The PPC (Powered Positioning deviceand Caliper) is an EFTB tool and has been developed as a multi purpose four-arm caliper. Independent movable caliper arms provide an accurate hole-volume computation even with tool eccentering.

Depending on the requested job type, the PPC works as an active positioning device (such as; adjustable force centralizer, short-axis positioning device, eccentralizer, or active standoff). The PPC not only works as a caliper, but it also works to improve the data quality of sonic tools, density tools and others.
1
With the PPC log-down kit attached, the PPC is able to provide an open caliper and keep the tool either centered, or on a short axis when going down to Total Depth (TD).

One of the features of the PPC is its adjustable “arm pressure” function. You can change the arm pressure by sending power from Surface. If you want to centralize the toolstring in a highly deviated hole, you can apply high-arm pressure to centralize the toolstring. A maximum of four PPCs can be combined in the same toolstring. This function was developed because some PPCs may be used as centralizers and some PPCs may be used as short-axis positioning tools simultaneously in the same toolstring.

The other feature of the PPC is its selectable set up. You can change each caliper set up as either powered or non-powered.
that data, you can adjust the required centering force (caliper pressure.) Required centering force depends on the hole deviation and the weight of the toolstring.
•
If all four calipers are set up as powered, the PPC can be used as a centralizer (centering set up).
•
If two of the four arms are powered, the PPC is aligned in the long-axis, and can be used for the short-axis logging for tools in combination (short-axis logging set up).
The PPC works as a short axis positioning device when only two of the caliper arms, which are perpendicular to the density caliper, receive caliper pressure (short axis logging set up.) Since this pair of powered PPC calipers is naturally oriented to the long axis in the oval hole, the density caliper orients to the short axis as a result.
•
If one of the four calipers is powered, the PPC can be used as an eccentralizer (eccentering set up).
These set ups are only changeable at the surface before the run in-hole. Since the PPC has the EMS cartridge (EMC) function for caliper measurement, it is possible to connect the EMS sonde (EMM-6 arm caliper sonde) directly below the PPC without using the EMS cartridge (EMC). If you use a 45° adapter head (AH-255) and dual PPC combination (PPC-AH45°-PPC) to produce an 8-arm caliper, the data combination of two PPC s can only be done on Well CAD 3D.
The PPC is a four-arm caliper tool whose calipers are able to move independently and provide borehole radius. By processing caliper measurements, the PPC produces oval hole graphics, Well CAD 3D interface files. An important role of the PPC is to i mprove data quality of the tools in combination, such as a sonic or density tool, by providing proper positioning of the toolstring. The PPC works as an adjustable force centralizer to centralize the toolstring in a vertical or deviated well. You need at least two PPCs to properly centralize the toolstring, and all of the caliper arm settings must be in the powered position (centering set up.) The recommendation is to put the PPC above and below the tool to be centralized. The PPC provides four-arm caliper measurements and by monitoring
The PPC works as an eccentralizer when only one arm is powered (eccentering set up.) Since this set up allows supplying arm pressure only to one of the arms, this single arm pushes the toolstring against the borehole. You can select which caliper to power. When the PPC log-down kit is attached, you can open the caliper while the tool is going downhole. By doing this, you can centralize or orient the toolstring to the short axis during log down (e.g., sonic log down.) The PPC can also be used as an active stand off. Active standoff means that by opening and applying caliper pressure, the PPC works as a standoff and then the caliper can be closed when it is not needed.
When you run the CMR tool inhole, the strong magnet may stick to the casing and make it difficult to lower the tool. In that case, the PPC, which is connected below the sonde with log-down kit attached, works as an active standoff. Multiple PPC operation means you can combine a maximum of four PPCs in one toolstring. In case of OP/MAXIS, under the LES window, PPC displays the .

The number of PPCs is important since caliper operation command, presentation format, signals, and data channel names are distinguished by that number. For the normal logging, always select “PPC1-B” for single PPC use and select in order PPC1,2,3… for multiple PPC operation. When you declare the toolstring, select “PPC1” as the top PPC in the toolstring.
This section contains basic equipment specifications (weight, dimensions, temperature/pressure ratings, holesize range) with a description of the major assets or components of PPC. This section also contains basic details on service combinability.
In case of MaxWell, the system automatically indexes the number for each PPC on the tool string. The user does not have to take care of the index numbers. The PPC electronics includes the function of the EMS cartridge (EMC); therefore, the EMS sonde (EMM) can be connected directly below the PPC without the need for an EMC. This PPC-EMS combination provides 6-arm caliper data from EMM.
The PPC telemetry is EDTS and combinable with EFTB and FTB tools. Refer to 2.1.2 for detailed information.
The PPC uses AC-AUX for the caliper operation (open/close/powered) so special care is needed to combine the PPC with Highly Integrated Azimuthal Laterolog sonde (HALS). •
AC-AUX causes noise for the HALS measurement.
•
PPC arm control is not allowed during HALS logging.
Although the PPC does not have a direct predecessor, the EDAC and the EMS are both multi-arm calipers. The EDAC is used for the density short-axis logging with density tool.

