Research Title : Investigating Investigating the antimicrobial antimicrobial activity of Donax canniformis (Bamban plant) leaves ethanolic extract against selected Gram positive and Gram Negative bacterial strains Background : D. canniformis falls under the Marantaceae family. It is a perennial, stout, tufted rhizomatous, erect and
shrub-like herb. It is 2-5 m tall, with true, slender and sympodially branching stems. In the Philippines a decoction of the roots is considered an antidote against snake bites and blood poisoning, the juice from crushed roots is used against fungal infections and an infusion of young shoots is taken to lower fever. There are confirmed studies of it’s antioxidant activity of the extracts of leaves, fruits, stems & roots
The group will searching for an available Donax canniformis (Bamban plant) in some plant nurseries near here in Manila, because some articles say that this plant is an exotic plant. After finding the plant, it will undergo Authentication in the National Museum and weeks after waiting, it c an already undergo drying and grinding. Most of the time, the grinded should weigh 100g so there will be enough plant extract to be collected. Next, the group g roup will set up a percolator and put an ethanol solution inside. After the collection of plant extract, the group will find bacterial strains appropriate for the study and to look for a place where it is available. Lastly the group will do I disc diffusion technique to confirm it’s antimicrobial
activity, there will be a standard disc which contains standard antibiotics (amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin) to be used as positive control.
