TOYOTA 1) Defne Total Total Quality Management (TQM). Provide a brie bacground o t!e emergence o TQM. Total quality management is based on the principle that every staff has to be committed to ensure high quality output in every aspect of company’s operation. It’s built on the belief that quality is a matter of conforming to customer’s requirement.
Total quality management started off as operative work to accept or reject a finished product. It then evolved into a dedicated department to inspect and ensure quality of output. The industrial revolution made a significant boost to quality management as firms produce in bigger scale and the introduction of assembly line, this required them to pay more attention in order to retain quality of their products . With the help of the experts such as Edward Deming and Malcolm Badridge , TQM were further enhanced and popularized. Countries such as Japan were rebuilding their economy also decided to adopt quality management. This led to Toyota to implement quality control into their production. By 1970s, quality management was common in Japanese companies. Noticing the success of the Japanese, the west started to follow up.

Toyota has been practicing the three components of total quality management (TQM) namely customer satisfaction, employee involvement and continuous improvement. Employee involvement Toyota has been striving to involve its employees into its managerial decision, in 1951, Toyota launched the creative idea suggestion system to encourage its employees to make contributions for organization’s development. Besides that, Toyota has established the Toyota Way, a set of business principle that allows employees to suggest changes for fo r development. Continuous improvement Toyota also focused on continuous improvement, The Toyota way focuses on encouraging innovation, consensus and ideas for improvement.
Customer satisfaction ‘Customer First’ and ‘Respect for People’ is one of the main motto for Toyota, showing their effort to maintain customer satisfaction. They also gave away back to the communities by performing community-based project as part of their corporate social responsibility.
