It was the foreign Office they told her that they have found the dead body of her grandfather which appeared out of the Matterhorn. Clare decided to pick up her grandfather’s grandfather’s body. Marjorie wasn’t really surprise about the telephone call, because she ha got a letter from the authorities about her father six months ago. Clare made tea for them and then her mother told her Andrew everything. Andrew told his wife that he won’t come home he will stay with his mother. Marjorie was very happy because her children were with her. Marjorie handed Clare two letters. Both were from her father, he had written them four years before he had died. The letters told that he wouln’t come come back home to his family and that he had made an arrangement w ith the bank, so they had an account on which was a lot of money for them. When Clare came in Zermatt, she went to hotel and had dinner. After that she went to the bar an she in’t like people chatting about her grandfather. The next morning Clare we nt to the police station. Police officer told her that her grandfather had been taken away for a post mortem examination. After Clare left the station she went into the museum. She was very interested in it. There she found a photo of Gordon Younger who had died the same year like her grandfather did. She also read much about very good climber. His name is Ulrich Grunwalder. She decided to search for Mr. Grunwalder to ask him about about her grandfather. After she had found him, she asked him if he knew something about Edward. But he said that he didn't know Edward. There were a lot of English people at this time. Ulrich was a really young and busy man. Ulrich was a climbing-guide for one year and Ulrich started climbing with his father who had died 4 years ago. Marianne, Ulrich's sister, had to go down to the village to look after the little daughter, Marjorie, one of the guest families, of her cousin hotel, for a few days. Ulrich decided t o come with his sister, to provide her to make mistake. When they t hey joined their cousin hotel (Monte Rosa) they found out that they two are going to be employed by the same person Mr. and Mrs. Crow. On Wednesday morning Mr. Crow and Ulrich started their climb. The next day they returned to Zermatt, and Mr. Crow was satisfied. Ulrich’s mother wanted his sister to get married, m arried, because she was still twenty three years old. Marianne told her brother that she loved Mr. Crow. The next morning, Clare de cided to go back to the Alpine Museum to see if they ha any recors of her granfather’s climb up the Matterhorn. But she in’t fin anything in the Museum Museum about some records of climbing climbing the Matterhorn. Clare remembered picture of climber who had died in 1924, but his name was Gordon Younger. The manager of the Museum told her to ask Ulrich G runwalder. Clare left the museum, and then she went to ski school office and after some minutes she had a private teacher. The next day she was going to improve her skiing. After some moments she forgot her grandfather and Mr. Grunwalder and she skied behind Bruno and concentrated on staying on her feet. After skiing, Bruno asked Clare for a drink in the hotel bar of Monte Rosa. They saw that they have much in common and then they went in to nightclub to dance. They made an arrangement for the next day to improve Clare's skiing more.
Next morning she had breakfast and then she dec ided to go to the police station. Police officer told her that the results of the test had shown that this was her grandfather. Clare wanted to see the dead body of her grandfather, but Officer said that it wasn't a good idea. In the wallet, which police officer gave her, there was a photograph of her mother at the age about three. Clare told an officer about the museum and that she didn't find anything. Officer was surprised and told her that he had heard that her grandfather was climbing with Gordon Younger. Clare was fee ling confused when she left the police station, because nobody told her this but everyone knew about it. At her hotel she booked her flight for Monday and then she called Kevin, her boss. The next person she wanted to ask about Ulrich Grunwalder was Bruno because Grunwalder was also a guide. She hoped that Bruno would help her to fix a meeting with Mr. Grunwaler. Next ay, she in’t enjoy the skiing. She aske Bruno if he knew something about Ulrich Grunwalder and he said that Ulrich was his grandfather. Bruno said that his grandfather had indeed been the climbing guide for Crow and Younger on their last e xpedition. He also told her that something was strange at this expedition. The next morning Bruno and Clare entered Ulrich's house. Clare asked Mr. Grunwalder about her grandfather’s death. Grunwalder said