work with you.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript And I’ll share a story with you shortly about a hypn otist whose career transformed with this attitude in mind, but we’ll come back to that later when we talk about professionalism itself. 58. Slide 58 – Many Conversations Just Trigger Defense Mechanisms The next reason why Applied Conversational Hypnosis is so important and again, really develops your conversational skills and if you have access to the training the Power of Conversational Hypnosis skills as well, it’s because it teaches you how to talk to people so that it allows them to drop their defense mechanisms. So many times when I see a hypnotist starting to work with someone, to get into their session, I see them making life hard for themselves, in everything they do in everything before the formal hypnosis begins. It actually puts people’s defensive mechanisms on notice and life becomes harder. The reason I originally developed the Conversational Hypnotherapy protocols as opposed to the Conversational Hypnosis protocols is because I wanted to basically be done with my work with my clients before I start any formal trance work. In this way, my life got a lot easier and I hope to be able to share those lessons with you too. 59. Slide 59 – Get Deep Inside Other People’s Minds Applied Conversational Hypnosis, getting good at Conversational Hypnosis is one of the key ingredients to get deeply inside other people’s minds. If you can get inside people’s mind at a deep level, not the shallow level that defense mechanisms kick you out to, then you have a chance of making massive life transformations with ironically, relative ease. And it also allows you ultimately to start working completely covertly. This was the way I used to work with my executives when I was an Executive Coach. This is the thing that allows you to become legendary.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 60. Slide 60 –The Wizard Of The Desert Conversational Hypnotherapy allows you to solve massive problems, but Applied Conversational Hypnosis is what raises you to the status of a legend, or this mythological kind of place. It’s the reason why Erickson was given the title, the moniker ‘The Wizard of the Desert.’ You will be the wizard of your communities, of your environments once you understand how to apply Conversational Hypnosis and rest assured, with two years of weekly lessons and two years of weekly practice drills to experiment with and play with, this will absolutely get you to that point. As long as of course, you’re willing to put the work in and you’re willing to ask for help at the right points in time when you don’t understand something fully. 61. Slide 61 – Practice, Practice, Practice Okay so the next hurdle that you have to solve in order to become relentless and to practice this way is where do you practice? Now remember Erickson had a huge amount of practice from wherever he was at. First as a student, if you are a student at any university, students are normally very open minded. I started as a student just like Erickson did. Admittedly, I didn’t go as far as Erickson did as a student, but that’s exactly the same place that I started. And why? Finding people to practice with is ridiculously easy as a student. I had dozens of volunteers, Erickson had hundreds of them. Now after that of course he started going into hospitals and research establishments and again, research establishments means they’ve got people for him to experiment with, once again. Now, that means that Erickson was practicing hypnosis daily. So you need to also figure out how to start practicing hypnosis daily. Now I realize for a lot of people this is a huge constraint, it’s the number one constr aints we’ve been hearing from our students, our clients over the last nine or so years we’ve
25

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript been in business teaching hypnosis professionally. I’m really excited to tell you, we have a solution for you. You could create your own practice groups, bring people in and so on, by all means do that, I still encourage you to do that if you can. However, on the Diploma School, which is an online school, which means you’ll have access wherever you are in the world, we have two key features there that are going to absolutely transform your practice. 62. Slide 62 – Practice With An Experienced Hypnotist The first key feature is we have daily practice groups with an experienced hypnotist leading those practice groups to inspire and encourage you to practice for yourself. In fact, I say daily practice groups, we are currently working to make that into two daily practice groups, so you have a choice of when you practice as well, depending on what time zone you happen to be in. So we have daily practice groups that give you a location to go and get inspired, to get some feedback and to have exercises to do. 63. Slide 63 – Practice With Peers Anywhere In The World The second thing we have, and this is unique in the history of hypnosis, we have developed a unique application of voice and video functions using I think it’s called Voice Over IP. We’ve built that into this online school, which means you will be able to make an appointment with anyone in the system and have a free one to one live conversation either just audio, or video and audio, so you can look at them and talk to them or just talk to them depending on which aspects you want to practice. And you’re going to have a ton of eager students just like you to work with there. This is hands down one of the most beneficial things that we have to offer there. I know how much I struggled starting off to find students once I left university, it was as though my volunteers dried up.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 64. Slide 64 – How To Get Lots Of Volunteers Now of course there are other solutions out there. If you have the How To Practice Hypnosis Without Fear, which is very cheap and very easy to go through, I show you lots of strategies that I developed on how to get volunteers and make that happen, but that’s a lot of time involved there. Here we lay it out for you on a platter. Whichever way you decide to go folks, it doesn’t matter. You’ve got to create a place to practice as well as a progressive method of practicing. In other words, know what you want to do and a place to have people to do it with. So that takes care of the relentless practice aspect of what make Erickson so great. 65. Slide – Community The next bit is kind of a trick one, which is how do you stay relentless, because Erickson had a unique personality. He was forced by his condition, by polio, he had a Post Polio Personality, it forced him to work every single day to become the man that he became. It started off by him dissolving his paralysis up to a point and of course the ten years after that that he continued to invest in himself until he could walk properly again. That is a testament to his relentlessness. Now most of us, in a strange way, the fact that our lives are pretty okay is a handicap, because Erickson was forced every day to overcome his struggles. We are not forced, we can sit on our couch and say, I think I’ll take it easy today. We live normal lives, we’re surrounded by people who like us the way that we were and they don’t allow us to shine and become greater because our environment tries to bring us back to what they know. Erickson as you know spent a lot of time in formal academia driving him to excel. And you know American universities in his era were really blossoming and there was a real spirit of adventure at the time. There was a real spirit of inquiry that fed into his curiosity and helped him develop his relentlessness even further.

