LINER TERMINOLOGY Bottle Neck - The dimension between the inside diameter diameter of the bowl liner and outside diameter of the main main shaft sleeve on a Standard crusher. This dimension can be a restricting area when compared to the feed opening on the open side. Bowl Liner - Secured inside of the bowl to protect it from wear. Feed Opening Closed Side - The dimension representing the maximum feed opening when the mantle is closest to the bowl liner. Feed Opening Open Side – Side – The dimen dimension sion represent representing ing the maxim maximum um feed opening when the mantle is farthest away from the bowl liner. Filler Pieces – Cast stee steell segmen segments ts that are welded to the inside of the bowls on Standard crushers to reduce the quantity of backing when installing a fine or medium bowl liner in a coarse bowl. Head Wear Ring – Ring – A conical rolled steel steel part that is usually usually supplied supplied in segments segments that is welded to the head below the mantle when using short liners in a SHORT HEAD ® crusher. The head head wear ring prevents erosion to the head from the discharge of crushed material in a short crushing chamber. The head wear ring is changed once for two to three mantle changes. Locking Collar – Collar – A thread threaded ed com component ponent which is bolted to the top of the SHORT ® HEAD onto which the locking nut is attached. The threads of the locking collar are left hand. Locking Nut – Nut – A threade threaded d compon component ent that is turned onto the locking collar to exert a clamping force on the mantle. mantle. The threads of the the locking nut are left hand. The locking nut is changed once for two to three mantle changes. Locking Nut Cover – Cover – A component which is threade threaded d into the upper portion of the ® locking nut SHORT HEAD to keep material from damaging the upper portion of the head. The threads of the locking nut cover are left hand. Lower Mantle Mantle – On 5 ½ and 7 foot crushers, the mantles are in two pieces, upper mantle and lower mantle. The two piece configuration reduces the mantle change out cost because most of the wear wear is done to the lower mantle. The upper mantle mantle is changed once for two to three lower mantle changes.

REVISION DATE: 4-14-2009 Main Shaft Nut – The locking mechanism on Standard crushers and 4 foot, 4 ¼ foot and 5 ½ foot SHORT HEAD ® with standard main shafts. The threads in the main main shaft nut are right hand threads. Main Shaft Sleeve – Used on standard crush crushers ers and 4 foot, 4 ¼ foot and 5 ½ foot ® SHORT HEAD with with standard main shafts. The main shaft sleeve protects the portion that extends above the head. The main shaft sleeve is changed once for two to three mantle changes. Mantle – Covers the head of the crusher to protect it from wear. The 4 ¼ foot and smaller crushers have a one piece mantle. The 5 ½ foot and 7 foot crushers have two piece mantles, upper and lower mantle. Minimum Closed Side Setting Setting – Theoretically the tightest that a specific set of liners can be set at. Due to fines in the feed, hardness hardness of the rock, rock, moisture, feed distribut distribution ion and feed segregation it may not be possible to achieve the minimum closed side setting. The minimum operating closed side for any set of liners is when there is no adjustment ring movement, no excessive lube oil drain line temperatures or crusher stalling. Maximum Closed Side – Side – A setting where the bowl is engaged into 1 ½ to 2 threads of the adjustment ring. Nip Angle - The angle that is developed between the surfaces of the bowl liner and mantle when when the mantle is at its closest relationship to the bowl bowl liner. Nip angles should should not exceed 23 degrees for best material flow through a crushing chamber. Thru Bolt – Bolt – A means of retaining the bowl liner in the bowl with a straight bolt through lugs on the bowl liner and into the bowl. "U" Bolt Bolt – The means of retaining the bowl liner in the bowl with a "U" shaped bolt inserted under the hooks of the bowl liner and into the bowl. Upper Mantle – Mantle – On 5 ½ and 7 foot crushers, the mantle is in two pieces, upper mantle and lower mantle. The two piece configuration reduces the mantle change out cost because most of the wear wear is done to the lower mantle. mantle. The upper mantle mantle is changed once for two to three lower mantle changes. Torch Ring – Ring – A sacrificial piece piece that is located located between the main main shaft sleeve and and main shaft nut which is burnt out with a torch to relieve the pressure on the mantle and allow the main shaft nut to be loosened.

METALLURGY MET ALLURGY CHOICES C HOICES There are different alloys that are commonly used for the Symons ®: XT510 – This XT510 – This is an 11% to 14% Hadfield manganese. XT510 replaces the Metso alloy alloy designation 0861-500. XT510 is used as an all-purpose liner in all secondary and fine crushing applications for the Symons crushers. XT710 – This is an 18% ma mangan nganese ese chrome chrome allo alloy y and will typically typically provide provide long longer er life than the XT510 or XT610 manganese manganese alloys. The XT710 replaces replaces the old Metso Metso 0861 512, XT500 and MNK material designations. XT710 is used for abrasive applications in the Symons 7’ crusher. XT720 – This is a 22% manganese chrome alloy that will typically provide longer life XT720 than the XT710 manganese. This material can only be applied in 5 ½ foot crushers and smaller and in applications where there is no tramp iron in the circuit. The XT720 replaces the old Metso MNS material designation. For typical applications refer to the table SYMONS CONE LINER ALLOYS AND APPLICATIONS APPL ICATIONS..

