The new features in the engine/gearbox assembly are:
NEW FEATURES IN DIESEL ENGINES
7-GEAR DSG 0GC AUTOMATIC GEARBOX
In the diesel engines, the components with new features are: // G505 differential pressure sensor. All diesel engines have a single pressure sensor in the exhaust. // Turbo cooling is optimised in the diesel engine with the identifying letters “DFHA”. // The exhaust gas temperature sensor 1, G235, is now of the SENT type in the diesel engine with identifying letters “DFHA”.
As a new development, the engines with “CFFA” and “CFHA” identifying letters are combined with a new 7-gear DSG automatic gearbox and the identifying letters “0GC”. For further information see page 18.
SCR SYSTEM The second-generation SCR system is introduced in diesel engines with identifying letters “DFFA” and “DFHA” for 4Drive in fulfilment of the EU6 emission standards. For further information see page 20.
16
G505 DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SENSOR
G505 differential pressure sensor
In all diesel engines, the particulate filter has a single pressure sensor. The G450 exhaust gas pressure sensor 1 disappears, as an optimisation measure. Only the G505 differential pressure sensor is used, and it is now of the SENT type. This sensor measures the differential pressure between the particulate filter input and output. Furthermore, this type of signal can send the differential pressure value, check its plausibility and diagnose possible faults.
D163-16
TURBOCHARGER COOLING
Cooling by coolant
The high heat load of the 2.0 L TDI 140 kW engine with identifying letters “DFHA” has led to the oil-based cooling of the turbocharger being reinforced with additional coolant-based cooling. For this purpose, the turbocharger has been inserted into the heating micro circuit. Moreover, to prevent the oil from crystallising after the engine stops, coolant is run through the turbocharger using the V488 backup pump for heating.
Oil cooling
D163-17 Analysis electronics
G235 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR 1
G235 exhaust gas temperature sensor 1
In the engine with identifying letters “DFHA”, the sensor is now a thermoelement, instead of an NTC sensor. This delivers greater efficiency in areas where temperatures can surpass 800˚C. The thermoelement is comprised of two contact materials (nickel and chrome) and analysis electronics separate from the measuring point. Voltage is generated between the two materials when there is a temperature difference between them. The analysis electronics analyse this tension and transform it into a SENT signal.

ENGINE/GEARBOX ASSEMBLY DSG 0GC AUTOMATIC GEARBOX
1
The new 7-gear DSG “0GC” automatic gearbox combines the comfort of an automatic gearbox with the resilience of a manual one. The DSG 0GC automatic gearbox is available in the front-wheel drive version and for 4Drive. The DSG 0GC automatic gearbox is comprised of: // Dual clutch. // Mechanical components. // The mechatronic unit. The dual clutch is of the oil-bath multi-plate type and drives the mechanical pump for the gearbox oil. The mechanical components of the DSG 0GC automatic gearbox feature: // 2 input shafts. // 2 output shafts. // 1 parking lock. // 1 differential. This gearbox is characterised by not having an inverter shaft for reversing. When reverse is engaged, the power flow passes from input shaft 2 to output shaft 1 through the second gear free-wheel on output shaft 2, which acts as a reverse gear wheel. The Mechatronic unit controls the DSG automatic gearbox and has electronic and hydraulic components. The Mechatronic unit shares oil with the gearbox internal components. In the 4Drive version, the transfer box is connected to the differential cage. The automatic gearbox has two oil pumps: one is mechanically actuated and the other is electrically actuated. The electric pump works to generate oil pressure when the start-stop function is in operation.

