0he ollo"ing 8m 0echni+ue o 7editation/and every other meditation techni+ue that is given in these essons/should be practiced in your spiritual temple, the room or corner o a room that you have set aside or meditation and spiritual study. % by chance you have not yet established such a place, ma#e it a point to do so no". >very location relects the vibrations o the occupation or "hich it is used- thereore you should set aside some place that may become permeated "ith spiritual vibrations o prayer and $od6contemplation. 0hus its atmosphere "ill be especially conducive to meditation.
$o to your spiritual temple and prepare to practice the 8m 0echni+ue o 7editation. You "ill need a small table, about as high as your chest "hen you are seated, and a straight chair covered "ith a "oolen blan#et that e?tends do"n under your eet (to insulate you rom earth currents . ay a pillo" on the table. 0hen seat yoursel and place your elbo"s on the pillo". 0he elbo"s should be just high enough so that you have no diiculty in reaching the ears "ith the thumbsthe spine and head must be held straight at the same time. 0his matter o position is very important, as the spine must be erect. You "ill have to e?periment, adding more pillo"s to the table i necessary, until the right height is reached or maintaining the proper position in comort. METHOD O$ PRACTICE
$od has enabled you, by means o your eyelids, to close your eyes and shut o distractions during meditation- =e has also given you 3earlids3 to shut o mind6diverting sounds during deep concentration. 0hese are the cartilaginous laps (called tragi at the e?ternal ear openings. *ith your thumbs push them gently in so that they close the ear holes, serving as stoppers to shut out outer sounds. &uring meditation the thumbs tend to loosen their pressure, so at the outset press irmly enough "ith the thumbs to close the tragi comortably tight over the ear openings and thus shut out e?ternal sounds as much as possible. otton may be used i you have sensitive ears. *hen you have placed your thumbs gently over the ear openings, place your little ingers over the lo"ered eyelids, at the outer corners. ery gently press against the eyeballs so that they do not move restlessly. Place the other ingers o both hands on the orehead. 0urning the eyeballs up"ard and in"ard, converge your ga)e at the central point in your orehead above and bet"een the eyebro"s. Practice "ill ma#e it easy. 0his practice is beneicial to the eyesight "hen rightly done as described in this esson. @eep your eyes i?ed at this hrist onsciousness center or longer and longer periods "hen you practice. 0his "ill train the optic nerves and eyeballs to adjust easily to the position and thus permit the ree ocusing o the optical currents o the t"o physical eyes into the one spiritual eye. 1t irst you may be satisied "ith trying to #eep your eyes i?ed at the point bet"een the eyebro"s. 1ter practice, ho"ever, you "ill be able to do this so that the eyelids don't +uiver, and the eyeballs do not move. 0hen you may see a e" lights occasionally. % you do see any light, concentrate on it. By learning to ocus your eyes in this "ay and by concentrating on any light that you see, you are preparing to see the astral light o the spiritual eye/a luminous sun, "ith a dar# round spot inside it and a star inside the dar# spot. 0his third eye/the door to t he %ninite/is mentioned in 7atthe" A299. 3% thereore thine eye be single, thy "hole body shall be ull o light.3 7any other lights "ill come, but no matter ho" long you have to practice do not be satisied until you get the one mentioned above. Should you be bothered "ith hallucinations, #eep the eyes open, turned up"ard, and i?ed on the point bet"een the eyebro"s.
*ith your eyes i?ed in this position/or on the astral light that "ill appear through practice/ mentally chant, 38m, 8m3 (ma#ing no sound, nor any movement o the tongue . @eep listening in the inside o the right ear to any vibratory sound you hear. Reverently be one "ith the vibration. You may hear in the beginning the purely physical vibratory sounds caused by the heart, lungs, diaphragm movement, circulation, and so orth. $o deeper. 1s you continue to listen, your concentration "ill deepen o itsel and you "ill begin to hear the musical vibratory sounds o the subtle astral centers in the spine. oncentrate "ith the greatest intensity o mental eort on any sound vibration that comes to you, and be one "ith it. %mmerse your mind in it. et the mental chanting o 8m and the holding o the eyes in the upturned position be done automatically/"ithout mental eort. 1ll your concentration should be on listening to the dierent vibrations you "ill hear, irst the physical and then, as you listen more deeply, the astral. 0here "ill come a time "hen you can hear the 8m sound/"hich is li#e the roar o the ocean. % by chance you hear the ocean6roar sound irst, you "on't have to concentrate on any other sound. isten intently to 8m and eel your consciousness e?panding "ith its vibrations, li#e an ever enlarging sphere, into eternity. You may be content that you are ma#ing progress to"ard hearing the real 8m sound "hen you hear in the right ear the sound o a great gong or bell emanating rom the dorsal center in the spine, opposite the heart. ariations o the 8m sound emanate rom the various cerebrospinal centers. 1ll o these sounds "ill come to you by and by, through regular, deep practice o the 8m 0echni+ue o 7editation. 0he our lo"er centers in the cerebrospinal a?is control the elements in man o earth, "ater, ire, and air. 0he vibratory activities o each center produce a characteristic sound. %n meditation the yogi may hear irst the hum, as o a bumblebee, emitted by the earth or coccygeal center at the base o the spine. 0he "ater or sacral center has a luteli#e sound- the ire or lumbar center a harpli#e sound- and the air or dorsal center a bell6li#e sound. 0he etheric or cervical center, at the base o the nec# "here it joins the spine, emanates a sound as o rushing "aters- and at the medulla oblongata the deeply meditating yogi hears the symphony o all sounds together/the oceanic roar o the osmic 8m ibration. %t is this symphony o sound that you are striving to hear, above all, "hen you practice the Sel6Reali)ation ello"ship 8m 0echni+ue o 7editation. 1ter you have practiced listening or the 8m, you may put orth active mental eort once or t"ice to see the light o the spiritual eye in the orehead. By practicing aithully you "ill be able al"ays to see the light "ith closed eyes, "hile hearing the vibrations "ith closed ears. %t ta#es long practice to be able to see the light at "ill "ith open eyes. *hen one can do that, it sho"s distinct spiritual advancement. =o"ever, listening or 8m is the most important, more important than seeing the light. 0his cosmic sound, e?pression o the ause o creation, is omnipresent- hence by being one "ith it, one ac+uires the same +uality o consciousness.

