Engine oil pressure, fault tracing After
• basic data gathering • reading off fault codes • parameter checks have been completed, use the results from the tests (as recommended in the symptom information) to understand the vital functions of the engine. Weigh the results of all the information together to create a good basis for the continued fault-tracing work in this checklist. As a fault can affect several systems, it is important to carry out the specified VCADS Pro tests to allow fault causes to be excluded or confirmed at an early stage.
Note: Because the illustrations in the service literature are used for different engine versions there may be differences in the components. The essential information in the illustrations is always correct. Vehicle: _______________ Chassis number: _______________

Comments for Oil pressure engine, fault-tracing Oil level, check 1 Check that the oil level lies within the tolerances. If the oil level is below or close to the min line on the dipstick, it can affect the oil pressure during very arduous driving or when driving in very hilly terrain.
2 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.
Oil quality, check 1 Check that the oil quality meets Volvo specification. 2 Check if the oil is contaminated with coolant, fuel or soot. If the oil is contaminated with coolant, the oil pressure may deteriorate due to clogged oil filters and oil valves. Contaminated oil can also cause damage to the oil pump with engine breakdown as a consequence. Possible causes of faults:
•
Inner leakage in the oil cooler. Check oil contamination in the coolant.
• •
Leakage in the cylinder head gasket.
•
Cracks in the cylinder head, cylinder liner or cylinder block.
Leakage at the O-rings between the cylinder liner and cylinder block.
If there is fuel in the engine oil, see “Fuel in engine oil, fault tracing” (Check list C), Diagnosis Group 2330.
3 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.
22106-3 Oil filter, check 1 Check that the oil filter is not damaged or clogged. If the filter is damaged, the oil flow through it may be restricted. This can lower the oil pressure.
2 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.

Oil filter drain valve, check 1 Remove the oil filter. 2 Check that the valve located at the bottom is not damaged so that its function is impaired. Press in the valve cone with a blunt object and check that it does not bind and that it seals against the seat. Note. When the filter is installed the valve is always closed. If it has been damaged, oil can leak through it and lower the oil pressure.

3 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.
Oil pressure gauge, check 1 Connect the PC tool to the bus diagnostic connector. Start the VCADS Pro test “28407–3 Sensor values, check” and check the values for engine oil pressure. Follow the instructions in VCADS Pro. 2 Compare the value with the displayed value in the oil pressure gauge in the instrument. If the values do not match, perform the VCADS Pro test “38117-3 Instrument panel, test” and check the oil pressure gauge.
3 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.
22104-3 Oil pressure sensor, check If you suspect that the oil pressure sensor gives an incorrect value, check the oil pressure using an external pressure sensor.

4 Start the engine. Check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure measurement shows that the pressure is below the minimum value according to the specification, continue the fault tracing by checking the oil filters. If oil pressure measurement using an external pressure sensor shows that the pressure is within the tolerances, but the normal pressure sensor in the engine does not, replace the pressure sensor.
5 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.

2 Check that the valve is not damaged so that its function is impaired. Check that it does not bind and that it seals against its seat. 3 If the fault is not found, continue fault tracing with the next step in the checklist, see “Engine oil pressure, fault tracing” page 2.
Overflow valve for lubricating system, check 1 Remove the oil filter housing. 2 Remove the overflow valve, refer to “22335–2 Oil cooler overflow valve, change”, in repair Group 2229. Check that the valve piston and spring are not damaged so that their function is impaired. Check that the valve cone does not bind and that it seals against its seat.