that it was an accident. There was Gordon Younger with them. When he was on the other side of the glacier he saw that the two men were on the rope at the same time. Both have fallen down. Clare asked him how he managed to stop his falling too. He answered, that he had been at the other side of the glacier. He also told her that the next day he had gone up with a group of men to find the bodies. They found the two bodies but they had bee n only able to save the dead body of Mr. Younger but when they were rescuing Mr. Crow’s body the rope broke and so his body has fallen even more. He also told Clare that Edward had been in love with Marianne, his sister. But Mr. Crow had been married to Agatha. Agat ha told Mr. Younger to climb with Edward to the top of the Matterhorn but he should have also persuaded Edward to return home to her. But Younger had been in love with Agatha. So he ha trie to kill Ewar. But Mr. Grunwaler in’t know if it was an accient or not. Clare was very pleased, to know the true story. The next day Clare and Bruno went out for a walk. They chatted about their life, their families and their future. When they returned t o Clare's room they exchanged their address. They knew that t hey have fallen in love during this walk. Later that evening she rang Kevin. Clare left Zermatt early the next morning. At the train station she thought of Bruno and her family. Then Andrew phoned her. When she was at home she phoned her friends and later she phoned Bruno. After they ha chatte Clare felt better. After the call she rea the “Daily News”. S he was shocke about the healine. “WAS HE PUSHED OR DID HE FALL?” She was very angry about Kevin. Her mother was very sad about her. Clare called Kevin and told him that he was a bastard. Clare felt very sorry about this. She decided to stay overnight. She said, that she would have an interview with Cherry Gaskell on Friay, an that woul be her first job away from the “Daily News”. Clare was very happy that her mother and her brother gave her a second chance. After the next morning Clare drove back to London. Bruno phoned her. They made plans for Bruno to come to London in two weeks. Clare fe lt that this relationship was also a new start for her. * Clare Newton: forty-six year old.A journalist.Lives in London. She is very brave and smart, but unpredictable. She is not looking for a serious relationship and she is dissatisfied with her life. She had very boring life in London. She is com pletly devoted to her job.She is a curious person, had lack of job satisfaction. She loved her proffesion.Clare’s personality is very good . * Andrew Newton:younger brother of Clare. He is married to Jan.He is worried for his sister and mother’s lonely life and he loves them very much , he cares a lot about his sister and he is a very good man. * Marjorie Newton is in her late seventies, she is mother of Clare and Andrew.Married to Thomas Newton, who died a year before story beg ins.She had a very painful child life because she lost her father at year of 5 and she was raised just by mother.
* Edward Crowe is grandfather of Clare and Andrew’s father of Marjorie.Married to Agatha. He was very selfish man ,because he left his wife and children because of other woman. He was killed in the mountain in Zermatt. * Bruno is in his early forties ,ski instruktor and mountain guide, grandson of Ulrich Grunwalder. He fell in love with Clare Newton ,and he loves her .He is divorced and had two children. He loves mountaineering. He had much in common with Clare but he is unsure about new relationship. * Ulrich Grunwalder is ninety-four-years-old mountain guide ,lives in Zermmat. He lost his father when he was 20 years old.He became a best mountain guide in Zermatt ,He is Grandfather of Bruno. * I think that “In the shadow of the mountain“ is well worth reading because it is an interesting and unpredictable novel. The personalities of the charachters change with the plot and you discover the mystery. The plot had your attention to the very end,but it does not have excitement. The problem i see with this book is that Clare believes the elerly mountain guie’s story about her granfather’s eath as the truth .There is no proof given to back up his story, however. This is a major flaw in the book ,which oterwise would have been pretty good. The best part of this book is the mysterious atmosphere.I like Clare’s personality an the love story she lives. The worst part of the novel is the end .I expected interesanting story at the end ,something more surprising than the real end of the book . * This book had mystery and it’s very unpredictable. It is a highly entertaining book for fans of intrigue and love stories and I definitely recommend that they add t his book to their collection.