If you connect the PPC-B30 with a 3 3/8-in standard tool which is rated below 30,000 psi, change the threaded ring from 100554574 to H339565 on the upper housing of PPC-B30. Otherwise, you risk breaking the lower housing of 3 3/8-in tool even if the pressure is less than 20,000 psi. Meanwhile, the lower interface of the PPC-B30 fit in 3 3/8-in, 31-pin standard.
The gross centering force for one arm (RB = 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°) is 140 kgf, and for two arms (RB = 45°, 135°, 215°, 315°) it is 198 kgf. This is calculated as below; One arm: o ne − a rm

The PPC does not have DTB through-wires; do not connect DTB tools below the PPC. Since the PPC is an EDTS telemetry tool and not a bottom-only tool, the PPC can be put any place within the FTB and EFTB toolstring. For short-axis logging, put the PPC above the density tool so that the pair of powered arms can lead along the long-axis of the oval hole zone. That way, the PPC is positioned at the center of the hole but since the density tool is usually eccentered during logging, it is highly recommended that you put two knuckle joints (e.g., AH-107) with the PPC for the density tool combination. Typical tool combinations are: •
Sonic centering: LEH-QT - DTC-H - PPC - DSI - PPC
•
Short-axis logging with standard arm: LEH-QT - DTC-H - AH107 - PPC - AH107 (HGNS-HRCC-HRMS-AIT)

Do not use the above combination with the log down kit. With this string the PPC can tilt slightly so the long contact pad of the log down kit may damage the formation by mechanical movement of the log down kit. •

For use with two PPC connections with a 45° rotation axially to allow an 8-arm caliper measurement. This adapter is adjustable either plus or minus 45°. To align the key positions of the tools above and below the PPCs in-line, use two AH-255. The ratings of the AH-255 are 20 Kpsi and 275 degC.
Protects the end of the closed extension arms while running inhole.
When using the PPC as an eccentralizer. The PPC radius to the contact face with eccentralizer setup is 2.3 ft (max OD is 5.25 in). Therefore, it makes an offset of 0.6 in between contact faces of a 3 3/8-in tool andthe PPC. There is a 0.7-in eccentered adapter to prevent the effect of the offset for the eccentering tool facing contact to borehole. This adapter is also adjustable to rotate the PPC 45° axially, if desired. The rotate function of the PPC can be used like an existing short-axis device to position the eccentering tool in-line with the short axis. This adapter is used for the PPC upper head.

For locations frequently using the powered mode of PPC. This special TIP lasts at least two times longer than the standard tip.
The same purpose as AH-256 but this adapter is for the PPC lower head.
The following lists the required parts and tools.
Protects the end of the closed extension arms while running inhole. This is designed to use the PPC as an eccentralizer, thus the thickness of the borehole wall contact side is minimum against the Protector Extension Arm (100059826).
•
EMM Interface adapter (100330936)
•
Screw (attached to EMM interface)
•
Screw driver, middle size
Clean up the EMM interface connector. electrical cleaner, if necessary.
Use
Clean up the lower head of the PPC and the upper head of EMM. Put the EMM interface connector to the upper head of EMM (see Figure 3-12). Fix this adapter to the upper head with a screw (B015029).
Allows for an extension arm up to 30-in caliper measurement.

To fix the screw onto the EMM upper head, you must do the rework of tapping a screwhole on the upper head block locally. The size and dimension of the screw hole is shown in Figure 3-11.
PPC coverage of the borehole diameter can be increased by adding the extension arm. Figure 3-13 shows the setup.
PPC
Connect the EMM below the PPC. The PPC-EMM is ready to power up.
PPC can be use as an active eccentralizer. Figure 3-14 shows the setup.
This section contains details of all auxiliary hardware components required at the base in order to provide specific services.
