Prayer of St. Gregory
By Alan Hovhaness Arranged for two trumpets in B-flat by Livingston Gearhart
Pianist, composer and arranger Livingston Gearhart ( – ) attended the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied oboe with Marcel Tabuteau, piano with Nadia Reisenberg, and composition with Rosario Scalero. His composition teachers in France included Nadia Boulanger, Igor Stravinsky, and Darius Milhaud. Under Columbia Artists management for years, the two-piano team of Morley and Gearhart performed over concerts throughout the and Canada and recorded for Columbia Masterworks and Decca Records. From to , Gearhart made numerous and radio appearances on the Fred Waring Show, for which he also served as a staff arranger. With his wife Pamela, violinist and conductor, he co-founded Youth Makes Music, a summer camp in Alabama for young string players. In , Gearhart joined the music faculty at the University of Buffalo, retiring in as Professor Emeritus. A substantial collection of writings and manuscripts are currently housed in the at Buffalo Music Library. Gearhart’s two-piano manuscripts are held in the Fred Waring’s American collection at Penn State University. Livingston Gearhart created the arrangement of the two-trumpet part to the Hovhaness Prayer of St. Gregory for a young trumpet player to perform with his teacher with a string orchestra. This arrangement may be used with both the trumpet and strings original and the organ reduction, published by Peer International. The arrangement was performed once in Alabama sometime in the s, and not again until Livingston’s wife, Pamela, then conductor of the Ithaca College Orchestra, asked Kim and Jane Dunnick to play it for the memorial service for retired trumpet professor Herbert Mueller. Mrs. Gearhart has generously donated the arrangement to the members of the ITG in memory of her husband and hopes it will be played often, both with strings and with organ or piano.
This is an arrangement of the trumpet part that works with the accompaniment published by Peer International.
