Chandragupta III (Purugupta ?), Gold Dinar (Less content of Gold), Chakra Type, Obv: king standing left, holding an arrow in his right hand and holding indian long bow at top in left hand, sword at his hip, “Chandra” in brahmi below right arm, garudadhvaja to left and Chakra on the top of garudadvaja, circular brahmi legend, Rev: goddess lakshmi seated facing on a stylized lotus in padmasana, holding lotus blossom and diadem, tamgha to left, brahmi legend at right ’Sri Vikramah’,8.55g, 19.39mm, about very fine, Very Rare Estimate : ` 55,000-65,000 The recent article of Dr. Pankaj Tandon in Numismatic Digest Vol 38 shows complete comparative study on these coins and very much clears the doubt of Purugupta and Chandragupta III being one and the same person. Now what important clarification he clears is that why Purugupta have used the name Chandra on his coins? One possible justifying reason is that Purugupta wanting to wrap himself in the mantle of his grandfather’s glory. Because Chandragupta II also had done the same with his own grandfather name. Given the precedent of one king taking the name of his grandfather, it seems quite possible that Purugupta may have done the same especially if he felt weak in the face of his powerful and heroic half-brother and felt that including his glorious grandfather’s name would emphasize his lineage and legitimacy over that of his half-brother and would bring himself more glory.

The interesting point to note on this specimen is JHAR LEAF mark which usually appears on the coins from the Rajputana states. The thought could be given to the point that adoption of Jhar leaf is mainly because of showing the alliance between the Mughal and Rajputs after Akbar got married to Heer Kunwari alias Jodha Bai. But bearing a clear mint name Katak/Cuttack which is located on the other side again raises one more question that why Jhar leaf in Katak mint coin.

Patna was taken by Akbar in person in AH 982 from daud, the son of Sulaiman Kararani King of Bengal. In 1573 AD Munim Khan attacked Bihar, forcing Daud to retreat and take shelter in Patna. Daud sent Katlu Lohani, Gujar Khan Karrani and Sri Hari against the Mughal army. From the Akbar’s army Munim Khan, along with Todar Mal and Mansingh, made the first attack in Hajipur. After a fierce battle, the Bengals and Afghans were at the verge of victory. However, Akbar then re-captured the neighbouring fort of Hajipur, which was the source of rations for the army of his opponent. The Bengalis along with Afghans fell in distress and retreated to Bengal. Akbar returned to the capital after appointing Munim Khan as the governor of Bihar and Bengal. Todar Mal was also left to assist him.

This particular specimen is a mismatch of both the KM# 105.2 & 106.3 and does not qualify in any of these two references. KM # 106.3 lists as without Sultan for the type but this specimen clearly shows on top the persian script azam and in second line khuld allahu talaa which comes before sultanahu (missed from the flan).

Jaunpur located in Uttar Pradesh which was once ruled by the Sharqi rulers. Akbar has issued silver and gold coins regularly from AH 964 to AH 989 from this mint.

This specimen is of an exceptional beauty and high importance which is probably not offered in auctions for over a long time. Listed in the book as RRR on the rarity scale.

Kalima within quaterfoil and names of the khalifas mint name in center, mint which accompanied the imperial army camp struck coins in route and had been named Urdu or Urdu Zafar Qarin. Both camp mints as “Urdu” literally means (Army camp) and “Urdu Zafar Qarin”similarly means army camp associated with the victory. Coins from this series were also used for Akbar’s crew during the stay in various parts of his control.