BASIC LINER SELECTION FEED SIZE IS KNOWN To chose a liner combination when the top size of the feed is known, divide the thickness of the largest feed by 0.8 to get the required feed opening on the open side. For example if the you are selecting a liner combination for a 5 ½' Standard crusher and the thickest piece is 8", divide 8" by 0.8 to get the required feed opening on the open side. (8" / 0.8 = 10"). Refer to the 5 ½' Standard cavity tables and select a liner combination that that has a feed opening on the open open side that is close to 10". In this case a 4830 6771 bowl liner and a 5013 6801 upper mantle with a 5013 7001 lower mantle would be selected. selected. Use the shaded liner combinati combinations ons where ever possible as these are the most common. KNOWING THE FEED OPENING There are cases when the customer may want to know what the maximum size feed a given feed opening can accept. To determine the maximum maximum size piece that will fit fit in a given feed opening on the open side, multiply the feed opening by 0.8. For example if the liner combination for a 4 ¼' Standard coarse has a feed opening on the open side of 9 5/8" (9.63") the thickest piece that could be fed to it would be about 7 ¾". Multiply the feed opening o the open side by 0.8, (9.63 (9.63 X 0.8 = 7.7").

INSTALLING HEAD WEAR RINGS The head wear ring prevents erosion to the head from the discharge of crushed material in a short crushing chamber. The head wear ring is changed once for two to three mantle changes. In order for the head wear ring to perform correctly correctly and remain on the head through out its life, it must be installed correctly. Follow the installati installation on as shown shown in the illustration; Installing Head Wear Ring.

FILLER PIECES Are cast steel steel segments segments that are welded welded to the inside inside of the bowls bowls on Standard Standard crushers crushers to reduce the quantity of backing when installing a fine or medium bowl liner in a coarse bowl. By reducing the quantity of backing material to be poured, the chances of shrinkage will be reduced. Shrinkage occurs in large cross section pours because the backing cures from the inside and will pull away from the bowl and bowl liner. If shrinkage does take place, the gaps as a result of the shrinkage should be topped off with additional backing. The following table will show the filler piece part number and quantity for each crusher size and bowl and bowl liner combination.

TAKING WEAR PROFILES In order to properly answer any inquiry, it is important that the following information be included. Use the Wear Profile Analysis Form to record your information. 1. Feed gradation. 2. Type of feed (i.e. granite). granite). 3. Product gradatio gradation. n. 4. Circuit diagram complete complete with screen cloth cloth openings and all crusher settings. 5. Part numbers of current mantle and bowl liner. 6. Crusher power draw. 7. Crusher capacity. To operate continuously with liners having a crushing cavity unsuited to the operation, results in uneconomical wear of the liners, poor crushing efficiency and, in some instances, abuse to the Crusher. To obtain a wear profile of the bowl liner and mantle proceed as follows; 1. Torch Cut Through Mantle or Bowl Bowl Liner 2. Trace Worn Contour on on Cardboard or Heavy Paper Inserted in Cut 3. Original Contour Refer to the illustration; Obtaining Wear Contour.

LINER UTILIZATION - SYMONS
The target amount of liner utilization on a Symons ® Cone Cone is 60% to to 65%. Wearing liners more than that can cause damage to the seats on the bowl and head as a result of the liners flexing because of thin cross sections. To determine the amount of utilization proceed as follows; Weigh the bowl liner and mantle prior to installation, record the weight. After removal removal of the set of liners remove remove backing materia materiall and weigh weigh each piece. piece. Subtract the worn weight from the new weight and divide the difference by the new weight to get the worn percentage. EXAMPLE: 7 Foot SHORT HEAD ® New Weights Bowl Liner 4830 7581 Mantle 5013 9001 Total W eight
7,300 Lbs. 4,850 Lbs. 12,150 Lbs.
Worn Weights Bowl Liner 48307581 Mantle 5013 9001 Total W eight
2,525 Lbs. 1,940 Lbs. 4,465 Lbs.
Liner Utilization Bowl Liner (7,300 – 2,525) / 7,300 = 65.4% Mantle (4,850 – 1,940) / 4,850 = 60.0% Total (12,150 – 4,465) / 12,150 = 63.3% Records should be kept and averaged over three or more sets of liners.

CRUSHER CHAMBER PROFILING Now it is possible to model the shape of the chamber without dismantling the crusher. By using NORDBERG-FOAM KIT it's easy to see how the mantle and bowl wear during the life of the liners. This process can can be used on all cone type crushers. It also helps to solve the problem cases. The spare part number of the Nordberg-Foam Kit is 803582. Instructions: 1.)
Set the plastic sheath into the chamber.
2.)
Move the sheath to the closed side position in the chamber.
3.)
Mix 0.35 kg A-component and 0.5 kg B-component (half tin A&B).
4.)
Pour out mixed A+B components into the sheath.
5.)
After expansion of the foam move down the main shaft and remove the sheath.
6.) Draw worn contour by using the expanded foam sheath or send the filled sheath (or drawing) to Metso
NORDBERG-FOAM KIT contains: - A-component 0.7 kg/tin - B-component 1.0 kg/tin - plastic sheath 2.0 m