Practice this techni+ue or ten to iteen minutes during your meditation in the morning- t"enty to thirty minutes or longer "hen you meditate beore bed. Bo" mentally to $od "hen you are through. Both intensity o mental eort "hile practicing and duration o practice are needed to reach higher and higher states o concentration. % time allo"s, listen or the 8m sound longer than the period suggested. 1side rom the inner e?periences o astral sounds, there also arises a great calmness. =old to that calm during and ater meditation as long as it is possible or you to do so. 1pply that calmness in the practical situations o lie/in dealing "ith people, in studying, in business, in thin#ing, in controlling yoursel, in getting rid o any i?ed mental or physiological habit or condition that you consider unnecessary or harmul, and so orth. *henever situations demand discrimination and "ise action, recall immediately the calmness elt during and ater concentration- all right into that mood, and meet situations rom that calm center. *hile practicing concentration, deep intensity o mind is necessary, but there should be no eeling o physical or mental strain. Hong Sau Your Breath • After the preliminary breathing exercises, you should cease any eort to control the breath. • et it !o" naturally. • #ou may notice that the pauses bet"een the inhalation and exhalation are gradually becoming longer. • $n%oy these pauses, for they are a glimpse of the deep state of ad&anced meditation. • As you gro" &ery calm, your breath may become so shallo". • 'he pauses may become so prolonged, that it hardly seems necessary to breathe at all. • (o not be alarmed. 'his is good) Hong-Sau Technique of Concentration • *o" "ait for the next breath to come in of its o"n accord. • +hen it does, mentally say Hong rhymes "ith song. • (ont hold the breath, but exhale naturally. • As you do, mentally say Sau rhymes "ith sa". • Hong-Sau is an ancient Sansrit mantra • A mantra is a "ord, syllable, or group of syllables, "hich can con&ey spiritual po"er. • 0t is important to pronounce the mantra correctly, and often "ith repetition. • 0t means 10 am He2 or 10 am Spirit.2 • 'ry to feel that your breath itself is silently maing the sounds of Hong and Sau. • 3ae no attempt to control your breath. • Simply obser&e it as it !o"s in and out naturally. • 0n the beginning you may be mostly a"are of the physical manifestation of the breathing process. • #our a"areness may include your diaphragm and chest expanding and contracting. • As your breath gro"s calmer, ho"e&er, try to become a"are of its !o" in the nostrils. • 4radually transfer your a"areness higher and higher in the nasal passages. • +ith the eyes closed, turn your ga5e up"ard to the point mid"ay bet"een the eyebro"s "ithin your forehead. • 6oncentrate there. • 'his is the seat of spiritual consciousness in the body, also called the spiritual eye, or 6hrist 6enter. • 0n time, try to feel the !o" of the breath near the spiritual eye "ithin
your forehead. • 7eep your ga5e steady at the point bet"een the eyebro"s throughout your practice. • (ont allo" your eyes to follo" the mo&ement of the breath. • 0f you 8nd that your mind has "andered, gently bring it bac to an a"areness of the breath and the mantra. • 9inish your practice of Hong-Sau by inhaling once through the nose, then exhaling three times through the mouth. • 9orget the breath. • 6oncentrate deeply at the point bet"een the eyebro"s. • 7eep your mind focused and your energy internali5ed. Absorb yourself in the peace generated by your practice. • 6ontinue for at least 8&e minutes. • 9inish "ith a prayer to the (i&ine, oering yourself into the light of 4od. Where to meditate...
0f possible, set aside an area that is used exclusi&ely for meditation. 0n time it "ill become saturated "ith spiritual &ibrations. A small room, a corner of your bedroom, or e&en closet can suce, as long as it is "ell &entilated. All you really need is a chair or small cushion to sit on, and perhaps a small altar. 9ace $ast if possible, and place a "ool or sil blanet on the !oor to insulate your body from the subtle magnetic currents of the earth.