History of Mandu - Mandu urf Shadiabad is presently located in Mandavgadh in the Mandav area of the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. The earliest reference to Mandu is available in the Sanskrit inscription of 555 AD, which tells that Mandu was a fortified city even in the 6th century BC. It gained prominence in 10th & 11th century under the rule of Rajput Parmars who called it Mandavgarh, from whom the control was snatched by Khiljis in 1305 AD. Then the famous ruler Allauddin Khilji named Mandav as Shadiabad which means the city of happiness Anand Nagari. And towards the end of the 11th century it came under the sway of the Taranga kingdom. Mandu’s Golden Age –When Timur captured Delhi in the year 1401 AD, the Afghan Dilawar Khan then governor of Malwa sets up his own little kingdom and the Ghuri dynasty was established. His son Hoshang Shah, shifted the capital from Dhar to Mandu and raised it to its greatest splendor. His son and third and last ruler of Ghuri dynasty, Mohammed, ruled for just one year till his poisoning by the militaristic Mohammed Khalji. Mandu under the Mughals and Baz Bahadur Khan- In the year AH 941/ 1534 AD Humayun attacked on one of his major rivals Bahadur Shah of Gujarat who had annexed the province to refuge in Mandu and Bahadur Shah who was also aided by Portuguese was defeated by Humayun. Humayun relaxed at Mandu for a while before leaving. Humayun lost the kingdom to the Mallu Khan who was an office of the Khalji Dynasty. Ten years in the continuation of the feuds and invasion followed resulting in the end of Baz Bahadur Khan emerging on the top spot and ruled the area from AD 1555-1562. Hemu Vikramaditya the Commander-in-Chief and Prime Minister of Suri Army under the reign of Adil Shah Suri was sent to quell the rebellions and Hemu attacked on Mandu which led the fleeing of Baz Bahadur Khan from Mandu. Hemu appointed his governor and moved on to conquer other parts and in the meanwhile Baz Bahadur again came back to Mandu.

In 1561 AD Akbar’s army led by Adham Khan and Pir Muhammad Khan attacked Malwa and defeated Baz Bahadur in the battle of Sarangpur on 29 March 1561. One of the reasons for Adham Khan’s attack seems to be his love for Rani Roopmati. Rani Roopmati poisoned herself to death on hearing the news of fall of Mandu. Baz Bahadur fled to Khandesh. Akbar soon recalled Adham Khan and made over command to Pir Muhammad. Pir Muhammad attacked Khandesh and proceeded up to Burhanpur but he was defeated by a coalition of three powers: Miran Mubarak Shah II of Khandesh, Tufal Khan of Berar and Baz Bahadur of Malwa. Pir Muhammad died while retreating. The confederate army pursued the Mughals and drove them out of Malwa. Baz Bahadur regained his kingdom for a short period. Finally in the year 1562 AD, Akbar sent another troop of army led by Abdullah Khan, the Uzbeg wo finally defeated Baz Bahadur Khan. This time he fled to Chittor in Rajputana. Baz Bahadur remained a fugitive at a number of courts till he surrendered in November, 1570 to Akbar at Nagaur and then he joined Akbar’s service. Jahangir visited Mandu in the 11th year of his reign and it is said with some sources that the Jal Mahal in Mandu was built by Jahangir but some reference shows that it was built by Khaljis in 1534 AD and Jahangir only stayed here for six months

Zeno has two examples of early strike mohurs but none of them matches to the style of this specimen which may conclude that these are of even early strike than off those listed in Zeno. Another important feature is that this specimen is of similar type of those rupees struck in the very early reign of Shah Jahan where he would have adopted the features from those of rupees. Mohurs of Early Style are not cataloged in KM and probably struck with the designs adopted from those of Jahangir’s as this device clearly shows the beautiful engraving and floral designs overall on the coin. Probably struck at Surat mint because head of persian “wau and ta” is visible on the coin.

Murad Bakhsh was the fourth and youngest son of Shah Jahan. He was born in 1624 A.D. and when Shah Jahan died, he was the governor of Gujarat. On the death of Shah Jahan, he plundered Surat and proclaimed himself emperor, striking coins in his own name. He was persuaded by Aurangzeb to join forces and partition the empire, but Aurangzeb eventually made him prisoner and he was beheaded in 1661 A.D.

Under Jahangir Ajmer became a mint for gold and silver also and from it issued the well known gold coins portraying Jahangir seated with a wine cup in his hand. Shahjahan must have coined very little money at Ajmer, for only a single rupee is known but the mint was revived by Aurangzeb in or about the 30th year of his reign and was working regularly up to its close. The issues were almost same of the rupee, gold coins from this mint are very rare. The obverse contains the usual couplet ‘mihr munir’, on the reverse Ajmer is Called ‘Darul-khair’-the abode of well being. 127. The Reverse has been deciphered now in the article of Gopal and Siddanagowdar in SINS VOLUME XIX printed in 2009 and may be considered as an important coin. It has a ship with the spread sails on it at reverse and well known mythical bird of this region “Gandaberunda” on obverse. It is a well known fact that the Keladi Nayakas had flourishing maritime trade with many other countries. They were also known as the masters of the coastal areas of Karnataka adjoining their Kingdom. Hence the ship with the sails depicted on the reverse of this coin justifies all such coins from Keladi Dynasty. The name of the ship of the Keladi Chief was “Iswari Mahamayi”.