So how can you create that for yourself? The answer comes in a simple word and it is community. The secret to becoming relentless in life is surrounding yourself with relentless people, by communicative people who are like minded. 66. Slide 66 – Joining Your Community Of Hypnotists Now, the way we’ve done the school is automatic. If you’re turning up to the practice group we’ve created for you. If you’re turning up to the forums and we’ll talk more about that in a moment. If you are doing your one to one practice session with other students, you will be in an environment where you become relentless. The school becomes your sanctuary. No matter where you are in the world all you need is an internet connection and a computer to get online with. So you don’t have to be an indomitable spirit straight away. You get into an environment where you get to practice and have hundreds, if not thousands of peers reaching out to you to say, stand up agai n, we’re with you. That ability to surround yourself with like minded people, people who aspire to greatness the way you do, that is an absolute key to success. And however you do it, whether you join our community or form your own community, do it. Having a vibrant community around you works magic. I cannot begin to tell you how powerful that has been in my life. The entire reason I’m talking to you right now is not completely by accident, it’s because of community. 67. Slide 67 – The Deep Trance Training Manual My first book, the Deep Trance Training Manual I wrote it because I was so inspired by rekindling my relationship with hypnosis when I was a lawyer; that I wanted to start my own practice group. I didn’t want my own group to deteriorate to drinking tea and chatting which most of the other practice groups I’d joined had devolved into. So I wrote a manual so that every time we would get together we would actually practice something.
28

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript
Now that manual, people loved it so much they said you should publish it. I had no intention of publishing it; it was my own personal guide. I was doing exactly what I’m recommending to you to do. And I took that guide and offered it to a publisher and to my great surprise and delight, they accepted it. That established me as an authority in the field and is one of the reasons that years after that Cliff and I started working together and built the Hypnosis Training Academy. It all started from my own desire to be great and my own recognition from the life of Erickson that that relentless spirit is developed in a community where I get to have as much support from others and I get a chance to practice with others. I urge you, take that lesson to heart, find a community, join that community and make that community mean something because they will help you out when things seem to be falling apart for you. 68. Slide 68 – Your Own Hypnosis Tutors And Mentors Not only are we leading you with your peers to do that, we’re also putt ing in other success mechanisms. For example, we have success tutors and mentors at the school now, who will be there to answer your questions and are going to help you on a one to one basis to plan your journey. And you’ll have regular meetings with them where you can give feedback about your journey so any obstacles that come up you can resolve, you can ask questions about, you can be guided in the direction you need to be going in, in order to succeed. Note, the tutors and the mentors will not do the work for you, they can’t. The only person that can do the work is you, but they’re there for you and that’s a really key ingredient that I actually didn’t have. My mentors and my tutors well, I had to pay for that. Every time my spirits flagged, every time the questions became unbearable and I no longer had someone to ask my questions of what did I do? I paid for a seminar and these things didn’t come cheap, the
29
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript average seminar was around $2k and most of them included a flight and a hotel on top of that so we’re talking around $3.5k per experience, shall we say. Now of course in the Diploma School we’ve taken all of the guesswork out of it for you because we have the tutors and we have the mentors that will focus on your success. And we have the peer group that will support you and give you a supportive environment. This is a true sanctuary that I can’t begin to desc ribe to you how much I wish I’d had when I started. 69. Slide 69 – Hypnotic Daily Meditations Train Your Mind Now the final ingredient for developing relentlessness is to develop your mind. Train your mind in some way every day. Now inside the school the way that we’re helping you do this is, we have exercises based on neuroscience that will develop your mind. These are special mind training exercises, I call them Hypnotic Meditations. They build in the best of hypnosis and the best of mindfulness and neuroscience and neuroplasticity, all of these things have been combined into daily meditations. And let me emphasize this, they are daily meditations, you will have a brand new exercise to do every single day to build progressively. It’s going to stay fresh inside your mind; there are no boredom elements from repetition. You’ll be constantly stimulated in new ways and once again, the research shows the more stimulation you put into the brain the more it evolves, develops and grows healthy connections. Which means that I’m taking the brunt of the force here. I’m developing, I’m recording 730 individual mediations for you in order to help you develop that mindset. And relentlessness is one of the key things that come out of regular practice this way. 70. Slide 70 – Mind Training On Your Own Now, how do you do this on your own? Well, you do self hypnosis. You meditate; you choose whatever path is right for you. There are brain training games out there and other things.
30

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript
The brain training games, just so you know, tend to develop things like visual acuity and memory and reasoning skills and so on. Very useful, absolutely, but don’t completely go into this indomitable spirit that characterize Erickson directly. Self hypnosis and mindfulness are much more for this. Most meditations will have this effect for you and of course we’ve already laid that journey out for you, I’m making the effort on your behalf so that you can just focus all your effort, all your energies on progressing as fast as possible. Okay, so that’s the first principle from Erickson’s success strategy in action there, I hope that makes sense to you guys. 71. Slide 71 – Developing Your Own Powerful Intuition Let’s now move to the second principle, which is the intuitive principle. How did Erickson create this amazing intuition, this amazing relationship with his own unconscious mind? And of course his understanding of trance in the same process? So we come back to where we left off a moment ago with this mind training program. We have 730 individual daily hypnotic meditations, which of course is unique. It’s based on my work, on neuroscience research, on the 3,000 year old meditation process. This is really east meeting west in a brand new and unique way. Now let me just drill into one of the key features of this course in particular because this is very, very important that you understand this if you’re going to do it on your own, you’ll know how to do this too. Your brain is connected to the rest of the nervous system in your body through different channels shall we say, that go through your spinal column called lamina’s. Each lamina is like a fiber optic cable into your body and each one connects to your nervous system in different ways.
31
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript The one that we’re interested in most is called Lamina 1. This is your intuition, it’s your body awareness, it’s the way that Erickson started. Remember, his mindfulness journey began with a body that was completely insensitive; he couldn’t feel anything or move it. And his initial explorations were in finding any tiny hint of sensation and then focusing on it to the point where it would blossom and therefore would stimulate dormant parts of his nervous system which would bypass those parts of his nervous system that were destroyed by the disease. So Erickson, the reason he became such a great hypnotist in my opinion is he had probably one of the most highly developed Lamina 1 connections in the entire field of psychotherapy. I wouldn’t say in the whole world, because hard core meditators have equally developed mental faculties, but that’s what I discovered about it on mindfulness meditation and how it builds Lamina 1 and how incredibly powerful that was built inside of seasoned meditators. We’re talking about monks who are in monasteries for years at a time meditating. And the reason why this Lamina 1 is so important is because Lamina 1 is the way that your unconscious mind talks to the conscious mind most directly. There are other ways the unconscious mind will talk to you as well, but they are much more subtle ones and if you get the strong Lamina 1 connection, you speed up that journey. 72. Slide 72 – The Unconscious Mind Rocks! Let me illustrate this with a little bit of research here. So you have students who were research subjects of course, students are the cannon fodder of all psychological experiments. They’re given a game and to make it interesting they’re given cash rewards. There are blue cards and red cards and based on the rules of the game when they get a certain card they either win some money or they lose some money. Now, unbeknownst to the students the decks have been stacked. The blue deck will give you small consistent wins and losses so over time you will tend to accumulate quite a decent amount. You don’t tend to lose too much.
32
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript The red deck has been stacked in terms of much bigger variations. So in other words, when you win you tend to win bigger and when you lose you lose bigger as well. So people who got stuck on the red deck would be stuck in Vegas, shall we say. They would make money and then lose it and then the whole cycle starts again. Here’s where it gets interesting. At around 70 card turns, the students had a sense that there was something about these decks that wasn’t quite straight forward. They knew there was something different between the red and blue deck but couldn’t quite voice it out loud. At about 80 card turns they figured out the patterns, the red deck is riskier, the blue deck is safer. Now here’s the interesting thing. During this experiment they taped a galvanic skin response to their hand, the hand that turned the card over. Galvanic skin response measures the connectivity of your skin and it’s a good measure of stress because the more stressed you become the more the response alters, it changes, right? So, when these students had turned over roughly ten cards, researchers saw that the galvanic stress response, although stress response is measured by the galvanic skin response, was powerful, they could measure it every time the hand went toward the red deck. In other words the unconscious mind had worked out after 10 card turns that the red deck was dangerous and the blue was much safer. So when they turned the blue card over, they would experience less stress. When they turned the red card over they experienced more stress. This, by the way is also the way the unconscious mind talks to us, it was telling us all along which card to turn over. It’s just that the conscious mind took 7 times longer to begin to catch up to it, actually 8 times longer, it had to do another 70 tries longer than the unconscious mind before it caught up. 73. Slide 73 – Powerful Mind Training When you train your mind in the ways that we ’ve been discussing here you vastly reduce that rate because the Lamina 1 is what sends the information to you and is what
33

