Reading
Risky work Most of us have a favourite television programme from childhood – one that we rushed home from school to watch. Maybe it was a cartoon or soap opera or for many, like me, it was the iconic programme Blue Peter , the longest running children’s television programme in the world. 1) ____ The presenters of Blue Peter have become heroes to generations of viewers and one of the most remarkable of these is Helen Skelton. 2) ____ However, during her time presenting the programme she made an enormous impression on kids and adult viewers alike through the immensely difficult physical tasks she took on to raise money for charity. 3) ____ In 2010 she kayaked down the entire length of the crocodile infested Amazon River in 30 days. She followed this with another very dangerous challenge in 2011 – walking along a 150-metre high wire between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, 66 metres above the ground. And she t opped these challenges with the physically very demanding journey to the South Pole by ski and bicycle, breaking the world record for a cycle ride on snow and becoming the first person to reach the South Pole on a bike. Helen’s courage and determination have made her a role model for many young people today, but she’s the last person to boast about her successes. 4) ____ She advises anyone getting involved in exploits like hers to be confident, not to think too much about the problems ahead and to do their best. One of the most important things according to Helen is to be able to laugh at yourself! Now Helen is moving on and will probably take time out from her risky challenges to spend time with her family, maybe even settle down. 5) ____ However, I have a feeling that it won’t be too long before Helen gets the urge to challenge herself physically and break another couple of world records yet again.