In order to reduce NOx emissions in exhaust gases, the ATECA with diesel engines and 4Drive requires the use of the second-generation SCR system. The system injects Adblue between the catalytic converter and the particulate filter in order to reduce the NOx in the exhaust gases and transform it into N2 and H2O.
Boca de llenado de Adblue
ADBLUE SUPPLY SYSTEM The Adblue filler neck is located next to the fuel filler neck. The Adblue tank is located behind the fuel tank, and has a capacity of 11 L. The tank contains the “GX19 reducing agent dosing system delivery unit”. The “J891 reducing agent heating control unit” is located next to the Adblue tank.
SPECIFIC ENGINE COMPONENTS // // // //
J623 engine control unit. J583 NOx sensor control unit. N474 reducing agent injector. Oxidising and reducing catalytic agent (NOx accumulator).
ADBLUE INJECTION MANAGEMENT The J623 engine control unit assumes the following functions of the SCR system: // Adblue dosing. // Heating. // Monitoring the degree of efficiency. // Dash panel indicators management. These functions are described in detail below. Note: For further information about engine component operation, refer to course handbook no. 162 EA288 family engines, page 51.

DOSING OF ADBLUE (REDUCING AGENT) The dosing of the Adblue is executed by means of the GX19 reducing agent dosing system supply unit. The unit is welded to the Adblue tank. This unit has three functions:
ultrasound principle. The temperature of the reducing agent is also taken into account when monitoring its level, as volume can vary depending on temperature. // Pumping and recovery of Adblue The flow of Adblue from the tank towards the injector is performed by the two pumps included inside the supply module casing.
// Adblue temperature measurement It is controlled by the G685 reducing agent temperature sensor. This sensor is of the NTC type. The signal activates the heating of the tank and of the pipes of the SCR system.
Note: In order for the engine control unit to be able to reliably detect refilling, at least 4 L must be put in.
// Adblue level measurement This is controlled by the G697 reducing agent level sensor. This sensor operates by means of the

SUPPLY MODULE
The engine control unit excites the return pump for about 5 seconds. During this time, the injector remains closed in order to avoid the intake of hot exhaust gases from the engine through the supply pipe. The injector then opens to offset the vacuum in the supply pipe during the intake process. Both reducing agent pumps are supplied by the J963 reducing agent dosing system relay and the J623 engine control unit earth. The amount of reducing agent injected is established by the engine control unit, based on the time and the frequency of opening of the injector’s solenoid valve, and by means of a PWM signal. The injection pressure is approximately 6.5 bar.
The supply module is bolted below the GX19 reducing agent dosing system supply unit, and may be replaced if necessary. This model has two integrated pumps: // V437 reducing agent pump The pump sucks Adblue from the tank and pumps it towards the injector through the pipe. // V561 reducing agent return pump The return pump sucks the Adblue from the supply pipe just after the engine stops. This prevents the Adblue from freezing and damaging the injector and the pipes at low temperatures.

HEATING The system’s heating makes sure that the flow of Adblue reaches all the engine’s areas of operation, even when it is initially frozen.
On this basis, the J891 reducing agent heating control unit activates the Z102 reducing agent tank heating and Z104 reducing agent pipe heating. The engine control unit also excites the reducing agent pump coils cyclically to increase the temperature of the Adblue.
// Heating operation The J623 engine control unit determines heating needs based on the information supplied by the G17 outside temperature sensor and the G685 reducing agent temperature sensor.

MONITORING THE DEGREE OF EFFICIENCY The engine control unit checks the degree of efficiency and quality of the Adblue at regular intervals during the engine’s deceleration stages. In the engine deceleration stage, reducing agent is injected by means of the N474 reducing agent injector. At the same time, the J883 exhaust flap control unit is activated to rechannel the greatest possible amount of exhaust gases at low pressure towards the combustion chamber inlet.
During the test, the engine control unit analyses NOx content by means of the G295 NOx sensor and compares it to a calculated theoretical value. If the deviation is excessive, the dash panel displays an SCR system failure warning relating to an excessively low degree of efficiency or poor Adblue quality.