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript allows you to move down the success paths much more quickly. And I’m convinced once again by all that neuroscience has seen and what I know about Erickson, his initial life that we’ve discussed already, the parallels are uncannily common. So really, if you want to be Erickson, you’ve got to train your mind. And if you’re going to train your mind, then follow the stuff that we’ve been talking about, in a way that builds this Lamina 1 structure. And importantly when you do this, you want to explore it the way Erickson did, with curiosity, no beating yourself up, no pushing for the sake of pushing, just be curious and fascinated and engage in your mind training with a spirit of discovery. A spirit of wanting to know. 74. Slide 74 – Getting Personal Trance Training Now of course practice groups are another great way of training your own mind, whether you do it online with our practice group or you develop your own practice group of friends that you practice with, when you volunteer as a subject for a trance experience, you are getting trance training, hands down. 75. Slide 75 – Getting Personal Therapy Now I remember when I was in my school, I used to love those sessions because I got a lot of private therapy done. It wasn’t a part of the school, nor will it be part of our school but it happens automatically, which is a wonderful thing. In terms of how we’re doing this, we have practice groups with group leaders where you get two years worth of personal trance training. Of course on top of that we have the private online meeting rooms where you can talk to someone with video or voice chat one to one to do private sessions. Which means once you start getting good at the therapeutic side as well, you can absolutely volunteer your time to help others pro-bono and at the same time learn from it. It’s a very safe environment from which to make the transition from practicing student to confident authority because you have a safe environment in which you can do some failing, you will get feedback and you still of course have access to tutors and so on to

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript discuss what’s happened so you can refine your thinking and fix any problems in a much faster time than I had to when I was doing this all on my own. Okay so that’s the first two principles out of the way, relentlessness and evolving intuition and you see how they blend together. We have talked a little bit about the idea of curiosity and how important it is to feed into the relentlessness and the way you develop your intuition through mind training. 76. Slide 76 – Making Your Curiosity Flourish So let’s talk about curiosity more directly now. So the basic principle is this, in order for curiosity to stay fresh, you’ve got to keep stimulating your mind. That’s the basic principle right there. Now Erickson did it by his almost in-exhaustive experiments, he had lots of students he could practice on of course. I myself did it by going to lots of seminars. I spent at this point, well over $200k just going to seminars, seeing other hypnotists working to stimulate my own thinking. I’ve bought thousands of hours of audio courses, video courses. I’ve an entire library of hypnosis books. I keep reading not just hypnosis books but related fields also. Why? Because it stimulates my mind and it keeps my curiosity fresh so I can keep evolving and exploring. 77. Slide 77 – Keep Your Mind Constantly Stimulated So however you do it, keep stimulating yourself. Now how are we going to do this within the school, well the answer is very easy. Number one, every week you’re going to be exposed to brand new lessons, brand new demonstrations, brand new principles and they build progressively, so you’re going to be stimulated on a weekly basis. 78. Slide 78 – Keep Experimenting With New People Of course you’ll also have at the school the ability to experiment with people, but when it comes to experiments that you really want to go into, one is about the effects of
35

