2016-2017 Annual R epor t
Success, like life, is a journey, not a desnaon. It depends on the i ntegraon and cooperaon of diverse stakeholders; in the case of Arts for Le arning that includes educators, parents, arsts, other arts and nonprot professionals, community partners, our Board and StART Board members, and, most importantly, importantly, the students that we serve. You, our donors and funders, also help to shepherd us along this path. You provide essenal support that not only sustains our most eecve, proven programs but also the innovave communitybased projects we have recently undertaken that inspire students to learn, create, and connect. Our journey this year has centered on deepening our impact by providing mulple opportunies for students to interact with our highly skilled teaching arsts. These residencies vary in length, from one week to one year, year, but oer the richest potenal for creave learning by giving students me to process unfamiliar ideas, construct new understandings, and apply the concepts they have learned. This approach is exemplied by our Fresh StART program, highlighted here in the annual report, which engages students in the creaon of public art. The content of each Fresh StART residency is authenc—it is student driven, problem based, and developed in collaboraon with local partners. When we can help students have a lasng and posive impact in their community, we count that as success.

“Arts “Arts for Learning has blown Ben Franklin Elementary’s mind! My students ask me on a regular basis when the next vising arst is coming to see us. We have been very fortunate to have many arst visits; each one le us mesmerized. Last year, we had the pleasure of hearing the most beauful harp music [played by teaching arst Melissa Gallant] throughout our halls on the last day before Christmas Break. Parents and students soened their hearts and you could hear kindness throughout the school. I bet people around the school could see the glow we had! Adzooks Puppets not only taught my students how to recycle things around the house to form puppets, but also inspired them to get up, move, and be creave. [Teaching [Teaching arsts Robin Holm and David Wright] thrilled my students into thinking and problem solving that will change them for the beer every day. [Teaching [Teaching arst] Robin McBride v isited us on an ordinary day, but when she le our school the way I looked at clay changed. I learned from her more in one day than I did in my [college] clay classes over a semester. semester. When you have a moment to become the le arner, arner, when you have been the teacher, those moments are priceless. Arts for Learning gave me that moment and I want to thank you. Thank you for making our schools beer! Thank you for expanding our minds and creave thinking! Thank you for allowing me to be part of something bigger!!! Arts for Learning has opened a bigger door for my students and me: We are no longer the hungry arsts that we started as, but now are highly movated, creave creatures that want more! More visits! More learning! More extraordinary arsts to come knocking at our doors!!! Arts for Learning is a wonderful, resourceful, worth-every-minute learning experience!
Every year, Arts for Learning selects an Indiana educator to honor as an Arts Champion for his/her advocacy of the arts and advancementt of creative learning opportunities in the classroom. advancemen
