BALL DISRUPTION Ball awareness is essence of ball disruption. If we are aware of where the football is and the manner in which it is being carried, we will understand the opportunities for ball disruption. We want our tacklers to see more than the bll carrier. carrier. We want to see the football. If we become become more aware of the football we can apply the following axioms for ball disruption:
A.
The QB is the the most most vulnerable vulnerable ball ball carrier carrier when when he is in the pocket pocket or or when he he is running with the football. football. The opportunity to cause the QB to fumble are greater than they are with any other offensive player.
B.
The ball carr carrier ier is vulne vulnerab rable le to losin losing g the foo footbal tballl when:
C.
1.
He carr carries ies the the bal balll awa away y fro from m his his bod body y
2.
He is is bei being ng gang ang tac tack kled led
3.
He is is switc switching hing the ball ball from from what what hand hand to to anoth another er

5.
He does does not not see see the tack tackle lerr comi coming ng
6.
He take takess a dir direc ectt hit hit on on the the foo footba tball ll
Anytime Anytime our opponent opponent practices practices poor ball ball security security we must have enoug enough h ball awareness to see this for what it is; an opportunity to gain possession of the football.
STRIPPING THE FOOTBALL 1.
If the the ball is being carried carried in a secure secure manner, manner, we want to put our hat hat through through the ball and wrap with both hands.
2.
If the the ball ball is being carried carried in a loose, loose, away away from from the body manner, manner, we want the the tackler to hat up the ball carrier and punch the football with the wrap-up hand to the side of the ball.
3.
If the the ball carrier carrier is running running near the the sideline sideline and and the ball ball is in the inside hand, want the hat to go through the ball.
4.
If tackli tackling ng a ball carrier carrier from from behind, behind, we want to insure insure the tackle tackle by grabbing grabbing the shoulder pads at the back of the neck while either clubbing down on the ball if it is being held loosely, loosely, or punching the ball out by reaching between the elbow and the body of the runner.
5.
When we are are involve involved d in the pass rush we have have a great great opport opportunity unity to club club the the ball away from the QB by reaching reaching our outside arm. Understand, the ball will either be in the QB¶s QB¶s chest before he starts his delivery or near his throwing shoulder as he starts his throwing motion.
6.
When the ball ball carrie carrierr has been been hit, hit, by by appearanc appearancee controll controlled ed by the tackler tackler,, we want the next man involved to t o tackle the ball an d take it away. away.
7.
There There are are instanc instances es when when a defende defenderr who is is engage engaged d by a block blocker er has no no recourse but to lunge and arm tackle the ball carrier. carrier. When faced with this situation, grab for the ball if it is in the near arm of t he ball carrier.

ONE ONE PLAY LAY AT A TIME TIME There are 5 phases to every football play, play, each is of vital importance to the next. You cannot have a successful play unless you execute each phase properly. properly.
1.
Call: Call: Get Get and and unde unders rsta tand nd each each phase phase of the call call and and unde unders rsta tand nd what what it means to you.
2.
Recog Recogniti nition on of Forma Formatio tion: n: We must must recog recogniz nizee each each offen offensiv sivee for format mation ion and communicate it to each other. We must know it¶s strength, weaknesses, and tendencies and how each of these affect the call.
3.
Alig Alignm nmen ent: t: We must must take take the exac exactt alig alignm nmen entt requ requir ired ed by the call call and and dictated by the offensive offensive formation. Always align in the best position for for you to execute your responsibility. responsibility. 80% of all errors errors come as a result of poor alignment.
4.
Key Key: Your our key key is is a tool tool to to giv givee you you eve every ry adv advan anta tage ge ove overr what what the the offe offense nse can do to you. It will never lie.
5.
Exec Execut utio ion: n: If we hav havee take taken n care care of of the the pre previ viou ouss 4 phase phases, s, then then exe execu cutio tion n becomes the key to playing playing great defense. We are going to execute with intelligence, desire, and enthusiasm.
There are a handful of plays (4 or 5) that will determine the outcome of the game. We need to make the majority of these plays to WIN. Many of these plays occur in the 4th quarter. We must be dominant in the 4th quarter to be a great defensive team.
DOWN AND DISTANCE DISTANCE THEORY As a Defensive Unit, we must at all times know the down and distance situation. Our opponents will, in most instances, classify themselves according to down and distance as to the formations they will use, and the type of play (pass) or (run-inside or outside) we should be expecting. With this in mind, you should memorize the following down an d distance chart to better help you understand und erstand how we try to set our Defenses up and prepare yourself yourself for the situations that will present themselves. 1st & 10 2nd & 1-2 (Waste Down) 2nd & 3-6 (Normal) 2nd & 7 or more (Long) 3rd & 1-2 (Short) 3rd & 3-5 (Medium) 3rd & 6 or more (Long) A.
1st & 10 We must expect in this instance either pass or run and use one of our combination defenses which gives us an excellent running defense plus a strong passing defense. At times, due to calculated frequencies through our scouting system, we may concentrate more emphasis on one phase of their attack rather than the other in this particular down and distance. Good time to offset or use sound stunt and cause blocking problems.
B.
2nd & 1-2 - Waste Do Down Many teams have a tendency tenden cy to go for a home run play pl ay on 2nd & 1-2.
C.
2nd & 3-6 yds (M (Medium) In this situation percentages tend to show that most teams will favor their running attacks, although this does not eliminate the possibility of the pass. Due to such a percentage, we would tend to select select one of our running defenses that is designed to impair our opponents¶ running running game, but still gives us ample pass coverage.
D.
2nd & 7 or more (L (Long) This situation is predicated by success or failure on 1 st down. If the offense ran the ball and got stopped, greater greater chance of pass. If the offense offense passed the ball and it was incomplete incomplete greater chance of run. run. Know what happened on 1 st down!
E.
3rd & 1-2 (Short) We must expect our opponents to select their best offensive play in this situation. We will definitely concentrate on stopping their best play with our best running defense. Our theory is to meet strength strength with strength in this situation. We must stop their offense for no gain or a loss in this situation.
F.
3rd & 3-6 (Medium) We regard this situation in theory the same as 2nd 2n d & Normal, but whatever the offense selects to run against u s, we must hold them to less than 6 yards to force them into a kicking situation.
G.
3rd & 6 or more (L (Long) In this situation we find through percentages that most of our opponents tend to rely upon their passing game more frequently than their running game. With this in mind we will select one of our defenses that is designed to give give us maximum pass coverage. coverage. In other instances, we must select one of our blitzing defenses to p ut pressure on the opposing quarterbacks, thus disturbing the timing of their passing attack.