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript hypnotic language. You’ve got to understand how frames and different kinds of language patterns work so that you don’t just throw out the language in the spray and pray approach, you use language with precision. You know exactly what to say and when to say it. The flip side is you also need some hypnotic therapeutic technique to experiment so you can find out how other people respond to these things so you can be adaptable to your clients and make the session fit them rather than trying to force them into whatever paradigm is the one that you’re used to. So in order to get that experimentation going of course, we’ve got the Hypnotherapy Skills Coaching segment and the Applied Conversational Hypnosis segments, both of which run for the two years and will keep you stimulated with fresh ideas every single week. Both of which will give you unique exercises to actually experiment with. So your mind’s taken care of, your stimulation’s taken care of and your progressive set of exercises is also taken care of. 79. Slide 79 – Fast Track Your Hypnotic Skills As far as I’m concerned, this is the fast track way of doing experimentation. It’s what I had to do to train myself, this is why I created the Deep Trance Training Manual initially and of course have gone a lot further since then. And this is as far as I’m concerned the fastest wa y to get good at something, have a progression already set ahead of you and then follow it in a way that’s going to keep you stimulated constantly. Now one of the key ingredients again inside of the school is these one to one meeting rooms and the practice groups, both of them will keep stimulating you too. You have a forum where you can post ideas and talk with people. You’ll have a text chat place where you can have live text interactions with people so you can feel the live quality of the conversation even if you’ve only got time to do some text rather than actual voice chatting.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript You’ve got the one to one meeting rooms for voice and video chats and they don’t always have to be used to do a session or practice hypnosis, you can also use them to meet with other hypnotists and just discuss an idea. In fact, the one to one chat rooms will be the way in which your mentors and your tutor will be in touch with you so that you can then discuss with them how you’re progressing and how to shape your learning and development plan so you have absolute clarity on how to get the most out of that school system, right? 80. Slide 80 – Live Trainings Included! Now live trainings I think are also a key ingredient. Those of you who know me know that I can’t certify anyone in hypnotherapy without a live portion, because that tests your character, it allows us to see the skills in action. It allows us to do a lot of checks that are very important and the Diploma School, our online school is not entirely online. There are live workshop elements as well, physical trainings that you can come to. The course fees are included into your school fees, which means once you’ve paid your school fees, the live trainings are there as well. 81. Slide 81 – Three Levels Of Certification And you’ll have three different levels of certification you can go through. One the first year, the second two will come in the second year and importantly it means that you can start practicing as a hypnotherapist pretty much straight away. As soon as you’ve come to the live training and been certified, you can start practicing hypnotherapy, earning income as a hypnotherapist. Most people start part time to get a little bit of stuff going there and you will still be able to carry on with the school at the same time, so that as you come up with problems in your practice, either professional skills problems or therapeutic skills problems and so on, the course will answer it. And of course your tutors will say here’s a quick answer for you , and in about three months when we get to that segment you’ll be able to go through it in more detail and have more practice around that too.

82. Slide 82 – Form Lifelong Friendships Another wonderful thing about these live workshops is that you get to meet people face to face in person as well and in my experience - once you’ve met people online and have a relationship with them, which you absolutely can do through the voice, video and texting chats as well, meeting them in person feels like meeting an old friend. One thing that I’m very proud of in our school to date already is that people really have formed lifelong friendships because we do attract a very high caliber of people. I’m deeply honored about that part and being able to share that with you and whenever I see you, I take advantage of that. Whether it’s through the Diploma School or in a more ad hoc basis of coming to seminars and so on, either way is fine. Support of course is another thing that’s important to keep you curious and I think we’ve already mentioned that you can start lively discussions with the video or live texts and so on but also the live practice groups that are online. Again it gives you a chance to ask questions, get motivated and find like minded, open minded people that you can practice with in the way the Milton Erickson did. Again, these are the key ingredients we’ve built into the school because I believe this is the fastest, most powerful way to get good at hypnosis and hypnotherapy to become an elite level hypnotist, let’s put it that way. And again, you’re more than welcome to create that on your own, you have the key ingredients, what to look for and what to create. 83. Slide 83 – Become A True Professional So now we have the first three principles down, relentlessness, intuition and curiosity. So let’s look at the fourth principal and this is professionalism and this is a huge one. Remember, Milton Erickson had lots of people around him that helped him become a professional.
38
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript How are we going to do this in the school? Well, we have the tutors and mentors to support you. Remember, you’re going to have regular one to one calls with them to discuss your progress and they can help adjust your progression plan to be sure it fits your lifestyle, so you can overcome hurdles and so on. And also to ask questions to clarify something in different places, whether it’s in the one to one call or practice groups, that’s what they’re there for, to support your growth as a hypnotist. 84. Slide 84 – Grow Into A Powerful Presence Now, Erickson of course also had a powerful presence, that’s part of what made him a professional. Remember, he broke all the rules of ‘so called professionalism ,’ he saw clients in his home, they waited in his living room, they played with his children, he didn’t even have a proper office, it was a garage with a rickety old card table and a couple of fold up chairs. And yet what made him professional? He was there. And because he was there, that’s all that the client needed. So how do you become the kind of person that all it requires is for you to be there, and then you’re presence is all that it takes? Well, you’ve got to grow as a person; you’ve got to develop yourself as a person. One of the ways I’m going to push out about the authority that makes you an authority and feeds into your professionalism, is that you have the power of conviction. To be able to say to someone listen, I know hypnotherapy works because hypnosis has changed my life. I know it will change yours too. That kind of deep conviction works miracles in inspiring clients to challenge their own issues. How do you do that? Well we have lots of resources again. We’ve got the mind training, remember, and daily sessions that you can go through. 85. Slide 85 – Understand Your Clients On The Inside In the mind training sessions you’ll grow, you’ll be able to map out your trances , which means you’ll be able to anticipate how your clients are doing inside their own trances when you’re helping them. It allows you to create that stronger rapport with your intuitions because you’ll have a much richer experience of your own hypnotic realities inside yourself and so when a client responds, or when you see a shift in the client,
39

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript you’ll be in a much better position to know where they’re at and very importantly what to do about it. 86. Slide 86 – Develop An Incredibly Powerful Conversational Style Of course the Applied Conversational Hypnosis, the two years training there will help you to develop an incredibly powerful conversational style. Just to give you a little heads up, we’ll come back to this again in due course, the Professional Skills Coaching is what allowed one of my students to take his practice from struggling to basically tripling his income based on the Applied Conversational Hypnosis principles. It teaches you a conversational style, it enhances all the best things you already have and it helps you fill in the gaps in between and does it in a step by step manner over the two years. Once you can blend powerful conversations with even more powerful Conversational Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, then you’re set to be a true professional as well. 87. Slide 87 – Professionalism Is Primarily Attitude The other thing that we have is a Professional Skills Coaching because think of it this way, professionalism is primarily an attitude. It’s something that happens inside your mind first. And Milton Erickson had a legion of helpers, he had medical doctors, he had professors, he had his peers, he had centuries of medical resources and medical mistakes from which to learn from to shape his own professional personality. He also worked in hospitals, he worked with very different patients and again, he got feedback from the clients, from his patients as well as from his superiors, the other professors, the other staff and faculty at the hospital he was working at. So that was one of the key things that allowed him to be so professional in spite of the fact that he only had a rickety old chair in the garage to work with at the start.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 88. Slide 88 – Building Powerful Enduring Relationships The second thing that he did and this is incredibly clever of him, he built powerful relationships which are very important, number one for hypnotherapy. If you screw up the relationship with your client, the therapy is honestly, it doesn’t work so well. You get the relationship right, therapy is almost an add on; it’s just icing on the cake. And those of you who have trained with me before, this should be no surprise to you; it’s the H+ principle. I love to tell people a story about how I saw a hypnotist once who had incredible H+ and horrible technique and he was getting results I couldn’t get despite his horrible technique. Because H+ trumps techniques, the relationship trumps techniques. And so to be a true professional you’ve got to develop the right relationships and it’s not just for your clients, by the way, it’s also with your community. Recall that Erickson spent a year in the Arizona State Hospital and this became his initial source for referrals. Yes the other hospitals he worked at also referred to him, but really the local hospital was the one the allowed Erickson to make a living and feed his family, and by the way he had a large family, eight children. It allowed him to do all that because he had a powerful referral source and the referral source was built on relationships. 89. Slide 89 – Build Relationships To Build Your Practice Again, the Professional Skills Coaching will teach you how to build those powerful relationships not just with your clients, but with your communities too. It’s what allowed the student I just mentioned earlier on to triple his income. He went from a position where he had to use his personal savings to support his business to the position where his business was now supporting him. He became financially stable and this was within just finishing only the first module, we have a couple of modules in the course. He finished the first module and three months of practicing that module got him those results.
41

