The Changing Vision and Mission of Research in Higher Education Education Amidst Amidst Globa Globaliza lization tion It has greatly been said that the word has changed more fundamentally in the last fifty years than in the five hundred years before that. And in so many words, Bill Gates has predicted that the next five years will see more paradigmatic changes than in last fifty. Globalization is widely bandied about in international conferences, but no word is more loosely defined or more emotionally laden. The phenomenon it describes is indeed too pervasive and far-reaching to ignore, but the word globalization tends to reduce this complex reality to a specific set of consequences, often negative and often limited to the economic. Globalization as it the phenomenon of increasing multi-dimensional interdependence. This interdependence permeates all spheres – political, economic, and socio-cultural – and there is no turning back to a less interdependent world. To respond to this changing interdependence world, what is needed is clearly a new vision for education, not just for the information dissemination, or for skilled development, or for skills development, or for citizenship, but for empowering individual and communities to thrive and contribute by guiding this onslaught towards greater more equitable interdependen interdependence ce among communities communities and countries countries – in political, political, and socioeconomic spheres.

THE TRENDS 5
And what alarms us, and what should alarm the university community as well, is something not spoken enough about: These changes will not be logical extrapolations of present trends; they will come from out of the blue, from out of a yet inchoate set of premises, they will be as it were un-anticipatable changes. The future is not what it used to be; changes will not just quantitative, but qualitative. And universities must prepare societies to handle these.