Fault warning indicator
D163-26
DASH PANEL INDICATORS MANAGEMENT There are three types of system indicators on the dash panel screen: // Operating range warning indicator. // Filling level warning indicator. // Fault warning indicator.
Filling level warning sequence: // As of 2400 km: the white warning lamp is activated. The warning is repeated every 400 km or 8 hours. // As of 1,000 km: the yellow warning lamp is activated every 100 km or 4 hours. // As of 200 km: the yellow warning lamp is activated every 20 km. // At 0 km: the red warning lamp is activated, together with the “Start disabled” warning. In all cases, the visual warning from the dash panel is combined with an audible warning to attract the driver’s attention.
OPERATING RANGE WARNING INDICATOR The remaining operating range warnings cover information about the minimum and maximum amounts for refilling. The minimum amount is used to change the indication after refilling. The maximum amount is useful for choosing a suitable refilling container.
FAULT WARNING INDICATOR
FILLING LEVEL WARNING INDICATOR
The fault warning appears on the dash panel 50 km after the fault is generated, with the following sequence: // The yellow fault warning lamp is activated and the driver has 1000 km to take the vehicle to a specialised workshop. // After 1,000 km, the fault warning lamp turns red and the engine can no longer be started up.
Warnings for insufficient filling level of the Adblue tank warn the driver of the need to refill it. If these warnings are not heeded, start-up will be blocked when the remaining operating range runs out. In this case, once the ignition has been switched off, it will not be possible to restart the engine.

V282 AND V283 PARKING BRAKE MOTORS // The rotational movement from the worm-screw spindle is transferred to the second spur gear. // The rotational movement of the second spur gear and the internal spindle mechanism is transformed into a linear thrust movement of the brake piston.
The electromechanical brake is integrated in the rear wheel brake callipers. The electromechanical brake has a new design. The electric motor moves the compressor nut by means of a geared reduction, acting on the brake piston and in turn pressing on the brake pads. The rotational movement of the electric motor is transformed into a linear movement through different stages: // The rotational movement from the spindle of the electric motor is transferred to the first spur gear.
34
PARKING BRAKE ACTIVATION
The electric motor is excited to close the parking brake. The electric motor drives the spindle via a geared reduction and moves the compressor nut located on the spindle thread forward. The compressor nut comes into contact with the inner front surface of the brake piston and presses the it against the brake pads. The brake pads press against the brake disc. The pressure causes an increase in the current absorbed by the electric motor. In the course of this process, the electromechanical parking brake’s control unit measures the current absorbed by the electric motor. When the absorbed current surpasses an established value, the control unit cuts the power supply to the electric motor.

Ports for charging refrigerant
D163-49 The air conditioning circuit components are the same as for R134a, but have been redesigned internally to adapt to the more abrasive chemical characteristics of the new refrigerant. The previous refrigerant R134a should not be added to the new circuit. For safety reasons, the charging ports have been redesigned so that they will not be compatible with the previous R134a recharging system. An identification label has been fixed to the engine compartment to identify the new refrigerant.
The main new feature in the air-conditioning is the introduction of the new refrigerant R-1234yf in the air conditioning circuit. This means a new device for recharging the refrigerant, VAS581001 or VAS581003, and the use of a specific oil. Refrigerant R-134a has been replaced by the new refrigerant R-1234yf. It is “Tetrafluoropropene”, and its thermal characteristics are very similar to those of R-134a. This new feature has been introduced due to the 2006/40/EC directive, which orders that as of January 2017, vehicles must use refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) of no greater than 150. R-134a surpasses this limit, whereas R-1234yf has a GWP of 4.
Note: For further information about using the new refrigerant, see ElsaPro.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS There are two types of air conditioning systems: // Manual electronic air conditioning. // Climatronic. The air conditioning system has the following optionals: // Seat heating with three levels of intensity. The level chosen is displayed through 3 LEDs. // Independent heating through PTC for vehicles with diesel engines. // Heated windscreen (optional only for Climatronic). // Stationary heating, which heats the interior even when the engine is switched off. (Optional only for Climatronic.)
The air conditioning control units are connected to the Comfort CAN-bus in the same way as in the SEAT Leon. As a new feature, the pure air system is added (standard in Climatronic), as well as stationary heating. The Controls for both systems, and the particularities of the new Pure air and Stationary heating systems will be described below.