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript Of course I can’t guarantee the same for you, you’ll have to make your own mi stakes and it depends on how much effort you put into those relationships, but I can absolutely give you every single one of those tools that you will need. And I can show you all the obstacles that will be in the way and how to solve those obstacles becau se I’ve done it and taught other people how to do it. As long as you’re willing to be flexible and actually work the system then I have every confidence that it will help you also. 90. Slide 90 – How To Build Relationships On Your Own For those of you who want to do this on your own, how do you do this? Here’s the things you do: 1. Look for hypnotherapists, coaches, psychotherapists and so on who are independently successful. Now my measure for success and what I used to create the Professional Skills Coaching course are people with an income of at least six figures, so at least $100k. It doesn’t mean that someone earning $50k, which I suspect would have been roughly Erickson’s salary, aren’t professionals, some of them are amazing professionals. And if they have exceptional talents I’ve included them in the process as well. It’s just that the ones that are earning six figure incomes do truly know something and it doesn’t matter which discipline that they happen to be in, and that’s also of course been built into that system. So look for the people that are financially successful and see what they’re doing and of course take those bits that really work for you. 2. Learn the power of Conversational Hypnosis. Remember, being a professional is based on developing the right kinds of relationships. The Power of Conversational Hypnosis is all about developing powerful relationships. So when you combine the Power of Conversational Hypnosis with Conversational Hypnotherapy you have a wonderful, almost unbeatable double whammy.
42

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript So learn Conversational Hypnosis or learn a method for developing powerful, deep conversations and deep relationships and then use that on your community as well as on your clients. And that is the recipe for success as a professional in this field. 91. Slide 91 – Recap Of How To Become A Professional Okay, so just to recap here, how to become a professional: 1. Look at other professionals, psychotherapists, psychologists, coaches and hypnotherapists when they are succeeding, not just for those who are employed. You can look at the employed ones for the ethics, but look at the successful ones for the practice side of it. 2. Develop a powerful personal presence and again, self hypnosis and mindfulness training and meditation training will help you to develop that. 3. Develop powerful relationships both with your clients and with your community and with this, this is how again, by the way the student I mentioned earlier on, used the Erickson strategy that I’ve just been describing to you, which means he tripled his income without spending a single penny on advertising. He did no online strategies, in fact I told him to just take his website down for a while because it wasn’t working for him. All it was doing was distracting him. He had a very basic website with his name and details on it. He developed an entire strategy around relationships and developed that; it’s a really important ingredient. So that’s our fourth principle down, it’s about professionalism. We’ve got relentlessness, intuition, curiosity and professionalism so far. Let’s now turn on to the final of the 5 Principles and that’s the authority principle.
43

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 92. Slide 92 – Develop Authority Through Correct Practice Now, remember, it’s correct practice that makes perfect . So you want to practice and you want to practice correctly, that’s one of the key ingredients to developing authority. Why? Because competence breathes confidence and confidence is one of the key ingredients to being an authority. Now Erickson practiced a lot. He became very competent and as a result became very, very confident. Recall, his first year he taught himself hypnosis just by hypnotizing someone, by copying the technique that Clark Hull used in his demonstration. In his second year he took Clark Hulls seminar and applied it with hundreds of students in different experiments. By his third year he already started teaching it to faculty and staff in his university. He was really progressing at a tremendous rate. What is the key ingredient amongst this? 1. He had some structure to practice around, in other words he had the seminars of Clark Hull to teach him technique. 2. He had students to practice with. Again the importance of developing your own practice group, if you’re going to do it on your own and the reason why we’ve invested so much money to develop the practice groups online to be able to do voice and video chats and all that sort of stuff, is it means that you can practice any time day or night with your peers. All you have to do is make an appointment with another student and show up with them, we take care of the rest for you. In fact we even take care of a forum where you can reach out to students and get people to practice with you with. We’ve basically left no stone unturned there. We’ve also given you the exercis es that you can follow in a clear progression, which gives you something to practice that stays fresh and novel and allows you to make the kind of experiments that lead to the insights, that allow you to understand hypnosis in a way that Erickson did.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript
So correct practice makes perfect, you need to develop an environment to perfect yourself in that way, develop that competence which will in turn give you confidence. 93. Slide 93 – See One - Do One - Teach One Step number two, this is the one that most people miss and there’s an old saying in the US army and I think the British army as well, which i s ‘See one - Do one - Teach one’. Essentially you observe something and then you try it out. You get the experience of that something and then you teach or coach or help someone else along the way, in order to step up your game, so to speak. 94. Slide 94 – Getting Stumped Is Wonderful! Now there are a number of reasons this works. 1. First of all when you teach someone something or have an experience of something, both of those will at some point stump you. Being stumped is a wonderful thing! I can’t begin to tell you how much I want you to fail at something and be stumped, because that is the point where the real learnings take place. So Erickson got stumped, then he either went to Clark Hull to find out an answer or he designed experiments for himself. I’ve done most of those experiments for you to move you in a smooth progression. When invariably one of those progressions is misunderstood in some way, you have access through the practice groups, your tutors, your mentors; you have access to a forum where you can ask questions. You’ll get answers from students, from tutors, from mentors. This is a really powerful environment to resolve things like that as soon as possible. So teaching is important because it allows you to figure out where the edges of your knowledge are. I learned so much from my students because sometimes the
45
5 Principles Webinar Transcript

