2014 Scholarship Program The 2014 NYPL Scholarship Program is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint, who has been accepted at any two or four-year college or university, vocational or technical education institution. Applicants will be judged j udged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball has had on their lives. The Scholarship Program will consist of two stages – a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly with their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional round. The 14 nalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPL’s three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler). The scholarship’s top prize includes three winners of a $2,500 scholarship and eleven winners of $250 each for books. “The New York ork-Penn -Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors from within our league’s footprint who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the positive benets their local NYPL club has had on their life,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “The Foundation is pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our 14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach efforts.” Students must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and participate in extracirricular activities. Applicant should also be involved with community service and be able to provide references. A copy of a high school transcript and letter of acceptance to institution must be included in application.
In 2013, the three $2,500 scholarships were awarded to students from the Aberdeen IronBirds, Batavia Muckdogs and Tri-City Valley Cats. For more information and to Apply visit

BRINGING CHEERS FOR 75 YEARS This league was founded in 1939 with the t he name “Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League.” League.” This was generally shortened to “PONY League”. The original teams included the Batavia Clippers, Bradford Bees, Hamilton Red Wings, Jamestown Jaguars, Niagara Falls Rainbows and the Olean Oilers. The Oilers, a Brooklyn Dodgers afliate, won both the regular-season and playoff
championships. The Hamilton Red Wings folded early in the 1956 season, and with no more teams in Ontario,
the league adopted its current name in 1957. The league crossed back into Canada with the formation of the St. Catharines Blue Jays in 1986. They were joined by the Hamilton Redbirds
in 1987 and the Welland Pirates Pirates in 1989, but all three clubs had moved back stateside by 2000.
