Four Differences Between Inspection And Supervision
Inspection focuses on the monitoring and evaluation of performance. It is a critical examination and evaluation of a school as a place of learning. Through inspection, necessary and relevant advice may be given for the improvement of the school. Such advice is usually registered in a report. On the other hand, supervision focuses on monitoring and improving performance. It is a constant and continuous process of personal guidance based on frequent visit to a school to give concrete and constructive advice and encouragement to teachers so as to improve the learning and teaching situation in the school.
Inspection was usually conducted by one person who claimed to be expet in all school programmes and sevices, while supervision was done by team of experts, which means there was division of labour and experts advice was given to the teachers and students.
Inspection as in school administration has a negative connotation in the sense that it is more likely to be a check in-efficiency and fault finding attitude. It is teacher oriented while supervision is more positive and constructive as it deals with improving the educational system by providing leadership, motivation and leadership to the school teachers with a view to improving their teaching methodology. It is a democratic model.
Inspectors demand respect from teachers, students and school heads. There were in the habit of intimidating the teacher, students and school heads, while supervisors earned respect from students, teachers and school heads through the process of sharing their expertise knowledge and experiences with them.