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript questions you ask me, they stump me. So I say this is the best answer I can give you right now, but for the next six months you’d better believe I’m going to think obsessively about that and design new experiments that lead me to becoming a better hypnotist, which of course I get to share with you on the next round. This creates a virtuous cycle going on. 2. Now the next reason I think that Erickson became such a powerful authority is he developed the identity of an authority. Now if you do follow the Diploma School, you will quickly get to appreciate just how important and just how powerful giving someone an identity to live into really is. Now think about this, Erickson as a student already was teaching and demonstrating, he stepped into the shoes of an authority way sooner than most people would think. The second thing that he did was as soon as he was allowed to, he started teaching formally. In other words, he became a professor at these universities; this really cemented his authority into himself. He had the conviction, he knew he’d done it, he had lots of stories that he could tell. In fact a lot of his stories are still at a time as a professor teaching psychology, psychiatry and of course hypnosis. And really, I have a feeling this shaped his unconscious identity to such a degree he developed what I call a self fulfilling prophecy. He became a legend because he was a legend to the individuals that he helped. 95. Slide 95 - Developing Your Own Identity Of Authority Now you don’t have to run a school of a thousand people to develop that identity. It’s enough to reach out to one, two or a do zen people. That’s why people who run their own practice groups tend to evolve more quickly, or develop their skills more quickly. 1. They have the chance to practice, but so do the people in the practice group. 2. It cements the unconscious identity of an authority deeply into your unconscious, a place where it’s unquestioning. You don’t question yourself as an authority. It means your client’s don’t question you as an authority. And it means that even if
46
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript you start out with a rickety old chair in your garage, your clients will not question you because you are there. And I’m convinced that element, the stepping up to mentor talent is one of the reasons why Erickson became great. So guiding others helps you because it: 1. Show you the gaps in your knowledge, where to go to find out more and of course then you can go to your tutors and mentors to fill that in. 2. It shapes a new identity for you, an identity of a true authority. 96. Slide 96 – Becoming The Authority Against Tough Odds Let me give you an example from a case history of an abused girl who was sexually abused as a young girl and went through a lot of therapy and she was in and out of hospitals for a long time. Then had a wonderful hypnotist started working with her and resolved so many things, anger, rage, guilt and shame and all those things good therapists will help you deal with. This is a hypnotist by the way that did this, but the point at which I knew that the girl had made the change and was safe to be in the world, was when she released her identity as a victim by finding other people with mental illnesses - she had developed a mental illness as a result of abuse you should know, or at least a ‘mental illness’. That got resolved through the work she was doing. But when she started finding people in her community that reminded her of herself, the dark places she was stuck in, that is where she released her identity as a victim and stepped into the identity of someone who is empowered. And by the way, here is something which may shock you, she stared doing this around age 19. She started getting the help she actually needed around 15, so for three years the abuse was worked on, there was a lot of work to be done there. And around 19, she transformed and my God, I wish you could see the difference in this wonderful young lady now.
47
5 Principles Webinar Transcript
©Hypnosis Training Academy All Rights Reserved
5 Principles – Webinar Transcript She’s coaching and inspiring people in their thirties who are stuck where she was when she was fifteen, that’s how powerful an authority you become once you switch the identity. So when you have that, your personal power goes through the roof and when your personal power goes through the roof, that is one of the key ingredients in H+ which again, Erickson had in truckloads. 97. Slide 97 – Becoming A Mentor In Your Community So running a practice group is a great way to become an authority because you’re giving back to community, you’re setting yourself up in that place and your community is treating you in the same ways. And of course it allows you to keep developing your relentless spirit of service, which I think is another key right there. How to we do that in the school, we have the Mentorship Program for those people who, this is totally voluntary, for those people who want to get the absolute maximum value out of this and demonstrate to us the qualities that they are going to be respectful of others and really try and support people’s talents. We’ll take them into the Mentorship Program, where they can then share the benefits of their experiences with others and then do exactly what we’ve described. You can still do this as you progress to the more advanced lessons or even once you’ve left the school, you can keep coming back to cement that identity into yourself as well. Provided of course that you’re showing the qualities we want from a mentor , which of course will be made more clear at that level. But really importantly, this allows you to step into the right identity and when your unconscious mind grabs onto an identity, it will move heaven and earth for you, it will make all the changes you need, it will make you the au thority. You just won’t even consider questioning yourself in the negative sense. There will still be room for you to question if the approach was right, whether you have something to grow from, which is very important.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript 98. Slide 98 – Being A Force For Good We don’t want a narcissist, we want competent, confident people out there doing amazing work being an amazing force for good, being the kind of elite hypnotist that others will look at and go, how the heck did you do that? And I think this is one of the key ingredients to get to that point. Okay and of course learning from your mistakes and also the mistakes of others in the industry is a really important thing. Let me share with you more of the key mistakes that most hypnotists fall into that makes them ‘unprofessional.’ And I don’t mean that as an insult to them, I think their skill set as a hypnotist is amazing, there are some great hypnotists out there, but the reason they’re struggling at around $15k a year is because they don’t apply the same principles they do to clients, to their communities. As a result, and I’ve seen this happen, it’s a very sad thing to witness happening when a competent, amazing hypnotist or therapist is not getting the clients they could serve because of the miscommunication essentially, right? 99. Slide 99 – People Are Frightened By Hypnotist’s Why aren’t people flocking to a lot of hypnotist’s practices ? And psychotherapists and private practices are in the exact same boat, it’s because people are frightened. They are frightened by the hypnotist who’s trying to inspire them to work with them and it’s because the sales tactics that are being used currently by most hypnotherapists from adverts in the paper, through the way they handle phone calls or the way they talk to their community frightens them. And I know this first hand because I really put off my entire group of friends, my social group in London when I started as a hypnotist by telling them about how amazing I could be and eventually they wanted no more of it. They just didn’t want to hear any more about that. It wasn’t until I radically altered my style that I suddenly started getting the kind of clients, the kind of success that I wanted to.

