VERTICAL CYLINDRICAL STORAGE TANK CALIBRATION AS PER API MPMS Ch.2 SEC 2D 1.1 MEASUREMENT AND CALIBRATION INSTRUMENTS OF VERTICAL STORAGE TANKS
EODR(ELECTRO-OPTICAL DISTANCE RANGING METHOD) uses following instruments to execute the tank calibration jobs-

1.2.
FIELD MEASUREMENT (INTERNAL)
1.2.1
Shell calibration
Ensure the tank wall is clean and free from slag, grease, dirt or oil patches and tank environment to be free from welding fumes, as it may cause errors in measurement. This method is only suitable for tanks where the internal diameter does not vary by more than 1%. Firstly, positioning of instrument Total Station is done at a point near to the centre of the tank & it is to be ensured that there is minimum obstruction during the course of calibration. After positioning, leveling of instrument is done with respect to the axis of tank surface. Then target point is selected over the tank bottom shell & circumference of tank is measured with respect to the same. Consequently, programming of total station is configured for measuring the remaining circumference of each shell. The data collected by the Total station will be recorded in the PCMCIA card which is inserted into the total station. This data will then be processed to give output information such as the radius, roundness and the tilt of the respective tank.

1.2.2
TANK BOTTOM MEASUREMENT
The tank bottom measurement can be carried out by Total Station as well as Rotating Laser. Measurement by Total Station – With respect to the circumference of the tank, the tank bottom is divided into radial stations at equi-distance. Official Datum plate elevation and instrument (ATG) datum elevation is taken before and after the tank bottom survey. These two elevations should agree to a tolerance of not more than 2 mm as per the specification (API Chapter 2, Section 2D) provided by manufacturer. After positions of radial stations have been marked, Total Station is configured to measuring mode & for each station, readings are taken by the instrument. These readings are later used to generate the profile of the tank bottom surface & consequently, volume is computed for the same. Measurement by Rotating Laser The Rotating Laser is first positioned at the centre or near to it. Then, the number of radial stations is selected according to the circumference of the tank. Datum plate elevation is checked by Rotating Laser & with reference to the same, the readings are taken at each radial stations. All the data acquired are compiled & profile of tank is generated. Consequently, the bottom volume is computed.
1.2.3
Deadwood Measurement
The entire deadwood is accurately accounted for as to the volume and location in order to permit adequate allowances for volumes of liquid displaced by various objects and allocation of these effects at various elevations within the tanks.
1.2.4 Development of Capacity Table Development of capacity tables is based on the field data compiled & generated by the software incorporating necessary corrections factors. The calibration tables are presented for the required computation interval. The software allows calculations to be carried out using ISO/IP or API/ASTM with various options of units for presentation.

2.1 ADVANTAGES 1. HARDWARE/ EQUIPMENT Fully Digital with Touch Screen c/w Robotic function features. 2. Output/Data Collection Digital Data, i.e. co-ordinates (tempering free). 3. PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL Higher as 2-3 tanks of 20 Dia tanks can be easily calibrated internally. Tanks having more than 20 diameters can be calibrated internally in a single day. External calibrations of tanks can also done within 1-2 days depending on diameters of tank. 4. Accuracy Higher as digital data is consistent.
5. SAFETY LEVEL AT WORK Cancel out random movements so, no eruption of any eventuality.
