INTRODUCTION Whenever somebody finds out I enjoy origami, they always want to know how I started. Well, it’s a long story… After spilling water on a “Draw your own cartoons” book, my father had to replace it. He couldn’t find another such book and thought “Paper Toys” by Toshie Takahama would be a good substitute. I wouldn’t know the difference, I mean, I was only about ten years old! This was in 1987. Knowing better than to argue or complain, I thought I’d try some of the paper folding. I was soon hooked and my dad bought me Robert Harbin’s “Teach Yourself Origami”, of which I shortly had several models memorized. Then I got Eric Kenneway’s “Origami from A to Z”. I never met anybody else interested in origami and even my friends didn’t catch onto it. I tried my best. So my origami was all self-taught. There were no more books to buy in the bookshops, and folding the same models over and over got a bit boring. A few years later my brother’s visiting friend saw me attempting a model, and taught me how to fold a wonderful Husky Dog. His parents had bought Robert Harbin’s “Secrets of Origami: The Japanese Art of Paperfolding” in Germany a few years before. I had to have it, but it was not purchasable in South Africa (even though Robert Harbin was born in South Africa!) So I did what the wrong thing is to do and copied the book from my brother’s friend. During my high school career, origami didn’t exist in my life. There was sport, girls and of course trying to achieve the right grades to go to University. After school I joined the South African National Defense Force. Still no origami. In 1996, internet reached our home and my brother wanted to buy me a book from Amazon. com for my birthday. He thought he was cool, because he was
the only computer literate family member. Anyway, I was not big on reading and didn’t have any idea of a book to order. Eventually I decided to replace my copy of Harbin’s book with the real thing. So my brother ordered “Secrets of Origami: The Japanese Art of Paperfolding” for me. And I guess that’s where it all began, with the internet. After seeing a photo of John Montroll’s Skunk on the net, I thought it to be impossible. After all, I was still used to the 1970’s designs in Harbin’s books. As it was so easy to order books over the internet, I decided to check out Montroll’s “Origami Inside-Out”. And it was true. One uncut square to fold the Skunk! Unbelievable! My Origami book collection grew quickly, and instead of studying Physiotherapy subjects, I was spending a lot of time folding as many origami models as possible. Soon thereafter I had folded all the complex models from Lang’s “Origami Insects and their Kin.” But designing your own models is different. Not easy at all! Try and try again (it sounds like something a teacher would say!) My first original design was a Christmas Tree in 1998. Now I hardly spend any time folding other creators’ models. I try to design as many new and original models as possible. I hope you enjoy them!

Pig,
Although it looks like an easy fold, some practice will be required to fold a good rendition. There is an easier way to fold the face (by making an Open Sink on the crease made in step 45), but the way it is diagrammed gives a better result – no open layers and easier to round the head when shaping at the end. The diagrams were done for the enjoyment of all who want to fold it. Please use for personal use only. Also note that the diagrams are unedited, so SPARE me if there are any mistakes I have overlooked. Please enjoy.

This Pig design came from an earlier Sheep design which had a lot of excess paper in the head area. It looked quite easy to convert the Sheep into a pig, especially the fact that the Sheep had a nice round body shape. Inspired by Ronald Koh’s Pig (expertly folded by Boon), and some inspiration from Joseph Wu, Roman Diaz and TienYin Yau (one late night folding at TienYin’s place), the design easily fell into place. It wasn’t meant to be a “quality” design, but due to the interest on my flickr page, I decided to diagram it anyway.

The design came relatively easy. The difficult part was to diagram the collapsing sequence of the base in a logical manner.

Steps 14 to 20 show how to divide into thirds. Do not be scared off by the closed unsink in steps 40 to 41, they are easier than they look. The Common Raven can be posed in different positions, but I like the “pecking” position, as it seems that the ravens are always pecking (or stealing!) something off the ground.

I decided on book-symmetry for the strip grafts that would form the claws. This ensures minimal layers to form the claws and nails, so it is not dependent on special thin paper for a good result. Even 80-100gsm paper will work for this model.

Bulldog, by Quentin Trollip c
After snorkelling with the manatees in Florida, I wanted to design one. The face resembled a bulldog more, and so I set off on designing the Bulldog instead. I used a common base, which uses most of the paper for the head and front legs of the model. Very little paper is used for the hind quarters. The big chest gives the Bulldog a more masculine effect.

As there are many unnecessary creases in the folding sequence, you may want to try to fold it from CP. The model (are of the chest) does not lie flat, hence the CP not being flat-foldable.

Jesus, by Quentin Trollip c
I challenged myself to design a mask/face of a famous person, which is a difficult task! Using colour-changes could help to achieve a sense of recognition. I based this design on pictures of Jesus in a children’s book, with the beard and long straight hair. As the idea behind the design was to recognise a specific individual on facial features, I didn’t think it was necessary to add detail to the rest of the body. I did use the excess paper to represent somewhat of an idea of shoulders, making this a design of a bust more so than just a mask. Use beige and light-brown paper, foil or wet-folded.

Spaceman, by Quentin Trollip c
This is a very simple design of a Spaceman mask. I should rather say that it is a design of a mask that I think would resemble a Spaceman – I don’t know where I got the image from though. I also tried to diagram it in a simple way as possible. The usage of the corners of the square for the colour-changes can be used or adapted to try on other types of faces/masks also. I have found thick foil to work best for this design (silver and purple if possible), because the folded edges can be made as flat as possible. The folding of the eyes are to be done at the folder’s own discretion.

South Africa / Canada This design was obviously inspired by the one designed by Jeremy Shafer. I had seen Jeremy’s “Swiss Army Knife” on an internet photo and then tried designing my own. It is a very old design and quite simple to fold.

Crease Pattern:

Thin, foil paper gives a good result (but changing the orientation of creases in step 8 can be challenging with foil). I have also had a good result with foil on glassine paper.

Panda Bear I enjoy colour-changed origami models. The contrast between black and white – the opposite ends of the spectrum – are especially appealing to me. Apart from its cuteness, I also think the colour contrast is what makes the panda bear so popular in origami. Six points from the side of the square are needed for the pairs of black ears, arms and legs. My goal was to design a cute Panda, of which the proportions were not of high priority.

Although there is an interesting stretch fold in step 28, and some closed sinks in step 35, it is quite an easy model to fold. Step 45 is quite unorthodox, so I recommend to first practicefold the model to understand what is to be done there. The simplicity, large head and large ears should add to the cuteness of the Panda Bear. You can fold a smaller one to sit between its mother’s legs, as depicted in most origami pandas. You can also play with the shape of the eyes to give them different expressions! Can you figure out how to give the Panda a little smile?