It is an example of the pattern rupee produced at the Soho mint in Birmingham. This one is struck in copper, but proof specimen in silver also exists. The coin is exactly the size as the Imperial rupee. The Agent at Indore disagreed with it as these coins with same diameter could mix-up with the Imperial rupees. Thenit was decided by him that they should be of slightly smaller size. Therefore the successive issue VS 1956 is smaller and the portrait is pointing into the circular legend, because the used the same portrait punches for preparing the dies.

In 1756 AD, the Nawab of Bengal attacked and captured Calcutta, whereupon the British sent an army and fleet to recapture the town, which they did in January 1757. Following this they obliged the Nawab to grant them the right to establish a mint and they began to strike coins, at first showing the mint name Alinagar Calcutta, Alinagar being the name given to the town by the Nawab.

However, later in the year, following the battle of Plassey the new Nawab allowed the East India Company on the July 28th, 1757 AD and permission was given to struck the coins with the mint name Calcutta. Coins with this mint name were struck in the Regional Years 4, 5 and 6 in the name of Alamgir II.

The Auction is conducted under these Terms and Conditions of Auction and it is applicable to the Indian Law. Auctioneer reserves the right to include its own item(s) in this auction sale as well as material from affiliated or related to companies, principals, officers or employees. Auctioneer also reserves the rights: 1. To reject/cancel any bid at any time on any lot. 2. To withdraw any item from the auction. 3. To place the bids on behalf of the consigner up to the amount of reserves price established by the consigner. Auctioneer will not accept a reserve price from a consigner above the high estimate shown in the catalogs for auction. Bidders 1. Any person participating or registering for the Floor and Online Auction to buy any item offered in this sale agrees & accepts these Terms and Conditions of the Auction. And hereafter that person is referred as “Bidder”. 2. If any unit/entity places a bid, then the individual executing the bid on behalf of the unit/ entity agrees to personally guarantee payment for any successful bid. Bidding 1. The Auction is conducted in Indian Rupees Currency. 2. Auctioneer will not be responsible for any errors in bidding (typographical error), so make sure that every bid is entered correctly. Auctioneer will also not be responsible for Internet bids submitted after the published closing time; nor for any Internet delay from the bidder’s end. 3.Auctioneer shall make maximum efforts to properly enter and execute bid received by email, fax or by other means. All photographs in this catalog are of the actual items offered for sale in this auction but may not be the actual size or to scale. If the bidder feels that the description or condition is not satisfactory to him while viewing an item, he may either avail a high resolution image which will be sent on request, if this not satisfy the bidder, the item may viewed physically. But all these measures are to taken before bidding. No complaints shall be entertained after bidding. 2. Lots are sold as shown with all faults, imperfections and or errors of description. The auctioneer is not responsible for the safe custody of any lots left beyond seven (7) working days after the date of sale, and reserves the right to charge storage and re-sell by auction or privately, and without notice to the buyer. 4. If any Auction invoice submitted by Auctioneer is not paid in full when due, the unpaid balance will bear interest at the highest rate permitted by law

from the date of invoice until paid. Any invoice not paid when due will bear a Two & a Half percent (2½ %) interest per month. If the Auctioneer refers any invoice to an attorney for collection, the buyer agrees to pay attorney’s fees, court costs, and other collection costs incurred by Auctioneer. 5. After the auction, if during the transit or due to any other reason if auction lot/lots are lost than auctioneer is not liable to give the delivery if the said lot/lots. 6.Those bidders who have not paid their previous bills and also the bidders who are not known to auctioneer, in such circumstances auctioneer has right to take the deposits from such bidders, and if they do not give deposits, auctioneer has right to prevent such bidder to take part in the auction. 7. The auctioneer has a right to ask for photo identification (ID) proof from the bidder, issued by government or semi government authorities 8. Payment is delinquent and in default if not received in full, in good funds, within seven (7) calendar days of the Auction Sale (the “Default Date”), without exception, time being of the essence.