PURE AIR SYSTEM ACTIVATION
PURE AIR, RECIRCULATION FLAP CONTROL
The ‘Pure air’ system, through the air-conditioning controls, can be used to optimise air filtering in the interior even further. In the air-conditioning control options that appear on the infotainment system display, press “Setup” on the controls to bring up a specific “Pure air” symbol as shown in the image. Pressing the symbol will activate partial closure of the recirculation flap in order to run all the air inside the vehicle through the filter. This limits the entry of exterior air and intensifies interior air filtering. The automatic air purification sequence may vary depending on the type of infotainment system available. In all cases, the message that appears on the display while the system is active is “Cleaning the air”. The system is deactivated if a window or door is opened.
During the ‘Pure air’ system activation process, the J255 Climatronic control unit controls the percentage of closure of the recirculation flap on the basis of three main signals: // Interior air humidity. // Vehicle speed. // Outside temperature. Automatic control optimises interior air filtration, without foregoing driving safety and comfort features.

TYPES OF BURNER The stationary heating burners are made by Webasto and deliver a maximum power of up to 5,000 W. There are two types, depending on the fuel used: // Thermo Top V. (Petrol) // Thermo Top Vlies. (Diesel)
G189 (PTC) overheating sensor
// Thermo Top V The heating receives fuel through the fuel inlet. The fuel inlet reaches the Venturi nozzle. The air required for combustion is taken in through the V6 combustion air blower. Part of the intake air is channelled directly to the Venturi nozzle. The air drags the fuel with it, which is sprayed. The mixture is then transferred to the combustion chamber, where the Q8 glow plug with flame control ignites the mixture. The second part of the intake air is led directly to the combustion chamber to help in the combustion of the mixture. The coolant enters the dual-wall heat exchanger through the coolant inlet sleeve. The coolant absorbs the heat generated by the combustion of the mixture through the inner wall of the heat exchanger. The heated coolant accesses the coolant circuit through the coolant outlet sleeve.

THERMO TOP Vlies
// Thermo Top Vlies This type of heating for diesel combustion is an evolution of the above-mentioned Thermal Top V. The main differences are found in the combustion chamber: // New metal felt where the fuel is absorbed and then evaporates. // New air inlet designed to optimise the mixture.

J364 AUXILIARY HEATER CONTROL UNIT
// Post-operation phase In this phase, the V55 circulation pump continues to operate and the V54 metering pump is disconnected. The post-operation phase is divided into two stages: // Burning residue. The V6 combustion air blower stops operating and the glow plug is excited. // Cooling. In this stage, the V6 combustion air turbine starts up again. The reference value for the Q8 glow plug with flame control resistance is recalculated by the control unit at regular intervals during the start-up and post-operation phases, in order to monitor the effects of its ageing.
The J364 auxiliary heater control unit manages the system’s operating phases: // Start-up phase In the start-up phase, the Q8 glow plug with flame control is excited to initiate the combustion of the air and fuel mixture. Once the combustion process stabilises, the glow plug is disconnected. // Heating phase In the heating phase, combustion management continues in order to keep the coolant temperature between 84°C and 88˚C. The system is deactivated if the temperature reaches 110˚C.

REMOTE CONTROL WARNING LAMP
Depending on the activation sequence of the remote control warning lamp, the system may be diagnosed according to the table on the following page.
When the stationary heating is activated and deactivated, the flashing warning lamp (LED) indicates the following information: // Stationary heating activation or deactivation status. // Battery charge level. // Radio frequency connection status. In order to recognise and distinguish between information, the warning lamp lights up with different colours, times and frequency (flashing codes).
CHANGING THE BATTERY If the radio frequency remote control warning lamp displays a ‘low’ or ‘empty’ battery charge, the battery should be changed.