Slide 100 – Do What Successful People Are Doing
Of course I’ve already given the secret of that. Look at what successful people are doing and educate yourself about that and develop your sense of authority about that. Develop your personal power, your conversational skills and treat people in your community with the same kind of respect and support you treat your clients with. This reminds me about another psychotherapist who is learning hypnosis with me, because her private practice was struggling and this little switch alone totally revolutionized it. In fact she was selling her apartment and she inspired the real estate agent, who’s coming to sell her on her services, in other words to sell her home for her. She inspired her so well that this person ended up becoming a client as a result. She’s now on the verge of starting to thrive as a hypnotherapist, who was a psychotherapist in private practice. Why? Because she made the switch from what is a pseudo-professional to what is a true professional. And again I think Erickson has a lot of lessons for us there and I hope I’ve shared with you what those are. 101.
Slide 101 – Recap Of What It Takes To Be A True Professional
Just to kind of map out the list of what makes you a true professional so you have the journey you can take on your own if that’s where you want to go with this. 1. You want to be a true force for good. And the more impeccable you are about that, in other words the more you strive for that in every aspect of your life, even the bits that no one sees. The more you step into the identity of being a force for good, the more it feeds into your personal authority and the more clients will respond to your unconscious signals. 2. You want to develop a set of tools that makes changing other people’s perceptions easy. Not just in the therapy room, but inside of your community.

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript Let me put it this way, if someone is not inspired to work with you with a condition like say smoking or a life threatening condition, then they’re basically saying they’d rather risk dying than to work with you. Because they’ll take the cancer risk for cigarettes, a health risk of heart disease or whatever else might be present if they’re overweight or obese. They’d rather risk an early death than work with you because something in your conversation has depressed them so much. So you’ve got to be able to switch the perceptions easily in a conversation so that they’re inspired to work with you, there’s no sale required. People will start knocking on your door asking to work with them when you treat them in these ways. The secret in that by the way, lies in the power of Conversational Hypnosis and that’s why we have a two year segment on Applied Conversational Hypnosis to learn to do exactly that. Now just to be clear, the Professional Skills Coaching course combined with the Applied Conversational Hypnosis segment will not teach you any sleazy sales tactics, any strong arm manipulation or anything like that. Those have gone right out the window. In fact some things that you currently think are okay, will probably go out the window too as soon as you see a professional in action. And instead, as far as I’m concerned, having a healthy income should almost be a side effect of being a true professional. This is what happened to Erickson. Because of the way he worked inside of his community, the way he related to his community, the way he built relationships in his community, he had a waiting list for people coming to try and work with him. He was never short of work even though in terms of classical marketing he was doing everything wrong. He had a listing in the telephone directory as, I believe, as a family doctor, a family therapist; that was it. So he built the right kind of relationships that had people want to come and work with him. Not a cent in advertising is required. He had of course the respect of the doctors of the medical communities, the psychiatrists and so on and again, the Professional Skills Coaching course, the more advance levels, I’ll show you how to build those relationships also. He had the love, respect and admiration of his clients, his patients, which meant his patient’s couldn’t wait to refer people to him. If your clients are not referring to you
51
5 Principles Webinar Transcript

5 Principles – Webinar Transcript routinely, there’s something missing in your relationship. You’ve got to build a slight ly better one so they want to refer to you. Erickson was so busy that he was literally working until he drew his last breath. In fact the very day that he passed away, he had a seminar class coming in and they were waiting for him in the garage when Betty, Erickson’s wife, came down and gave them the very sad news that there would be no classes today because Erickson had now passed away. And he didn’t have to do any marketing for that in the traditional sense, there w ere definitely no emails or websites or anything like that, but there was no advertising in the paper, either. It was purely based around being a consummate professional that built deep relationships with his community, so his community couldn’t wait to work with him. And again, that is something we’ll explore in the Professional S kills Coaching course and the Applied Conversational Hypnosis course, and you still have the ability to do this on your own if that’s the path you wish to follow along. 102.
Slide 102 – Lots And Lots Of Bonuses & Secret Surprises
Now something you should know about the school, these are all the aspects of the school that mirror Erickson’s journey. There are other bonuses included as well that I’m going to briefly remark on so you have the whole picture there. We have home study programs, video courses of seminars where you can learn the core skills as well. So you can have that as a backup, so once you come to the live seminars you’ll be able to review the same lessons on the home study portions. You’ll have a ton of workbooks, guides that follow your progression and cl early outline what lesson you’re currently at, what exercises you need to do, what experiments you need to do and work on. Transcript manuals of course, galore. There’ll be some secret surprises, which of course I’m keeping secret, otherwise they won’t be a surprise. But trust me, when you find them, you’ll really enjoy them.

Slide 103 – Becoming The Hypnosis Industry Standard
As I mentioned before, you have live workshops throughout the two year journey we’ll be taking together, which means you’ll get to three different levels of certifications of those. Plus of course the additional certification of a certified professional hypnotherapist, which we’re reserving only for people who pass the two year Diploma School, because I honestly believe this will become such an industry standard that when people see Certified Professional Hypnotherapists and the Diploma School logo attached to that, they will know this is the mark of quality. This is someone I can trust and rely on. And who’s going to be building that reputation? Only those graduates of the school that deserve the label of being a true professional hypnotherapist. So you become part of the greater community that picks up the perception, the work of who we are and what we can do precisely based around what we are doing here. 104.
Slide 104 – Starting Your Hypnotherapy Practice Quickly
And remember of course, because the very first of those certifications, the live certifications in terms of a live workshop, you can take those early on, within the first few months of starting the Diploma School. We’ve got them spaced out throughout the year so you have access to that. You will be able to start in your private practice really within a few months of joining the school, because you’ll have the basic core sk ill necessary. And of course as you progress through the rest of the course you will really evolve your skills into someone who can really be called a professional. So I hope you’ve enjoyed this seminar so far and that you’ve developed an appreciation of the 5 Principles that allow you to become a legend like Erickson did. Now I’ve talked a lot about the Diploma School, partly because I’m very excited by it and partly also to illustrate it in action. Whether or not you join the school is not the important part, for you at least, what’s really important for me from this seminar is that you apply those lessons.

