Handloom sector plays a very important role in the country’s economy and is the largest cottage industry in the country. Along with the artistry of weavers, the Indian handloom industry demonstrates the richness and diversity of Indian culture. Handloom industry in India is best known for its distinctiveness, style, and traditionalism. Fashion as a cycle never completes and always stands for creativity and talent. Being one of the necessities of life, it depicts one’s personality and status. The competition factor has added a lot to this industry and helps one to be a path breaker plus set his/her own fashion trends. But there is an acute shortage of highly trained professional with skill sets required by the apparel industry at present.
WHY SUBARNAPUR? Bomkai Sari is produced by the “Bhulia” community of Subarnapur district of Odisha, India. In particular, the famous sari designs, Bomkai are the traditional designs that was produced in the village named Bomkai of Ganjam district of Orissa. The main occupation of “Bhulia” community was weavings. Weavers by own used to sell woven sari at nearby locally market and whatever they got remuneration by selling the sari, they used to brought yarn for further weaving. During mid-Seventies G.O.O. initiated a corporation called Orissa Handloom Development Corporation which grew and decayed in two decades and has been liquidated. A gradual reduce in the Government subsidies lead to reduction in the number of active co-operative societies.
OBJECTIVES:
The institute will deal with the study of fibers, fabric structure and cloth analysis, weaving theory and fabric calculations, textile chemistry with dyeing and printing, computer aided textile designing, computer color matching, textile testing and quality control, marketing management etc. Educating individuals to be creative and responsible designers who will be competent to handle diverse areas of need/ situations in today’s, highly competitive and diverse Apparel Design Industry.
To make the participating students to learn latest technology & new fashion and implement it in their designs to produce a combination of handloom art and modern technology in the apparel industry. To train the students for self-employment and build their capacity to meet the challenges of the market and global competition to develop entrepreneurial skills.