Slide 105 – Being Accepted As A Student
Now if you do like the idea of the school there are some things that you will need to bring to the table to be accepted into the school. So first of all you’ll need to bring a good attitude, because you’re going to be part of a social environment that’s going to distill a professional attitude. A professional attitude is a good attitude. I have never seen a single professional that whines and complains and finds excuses, they just have good attitudes. You have to bring a genuine desire to learn. If you come with a full cup so to speak, then there’s not much I can do for you. The road map I’ve laid out for you is one that if you follow it, I have every conviction will lead you to becoming one of the elite level hypnotists in the world, but you have to have the desire to follow that road map. You’ve got to have a genuine desire to be a force for good in the wor ld, to help heal the world one person at a time. This again goes into your professionalism and again is a really important attitude that I know Erickson had and I share with him on that level, and you need to have that too. Of course we’ll help you develop it further as part of being part of the right environment, but you have to want that and be willing to work to get that. You also need to have a genuine desire to serve your community. You’ll be practicing that initially online with your fellow students just by showing up, just doing practice sessions as well as doing the work with each other. But it will also show your support in the forum by caring for other students in this environment and therefore earning the right to be supported by them when you’re in need as well. This is one of the key ingredients we’ll look for in those students who want to go through the full course and take the mentorship program as well. There’s no fee attached to the Mentoring Program, it’s totally free, we just need the right people in that and that’s what we’re looking for. More on that of course when we have a conversation, if that’s of interest to you.

Slide 106 – How To Succeed In The Diploma School
The way to succeed with the Diploma School is to put aside one hour of your day to do something. You’ll either listen to one of the weekly lessons, or you’ll practice the lesson exercises from that lesson with your practice groups. And remember, we have the four key streams there, the Professional Skills Coaching course that teaches you how to be a professional. The Applied Conversational Hypnosis course that is part of being a professional and part of having the kind of powerful conversations that Erickson had within which the hypnosis works. The Hypnotherapy Skills Coaching to be a great hypnotherapist, and the Mind Training Skills to basically develop your own mind and your own personal power and navigate your own trances more effectively as well. All that’s required is about an hour a day and for the most part you ca n choose when you do that. Of course the online practice groups have a set schedule that you’ll need to come to at that point. But if you have odd hours that you’re working on , you can still meet up with other students at those odd hours and still work. So you can still fit this within your lifestyle. This school has been designed so that a single parent that’s working full time still has enough time to work, look after the kids and succeed at this school. Yes, you’ll have to make an effort. Yes, you’ll get out what you put into this, but one hour a day is all that’s required and you’re on the right track. The next thing that’s required is a passion. You’ve got to want to be an elite level hypnotist because hypnosis takes practice. It’s a fun and rewarding thing to practice, but I can’t do it for you, nobody can do it for you. Hy pnosis is not a spectator sport; you get good with hypnosis by doing hypnosis. 107.
Slide 107 – It’s Simple and Step By Step
Now in terms of the school, we’ve done our part by designi ng the step by step journey that I’ve just described to you. You can mirror that journey on your own, you have all the essential ingredients there now.

But if you want to have everything laid out for you in a step by step progression that’s drip fed to you in a way that you won’t feel overloaded or overwhelmed, remember it just takes one hour a day for the two years of the journey. And of course there’s time for holiday breaks there too. Then this may well be something that you want to explore. This is hands down the kind of school that I wish had existed when I first started hypnosis way, way, way back when. I guarantee it would have shaved at least ten years, probably more off of my own learning curve. We might actually be having this conversation ten years ago now if I had had a school like this to help develop me. 108.
Slide 108 – How To Begin An Amazing Journey
That’s why I’m so excited to share it with you. As far as the school and this seminar are concerned, that’s pretty much it now. One thing you should know is that unfortunately you cannot join this school today, because remember the list of qualities we’ve been looking for, we need to be sure that the right people join the school, because people who join the school will represent what we stand for. And I want to create elite level hypnotists who go out and be a force for good in the world, whether they do it formally as a professional hypnotherapist or informally as a parent, teacher, mentor, guide or whatever, it doesn’t matter. So that means unfortunately I can’t just take everyone on board straight away, this is not a regular seminar, we want to make sure it’s a good match. So the first thing we do is that you and I have to have a talk to make sure this training is a good fit for you and of course for the school as well. And if what I’ve described already has you excited and motivated, if you’re interested in having a chat with me, then your next step is really simple, it’s to connect with me by sending me your contact details and to do that all you need to do is visit the following website, so get a pen and paper handy or type into your web browser right now www.hypnosistrainingacademy.com/diploma.

So if you go to that site right now, that’s www.hypnosistrainingacademy.com/diploma, if you go right now, there’s a little form for you to fill out. Fill that form out ; that will give me your contract details, etc. Once you’ve done that I will send to you my personal diary by email. Now, I have freed up time to talk with a limited amount of people, even though I’ve got a lot of stuff on, this is so important to me that I will do the call with you in person to make sure that we’re in the right place together. So once you do that, you’ll get my diary, you’ll choose one of the available slots I’ve put out there and then I’ll call you, we’ll have a chat. Now, in that chat I will make sure to answer any questions you have about the school and the journey we’re going to take together and I’ll of course be asking some questions of my own. And if within that process we both feel this is a good fit for both of us, then we’re going to go ahead to the final step and do the whole enrollment process. Now, if there’s any disconnect in that process, in that conversation, rest assured I’m going to let you know where I think that disconnect is and I will personally guide you through the steps I think you need to take in order to achieve the outcomes that I think you want, even if that outcome is not with us. For example, if you want to be an elite level hypnotist with influence skills, then I can really help you. If you’re willing to do the drills to get the skills, then I can absolutely help you get there faster than you’ll ever believe. But if you’re looking for say, a magic pill to swallow about how to become a great hypnotist while watching reruns of Happy Days or something like that, then this is not the school for you. There’s other ways that you can interact with us, there’s home study programs, there’s live seminars that may be something that serves you better. This is only for people who want to be exceptional in this field and who recognize that they will get out of this whatever they put into it. It’s going to be really rewarding and you’ve got to want to have that rewarding feeling…let’s put it this way. I’m positive that people who certify through the diploma course as a certified professional hypnotherapist, that that label will quickly become the most sought after hypnosis certification in the world.
